THE ART OF SABİRE SUSUZ

Mustafa Durak

Autoportrait

The voices of different ones are always crying out. To be different and against is an artistic innate feature. This is her/his djinn that implies this sentence: genius and demon at the same time. The djinn who abstracts the artist. The djinn who leaves her/him lonely and separate. But this is the same djinn who teaches to create and fills the artistic spirit with the deitic energies and with the energies of futur.

Sabire susuz is a turkish serigraphic artist and serigraphy theacher in a fine art school at the University. It can be said that she is a megalo-feminist artist. Then for me at least, each artist has to have of megalomany. Without it, (s)he can not be artist. The megalomany is the necessary djinn. And Sabire Susuz allways

works with her self portraits. Herself is an un exhaustive spring, an unlimited horizon for her. She is also actionist artist. Saying this I imagine the history of behavioral and actional art, and I see that its origine begins with romantic movement, in fact with 1789 revolution and, if we go deeper, with murderers of prophets, kings. We can not abstract the human life from the artistic life. Her being is transformed to an area of show. She unifies two lives of her. Her body becomes her canvas, a part of her art and the source of her art.

Embraced

Firstly she gives birth to her inside twin concretly in her art. She makes her, similar and seperate another one. She multiplies in her and from her. Our albums are proofs. They point out our masks used, the different forms of our bodies in different times, and our different moods. This multiplication of “me” approachs her works to Andy Warhol’s. Each work of her runs over the canvas. She can not fit into her limits. She is excessive, transcendental. She makes herself pregnant. Therefore each project of her is a happy hurry, a sacred rituel full of necessary distress. She is focal

subject of her Works. It is birth and marriage. It is a process of religious feast and a big enthousiasm. It is sacrifice and reincarnation.

Playing cards

She is multiple of her and unique in her. She postpones all figures of playing cards and instead of them, she puts herself on. She will be arranged in players’ memories. A deal can not be played without her. She becomes unique queen or goddess of all men, all gamblers, all ones who can run the risk. She wants to be only one for all men. She atracts all of them to her own game. She wants to be a dream and a fallacy like the life itself.

Someone will betray me

At the another work (“Someone will betray me”), she refers to Christ’s Last Diner. At this work, she is Christ and his apostles. She wants Christ. She wants friends of Christ. She wants to be Yehuda. She becomes Mary Magdelana. She becomes a seducing one with flighty and dandy and magic regards, she becomes demon. She becomes female Christ who can not bear with a male Christ. She becomes other face of Christ. She indicates the sexuality in sacredness. She becomes herself and her mannequin who dramatize her. She is the gamble and gambler. She is Christ who salves and Yehuda who betrays. She wants to be sacred and worm of impiety. She wants to be christhianism, she wants to be religion, she wants to be universe.

Marriage

At the one of her recent Works she got married with herself. Of course she did not forget to invite her friends, her relatives and the members of media to her marriage party. They were surprised when they saw the bride and the gender in/on unique body. She was bride and gender. And after that she had a child, of course, the child was herself again

Autoportrait with marks of clothes 2005, 100 X 80 cm

At her last work, she called us to be witness of another interesting work. She created a new Sabire Susuz made of marks of clothes. She had collected all of them from her friends and her relatives. It was the example of collage. It was similar to a kilim, to a carpet, to a hand made blanket. She was an art producer who knows to valorize all of of the materials. She was an object and she was

made of objects. In fact, at first if you look closely it is difficult to say what it is, but if you look at it with riht angle and with right distance, you may see Sabire Susuz portrait. So we can have a perception of being hidden and evident about it/her. But it was not all that she explains with her work. She unifies all substances of life that her friends and relatives had. She burries herself under the pieces of their beings. But at the same time, she collects, capts their talisman of life. She becomes herself and valuable others for her. She exists herself with them. For me this work is a new phase for her art. At this work Sabire Susuz uses her psychological problemes and sociological ones together. She critisize someones who hide themselves behind the Marks. Finally she betrays her and the others. Speaking about the creating phase of her works, at the artistic transformation point her desires, her projects make her sleepless. She is a young girl who prepare herself to marriage. She wants to imagine all details of it. All details must have ‘sabire susuz art mark’. And each phase of it must be lived in a ecstasy, in a emotive pleasure. At the beginning she spreads the emotion to the others. She makes the others her collaborates in her work. So she has her first believers. As a goddess, she finds her servants. She makes her creative phase a religious feast and a rituel. And they create for each time in a different forms an icona of the same goddess: Sabire Susuz. Each exhibition is an invitation to be witness of the demoniac creativity of her. A call to adoration to herself. For her works, others can say: “again this obsessive and iterative subject of her”, But I hypotesize that each artist must have an obsessive subject in which (s)he could to set sails to the open seas. Artist must questioned himself/herself in it, and must find him/her in it.
