    HERITAGE campaigners fear

cabling for a new windfarm could

    wreck an important archaeologicalsite.

The cross dyke at Tottington Mount, near Upper Beeding, dates back as faras 2000BC.

Energy giant E.ON wants to digunder the Bronze Age monument forcabling to connect the proposed off-shore Rampion windfarm to theNational Grid.

The cable will go through the SouthDownsNational Park toconnect the195turbines off the Sussex coast betweenBrighton and Newhaven to an electric-ity connection at Bolney.

E.ON said the cable could not avoid

the monument due to steep slopes oneither side of the site. But conservationists are demanding

    thecablebe reroutedawayfromthepro-tected monument altogether.

Steve Ankers, a planning officer for

the South Downs Society, said: If thecable wassituated further east it wouldavoid the national park altogether.

The cross dyke is one of the mostsensitive parts of the route and theplans do not recognise the archaeologi-cal importance of the whole nationalpark area.

Chris Todd, from Brighton and HoveFriendsof theEarth, said he wasscep-tical of the need for the cable route togo through the ancient monument.

He said: E.ON needs to appreciatetheneedto valueheritage andprotect it

where possible. It seems odd that it requires an 8.7-

mile cable route through the nationalpark at a point where it is only two tothree miles wide.

Mr Todd said a 12-week public con-

sultation, whichconcludedlast Sunday, was unsatisfactory as no Environ-mental Impact Assessment was pub-lished.

E.ONis nowin discussions withEng-lish Heritage over the TottingtonMountsite.

Thesite is a Scheduled Ancient Mon-ument which requires a recommenda-tion by the conservation body to thegovernment before work can be carriedout.

English Heritage experts believe thesite contains buried archaeologicalremains.

A spokesman said: Very few havesurvived to the present day and henceall well-preserved examples are consid-ered to be of national importance.

    Victoria Blake, from E.ON, said:

Weare doing everything we can to ensurethe cable crosses in an acceptable wayand has minimum impact on the area.

The disturbance should be as littleas possible.
