Laminating The Future

The Portakabin Group Achieves UK Construction Industry First With New University Technical College Contract

The Portakabin Group has been awarded the £14 million design and build contract for the UK’s first university technical college (UTC) to be built off site. Opening in September 2016, the Global Academy will provide academic and vocational training for 14-19 year olds who want to work in the broadcast and digital media industries.

Designed by the Portakabin Group and architects Surface to Air, the building has a forward-thinking, innovative design to reflect the creative ethos of the new Global Academy.

Advanced off-site technology using a Yorkon building solution from the Portakabin Group will seamlessly integrate both modular and site-based construction. A significant proportion of the work will be completed off site at the Portakabin Group factory in York in order to meet the challenging programme for completion in time for the start of the 2016-17 academic year.

The technically-complex building is also designed to deliver a demanding acoustic specification for the broadcast studios, with triple glazing and specially-engineered air conditioning.

Commenting on the project, Simon Ambler, Director of the Portakabin Group said, “We are delighted to have been awarded the contract for the UK’s first UTC to be built off site. This is part of a really exciting regeneration scheme, which will create a landmark education facility to give young people fantastic, practical training for the broadcast and digital media industries.”

“This is a hugely significant project for the construction sector. It demonstrates the architectural flexibility of a highly engineered Yorkon off-site solution from the Portakabin Group and how an outstanding

building design can successfully integrate different construction methods. It also illustrates really well how we can deliver an inspiring, animated and intelligent building in a very short timescale and on a highly complex site.”

The Global Academy will house a sports hall, theatres and a cinema, which will be linked to a four-storey modular building by a dynamic, full-height central atrium space. There will be extensive facilities for TV and radio broadcasting, including radio studios, TV studios, flexible teaching spaces, informal learning zones to facilitate interaction, a café and dining area.

The scheme is being constructed by the Portakabin Group on the heritage brownfield site of the Old Vinyl Factory in Hayes in the London Borough of Hillingdon. The site will also require the Portakabin Group to carry out complex groundworks, extensive excavations for district heating, and the construction of a new sub-station.

University technical colleges are technical secondary schools for 14 to 19 year olds, teaching the inventors, engineers, scientists and technicians of tomorrow. They offer a broad curriculum that combines an academic education with technical and practical learning. UTCs use the latest equipment and technology to provide an environment where students can thrive and develop the skills employers need. The governing body of each UTC is controlled by a business sponsor and a university.

Mapei Announces Its 2016 Ceramic, Resilient And EWI Training Course Dates Mapei is pleased to announce its 2016 ceramic, resilient and EWI training course dates, which are available to view on their website. All courses are free of charge and will be held in the newly refurbished Mapei Training Centre facility in Halesowen, West Midlands.

The training courses take place between 9am and 4pm with complimentary buffet lunch and refreshments provided. Each particular course is designed to incorporate both theory and practical sessions and is delivered by Mapei Training Managers. At the end of each course all attendees will receive a Mapei certificate of attendance combined with a Mapei goody bag.

All courses are aimed at installers, distributors, contractors, specifiers and designers. British Standard requirements will be explained within each field for those specialists attending certain courses. Each course will include an introduction to the Mapei group, a Factory Tour and a full explanation of the

product ranges, coupled with practical demonstrations across a variety of topics, tailored to fit the training session.

In addition to the general dates, Mapei will offer product knowledge training and assessment towards the TTA Tile Retail Apprenticeship Scheme. Mapei has also taken on students from NSPP Vocational Training to help further expand youngsters educational experience as well as inspire students to reach their potential within the EWI industry.

Trainees are able to develop core competencies by gaining more practical experience of the products and application techniques. Mapei will also provide bespoke courses for individual companies based on specific requirements involving the use of Mapei products.

Mapei are committed to helping trainees continue to build their knowledge of preparation and their use of new and existing products through to the application process. Trespa Expands Specification Team

Trespa has appointed Gavin Ross and Jason Gilbard as Facade Advisors, expanding its Specification Sales Team in the UK and Eire. Gavin joins Trespa from PPG Industries where he was involved in setting up EWI Render Systems, a new division for the company, responsible for technical specifications and contractor training as well as developing new routes to market. Fire Protection, Structural Strength And Adaptability

Structural fire safety is achieved either by what is called ‘passive protection’ for example fire resistant lining boards and/or ‘active protection’ through the use of smoke ventilation, alarm systems and sprinklers. For the structural engineer, the material choice within the structural solution will influence the passive and active fire protection strategy.

Recyfix® Monotec - A New Monolithic Drainage System With A High Attenuation VolumeHauraton Limited have introduced into the UK, RECYFIX® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel system for the surface drainage of pavements, bicycle routes, car/van parks and roadways in and around residential, commercial and light industrial areas where the channels need to have high lateral strength, are capable of withstanding continuous compressive loads and where ease of installation is a major consideration.

The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight,

including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained.

MONOTEC channels are offered in two nominal grating widths of 100 and 200mm, both suitable for a loading category of up to Class D400. The 100mm channels are available in three overall heights; 230, 280 and 380mm and provide channel cross-sections of 190.5cm2, 245.5 cm2, and 355.5cm2 respectively. The largest 200mm channel, which only weighs 16.2kg, has a cross-section of 746.1cm2 and so has an attenuation volume in excess of 74 litres per meter.

The three sizes of 100mm channels can be arranged in a step-fall arrangement with different channel heights connected by special transition adaptors that ensure the water drains away smoothly and quietly with the increased flow velocity playing a considerable role in cleaning the channel

run. The step-fall arrangement may be desirable where there is a high risk of silting as the increased flow will help wash debris towards the system’s Inspection/Trash Box.

Ingenious grating design…In 2010 Hauraton introduced FIBRETEC®, a new design of moulded slot grating on their RECYFIX® PRO range of channels. This heelsafe grating has super smooth, elliptical slot openings where the moulded bars have slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges.

As well as providing an elegant appearance, this feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots helping eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. A grating with the same design has now been incorporated in the RECYFIX® MONOTEC which helps optimise its attenuation volume. The introduction of RECYFIX® MONOTEC means in any project, there are now three different types of channel in the Haruaton range that can be specified with the same grating design.

Tim Connolly, Hauraton’s Director of Sales and Marketing explains a major benefit of the new channels, “Specifying RECYFIX® MONOTEC allows hydraulic engineers and contractor’s wide flexibility during the design and installation stages by reducing the number of channel runs normally required to drain a large area. The reduction means less materials being used and fewer underground excavations, all resulting in an easy and fast installation procedure”.

Carbon Monoxide – And How A Window Could Help Save Your LifeIt is the most common cause of poisoning death. You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. You can’t taste it. Yet it kills hundreds of people each year around the world. Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a deadly risk to health. It is also impossible detect without the right equipment. No doubt you have heard news stories of people dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. You are probably aware that it has a lot to do with badly-maintained gas appliances.

Why is it so dangerous – and how can windows make a difference?In this short article we take a look at some important facts about carbon monoxide, before talking about some Roto products that can be used to form part of a safeguarding policy.

What exactly is carbon monoxide?Although it can occur naturally, in this context carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Fuels such as gas, oil or wood all contain carbon. Normally, when they are burned with a sufficient supply of oxygen, the carbon oxidises and becomes carbon dioxide (C02). However, if there is insufficient oxygen, it is possible for the oxidation process to be incomplete and the result is carbon monoxide (CO).

Why is it so dangerous?Carbon monoxide is highly poisonous to humans. When inhaled, it is absorbed into the blood much more readily than oxygen. From there, it bonds itself to the haemoglobin in the bloodstream. This has the effect of reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Carbon monoxide victims die of hypoxia: oxygen starvation. Exposure to less than fatal levels of CO can also cause permanent neurological damage.

Important things to checkThere are a few basic checks you can make in the home from time to time to make sure there is no obvious cause of carbon monoxide or lack of ventilation: Look for sooting or discolouration and and around gas appliances, including boilers and water heaters; Pilot lights and gas flames should burn blue. If yellow or orange, this is a sign of incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide may be being produced; Make sure flues and chimneys are clear and don’t contain leaks; Check that air vents in walls are not blocked.

Where do Roto products come into this?It is highly recommended that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. There are many battery and mains-products devices on the market. Many are stand-alone devices that emit an alarm signal when CO is detected. However, it is also possible to have a detector wired into a ‘smart’ home automation system. Roto’s electromechanical drive systems enable windows to be opened, closed and locked remotely. The drive units can be connected to a ‘smart’ system so that windows open or close in response to conditions, for example humidity, rain – or carbon monoxide.

CW 50-HI Now Offers Better Thermal Insulation Than Ever

Reynaers has launched its improved aluminium Concept Wall 50-HI (High Insulation) system, which offers better thermal insulation properties than ever before. This new variant of CW 50 benefits from improved insulation profiles, which can achieve an impressive insulation value (Uf) down to 0.56 W/m2K with a glass thickness of 60 mm. Open Up Shopping Spaces With Sliding And Stacking Walls From D R Services

Within covered shopping arcades, the specification of moveable glazed walls for shop fronts is a highly practical solution. They open up the retail space so that there is no obvious boundary between inside and outside, while also maximising floor space and removing dead areas. There is a wide choice of styles, shapes and colours available as well as automatic systems to cope with installations where manual handling is not an option. For architects and designers, there are no hindrances at all regarding style – the only major constraint that might be faced with moveable walls is whether or not they will physically fit within the confines of the building. With stacking doors, the size of doors specified is obviously limited by the amount of stacking space available in the parking bays. In a sliding stacking wall, each individual panel slides on its own. The user unlocks it from the floor and slides it towards the parking bay as a single unit, repeating the process until each panel is in the desired location. With a folding system, meanwhile, each panel is connected to the next by a pair of hinges. The bolt is lifted at the hinge point between the two panels, which enables two panels to fold flat against each other. When more than

two panels are utilised, the folding process resembles a concertina. Folding systems are more costly than stacking doors, since they are more complicated to manufacture. However, the advantage of a folding system is that a parking bay isn’t consumed, because all the supporting mechanism is in the wall itself. Hanging wall systems require just a socket in the floor to take the bolt remembering that effective drainage is a must when considering exterior walls. As far as manual handling is concerned, it is easier to operate a sliding stacking system as only one panel is being moved at a time. A sliding folding system requires moving between two to 10 panels. The development of a system approach rationalises and safeguards supply chains and work schedules, which can be more effectively planned for associated and follow-on trades.

This can influence procurement practices, tendering and pricing for individual project contracts or longer term agreements. Architects are either creative people, or people who simply think they’re creative. Either way, their ideas shape our towns and cities, creating cityscapes that are inspiring, wacky – or, in some very few cases, iconic. Modern architecture is shaped by designers interpreting the past to build reflections of corporate or civic modernity. In bad hands, their interpretations of past and future create buildings without design continuum or contemporary relevance. But within that philosophy of architecture as a mirror to the future is a new dynamic because, within the global vortex of creativity, there does seem to be one not-so-subtle difference of approach between east and west. Maybe, and it’s only a maybe, it could be about how we see modernity and what we believe the future should look like. A reflection, perhaps, of both individual and collective psychology.

Shakespeare or Wren, looking down at modern London, would still recognise the medieval street layouts, sometimes with their original buildings. The structures that have grown up around them mainly stand within that continuum. For some reason, by and large, we value the best of the past. In the east, it’s been a different story. When modern prosperity came to Asia, it came with mind-blowing intensity and an overwhelming urge to rip up the old and rebuild from scratch. Across the Middle East and Asia, old towns and cities were simply bulldozed. Think of Dubai.

In the rush to rebuild, against a background of enormous economic growth, there is only one kind of building that can arrogantly shout out status – a shorthand and visible symbol of everything that the modern world can offer. The supertall skyscraper. A whole raft of supertall buildings are due for completion this year, including a 599-metre tower in Shenzhen that will take the mantle of the world’s tallest office building from the One World Trade Centre in New York; the 597-metre Goldin Finance 117 tower in Tianjin; and the 555-metre Lotte World Tower in Seoul, the tallest tower on the Korean peninsula.

The supertall list also includes the CTF Finance Center in Guangzhou; the Wuhan Tower, Wuhan; the Marina 101 tower in Dubai, set to be the UAE’s second highest building after the Burj Khalifa; the Eton Place and International Trade Centre projects in Dalian, China; and, lastly, the Vostok Tower in Moscow.Apart from that one lowly entrant on the list in Russia, all the rest are in the

Middle East or Asia, with most of them in China. But Japan also has ambitions. Plans have just been announced for the 1,700-metre literally-named Sky Mile Tower, which will stand in Tokyo Bay. If it goes ahead, due for completion in 2045, it would house 55,000 people, and dwarf Saudi Arabia’s paltry 1,000-metre Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, due for completion in 2020.

It’s a philosophy of building ever-upwards that can only partly be explained by burgeoning urban populations or the availability of suitable land. Jeddah, for example, sitting on the edge of a desert, hardly has much need to build a kilometre into the sky. The rise and rise of the city state does, of course, play a not inconsiderable role, with major conurbations now dominating commercial and cultural life as never before. Apart from population and land pressures, competition between cities and countries has made some build taller and taller as an exercise in civic vanity and economic marketing.

It’s a game that architects in the west also played, particularly in America. The macho skyscraper came to stand for a brand of modernity that symbolised a collective power to harness technology and imagination and build the unthinkable. Ask anyone to visualise symbols of American power, and the New York skyline will be one that springs to mind. But now, with economic power moving east, and driven by growing environmental concern, western architecture seems to be grasping at softer, less masculine, forms of design that better reflect our innate connections to the world around us, instead leaving eastern countries to grasp at yesterday’s phallic symbol.

In the west, we are reaching towards a more “instinctive” form of architecture that uses greater amounts of natural building materials to create a different kind of tomorrow’s world; a new fusion of form and function that has no need to build supertall as symbols of power, wealth or progress. Of course, in cities such as London, the skyscraper is still being built – but without any lofty ambitions to be the biggest or the tallest. But, just perhaps, that lack of ambition suggests a nascent east-west divide as to how tomorrow’s megacities should look.

Flooring can account for a big chunk of the budget and is such an

important factor in the overall interior aesthetic. We frequently see access covers breaking tile grids, hatches positioned at random angles and vast mazes of unsightly covers creating unwanted features, and almost all could have been avoided with the right solution and a little planning.

The minimal footprintWe manufacture aluminium and stainless steel access covers in multipart configurations as well as in single units and duct covers. Where several service points are involved, a multipart solution can give a more discreet access cover footprint as well as a more cost-effective option. All our hatches and frames can be made to fit an exact size and shape, to mirror tile grids for example. This level of accuracy can help speed up installation times because hardly any cutting on the site is needed. Plus, it obviously produces a much more visually pleasing result. Looking For A Whitewashed Floor?Bona White is a new wood floor primer designed to produce an on-trend bleached look when used in conjunction with a Bona polyurethane lacquer. The intensity of ‘whiteness’ is dependent on how many coats are applied. This client wanted a whitewashed look to their original Victorian floor boards to tie in with the soft greys of the kitchen. This was achieved by the application of two coats of Bona White under two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer.

The works were part of a complete renovation of a Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and then sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives.

Smaller gaps were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before the application of the first coat of Bona White. The floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to remove any grain raising from the surface before the application of the second coat.

To produce a highly durable, easy to maintain finish, two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer were applied. Traffic HD is Bona’s toughest lacquer. The very low VOC content and low

odour mean there is no need for homeowners to vacate their property while the works are being carried out and there is no lingering smell.

Its fast cure time means the floor can be in full use just 12 hours after treatment – making it an ideal choice for commercial floors too where there is little available downtime for renovation. TWF’s clients chose the Matt version of Traffic HD for their kitchen floor. Silkmatt and Extramatt sheens are also available.

White Is Now The Toast Of The Kitchen White is the new black for kitchen worktops, according to home makeover specialist Granite Transformations, having reviewed its sales figures for 2015. Two years ago it reported that black granite was by far the most popular amongst its own customers, although later that year it predicted that white worktops would be amongst the top interior design trends, attributing this to the ‘Apple effect’ of minimalist white product design.

Confirming this trend, white and off-white worktops have now shot to the top of the company’s best sellers, with Hydra White and Royal Ivory the top 2 and White Star coming in at No 5. What’s more, this trend is reflected in overseas Granite Transformations markets, North Americans currently favouring Royal Ivory, mottled

neutral tone Perla di Sabbia and White Star, while in Australasia the most popular surfaces are the clean, white shades of Hydra White and White Star.

“It’s unusual for three of our major territories, and the top national markets for kitchen makeovers, to coincide so closely on colour choice,” says Granite Transformations UK General Manager, Hayley Fenn.

“Traditionally, UK kitchen customers have always plumped for black granite worktops, whereas the US and Canada had a preference for dark browns and a more colonial look,” she continues. “Only Australia and New Zealand favoured white, possibly due to the sunshine effect. ESG, the UK’s largest independent glass processor, has recently continued its work for Transport for London by supplying the glass for the 2nd phase of the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road tube station.

The station is currently undergoing a multi-billion pound refit as part of the new Crossrail link due to open in 2018. The entire station was closed at the start of the project and is now reopening one section at a time. Towards the end of 2014 the new ticket office and Oxford Street entrance were reopened and revealed a, Daniel Buren designed and ESG manufactured, black and white artwork printed onto glass.

Recently the new Center Point entrance has opened to the public and the walls continue Daniels design. However for this section of the station, the black and white has been fused together with colour to create striking geometrical shapes. ESG supplied over 150m² of toughened laminated glass split over 200 pieces.

The coloured and black sections of the design were digitally printed and UV cured to the glass. To ensure maximum ink adhesion to the glass each panel was treated to an ESG developed pre-print wash treatment to remove any unseen dirt and oil. This treatment enables all of the printing to achieve BSI: ISO2409 adhesion standard.

The printing was carried out on 8mm toughened low iron and then laminated, with a white Vanceva interlayer to achieve the background, to create the 17.5mm toughened laminated final product. VS-1 Curtain Walling Part Of Cutting Edge Vision For Hiscox’s York OfficesA new structural glazing system from GLASSOLUTIONS has been specified for Hiscox’s new landmark underwriting and customer experience centre in York, part of the insurance company’s £19 million investment to create its largest office outside London. The VS-1 mullion-only system from GLASSOLUTIONS eliminates the need for horizontal framing members, enabling Make Architects to achieve the clean viewing lines on the curved atrium screen which forms a key feature of the new building.

Make Architects’ brief was to design a bespoke office which reflects the character of the Hiscox business and delivers high-quality contemporary design within York’s rich architectural heritage. The spectacular four-storey building will house up to 500 employees in a dynamic working environment with open, flexible floor space. The light airy interior effect is created by the extensive use of the VS-1 curtain walling. This combines with a cantilevered concrete frame and undulating woven brickwork façade to provide a workspace which fosters creativity and collaboration. Work on site began in 2014. UK-based GLASSOLUTIONS, part of the international Saint-Gobain Group, supplied and installed the curtain walling structure for main contractor BAM Construction as part of a £1.8

million contract.

VS-1, which has also been used successfully on the Sky Believe in Better building in London, is a new type of curtain wall – a mullion only system where the glass is held away from the mullion so the glass wall visually ‘floats’. In this project, the mullions are fixed back directly to primary structural columns.

VS-1’s highly engineered simplicity delivers remarkable aesthetics for architects, developers and building owners. It is the only curtain wall system where the floating glass façade is held away from the mullion without the use of obtrusive bolt fixings or transoms. Its relative simplicity reduces risk of component failure, improves constructability and reduces costs of programme delays in both construction and post-construction phases.

The installation at The Hiscox Building in York features Wicona curtain walling to the punch hole windows and louvres, roof terrace curtain wall, a bespoke structurally bonded rooflight and GLASSOLUTIONS’ patented VS-1 glazing system to form the main atria screen and terrace parapet.

The VS-1 system façade is articulated with both convex and concave curved insulated units, the largest of which is 2.0m wide x 4.2m high. The argon filled laminated heat strengthened units have high performance coatings to limit solar gain, achieving g-values as low as 0.34. To meet internal thermal comfort targets, glass units with centre pane u-values of 1.1 W/m2K have been used. Combined with the thermally efficient frames, this creates screens with weighted average U-values of 1.3 W/m2K.

The stunning aviation inspired 6,000-square foot space features two round and two square columns supplied by UK-based specialist, Pendock. The decorative, stainless steel 304 columns feature a mirror finish outer skin, with a 6mm protective acoustic layer. The Equinix UK flagship centre in Slough now has a new 8,000sqm LD6 data warehousing facility. This connects the two sister data centres via hundreds of dark fibre links and has become the fastest-growing data centre campus, including one of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges. Building envelope specialist Lakesmere Ltd commissioned Structura UK Ltd to install Kalwall translucent cladding to form the link between two buildings. The Kalwall not only diffuses attractive natural daylight into the interior but its 0.56 W/m2K U-value optimises thermal performance and prevents solar heat gain. CMS Window Systems has played a key role in the manufacture and installation of thermally-efficient curtain walling, windows and doors for Emerson Process Management’s new facility at the new D2 business park, Aberdeen.

Emerson is one of the world’s foremost names in engineering services across a wide range of industrial and commercial markets, and places high value on the efficiency and integrity of its staff, operations and facilities. Efficiency, therefore, was a high priority when Emerson Process Management – a branch of the company which focuses on developing problem-solving technologies and services for industrial businesses – acquired a site at the D2 business park in Dyce, Aberdeen to support its work with the North Sea oil and gas industry.

CMS was appointed by main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland to design, manufacture and install curtain walling, windows and doors for the facility. The £20 million development, built to replace Emerson’s existing Aberdeen headquarters in nearby Kirkhill, comprises 2,600 m2 of office space, as well as a 3,065m2 service centre with meeting facilities and a customer collaboration suite, and can accommodate up to 200 Emerson personnel. Reflecting this code of efficiency, the facility adheres to exacting thermal performance standards and complying with the latest requirements of current building regulations. With site development overseen by Miller and construction completed by Bowmer & Kirkland, work on Emerson’s new Aberdeen premises began in June 2014, with CMS joining the project in February 2015.

The solutions delivered by CMS were chosen to enhance the efficiency of the building’s envelope, reducing heat transfer while allowing the entry of natural light. Aluminium curtain walling created using Metal Technology’s System 17 ensures the building adheres to exacting thermal performance standards. With a continuous thermal isolator providing a thermal break throughout the system, as well as 6mm toughened Planitherm Ultra N glass used in conjunction with 16mm Swisspacer V warm edge spacer, the system is compliant with the latest thermal requirements of current building regulations.

Since planning consent was granted in 2012, D2 has become one of the biggest mixed use developments in Scotland for many years, aiming to support industry in the area with its versatile premises and convenient transport links. VMZINC For £14m Hastings Pier RedevelopmentDue finally to re-open in mid-March, the restored Grade II listed Hastings Pier built in 1872 has roofs in natural VMZINC. They are undoubtedly the most immediately recognisable feature of phase 1 of the £14.2m redevelopment and will weather to take on a beautifully textured, natural grey patina reminiscent of lead.

Described as a national Victorian treasure, the pier has been brought back to life following years of neglect, closure for eight years and a fire which tore through it in 2010. The domed roofs are particularly eye catching, all the more so because of the standing seam natural zinc topped with ornamental finials which spans the covered seating area. Specialist contractor Roles Broderick Roofing is currently working on phase 2 in which VMZINC PIGMENTO BLUE 1mm thick interlocking panels are to be used on the new visitor centre.

Most of the funding for the scheme came from the Heritage Lottery Fund and more than 3,000 people who bought community shares in the company that will now own and operate it. Much of the existing pier is being recycled or reused, and plans for the redeveloped structure include funfairs, an open-air cinema, live music events, farmers’ markets, a mirrored heritage centre to reflect the seaside views and night sky watching.www.vmzinc.co.uk

Kemper System Underwrites Roof Refurb Success At Royal & Sun AllianceKemper System’s Kemperol V210 has been used yet again to repair the roof of Royal & Sun Alliance’s headquarters in Horsham following the success of a project to refurbish the building’s balconies last year.

Within the central part of the building there were three individual roof areas, covering a radius of 400m2. These areas were overlaid to address leaks in the existing single ply membrane. Roofing contractor, All Angles Roofing, carried out the six-week project on behalf of principal contractor, RCL Services, including repairs to the existing insulation.

The scheme follows on from three previous projects, spaced over two years, to repair three balcony areas, covering a total of 710m2, on the same building where water ingress was putting refurbished areas below at risk. Several attempts to repair the roof with other systems had failed to address the issue, but Royal & Sun Alliance has no further leaks thanks to the Kemperol V210 overlay.

All Angles Roofing having cleaned and prepared the existing roof surface applied Kemper System’s D primer. The installation team then laid the Kemperol V210 resin in a single wet-on-wet process that ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. Once cured the resin forms a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that bonds directly to the substrate.

Rinnai Goes Solo At Wooda Farm Holiday ParkRinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, has just installed its latest innovation, the Infinity Solo Gas Fired Storage Re-Circulator water heater, at Wooda Farm Holiday Park.

The Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX condensing water heater is the first Rinnai product for the UK to combine the advanced technology of its wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one compact footprint.

Wooda Farm, now in its 40th year, is a family run campsite, by the sea at Bude, Cornwall with 55 holiday homes, two cottages and pitches for touring and camping, and a whole host of activities and facilities for all the family.

Already a convert to Rinnai continuous flow water heaters which are used across the site, owner Graeme Colwell was open to a suggestion from Rinnai consultant Scott Humphries that he might like to try something a little different when it was time to renovate one of the shower blocks.

Humphries explained that the Infinity Solo Recirculator water heater was totally unlike traditional stored hot water systems, and would be beneficial for the project as it acts as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances.

“The refurbishment of the shower block and one of the laundrettes was a natural evolution and we needed a hot water system that would easily cater for three washing machines, three baths, 12 basins and two dishwash sinks.

“Scott recommended The Solo Re-circulator stored system as the options for direct continuous flow were limited. The system is competitively priced compared to other gas-fired storage solutions on the market, but it is packed full of innovations. Rinnai calculated that the system was a sound investment and I have to say, this new system has worked really well since it went live just before Easter.

“I was a bit worried initially that we were going back a step to the old Andrews setup we were so pleased to see the back of a few years ago but Scott persuaded me this was completely different as the cylinder actually loses very little heat unlike a traditional stored system. I have had gas meters/monitors fitted so give me a season and I will get back on what I have saved in fuel costs. I expect it will be more than worthwhile the capital outlay.”

Rinnai’s new Solo range incorporates 35kW and 59.5kW appliances, ensuring that even sites with a smaller gas meter can utilise its advanced technologies. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to other current forms of gas fired storage appliance.

Because the cylinder is stainless steel (Rinnai water heaters are less than 30kgs) it greatly reduces the weight compared to glass lined and other gas-fired storage models, which makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders available also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), which means the customer pays less to maintain the heat within the tank.

One other benefit of the Solo utilising a stainless steel cylinder, is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time.

With less than 400 PassivHaus certified properties so far completed across the UK, the ultra-low energy standard from Germany can still be viewed as nascent in this country, though there are many compliant components and technologies available to assist in these designs: such as the mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system offered by Omnie.

The highly efficient Passive house certified CA550 heat recover unit (HRU) has in fact just been installed as a crucial element to the building services within a private residential property under construction near Tiverton in Devon. The two storey 200 square metre structure replaces an earlier dwelling on the Bampton site where Gale & Snowden is the specialist architectural consultant and passive house designer responsible for the specification process.

In addition to the ducted central ventilation system, which will constantly harvest warmth from extracted stale air, the new home uses a holistic set of measures in order to keep energy usage within the tightly controlled PassivHaus parameters. These include a super-insulated building envelope, use of thermal mass to mitigate extremes of temperature and standards of airtightness so exacting as to restrict air changes to below 0.6 per hour. The latter figure, set by the PassivHaus Institute, is so low that it would lead to problems of stale, moisture laden air becoming trapped in the living spaces, with the possibility of it causing condensation, damp and damage to the fabric of the building or even “sick building syndrome” which adversely affects the health of the occupants.

Commercial Office Conversion For Brighton Campus Features Marmox Tektalan Board Installation

Close to a thousand square metres of Tektalan boards, manufactured by Heraklith and supplied by Marmox UK, have been consumed in the conversion of former American Express premises into a major new media centre for the University of Brighton. The panels were specified to improve the thermal and acoustic performance, as well as the appearance of several soffit areas within the buildings. These included the underside of two structural concrete floors and an entrance canopy. Within these spaces they help cut reverberation and present a smart, textured surface. Tektalan represents a hybrid combination of Marmox Heraklith Woodwool boards with rock mineral wool, which enhances the product’s already impressive performance

characteristics. The woodwool element provides the strength and rigidity together with the unique appearance and sound absorption. Then the layer of rock mineral wool offers additional thermal and acoustic insulation while also being considered inherently non-combustible. In addition to an A2 fire classification, the boards feature an interlocking joint to raise the fire resistance to a two-hour period. Importantly the combination of rock mineral wool and woodwool remains vapour permeable. It is also recommend that an air gap is maintained behind the boards, which are easily fixed, in order to achieve sound absorption values above 0.9 uW. Silent Students

Interiors which can generate the most unacceptable noise and echoes are most likely to be those where young people gather for work, play and socialising, such as schools, leisure centres and swimming pools. Danish manufactured Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe and can be delivered as either FSC or PEFC certified panels. They are manufactured using 100% natural wood fibres and their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. Olivers Contracts chose a UZIN system to install luxury vinyl tiles at the Islington Customer Centre. Approximately 900 m2 of old flooring had become contaminated and worn from general foot traffic. Overall, the floor appeared soft and a little unstable. A further concern was that premium luxury vinyl tiles needed to be installed within open and expansive areas containing large windows. Consequently, the floor would be subject to a considerable amount of natural light and potential heat. The floor preparation and installation therefore had to be perfect so Olivers Contracts turned to UZIN’s premium quality product systems to resolve the problems. A Wolff Samba machine with a diamond bits was first used to

remove all contamination and loose latex. UZIN PE 280 primer was used to create a barrier between the cementitious subfloor and UZIN NC 110 calcium sulphate based smoothing compound. The luxury vinyl tiles were then installed with UZIN KE 66 high temperature adhesive. The project was completed without any complications. The client was exceptionally pleased with the finish throughout all areas and there hasn’t been any subfloor or product failure since. SE Controls’ Smoke And Natural Ventilation For Pretoria’s New Agrivaal Building

The new energy efficient Agrivaal building in Pretoria’s Tshwane Central Business District is using advanced natural ventilation and smoke control solutions from SE Controls to maintain a comfortable indoor environment while improving safety by ensuring escape routes are smoke free in the event of a fire. The new 10-storey office block integrates with the original 75 year old Agrivaal building, a site of national heritage importance.

The new building incorporates a range of energy saving technologies as part of its design and construction, including recycled materials, water harvesting, energy efficient lighting and the use of natural ventilation, which enabled it to achieve a prestigious 4 Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa. SE Controls Africa, based in Durban, worked closely with the project’s fire and engineering consultants WSP Consulting Engineers from the initial concept stage, as well as ventilation contractors, Robertson Ventilation Industries, to develop the combined high level smoke and natural ventilation solution for the building.

The system incorporates an NVLogiQ carbon dioxide sensor and environmental monitor for natural ventilation, as well as a SHEVTEC smoke control panel and 10 SECO N 24 40 chain actuators, which automatically open and close the centre pivot windows in the atrium to vent stale air or smoke from the building. In normal operation, NVLogiQ sensor monitors the temperature, carbon dioxide levels and relative humidity and signals the actuators to incrementally open or close the windows, if the parameters go beyond preset points.

In the event of a fire, the SHEVTEC control panel takes a signal from the building’s fire and smoke alarm system, which overrides the natural ventilation system and triggers the actuators to fully open the window to vent smoke from the building. www.secontrols.com

10 Cork Street Has An Internal Make-Over Fit For The 21st Century

Located in Mayfair, 10 Cork Street is in one of London’s most sought after areas; built in 1924-1925 to a design by John Belcher and J.J Joass. Pollen House is a prominent stone clad building with a unique blueprint, it has a central internal courtyard bringing together two structures to create one building. Sitting close to the Royal Academy and encircled by the likes of Burlington Arcade and exclusive retail establishments, who wouldn’t want to work in this vibrant area in offices that have had a 21st century internal make-over?

A high specification design by Ben Adams Architects has created a very attractive environment but one that needed significant attention to the existing steel windows in order to minimise the problem of traffic noise. Selectaglaze, a leading designer of secondary glazing systems with considerable experience in acoustics was approached for advice. Noise reduction of about 45dB has been achieved through the treatment of each window with a single hinged casement glazed with 6.8mm acoustic laminated glass.

The minimal frames with flush hinges and locks provide clean lines which complement the existing windows and the new interiors. An additional benefit of the secondary glazing is an approximate halving of heat loss and near elimination of draughts that ensures a more comfortable working environment.

New Façade For Retail Giant

Primark, the popular high street brand recently opened an exciting new store at the Fort Kinnaird shopping park in Edinburgh, equipped with a dazzling external screening solution from Levolux. Designed by 3D Reid architects, the revamped retail unit, which was formerly occupied by Toys-R-Us, has been comprehensively refurbished and refitted. This included reformatting the interior and redressing the building’s exterior, with the addition of glazing, illuminated signage and a custom Levolux screening solution. The solution, which is applied to the store’s façade along the front and on both sides, comprises a combination of 200mm wide rectangular fins and 300mm wide, twisted aerofoil-shaped fins.

All fins are formed from single-piece aluminium extrusions, which are designed, fabricated and installed by Levolux. The store’s projecting entrance element has been extended in height and fitted with a central glazed section. This element of the store is now wrapped in aerofoil-shaped fins, each measuring 300mm wide by 56mm thick, standing vertically and set at a pitch of 310mm. The fins, which extend to 8 metres in height, are twisted through 180 degrees, from first floor, to roof level.

The twisted fins incorporated into this Primark store create a dynamic exterior aesthetic which changes as you pass along the building. Either side of the entrance, the store’s façade continues at a lower height. On these elevations, rectangular-shaped fins, each measuring 200mm wide by 60mm thick, have been applied. These extend 4.6 metres in height from first floor to roof level. Unlike the aerofoil fins, the rectangular fins, which are based on Levolux’s popular Infiniti Fin system, are not twisted. Instead, while they are also fixed vertically, they are set at an angle of 45 degrees and at a pitch of 250mm.

The contrasting lines created by the vertical fins effectively reduces the visual impact of the building by separating its key elements. The store’s ultra-modern façade has been optimised to project Primark’s distinctive brand identity. All aluminium fins provided by Levolux feature an attractive, shiny bronze anodised finish. In contrast, the horizontal aluminium carrier rails, which support the fins, are finished in a durable, matt black powder coating. The array of vertical fins is emphasised at night, with the help of subtle integrated LED lighting. www.levolux.com

Bespoke Louvres Are A Perfect Match

There are plenty of brise soleil products on the market, but very few can be supplied in a colour which is tailor-made to match the design scheme of a building. A rare exception can now be found at Fulford School in York, where neaco provided a bespoke solution for a new classroom block as part of a £4 million upgrade designed by City of York Council and built by William Birch and Son.neaco’s advanced powder coating facilities enable the company to apply precisely formulated colours to meet the specific aesthetic needs of its clients. They are often utilised in the manufacture of neaco’s balustrade products, but in this case they were put to good use for a specially developed sunshade louvre system specified at the school, which has just been named as one of

Tatler magazine’s top 10 state secondary schools in the UK. neaco also supplied internal balustrade in the buildingís two stairwells.Alan Thomas, Senior Architect at York City Council, said: ìIt was important to provide a design for the brise soleil that complemented the external appearance of the new building and this has been achieved. We supplied the specific RAL colour reference of the window frames and neaco were able to match the grey finish that has been used throughout the school. Initially Neaco provided a prototype and we held discussions with the main contractor, Wm Birch & Sons Ltd. to agree on the appropriate size and spacing for the louvre blades. The end result is excellent, being attractive, functional and robust. Thermoblock Premieres In Leicester Square Project

The refurbishment of a landmark listed property on London’s Leicester Square has seen Marmox Thermoblocks specified in very large quantities for an unusual application. Number 48 Leicester Square is being completely redeveloped behind the retained 1920s stone façade. Pivotal to this radical reconstruction has been the need to stabilize and strengthen the outer elevations which had been badly weakened by previous alterations over the past century.

With a full facade retention structure in place and the basement area framed by a retaining wall, the project team's solution involved raising an internal inner blockwork wall using aerated concrete. This is intended to improve the thermal performance of the exterior elevations as well as their regularity and soundness, while taking up the minimum interior space. As part of this, the project team elected to make use of the Marmox Thermoblocks as a means of minimizing heat loss at the critical floor wall junction.

The 600 mm long insulation units incorporate mini columns of high strength, low conductivity concrete to support the load of the wall above while the low lambda value insulation virtually eliminates the path for cold-bridging. They are laid using normal bricklaying mortar with special Marmox Multibond sealant used to secure and seal the stepped joints while an integral layer of mesh on the upper and lower surfaces offers a good mortar bond for block-laying to continue in the conventional manner. In total over 1000 of the 640X140X65 mm Thermoblocks helped create a continuous horizontal thermal break beneath the new wall rising from the basement of 48 Leicester Square: ensuring it will meet the current Building Regulations and that the structure will endure for many decades to come. www.marmox.co.uk

Toshiba TEC Performs A Successful Operation At Spire HealthcareHaving worked with Spire Healthcare for over seven years, Toshiba TEC now provides the company with over 200 of its industry leading multifunction products (MFP).

The second largest provider of private healthcare in the UK, Spire Healthcare was formed in 2007 through the buy-out of 25 BUPA hospitals by the private equity firm, Cinven. Now with a network of 40 private hospitals and 10 clinics, the organisation undertakes a wide variety of activities and offers a full range of integrated surgical, medical and diagnostic services.

Need to knowSoon after the formation of the company, Spire Healthcare enlisted the services of Toshiba TEC to help it manage its printing, copying and scanning infrastructure. An audit was carried out to pinpoint how the devices were being used, identify monthly page production volumes, and implement a solution that could maximise the potential of its investment.

Gill Kite, Senior Buyer at Spire Healthcare takes up the story and says, ‘It was clear from the outset that we could have an honest and open relationship with Toshiba TEC and work together to develop a successful corporate print strategy. This was an instant success, so when it came to renewing our contract in 2009, we didn’t hesitate.’

At this point in time Spire Healthcare had 124 Toshiba MFPs across its estate, with the majority being mono and standalone devices. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable operating practices are very important to the organisation, with energy conservation guidelines issued to each hospital to minimise the amount

of energy consumed. This is being addressed through reduced costs per copy, low maintenance and consumable costs, lower asset management charges and reduced paper usage through to the ability to default to double sided printing.

Up to dateAs of 2015, the company has 213 Toshiba TEC MFPs, comprising both colour and mono devices. After careful analysis, each device is located in an area that allows users to easily access it and maximise its features. Asked why there has been such a sharp increase in the number of devices, Kite explains, ‘Previously, as well as the Toshiba TEC MFPs we also had numerous printers from various other manufacturers. However, as these have reached the end of their useful lives, we looked to rationalise and standardise with Toshiba TEC MFP’s, and

work towards a print strategy. This has helped maintain a sense of uniformity across the portfolio.’

Over 90 per cent of all the devices are now networked, so that users can make the most of being able to print, scan and copy from their devices, enhancing flexibility and functionality. The Toshiba TEC team worked closely with Spire Healthcare’s IT department to ensure that the system operates as effectively as possible and to ensure that each user is only able to print according to their needs.

Colour clashOne of the biggest problems that Spire Healthcare used to have was controlling colour printing. The audit discovered that people who could easily use mono only were printing in colour almost by default – a situation that had obvious cost ramifications.

‘We decided that it would make more sense to restrict permission to print in colour by configuring the print driver and access codes accordingly,’ states Gill Kite. ‘For example, the marketing department often needs to use colour, so MFPs that can enhance the presentation of key critical colour documents through enhanced print quality and finishing are located there. This policy has made a massive difference to our overall expenditure and it also means that we can monitor spend by department, something that also enables us to spot where other efficiencies can be made.’

In addition, private printing has been enabled for MFPs that are located in some of the more public areas. This means that the user has to be present when printing and type in a code to complete a job. As well as fulfilling its primary purpose, it also lowers the amount of unwanted documents being printed and then not collected, either due to people forgetting or not needing them any more.

Work in progressThe contract is being constantly monitored and maintained, with devices upgraded as and when appropriate. Gill Kite concludes, ‘I’m delighted that we have reached a stage where each MFP is being used to its full potential. This is in no small part thanks to the excellent account management, technical know how and service from the Toshiba TEC team.’

Thin-Joint Venture

H+H’s Thin- Joint System of aircrete blocks and Celfix Mortar is a key element in the construction of a Passivhaus development of houses and apartments on the Isle of Wight. External walls of homes on the Cameron Close development are constructed from H+H’s 200mm thick thermally efficient Celcon Plus blocks. These are enhanced

externally by an additional 230mm thick layer of phenolic insulation on the houses and 150mm thick layer on the apartments. The insulation is finished externally with a white-colour acrylic render system. Remmers Deliver Food Grade Flooring

Hygienic food grade flooring was required to the automated filling and packaging lines at the relocated premises of Nature Delivered (www.graze.com). A number of steel structure mezzanines were constructed. Each mezzanine level required a complicated matrix of cross falls within the sub-screed and a hard wearing, hygienic, slip-resistant resin floor finish, with integral perimeter coving. Due to the fast track nature of the build process, an epoxy damp-proof membrane was required prior to installation of the resin finishes. Remmers Haftfest Polymer was added to the sand/cement screed to improve its performance characteristics, increasing compressive strength and reducing the potential for drying shrinkage cracking. The screed was laid to falls and subsequently primed with 2 coats of Epoxy MT100 damp-proof membrane and topped with a nominal 8mm thick layer of Remmers Crete HF hard wearing polyurethane screed.www.remmers.co.uk

James Latham Opens Its Door To An East London ChurchThe UK's biggest independent timber and panel product distributor, James Latham, has supplied 40 door blanks from their Moralt Laminesse FireSmoke range to a listed grade 1 building in the East End of London.

The doors are now for all to see in the iconic Christ Church at Spitalfields which is nestled between bustling Brick Lane and the infamous Spitalfields Market in London’s East End.

The door blanks, which had a European Oak veneer applied were specified by award winning London architects, Dow Jones, due to their superior acoustic values which was of the upmost importance for keeping the outside noise out and not disturbing any events or services that will take place simultaneously.

Moralt FireSmoke doors (54mm) have been acoustically tested to a dB35 performance as flush doors (singles and pairs) with Norsound seals making the door product compliant to the School BB93 document.

Moralt FireSmoke, which is MDF faced, is a highly specified and

certified product that can be supplied in FD30 44mm and FD60 54mm and offers maximum stability, as well as a high quality surface finish plus it has also attained FSC certification.

The crypt of Nicholas Hawksmoor’s Grade 1 listed Church was once used as a storage facility but the brief was to convert this into a multi-purpose space for events, board

meetings and a fully operating café. The crypt was once a series of rooms but Dow Jones architects decided to open them up and make use of the natural light. A new ramped entrance on Commercial Street was also introduced to connect the building more closely with the city so the grand oak doors have certainly become a warm welcome statement.

From start to finish the ambitious renovation project was completed in just under six months with just three months of that being on site. Marc Horsman from Icklesham Joinery Limited said: “As soon as we were commissioned with this job we knew James Latham would be the perfect partners to supply the door blanks for this high end fit out. We have a great long standing relationship with James Latham and in particular I have always been impressed with their extensive range of performance door blanks solutions.”

Darren Gentle, Door Champion at James Latham’s Thurrock depot who supplied the door blanks said: “To be able to complement a historic Grade 1 listed building such as this with a modern, highly technical solution is a challenge in itself but we are very proud of the end result and are confident that these Moralt Laminesse FireSmoke door blanks not only look great but more importantly, will consistently perform to an extremely high level.”
