Anthracite Heritage Project Archaeological Field School The Archaeology of Labor Heritage In a Coal Mining Company Town ANTH496/696 Section 0103 6 Credits, May 31 - July 8 ANTH688Y Section 0133 3 Credits, May 31 - June 17 ANTH688Y Section 0153 3 Credits, June 20 - July 8 T In the summer of 2016, the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland will conduct its seventh season of an archaeological project exploring life in company coal mining towns with excavations at Eckley Miner’s Village, a living history museum located near Hazleton, Pennsylvania. Students interested in archaeology, anthropology, American history, immigration, women’s studies, or material culture are strongly encouraged to apply! PROJECT OVERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS Explore local heritage using innovative research techniques Take part in Labor Heritage and Public Archaeology Learn archaeological field and lab techniques Opportunity to mentor local high school students Earn required university credits towards graduation (Scholarship in Practice, Anthropological Field Methods) Spend your summer outside! PROGRAM SPECIFICS The class will include fieldwork, lab work, and short reading assignments and discussion. We strongly encourage students to register for 6 credits to have time to practice the skills they’ve learned. All students, regardless of residency status, receive in-state tuition rates. The field school will meet daily in the field for approximately eight hours. Transportation to and from the site will be provided from the field house. Students are also welcome to commute to the site if they live in the Greater Hazleton area. REGISTER: Current UMD students: Go to Testudo and register for classes as you normally would.
