“THE ARAB INSURANCE INSTITUTE WAS LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE FOR THE ARAB INSURANCE INDUSTRY”

Why create the Arab Insurance Institute?

“The idea of The Arab Insurance Institute coming into reality was like a dream come true for the Arab insurance industry, having set up a well-qualified training institute to enable our staff in the industry to cater for the needs of the Insurance and Reinsurance companies and Brokers whether it is in the technical side, managing roles or other related functions.

The Arab Insurance Institute was created under the umbrella of the GAIF – General Arab Insurance Federation, with shareholders in over 40 Insurance and Reinsurance companies from across the Arab region, aiming to spread into different locations to deliver the materials and the courses by well-qualified trainers, having the courses designed and supervised by capable professional insurance people who are academically

qualified and have field experience.” And why you? “Because we are from the Arab insurance industry… I myself am from the insurance companies and all the people from The Arab Insurance Institute are from the insurance industry. We know what we need and behind the thinking, behind the strategy, is the idea that we are not just a training provider, we are a solution provider to our industry.”

What makes the Arab Insurance Institute different from other institutes?

“That will be felt by the trainees of this institute and their companies, but it starts especially with the straight link between knowledge and experience, the practical experience.

Myself as personally involved in managing insurance companies, I can say with no doubt that for me what is important in training is not only the knowledge but putting the knowledge into practice, from risk assessment to pricing and rating the risk or to setting up the terms and issuing the documentation properly and dealing with the related functions to the issuing of the insurance policy.

And this is how we perceive our role, linking the knowledge to the practical situations enabling people to do their job with more confidence, less errors and of course more control of the risks. This is the real difference from my point of view.”

And does your role end in the classroom?

“Our biggest aim, when we organize a training course, is to define the best ways to link it to the practical environment and the challenges that insurance companies will face in the future. And this is where, I think, our role will expand beyond the end of the training courses, it will go further to follow-up with the individuals who take up the training courses within the institute, supporting them (during a period where they acquire the practical knowledge and the practical experience, ensuring that the knowledge is put into practice), supporting their companies, helping the HR departments to define the career path of the individuals and getting people to be always developing their knowledge and practical experience, always getting to higher standards of performance. That is, in my view, a lack in the insurance industry, at least in the Arab insurance industry, and there are certain efforts that have been made but we want to go beyond and ensure that the mission is achieved.”

Mr. Khaled Abu Nahel, Board Member of The Arab Insurance Institute

“WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN TRAINING IS NOT ONLY THE KNOWLEDGE BUT PUTTING THE KNOWLEDGE INTO PRACTICE.”

So, you will achieve your mission…

“By qualifying people to do the

job! As an insurance professional

and a general manager in a

company, what matters to me at

the end is finding people around me, not only knowing the job, but DOING THE JOB! I’m

interested not in people that have the knowledge but mainly in people capable in putting

that knowledge into practice and this is the real difference.”

In your opinion, as an experienced insurance professional, how do you compare the past and the present in terms of training?

“In the past, when I started working in insurance, people used to tell me “to be a

technical person, in an underwriting position, an executive position, you need to have 15 years of experience.” Why? Because in the past people did not go through

the learning process, they did not acquire the knowledge and the practical experience to apply the knowledge, they acquired the

knowledge and experience by themselves, with time, by their own initiative. I challenged that and just started to say “no, with

knowledge and experience built on stronger knowledge foundations you can gain practical experience in a short period of time”.

This is where the courses need to have an element of linking the knowledge learning to practical situations – examples, workshops,

exercises, maybe later assessment, maybe advise about what the candidate can do to achieve a level of knowledge and a level of

practical experience in a shorter period of time so we can give a bigger benefit to the person and to his company at the lowest cost

as possible.”

How do you perceive the future of the Institute?

“Our aim is provide to the Arab insurance companies and professionals

what they need. It is not only the vision to be just an Institute, the vision is

to expand into a bigger institution that can capture other studies or other

education, other knowledge materials that are required by the people

running insurance companies – risk management, financial analysis, HR

related to insurance companies, Marketing related to insurance products…

The Institute is prepared to expand horizontally, vertically and even in

multidimensional ways. In geographical terms, spreading its action to all

countries in MENA region, maybe wider, and vertically in terms of different

products, different courses that we will run, and in terms of how we run it,

the technologies we use, technology-enabled learning and the e-learning,

enabling people to gain knowledge at a lower cost and acquire the

experience that is needed.

In addition to that, this a part of our vision and our objectives to build a knowledge library – to have a knowledge database to

serve insurance companies and professionals, being a reference institution for the insurance industry in the Arab world if not wider

than that.”

“We hope we will succeed in our mission and we have confidence that we can do it.”

“WHAT MATTERS TO ME AT THE END IS FINDING PEOPLE AROUND ME, NOT ONLY KNOWING THE JOB, BUT DOING THE JOB!”

“NOW, COMPANIES CAN GET A BETTER AND FASTER RETURN FROM THEIR INVESTMENT IN TIME AND MONEY SPENT ON DEVELOPING THEIR PEOPLE.”

“OUR VISION IS TO EXPAND AND BECAME A REFERENCE INSTITUTION FOR THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY IN THE ARAB WORLD.”
