Subject to change — watch the Council Courier for exact times and places

A number of questions arise at this time every year (dues collection time) about what the clubs get for their ten bucks. It is a fair question, because a lot of what the Council does is not visible to everyone or not associated in people’s minds with the CNCPS.

Perhaps some clues can be seen by the Committees that are part of the Council:

The Council Courier and the web site at-tempt to keep clubs and member societies aware of what is going on in our area (Northern California, Northern Nevada and Southern Oregon).

The Council promotes local philately

through support for clubs through the Speak-ers’ Bureau for club programs, exchange of membership recruiting and retention ideas through the Council Courier, and support for stamp shows through:

• Publicity • Exhibition Judges for local shows • Loan of exhibit frames

The Chaloner and Holmsten awards are two of the ways that the Council encourages local philately.

The Council provides a training ground for future leaders in organized philately on the lo-cal, area and national levels.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMNPRESIDENT’S COLUMNPRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Fellow Collectors:

I spent the three days at the APS Spring Show in Reno and was impressed by the good representation of people from Council clubs. I counted over dozen who volunteered in various capacities, representing almost every club in the Council. Member Council exhibitors also did well, and there were many Council dealers. It was a good show from the so-cial point, and I hope from the financial point as well.

The next big show is WESTPEX which always gets (and always deserves) huge participation. However, the Coun-cil needs volunteers to staff the informa-tion table during the show. Akthem Al‐Manaseer will be putting up a sign-up sheet online which will be found through the Council website. At least two mem-bers per club are needed to fully staff the table. [Volunteers may also contact me at [email protected] to sign up.]

All members of Council clubs are in-vited to attend the Council meeting dur-ing WESTPEX at 12:00 Sunday, April 30, in Room 8024 at the SFO Marriott.

The California Collectors Club

Friday 13 January 2017 was lucky for the members of CCC. Vesma Grin-felds reports that CCC celebrated their annual New Year Dinner at the Europa Café, a few blocks from their meeting venue in San Francisco. Members who have paid their dues received a steeply discounted dinner! All of the officers and members who attend the monthly meet-ings were present.

The dinner included delicious food with an “old world” European fla-vor. There was lots of chatter among all concerning philately. The Club will surely hold this event next year again!!

The Club fielded 3 Teams (“Red,” “White” and “Blue”) to participate in the Team competition for one-frame exhib-its at the APS Show in Reno. See page10 for their results.

Team White: Captain Vesma Grinfelds

Team Blue: Captain Clyde Homen

CCSF President Behruz Nassre has formed a search committee to locate a new meeting place. The Club had met at L’Olivier Restaurant for quite a few years. Previously, the CCSF had man-aged to close four restaurants in as many years!

The issue also covers a little known gem of a museum in the Bay Area: the museum ship USS Hornet CV-12 moored at Pier 3 in Alameda. It is a great family attraction open daily 10 AM — 5 PM. Check the museum web site www.uss-hornet.org for more infor-mation (image at lower left).

Nevada Stamp Study Society

NSSS furnished workers for the APS Ameristamp Expo in Reno March 3-5, 2017 (see the lead article on p. 1 and pix on p.3). The March APS show takes the place of the annual Reno Stamp & Cover Show normally held in mid-summer.

President John Walter announced that next year’s Show Committee is al-ready working to put on a great show on July 28-29, 2018 at the usual location of the Bowling Museum at the National Bowling stadium in Reno. More infor-mation is available on the club web site:

At the APS Show, NSSS members brought home numerous awards for their exhibits, plus quite a few members took home great memories of the volun-teer effort supported by club members.

Announced in the March Post Boy, NSSS was invited by the Churchill County Museum to furnish a speaker for the Museum’s “Hobbies & Collectibles” series. Harvey Edwards and Dave Gehringer will speak April 4 at 6:30 PM. The NSSS is involved with their communities, which may provide con-tinuing life for our hobby. Ideas you can use!

The Nevada Stamp Study Society meets on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month: 9 AM for trading, meeting starts at 10 AM, at Silverada Estates Clubhouse, 2301 Oddie Blvd., Reno.

COALPEX

The June 17-18 COALPEX stamp show and exhibition will be upon us be-fore you can find your tongs! This year COALPEX celebrates the centennial of President John Kennedy’s birth. A juried exhibition is promised — an application is attached to this newsletter. Entry fee is zero/ zip/ nil, so fill out the application and mail it to Exhibition Chair David McNamee.

If you are interested in showing off some of your collection, but you may be shy about being judged for your effort, COALPEX offers exhibit space for non-competitive pages that can be shown without being judged. You still need to fill out an application — just note that your effort is “non-competitive.”

California Collector’s Club

California Collectors Club’s bi-monthly newsletter, The California Phi-latelist, covered the January dinner of the club to celebrate the coming of the Year of the Rooster. CCC meets on the 2nd Friday of each month at St James Episcopal, 4620 California St., San Fran-cisco, between 8th and 9th Avenues.

San Francisco Pacific Philatelic Society

SFPPS is APS Life Chapter No. 1, hav-ing been founded as a club November 24, 1884. As with many long-lived socie-ties, there are many traditions. Some re-main for many years, and some evolve with time passing. SFPPS has long spon-sored the Margaret Munda Award of Merit given at WESTPEX for the runner-up to the Reserve Grand Award. The award is a life membership in the West-ern Philatelic Library. The SFPPS Board is reconsidering how to honor Margaret Munda with the change in the cost of the award.

SFPPS meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 7 PM in the Community Room of the SFPD Richmond Station, 441—6th Avenue, San Francisco.

FRESPEX

The Fresno Philatelic Society put on their annual stamp show, FRESPEX, over the weekend March 11-12. FRE-SPEX has been struggling for a number of years with all of the symptoms of our hobby’s issues: declining exhibit partici-pation, shrinking number, aging leader-ship.

In an effort to increase support for FRESPEX, the FPS conducted a raffle with five very nice prizes. As we go to press, the results are unknown. We wish them the best!

Redding Stamp Club

We normally have news of NOVAPEX at this time of year, but the Redding Club’s annual stamp dhow dates were pre-empted by the APS show in Reno. Nevertheless, members have been busy!

RSC Member, award-winning Exhibi-tor, Council Judge, and all-around good guy Bob Grosch published a profusely illustrated article in the March American Philatelist on one of his favorite topics, “The Boston Negative Cancels.” It is the sort of subject that can really be a fasci-nating pursuit. Well done, Bob!
