This Is Real LifeBy Heidi Busse

The title of this column notwithstand-ing, it has always been difficult for me to let people see my “real life.” I would rather folks see the image of a perfect family with no mess, no struggle, no worries. And yet, we are a real family living in the real world having struggled with illness, death, job loss and the day-to-day stress of raising kids. So, at this time of year, I must admit that there is a part of me that wants to skip right over Holy Week and go directly to Easter. Who wants to walk through the pain and suffering, sadness and sacrifice of Triduum?

And yet, the three days that comprise the Triduum (or Holy Week) are the most important in the Church year; the whole of our Christian faith is found in these days. Without the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, there would be no Eucharist. Without the washing of the feet, we would not be called to serve one other. Without the Crucifixion on Good Friday, there would be no Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Yes, Jesus suffered (and so do we). But his suffering offers the promise of sal-vation. His death on the cross offers new life to all believers.

Palm Sunday to the Easter Vigil is a long and powerful journey. We hope this issue of Take Out will enhance your family’s Holy Week experience so that your Easter celebration will be filled with all the joys and blessings of real life.

March Snapshots

Saint Joseph was a just man, a tireless worker, the upright guardian of those entrusted to his care. May he always guard, protect and enlighten families. ~ Pope John Paul II

Joseph, the husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, was a working class man, a carpenter. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke give us the few details known about his life. He was most likely poor — he offered only two turtle doves at the Temple where Jesus was circumcised. And yet, both Matthew and Luke place Joseph in the line of King David (see Mt 1:1-16 and Lk 3:23-38). Indeed, the angel who first tells Joseph about Jesus greets him as “son of David” (Mt 1:20), a royal title used also for Jesus.

We do know that Joseph was a good man who took his responsibility of caring for Jesus and Mary seriously. He said yes to this awesome responsibility and did not hesitate to move his family to keep them safe. Celebrate St. Joseph on March 19 by asking for his care and protection of your family this day and always.

March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme is “Your Colorful Plate.” It is said that children need to be exposed to fruits and vegetables eight times before they will embrace these foods as part of their diet. One fun way to add color to your table is to make silly faces out of carrots, peas and other veggies. Or try vegetarian pizza on a meatless Friday this Lent.

VEGETARIAN PIZZA BAGELS

Ingredients:Whole wheat bagel, sliced in half 1 Tbsp. tomato sauce1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Toppings (Pineapple chunks, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives, onions or whatever your child likes) Pinch of seasonings, such as oregano and basil

Preparation:Preheat oven to 300 ° F, or use a toaster oven; spread tomato sauce on each bagel half; sprinkle the cheese all over the toma-to sauce on each half; add your toppings; put a light sprinkling of seasonings on each half; place bagel halves into the oven (or toaster oven) and bake for about 6 minutes. They are ready when the cheese is bubbly.

Gracious loving God, in this awakening springtime, we give you thanks …

For the delight of sunny mornings, and tiny growing things,

For the sights and sounds of new life, and the busyness of house cleaning,

For the joy of being new again and the awe of celebrating grace,

For the privilege to be your follower and share your life and love with all we meet. Amen.

Early Springtime Prayer

“Let us then endure in hope. Let us devote ourselves,

side by side with our hoping, so that the God of the

entire universe, as he beholds our intention, may cleanse

us from all sins, fill us with high hopes from what we

have in hand, and grant us the change of heart that saves.

God has called you, and you have your calling.”

— St. Cyril of Jerusalem

If we are going to be followers of

Jesus, he tells us that each person must

“take up his cross, and follow me” (Mt

16:24). The Stations of the Cross is an

ancient meditation on Jesus’ journey

to the cross and eventually the tomb.

Usually offered on Fridays throughout

Lent, and especially on Good Friday,

participating in the Stations as a fam-

ily is way to acknowledge our own

crosses and is a reminder that Christ’s

suffering offers hope in the midst of

our daily struggles. Talk with your kids about the crosses they might be

carrying. Are they struggling with peer pressure? Do they speak before

they think? Did they make a mistake recently? Our crosses are bearable

because Jesus promises to help us carry them. After all, he reminds us,

“my yoke is easy, and my burden light” (Mt 11:30).

St. Patrick’s Day falls smack in the middle of Lent this year. It sticks out like a sore, green thumb in the middle of a sober liturgi-cal period. As a lifelong Catholic — and a lifelong Irishman — I struggle with squaring my prayer, repentance, almsgiving and self-denial with a holiday (one of my favorites) whose excesses include dying an entire river green. When I’m supposed to be fasting and giving things up and attending penance services, along comes this holiday — this feast day — that contradicts the whole Lenten vibe with its parades and corned beef.

It’s only been over the last few years that I’ve come to appreciate that Lent and St. Patty’s are complementary rather than conflicting. Originally, “Lent” meant “the lengthening of days” or, more literally, “spring.” And what says “spring” in a greener or more hopeful way than the feast of St. Patrick? As long, dark nights give way to warmer, longer, brighter days and the promise of a season of new life, I can’t think of a more fitting acknowledgment than the feast of the man who brought Christianity to Ireland.

We of Irish descent firmly believe that everyone is Irish on March 17. We can be a rowdy tribe, true, but we are not exclusive. It’s this all-are-welcome undercurrent to St. Patrick’s Day that makes me proud. It is reminiscent of the Catholic Church at its best. Jesus reminds us that — through his death and resurrection — we’re all forgiven. We all have a place in heaven. And, in the end, we’re all children of God, no matter our background nor the day of the year.

In the last few years, I’ve embraced the tension that exists between the austerity of Lent and the festivity of St. Patrick’s Day. It is a little like attending a wake for the dead in our Irish tradition. We find community and joy even in the darkest of times. My family dresses in our green to go to church. We await the oft-given dispensation that allows us to eat meat when the holiday lands on a Lenten Friday. We ask mercy for our sins, and then we celebrate madly when we receive it. (After all, what better occasion for celebration than when one receives the gift of for-giveness?)

Talk with your family about the shamrock. The three-leafed clover is a symbol of the Holy Trinity.

St. Patrick’s Day’s origin in the United States began with many “Irish Aid Societies,” charitable organizations that helped the poor. Give a dona-tion of time or money to a charity as part of your Lenten observance.

Try Irish step dancing. There’s no liturgical significance to this suggestion; it’s just fun and really hard to dance without moving your arms.

Glory, Praise and Honor:Palm Sunday CelebrationsBy Woodeene Koenig-Bricker

PRAYERS AND PROCESSIONSPalm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter, commemo-rates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem to celebrate Passover before his death as recounted in the Gospels:

“The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: ‘Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest’” (Mt 21:8).

By the fourth century, the Church in Jerusalem re-enact-ed this event with a celebration during which the people sang Hosanna and carried branches to various holy sites. In medieval times, the procession became quite elaborate, starting with a blessing outside the city walls and pro-ceeding to the main church of the city. A flower-festooned crucifix, a statue on wheels or the Blessed Sacrament often represented Jesus. When the crowds reached the gates of the city, a boys’ choir would sing the Gloria, Laus et Honor, which is still used in today’s liturgies.

FLOWERS AND FIGSAlthough palm branches are most common, no law speci-fies what kind of branches must be used. Olive branches are often used and, especially in colder regions, box, yew, spruce and willow branches are common. In parts of England and Poland, the feast is called Willow Sunday for that reason. In Germany, Spain and France, branches interwoven with flowers are tied to the top of long sticks, which has given rise to the name Flower Sunday. In other areas, the day is known as Fig Sunday since figs are eaten in remembrance of the fig tree that Jesus cursed as he approached Jerusalem.

In the United States, palm branches are blessed before Mass. Sometimes they are blessed outside the church so that a short, symbolic procession back into the sanctuary can take place before the start of Mass. Since the palms we receive are blessed and are sacramentals, they should always be disposed of reverently, either by burning or burial. In most churches, the leftover palms are burned and the ashes used for the next year’s Ash Wednesday celebration.

PALMS AT HOMEPlace palms in a place of honor in your home. Create a bouquet of palms and pussy willows to use as a centerpiece during Holy Week. Or weaving your palms into crosses and other designs is a traditional way to preserve them. The woven designs can be used as a bookmark in the family Bible, hung above doorways or placed behind a wall cross. Find instructions at: www.brothermichael.com/easter/palmcross.html.

Talk with your kids about Palm

Sunday. Jesus is honored in a special

way as he enters the city of Jerusalem

because people are beginning to see

that he is the Son of God. What are

some ways we honor Jesus at church

and in our daily lives?

March 4 — Second Sunday of LentMark 9:2-10: Today’s

reading from Mark

tells the story of

Peter, James and John

on a mountain with

Jesus when he was

transfigured (changed)

in a magnificent way. His clothes became dazzling white, the prophets

Moses and Elijah appeared, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my

beloved Son. Listen to him.”

The three apostles recognized Jesus easily on that mountain. Where do you find it easy to pray?

March 11 — Third Sunday of LentJohn 2:13-25: After driving the money-changers from the Temple area,

Jesus was asked for a sign. He told the people, “Destroy this temple and

in three days I will raise it up.” He was not talking about the Temple of

Jerusalem, but of his body. His disciples did not realize this until after he

was raised from the dead.

This Gospel says many came to believe in Jesus because of his signs. Are there signs of God’s love in your life?

March 18 — Fourth Sunday of LentJohn 3:14-21: Jesus is speaking with Nicodemus, who is wondering if Jesus

is truly the Messiah promised by God. Jesus tells Nicodemus that he will

bring the world the gift of eternal life, life with God forever. Jesus says

he is like a light for the world, a light that will help people see God’s love.

Jesus talks about the light coming into the world. What do you think is the light?

March 25 — Fifth Sunday of LentJohn 12:20-33: Think about what happens to seeds planted in the ground,

warmed by the sun and watered by the rain. In today’s Gospel Jesus tells

Philip and Andrew what will happen to him. Just like the seed that chang-

es into a beautiful flower, Jesus will overcome death, and so will we.

Are there steps you need to take to die to selfishness and come to new life? Is this the message of Lent/Easter?
