ΠMIXTAPE HIGHLIGHTS 26

notes FROM THE EDITOR:This magazine, as you probably guessed by the name, will be released everyday - Monday to Friday. Its pur-pose will be to relay to you the highlights of the days’ news in music and in film. We will endeavour to publish an issue every evening.

Normally this section would be a place for me, as an edi-tor, to say a few words about what’s inside. Since this is the very first issue, I’m going to let this be a dedication to my late father.

Over the years, I showed you the stuff that I’d had pub-lished, and you always seemed proud. My accomplish-ments were never something we spoke about because I never felt I had any to speak of. Well, I’m finally proud of something, and this is it. It just kills me that you aren’t here to see it, because this is for you, just as much as it is for me. Maybe one day on the other side, we’ll be able to look back and I’ll know that it was all worth it. I hope so, because there’s still so much I need to tell you.Cont

News: THE HARKES ARE DUE TO RELEASE THEIR DEBUT EP IN SEPTEMBERAngle favourites The Harkes are due to re-lease their debut EP Vol.1 at some point this month.

The EP, which we’ve been eagerly waiting for for a while now, will include Let It Go, Found A Way (you can view our lyric vid-eo for that by clicking the artwork to the left), the band’s single

Love Song (the video for which can be found in our Featured Music section) and Lean On Me.

Vol. 1 was recorded at CMP studios in Eastbourne.

NEWS: SHANNON OLIVIA LAWLESS RELEASES NEW SINGLE Shannon Olivia Lawless, an East-bourne-based song-writer that features in episode ten of the Balcony Sessions, has released her new sin-gle, 9/10.

According to Lawless the track, which is the second single from her upcoming album Second Spirit, is about “enjoying every second with people you love. Although times get hard and you may feel alone, you will always be able to find a place where you are loved and accepted” and is inspired by Alabama Shakes. The song was recorded by James Benson at a private studio in Eastbourne.

You can expect another single from Shannon towards the end of this year. Listen to the track by clicking the art above.

News: Red emperor to release new single and music videoSometime in September Brighton’s Red Emperor will be releasing their new single, Animals, and a video to go with it.

The quartet recently took a trip to Dubai to play Blended Festival, where they opened for the likes of Kasabian, Jessie Ware and Craig David. While away they decided to shoot a music video.

Frontman Charlie Herridge had this to say: “It’s a music video that documents our journey with a feel good factor about it. The song has a groovy disco funk vibe taking inspiration from the likes of HAIM and The red hot chili peppers. Our previous single from our debut EP (“Kink In Your Soul”) was heard by the event organiser in Dubai and he called us up and flew us out to perform. All expenses (were) paid and we were treated like Royalty whilst we were there. We had our own private dressing room/cabin right next door to Kasabian and we got meet and chill with them for a bit. We knew the journey would be incredible so we had it all filmed. Luckily we had recorded the new single “Animals” a week before the trip and got the masters back the day before we left so it made sense to shoot the music video too.”

The teaser for the video can be found above this article.

News: argonaut are recording a new albumLondon-based alternative rock band Argo-naut are currently recording their third album in, of all places, a church.

Of the album and its recording the band’s gui-tarist Nathan said: “We’re wanting to move towards a more organic, natural way of re-cording, capturing a moment and the sound of the space we’re using. We have invested in our own mobile studio and are recording in a local Church to get the right feel and sound.

The songs are more laid back in feel, more along the lines of Pavement, Stereolab, Sebadoh. We are leaning towards sixties and seventies style plug ins and equipment. More acoustic guitar, moog synths and maybe some cello.” The songs recorded so far are Spring and Weekending.

Not wanting to be content with just releasing an album, the band are also hoping to release three EPs next year, be-fore dropping the record on vinyl.

NEWS: BRIGHTR RELEASES VIDEO FOR YOU WISH YOU WERE HEREBrightr, aka songwriter Laurie Cottingham, has released the new video for You Wish You Were Here, the first track to be released from his recent split EP with Scottish five-piece Veto.

“It’s about feeling a little lost in despair, but then making your mood pretty awesome again...having a whole load of translation problems, before finding common ground.” The video was filmed and edited by Cottingham personally, more than fitting in with the DIY aesthetic that Brightr has been known for since its conception.

The video depicts Cottingham as a ghost doing ghostly things. It’s sweet and simple, comical and charismatic, match-ing well with the song’s message.“I hoped the video would turn out bittersweet and darkly heartwarming, but in hind-sight it’s just plain weird. Ghost Party fun times!”

You can check out Brightr’s split EP by clicking this sentence. Check out the video above.

NEWS: VEGA HAVE RELEASED THEIR DEBUT EP Worthing rockers Vega have released their debut EP CYBORG in hard-copy and as a digital download.

The EP “has several themes ranging from a deep rooted fear of being alone to all out ‘Grey VS Reptilian warfare” says the band. “The main theme that flows through the entire EP is the realisation of how de-tached from emotion we have become due to our cyber interactions. The focus is on stripping this ‘Cyborg state’ away and allowing the full range of emotions to be able to shine through.”

The band have also released a video for the record’s title track, which you can listen to on the left.

NEWS: H_NGM_N RELEASE VID-EO FOR BACK AT THE STARTBrighton duo H_ngm_n have released the new video for Back At The Start, a track likely to appear on their debut EP towards the end of this year.

“It’s basically about being scared of growing up too fast, which I think everyone can relate too. It’s like you get out of college or whatever, you get well into your 20s and you see a lot of people around you settling down and becoming a ‘real life grown-up’, and you can’t help but think ‘am I meant to be doing that?’ and before you know it, time’s up.” says Chris Childs. “The video reflects on that constant reminder that time doesn’t wait, and I guess the underlying message is that you should enjoy it while you can. Nobody wants to wake up at 50 and feel like they’ve wasted life.”

The video was filmed by a personal friend of the band, Jake Ratcliffe. Listen to it on the right.

NEWS: LAST VENDETTA RELEASE MUSIC VIDEO South Wales Punks Last Vendetta have released the new video for their track Waiting By The Water, which was released as a single on August 14th.

“Waiting By The Water is about the trials and tribulations of my life as a youth in my home town of South-ampton. It’s the most personal song lyrically to me as it describes the mistrust that surrounded me as a kid.” said frontman Danny Sahota of the video. “We wanted to get a dysfunctional visual setting and we were lucky enough to have access to a scrapyard. I think we probably shocked a few customers as the scrap yard was open as usual that day and we had up until closing to get everything finished. Just before we packed up the gear we went to find the owner to see if we could pay him to stay open a little later – the response was ‘no, you stuff needs to be out in 5mins or I’ll keep it’. Let’s just say we got the hell out of there”.

Album review: hambling-oh my god just shut up Hambling has always done his own thing. When you listen to his tracks, you hear concepts and new song structures that you haven’t heard before. This whole album, Every-one Else Dies, is a perfect example of that. It also showcases the diversity he has, when it comes to music. The first two tracks on here, Wonderdrugs On

Dragons and Kingfinch Hum, are both orchestral works. They are beautiful in every sense of the word. But the third track, Mystician, takes a sharp right turn. It contains twisted beats, still some string instruments, and a whole array of samples. It sounds like he has taken what he learned from other artists who inspired him, and threw it all into a melting pot, adding some of his own herbs as well. You just never quite know what you could get from him.

Every song on here is entertaining on the face of it, but if one were to dig a little deeper into each track, they would see just how much work has been put into each one. Each track has been meticulously crafted to always sound fresh and exciting. It’s also easy to tell that he puts so much emotion into his art. The track Perfect Person on this album is yet another example of how far Hambling can travel with his music. It utilizes a mix of synths, string-like sounds, vocal samples, and unique beats. It’s quite lovely, even though it is one of the shortest tracks on the album.

One of our favorites on Everyone Else Dies is called HYSM (Smile And Wait). This one is chocked full of vocal samples and various foley noises, as well as more of those stringed instruments Hambling loves to use. But this is also a track that shows a lot of tamped-down emotion. It sounds like this is something that he has been struggling to get out, but he doesn’t have someone to talk to, so he’s trying to communicate through this one song. There are tempo changes strewn about, with so many change-ups blended in, and it’s just something to behold in itself.

The next track, Pine After Someone Like A Tree, does an incredible job of painting a mental picture. We envision someone swinging back and forth on a playground swing, lonely, on a rainy day, thinking about something or perhaps someone that they’ve lost. It appears that Hambling loves to do things like this. He’s toying with sounds in special ways, to get as much emotion out of them as he can. But he never makes it sound cheesy. His sounds are always genuine, like he has somehow infused the feeling of pain itself into his tracks. We’re beginning to wonder who hurt him. Who would cause him to write such masterpieces as this?

Pine After Someone Like A Tree is only track #9 on this album, and there are still six more tracks after that. There’s nearly an hour of material on the whole album, all of which is gorgeous and heart-wrenching but ultimately magnificent. But there’s only so much we can fit into a review. He could make tracks that please even the picki-est of music connoisseurs. We highly recommend picking up Everyone Else Dies for yourself, and take in as much of it as you can. Hambling wants to tell you something, and this is his way of doing it.

NEWS: TESCO TO BECOME FIRST UK SUPERMARKET TO STOCK VINYLTesco are upping their hipster game and are going to start selling vinyl. The big vinyl revival is now hitting supermarkets with Iron Maiden’s new album The Book Of Souls to be sold in 55 Tesco Extra stores across the UK, as well as Trooper, the band’s signature beer.

“In the last year we began selling record decks in our largest stores and initial sales are very en-couraging so giving our customers some new vinyl to play on those decks seems like the logical next step,” Tesco music buyer, Michael Mulligan, said. “If this trial is a success then we would consider selling more vinyl albums before the end of the year.” Although this is a step forward to bringing vinyl back, it will put a strain on independent record stores. It will also take away the beauty of rifling through hundreds of vinyl to find that one particular album you’re looking for.

NEWS: COLD NIGHT FOR ALIGATORS STREAM VIDEOCold Night For Alligators have re-leased their new music video for Followers on Metal Hammer and it’s really rather disgusting.

The Danish prog metallers have tak-en influence from the likes of Sikth

and Meshuggah, and Followers is the first to include new vocalist Johan Pedersen. Guitarist Kristoffer Jessen has said, “Johan has a really diverse vocals and this track has some different parts to substantiate this.” The clean vocals beautifully contrast the brutality shown in the video and creates an overall great feel for the song.

Cast The First Stone is the 3rd track to be streamed, alongside the title track and When The Stillness Comes.A video for the title track Repentless is expected to be released soon. NEWS: Siouxsie sioux releases first song in eight yearsSiouxsie Sioux, best remembered for Siouxie and the Banshees, has re-leased her first song in 8 years for the TV show Hannibal.

Love Crime was co-written by Brian Reitzell and was created for the finale of the third and final season.

Bryan Fuller, the show's executive producer told TV Guide, "Brian Reitzell knew I am a huge Siouxsie Sioux fan and have seen her in concert more times than any other artist in my life. We knew that she was a fan of the show, and we reached out to see if she'd be interested in writing a song. Essentially, she hasn't had a single in eight years, and she said she hadn't been inspired to write in a long time, but that Hannibal had inspired her and she would write a new song.“

"Then it became the battle over... how do we pay for it? We didn't have any money left in the budget, and the studio wasn't going to put any more money into the show than they already had. I went to NBC and Sky, who are our American and UK broadcasters and said, 'I know the show is cancelled... and it's absolutely unheard of for a showrunner to come back to you and ask for more money for a show that has no further revenue poten-tial for you. But it's Siouxsie Sioux and it's an honor and it's her first single in eight years.' They both said, 'Yes, absolutely, we'll split it right down the middle, and we're doing this because we love you, we love the show, and we love Siouxsie.'"

NEWS: WHITE HOUSE RESPONDS TO KANYE WEST'S PLANS TO RUN FOR PRESIDENTKanye has recently announced that he’s going to run in the 2020 US Presidential bid and the White House has respond-ed.

He made this announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards whilst accepting an award for lifetime achievement. He said: “It’s not about me. It’s about ideas. New ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth. And yes, as you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

Responding to West’s statement of intent, Press Secretary for the White House Josh Earnest told Billboard that he looks “forward to seeing what slogan he chooses to embroider on his campaign hat”.

Although most haven’t taken his claim seriously, it does pose the question of who would make a better president: Kanye West or Donald Trump?

album review: miley cyrus-MILEY CYRUS AND HER DED PETZ Kanya West wasn’t the only one mak-ing announcements at the MTV Music Video Awards. Mi-ley Cyrus revealed that she’s made a free 23-track album

that has been released on SoundCloud, which is something that EVERYONE has been waiting for…

This is a side project for Miley where her record label couldn’t get involved so she had complete “artistic” licence. It also detracts from the commercial stuff everyone’s used to.

The title of the album, Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz, can probably give you and inkling that this isn’t going to be a mundane pop album.

Famous for pushing boundaries and shocking the public, Cyrus shows more of the same in this project. It’s surprisingly not awful. Yes, it is bizarre but you start to forget that you’re listening to the ‘queen of scandal’.

Obviously, the songs are about sex, drugs and anything else she might think is mildly controversial and make her seem like a ‘badass’. Although the first few songs are quite melodic and easy to listen to, things take a strange turn and by the last song, it leaves you questioning what drugs she is taking and why? Her songs reflect her as a person – weird and a bit try hard but you can’t help but secretly like it, even if it pains you to admit it.

The album only cost $50,000, which is a fraction of what was spent making her last album Bangerz and her record label wasn’t involved at all. Cyrus said to the Times “I literally can do whatever I want. It’s insane.” Her freedom of course, was within the limits of it not being associated with the record label in anyway shape or form, or so they lead us to believe. If Miley had always produced music like this, it wouldn’t be such a shock and she’d be respected more for what she does but due to the con-trast, it’s hard to tell whether this is what she wanted to produce or just an elaborate publicity stunt. The album has a psychedelic, hip-hop feel and isn’t too dissimilar to that of the Flaming Lips which isn’t surprising; front man Wayne Coyne collaborated on it. If you want to listen to an album that makes you feel a sense of self-loathing and shame for actually enjoying it, this is the album for you.

NEWS: TRAILER RELEASED FOR MACBETHA dark and bloody new trailer for Macbeth has been re-leased, starring Michael Fassbender as the leading man, and Marion Cotillard as his crazy queen.

Shakespeare has been reimagined in this new adaptation of the play. It definitely has a Hollywood spin and director Justin Kurzel has given it a dark and dusky feel, creating a smoky atmosphere. The dirty violence and blood-fuelled battles shown in the new trailer are intense and captivat-ing. Fassbender and Cotillard look promising this for this award season. Macbeth will be released in the UK on the

2nd of October this year.

NEWS: KEANU REEVES STARS IN NEW TRAILER FOR KNOCK KNOCKKeanu Reeves stars in new home invasion horror Knock Knock and the new trailer shows that things aren’t always what they seem.

Letting in two girls, soaking wet from the rain and in need of help may seem like a perfect scenario, but they seem to have a more sinister agenda than just making a simple phone call.

The family man is left compromised and in danger after an infidelity turns into fearing for his life. Director Eli Roth has managed to combine a special blend of sex and violence turning Reeves’ characters fantasy crashing speedily into a nightmare in this erotic horror. Knock Knock was shown at Sundance Film Festival in January but is set to release in the US on the 10th of October. Watch the trailer be clicking above.

news: chloe grace moretz stars in trailer for the 5th wavePost-apocalyptic films are a trend that won’t go away anytime soon, and with new film The 5th Wave set to release in 2016, it seems there will be a replacement to fill the void that the Hunger Games will leave us with at the end of this year. Chloe Grace Moretz stars in this film as the 16 year old heroine Cassie who is trying to simultaneously save the world from ‘The Others’ and find her long lost brother. The Others are aliens that are trying to wipe out humankind with 5 different waves. Once the 5th wave happens, yes you guessed it: the humans will be destroyed. Although it is months until it is released, this film adaptation of Rick Yancey’s novel could start a whole new franchise, as this is only book 1 of a trilogy.

The 5th Wave is set to release on the 22nd of January next year and is directed by J. Blakeson. Watch the trailer by clicking the image above.

news: trailer released for concussionThe first trailer for Peter Landesman’s film Concussion has been released showing Will Smith challenging the NFL with this telling of Dr. Bennet Omalu, the neuropathologist that discovered CTE, a degenerative disease of the brain caused by multiple hits to the head. The NFL didn’t appreciate Omalu’s work and tried tried to stop him revealing the truth about the safety of American football. It isn’t easy to go against “an organisation that owns a day of the week” but this doesn’t stop the Nigerian-born doctor. It looks to be a story of right vs might, and Will Smith getting to showcase yet more of his talents. This touching story is to be re-leased on the 29th of January 2016 in the UK, just in time for awards season. Watch it by clicking the image above.

SLOW MOTIONSICKNESS- TO BECOMPLETELYTo Be Completely puts the funk firmly in funky, with mellow and rhyth-mic guitars that calm you to the bone, while raw and intense vocals from Peter Plunkett create real soul-borne passion.

It starts off sounding like a typical pop-punk song, but a syncopated beat is thrown in to keep listeners on their toes. And from there it just gets more interesting – a synthesizer utilised to create a UFO-esque sounding backdrop, a little soliloquy with a violin playing to add some dramatic effect, followed by what can best be described as the opening sequence to a espionage movie, before ending with a hard hitting, screamed out verse.

Seizure fuses together a deep bass line, gritty guitars and energetic drumming with ele-ments of hip hop to pro-duce a raw sound. With influences from Rage Against The Machine and Alice In Chains quite evident, Southpaw have formed a sound that is guaranteed to impress.
