A total of 119 completed responses, from 89 Singaporeans(67%, 22% less than last year) and 30 Japanese, were used in the analysis. The response rate was 45.6%.
The following is the findings from WASS 2013 Feedback Questionnaire:
1. Nearly all of the respondents reported either “excellent” or “good” on not Q1(Do you think it is beneficial to advance steel structure?) but Q6(How do you rate this seminar overall?) even though compared to last year more respondents chose “good” rather than “excellent” this year.
2. Almost 40% of Singaporeans, 12% more than last year, replied “achievement of productivity” as the first advantage in Q2(What is the largest benefit of advancing steel structure?). The second highest first advantage was “shortening of work period”, the same score as last year.Focusing “productivity” this year, two out three Singaporeans supported “achievement of productivity” or “shortening of work period” as the first advantage.
2. Report on the Findings from WASS 2013Feedback Questionnaire (Summary)

3. On Q3(What is the issue to be addressed in advancing steel structure?) Singaporeans recognized “material and fabrication cost” is at most important issue in the use of steel structure in Singapore. Its rate was 28%, 3% more than last year.“Construction technology”, “design knowledge” and “Singapore government’s policy” were the next important issues. 16% of Singaporeans, 6% more than year, stressed there needs to be more support with “Singapore government’s policy”
4. Singaporeans’ biggest concern was how to utilize “advanced technology” from Japan in Q4(For buildings, what do you expect from Japanese firms?). “Safety and reliability” was the next concern, followed by “productivity” and so on.This trend of their concern was almost same as last year even though the professions, which respondents belong to, was totally different from last year. It means Singaporeans have high expectations from these Japanese technologies but they see high potential in them.

5. On Q7(Who had the most impressive presentation in this seminar?) the most popular presentation was the keynote speech on advantage of steel structural over reinforced concrete structure under Eurocode in a point of view of shortening construction term and its impact to construction cost. The second most popular presentation was the keynote lecture on advanced technology on steel structural for Life Cycle Productivity, stressing needs of comprehensive approach from schematic design to demolition. Half of the Singaporean respondents selected one of these as their favourite.
6. This year, we hosted the second WASS Seminar in conjunction with the “Singapore Construction Productivity Week” held by BCA at The Singapore Expo from 29 July to 2 August 2013. Analysed findings of WASS 2013 Feedback Questionnaire indicates we surely have achieved our initial goal in increasing the number of Singaporeans to understand steel structure as one key option to improve productivity and to shorten construction term.
