PREFACE

The event of supreme importance in the year 5679 was the con-clusion of the greatest war in history and the drafting of thetreaties, which, among other things, dealt with territorial, eco-nomic, and political problems arising out of the war. In the twotreaties which have already been published, namely, those withGermany and Poland, there are clauses which intimately concernour brethren; similar clauses will be included in the treaties withnew states and those whose territories are being enlarged, inwhich these states will undertake the same solemn obligationsfor the protection of racial, linguistic, and religious minoritiesas have been assumed by the new State of Poland. This is one ofthe most important events in modern history, but inasmuch asnot all the treaties in question have yet been published, it wasnot possible to have this subject dealt with in a special article. For the present the most that can be done is to give in a specialsection such excerpts from documents emanating from the PeaceConference as are of interest to Jews.

A few months after the close of the year 5678, the war came toend. It was therefore considered not only fitting but also urgentto record, while the recollection was still vivid, the salient factsrespecting the participation of the Jews of various countries inthe struggle. A series of articles was»projected which, for obviousreasons, was confined to the United States and the countriesassociated with it in the war; but practical difficulties have ren-dered it possible to present in this volume only articles on theparticipation of the Jews of Great Britain and of France. Theformer article was contributed by the Rev. Michael Adler, seniorJewish chaplain in the British forces; the latter was prepared, ina very short time and under great pressure, by Captain SylvainHalff, of Paris, who exhibits an intimate knowledge of the facts. These articles contain information of intense interest not aloneto Jews, but, in general, to all persons who desire to have someconception of the great heroism and sacrifice of the Jews of these

VI PREFACE

countries. As respects the Jews of our own country, the office ofWar Records of the American Jewish Committee, with the gener-ous co-operation of the Jewish Welfare Board, is engaged in thepreparation of a comprehensive record which, in itself, will requireseveral volumes. Accordingly, owing to the magnitude of thetask, only a brief summary of the work of that office by its director,Mr. Julian Leavitt, is published in this issue. There is also atimely article by Mr. Joshua H. Neumann on the organization ofthe Jewish battalions in connection with the British campaign inthe Holy Land.

Besides these articles, this volume contains a new Directory ofLocal Jewish Organizations in the United States, which supersedesthe Directory published in THE AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK 5668.This Directory is based almost entirely upon replies to question-naires sent to every organization of which there was any recordin the office of the American Jewish Committee. In the preparationof this important list, I had the able, untiring, and conscientiousassistance of Miss Ada Aneckstein. A large number of personsthroughout the country, most of whom are connected with variousJewish organizations, were helpful in supplying important data. The list of these is too long to be given here, and acknowledgmentof the debt I owe them is made in the introduction to the Directory.

In compiling the List of Events in 5679, I had to cope with thesame difficulties as confronted the editors of the past few issues. With respect to most eastern European countries original infor-mation was not available, and fragmentary and often dubiousreports which reached the pr*ess of England, France, and Americahad to be used as a basis of selection. The dates given are, in mostcases, only approximate, and there is every reason to believe thatmany significant happenings may not have been reported.

In connection with some of the permanent features of the YEAKBOOK several changes in arrangement have been made. The intro-ductions to the List of Events, Directories of National and LocalOrganizations, Statistics, and the List of Jewish Periodicals willlead to a clearer interpretation of the facts presented. In the com-pilation of the chronology and in the preparation of ma,ny of theother permanent features of the YEAR BOOK, I had the benefit of thegreat experience of Miss Rose A. Herzog. The list of those who

have rendered great help will not be complete without the nameof Mr. I. George Dobsevage, the secretary of the Jewish Publica-tion Society, who gave many practical suggestions and assistedmaterially in the preparation of the Directory of LocalOrganizations.

Only the full appreciation of the value of the training andexperience which I had received while assisting in the preparationof THE AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK for the past ten years, andthe, firm belief that I could call for encouragement and help upona number of persons of expert knowledge and ability, imbued mewith sufficient confidence to accept the responsibility of the editor-ship of the twenty-first volume of this publication. This relianceon the co-operation of others has been fully justified, and I wishto acknowledge gratefully the kind help of Doctor Cyrus Adler, who, in the midst of his absorbing activities at Paris as a repre-sentative of the American Jewish Committee, was always readyto give his valuable assistance and counsel and was good enoughto secure some of the special articles; and to Doctor B. Halper, the editor of the Jewish Publication Society, upon whose wideknowledge and sound critical sense I could always rely for helpfulcollaboration.

JEWISH CALENDAR FOR ONE HUNDRED YEARS ,

5585 (1824)-5684 (1924)

The Jewish year consists of 12 months, each month having29 or 30 days. An intercalated year has 13 months, an ad-ditional month, called Adar Sheni (second Adar), being addedbetween Adar and Nisan. Nisan, Sivan, Ab, Tishri, Shebat, and the first Adar (in an intercalated year) always have 30days; Iyar, Tammuz, Elul, Tebet, Adar (in a simple year, orAdar Sheni in an intercalated year) always have 29 days each.Heshvan and Kislev sometimes-both have 30 days, when theyear is called "perfect" (Shelemah, indicated by letter B>),sometimes both have 29 days each, when the year is called" defective" {Haserah, indicated by letter n), and sometimesHeshvan has 29 days and Kislev 30 days, when the year iscalled "regular" (Kesidrah, indicated by the letter D ) .Whenever the month has 30 days,-the 30th day of the monthis the first New Moon day of the following month, which hastwo New Moon days. When the month has only 29 days, thefollowing month has only one New Moon day. In order tosimplify the following tables, only one New Moon day is indi-cated, the one which is the first of the month. - Thus when thereare two New Moon days, the second alone is given.

The Hebrew letters at the top of each column indicate thesign of- the year. The first letter indicates the day of the weekwhen the first day of New Year is celebrated; the second letterindicates whether the year is " perfect/' " defective," or " regu-lar" ; and the third letter indicates the day of the week onwhich the first day of Passover is celebrated.
