Dear Parishioners and Friends of the Cathedral, Joseph de Veuser was born to a family of farmers in the Belgian town of Tremlo in AD 1840. He was able to attend school as a child, but was forced to quit school at the age of 13 in order to work full time on the family farm. All throughout his youth, Joseph felt a strong call to become a missionary, and at the age of 19, he entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, taking the religious name by which the Church knows him today – Damien (after a fourth century physician and martyr). As Damien took his final vows as a member of his religious congregation, part of the ritual involved placing over him a burial pall, the cloth that would be used to cover his coffin. It symbolized the grave commitment of the religious, and his identification with Our Lord’s own death for the sake of the salvation of others. Damien’s own brother, Pamphile, was also a member of the same congregation, and it was him who was originally chosen to travel to Hawaii as a missionary. But when he fell ill, Damien, who was not yet even a priest, volunteered to take his place. In AD 1864, Damien arrived on the island of Honolulu, and it was there that he was ordained a priest, and then set about the work evangelization on the Island of Hawaii, where his superiors assigned him to work. When an epidemic of leprosy broke out, it moved the Hawaiian government to adopt of policy of segregation, and they established a leper colony on the island of Molokai in AD 1868. It was described by some as a “living graveyard,” a place of natural beauty, but human horror. The people condemned to live there suffered terribly, and were plunged into the depths of despair, often lacking even the basic necessities of life. The Bishop in Hawaii called for volunteers from among the clergy to minister to the needs of the lepers. Four priests, each agreeing to serve on the island for three months at a time, would look after the pastoral care of these all but forgotten people. After laboring for nine years on the island of Hawaii, in AD 1873, despite some trepidation about contracting the horrible disease, Damien volunteered to serve as a chaplain on the island of Molokai. While other missionaries kept the lepers at arm’s length, Damien realized that he would need to be willing to overcome his fears and immerse himself in their lives, if he was to authentically convey the love of God to them. So he asked his superiors if he could remain permanently, and was given permission. He began to share completely in their lives, ministering to their physical and spiritual needs. Damien fed the hungry, built houses, a church, and a clinic, established an orphanage, and built some 600 coffins with his own hands. Perhaps most importantly he preached the Gospel to them, bringing them hope, giving meaning to their suffering, and helping them to see their dignity as children of God. In AD 1885, Damien announced to the lepers whom he had loved so dearly for 13 years that he too had contracted the disease. He continued to labor in service to them as long as his strength allowed, dying during Holy Week, AD 1889. Saint Damien of Molokai was beatified in AD 1995 and canonized in AD 2009. When Hawaii became a state in 1959, it selected Damien as one of its two representatives in the Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol. Saint Damien spent 16 years in that “living graveyard,” dying at the age of 49, because he loved the people suffering from that terrible disease, as Christ has called us to love one another. His faith bore him up as he took our Lord’s words to heart: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40).

Permanent Diaconate Ordination Please pray for the men, ordained to the Permanent Diaconate by Bishop Nelson J. Perez on Saturday, May 4th: Christopher John DePenti (St. Columbkille), Giovanni Enrico Grazia (Divine Word), Matthew William Harley, Sr. (St. Ambrose), and Thomas Anthony Shetina (St. John Vianney). May God bless them abundantly as they undertake their ministry of service to the Church.

who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. Jn 3:16Easter III 5 May 2019

Holy Hour of Reparation - We may wonder what we can do to help establish justice, bring healing, and purge corruption from the Church. One thing that we can do, is to pray for the Church, and all those affected. To that end, on the first Monday of each month, the Cathedral has a Holy Hour of Reparation and Healing following the 5:10 pm Mass, from approximately 5:45-6:45 pm on May 6th. It will provide an opportunity for prayer before the

Blessed Sacrament and conclude with prayers of reparation.

The Office of Catechetical Services Collection - Next weekend is the annual Diocesan collection for the Office of Catechetical Services, taken up in all the parishes to support their many ministries. This Office focuses on supporting and enhancing catechetical initiatives (PSR programs) throughout the Diocese and supports faith formation for all, including adult faith formation, catechetical leader training and catechist formation for teachers of religion, media literacy, and the Newman Campus Ministry program. Please be generous to this Ministry that touches so many lives in the Diocese of Cleveland.

Posture at Communion - Beginning on Divine Mercy Sunday, we have made a slight change to our Communion Rite posture to reflect the original policy, first established in 2003. We remain standing after the Lamb of God, throughout the distribution and reception of Holy Communion and the singing of the Communion Hymn, until the end of the distribution of Holy Communion. Once the last person has received Holy Communion and the Communion Hymn ends, we may kneel or sit for private prayer.

Baptismal Preparation Classes - It is required that all first-time parents attend a Baptismal Preparation class prior to the Baptism of their first child. While parents are welcome to attend a class anywhere in the Diocese, the Cathedral will offer the class on July 27 at 3:00 pm. To register for the class call 216-771-6666.

NFP Training Sessions - Education about Natural Family Planning is now standard part of Marriage Preparation at the Cathedral. Training sessions will usually take place in the Lower Sacristy every other month. The next dates are Mondays, May 20, July 15, September 16 & November 18, 2019, at 7:00 pm. Although reservations are not required, please let the rectory know if you plan to attend at 216-771-6666 or <stjohncathedral.com>.

Cleveland Food Bank - Throughout Northeast Ohio, one in six people is food insecure – meaning they may not know from where their next meal will come. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank seeks to bridge the meal gap, connecting individuals with the nutritious meals they need to succeed. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is the largest hunger relief organization in Northeast Ohio, having provided, in 2018, more than 57 million meals to hungry people in Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Ashland, and Richland counties. If you need help to get or retain your benefits, find a pantry that serves your area, or to see if you meet the guidelines for assistance, call the Food Bank at call 216-738-7239, or visit <GreaterClevelandFoodBank.org>.

Serving the Poor in Our MidstEach day, numerous people come to the rectory office seeking assistance. Through your generosity, and with the assistance of the workers at the Bp. Cosgrove Center, we are able to fill some of their needs. Listed below is a report on the assistance the Cathedral has offered this past month, and on your generosity in support of these efforts.

A Community of Justice & LoveCosgrove Donations - You may wonder what happens with the weekly Cosgrove Center donations that get posted in the bulletin. A couple times a year, when the fund has grown, we give a check to the Cosgrove Center to use for whatever they

most need. Just before Holy Week we had the happy experience of handing over an unexpectedly large check in the amount of $15,000 to Eric Milkie, Cosgrove Director, and Terrel Valentine, Program Coordinator. THANK YOU for your generosity! We chatted about their needs and programs. This donation covered most of the items on their “wish list” as well as helping fund the hot meals program. This week, we received Thank You notes from Eric, with messages from the Cosgrove Staff: “Your support in our mission is a huge help to us and we appreciate you more than you know…” Further thanks came with a second note:

St. John’s Parish & Easter Volunteers,Thank you so much for partnering with us to sponsor & host such a nice meal for the guests of Cosgrove! Thank you for your generosity to cover the cost of the meal as well as providing such a great group of volunteers to make it all run so smoothly! On behalf of Cosgrove & our Guests, Thank you! Thank you, Erick Milkie & the Cosgrove Staff”

Summer Camp Counselors Wanted - Catholic Charities is seeking energetic, mission-driven individuals to join our summer camp staff as Camp Counselors. These are temporary positions are at four of our summer camps that will last for up to 12 weeks during the summer from the first week in June to the first to second week in August. Positions are available at Camp Christopher, Bath Township; Camp Happiness, Wickliffe and Parma; Fatima Family Center, Cleveland; and St. Martin de Porres Family Center, Cleveland. Please see the postings on the Catholic Charities careers page: <ccdocle.org/careers> for more information.

Give Where It Helps - If anyone asks you for money outside the Cathedral, please refer them to the Street Cards available in the East 9th Street vestibule bookrack. This handy sheet lists meal sites, shelters for men and women, ways to get free legal counsel, low income housing, places to get free clothing and medical care, and a wide variety of services to help people with most any need. Please do not give them cash. A gift of cash would do more good if given to Catholic Charities, or other social service agencies who provide long term solutions to the problems of homelessness. In all circumstances, let us look kindly on those who are truly poor, as well as those who feel they need to ask for help, whatever the reason. Look them in the eyes with faith and love, smile, and offer a prayer. In justice, continue to press to eliminate the reasons we have the poor around us: low wages, expensive housing, and poor education.

Tune: CHRIST IST ERSTANDEN or SURGIT IN HAEC DIES6

The Gospel according to John 21:1-19People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I will extoll you, Lord, for you have rescued me and have not let my enemies rejoice over me. O Lord, you have lifted up my soul from the grave, restored me to life from those who sink into the pit.Sing psalms to the Lord, you faithful ones; give thanks to his holy name. His anger lasts a moment; his favor all through life. At night come tears, but dawn brings joy.Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me; be my helper, O Lord. You have changed my mourning into dancing. O Lord my God, I will thank you forever.

In the breaking of the bread, may we know the Lord. We were lost, and now are found; home again with God.

You are food for all our hunger; you are all we need. You are our promise and our hope; life for the world.

As grain, once scattered on the hill, was gathered all as one. May we be one in this bread: Behold the Lamb of God.

As this bread is broken, as this cup is shared, we give our lives, broken and outpoured. We will serve the Lord.

Choir: That Easter Day with Joy J. M. Neale / Burton Bumgarner1. That Easter day with joy was bright, the sun shone out with fairer light; When to their longing eyes restored, the apostles saw their risen Lord.2. His risen flesh with radiance glowed; His wounded hands and feet he showed; Those scars their solemn witness gave that Christ was risen from the grave.3. O Jesus, King of gentleness, who with your grace our hearts possess That we may give you all our days the willing tribute of our praise.4. O Lord of all, with us abide in this our joyful Eastertide; From ev'ry weapon death can wield your own redeemed for ever shield.5. All praise to you, O risen Lord, now both by heaven and earth adored; To God the Father equal praise, and Spirit blest, our songs we raise.

Morning Prayer Groups - Please consider joining our weekly gatherings from 6:30-7:00 am in the Lower Sacristy of the Cathedral. Using the scriptures for the coming Sunday, these groups share their faith and some fellowship over a cup of coffee. The women’s group gathers on Tuesdays, and the men’s group on Fridays. Just show up at the Lower Sacristy, or contact the parish office with inquiries.

Centering Prayer is a spiritual practice of our Catholic contemplative tradition that opens us more deeply to a relationship with God in faith and intimacy. Our group meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Lower Sacristy.

How can I become more involved? - There are many ways for Catholics to get more involved in their faith and in the ministry of the Church. Those include liturgical ministries (such as choir member, reader, altar server, usher or Eucharistic minister at Mass), various parish ministries (such as social justice, RCIA, new member, and community life), as well as volunteer roles as holiday church decoration, counters, office support, etc. Please speak with a parish staff member to discern your gifts, your time, and your opportunities to serve.

Family Perspectives - Jesus invited the disciples to “come and have breakfast.” Through this breakfast at the beach and the Last Supper, Jesus teaches us that meals can be more than eating. Meals are opportunities to share prayer, the stories of our lives, understanding and forgiveness for one another. Expect Jesus to be present at family meals.

Save the Date: Catholic Renewal Ministries 37th Annual Conference: Arise and be Healed will be held July 12/13 at Magnificat High School in Rocky River. Bishop Martin Amos will celebrate Mass during the Conference. More information, schedule, and registration are available online: < crmweb.org>.
