A Message from the President….. October is that time, again. The collection of dues
starts and AMA renewals are here. Nominations for
club officers will be this month. Be ready with candi-
dates at the October meeting. Nominations will be
held in October and November with elections at the
November meeting.
Our annual Holiday Party will be held at The
Ramada Plaza in Holtsville. Details are in the Newslet-
ter. The cost will be $25.00 per person and for spouse
or significant other. We were able to negotiate a better
price as to, hopefully, attract more members. This
year’s cost to members is almost half of last years. To
sweeten the deal, the Hotel donated 2 prizes for the
Raffle. A night’s stay for 2, and a Dinner for 2 at the
Yogi’s Sports Bar. We will have our usual Door Prize
Raffle and a Radio Raffle. The date will be Sunday,
December 16, 2012 from 2pm to 5pm. The money will
be collected at the meetings or can be mailed to Nick
Miceli.

LIARS “Show and Tell” General Meeting

Model: DHC-2 Beaver E-Flite: ARF Platinum Series Wingspan: 68" Length: 48" Wing Area: 565 Sq in Motor: E-flite 36 outrunner Esc: E-flite 60 amp Battery: Thunder power 3300mah 4 cell Receiver: Spectrum AR 5210 Servos: Spectrum MN 48 mini servos (6) Prop: 13x6.5e First flight by Dennis Reingold at Club field. Flew great with more than enough power due to Don’s selection of motor which was slightly more than called for by E-flite. Model looks great in the air and on the ground, Colors match that of full size aircraft to give it realistic in the air appearance. Look for it down at the field with Don Ferguson at the controls.
Look what happens when you leave your model out
in rain…
This 60” Wing Span. Cub was left on a Start-Up
Bench that had been built of non-outdoor lumber and
when examined the following morning it was found in
this condition.
Don then showed it off at the club meeting as a study
in miniaturization .(Not)
Actually it is a very fine example of what Don can do
when he is not under any stress. Don had this little
wonder at the Club Picnic and it caused quite a stir
when he placed it on display. Nice work, Don.!
During a private “Fly Fishing” excursion into the Alaskan wilderness, the chartered pilot and fishermen left a cooler with bait in the plane, and a bear smelled it. This is what it did to the plane...
The pilot used his radio and had another pilot bring him two new tires, three cases of duct tape, and a supply of sheet plastic.
He then duct taped the plane together, and
FLEW IT HOME .
The moral of this story: Don’t leave home without your Duct Tape..

OK! You've probably seen the video of the space shuttle piggybacked on the 747 for it's FL to CA retirement flight.
Here's how they attached it to the 747 in the first place. (Note: look on page 3 for access to video)

Go Fly a Kite or Three Romancing The Wind by Ray Bethell
http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=nr9KrqN_lIg Absolutely beautiful performance and the finale gave me goose bumps.
Win Perkins, a real estate appraiser who specializes in airport properties, has posted on his Website, a video he created of Charles Lindbergh's famous and risky takeoff in the "Spirit of St. Louis" (May 20, 1927). According to Perkins, this is unlike any other presentation of the takeoff footage. Perkins said he "painstakingly assembled news footage from five cameras that filmed Lindbergh's takeoff from Roosevelt Field, Long Island "and "mixed it with enhanced audio from the same newsreel sources." This is one of the most interesting videos I've seen come over the Internet.
Click on "CONTACT" to the left and select #1, then watch them in order, #1 through #4
(each time going back to "contact" and selecting the next one).
I was glued to the screen through all 4.
What guts it took for Lindbergh to overcome the odds against him, and accomplish this amazing feat!

Model Aviation, affectionately, known as the “Hobby”, what is it? I intend to dissect it with my trusty Exacto knife. Is it a hobby or a sport and does it matter? The only way we can answer that question is to compare it. Let's take baseball. Do they have meetings where someone brings in a bat, for show and tell, to explain how they carved it from a blank of huck-a-buck and finished it with zag oil? I don't think so. Take tennis. Has anyone taken pride in making his own racket and used it in competition? Not to my knowledge. Speaking about competition, do we have it? You bet, and in every phase of the hobby/sport. Within club activities, and on an international level, there is always some sort of competition. One such publicized event is called “Top Gun” which incorporates both building and flying proficiencies. There is a beauty to our endeav-or and that is when comparing it to other sports, physical strength is not a factor, dexterity and coordination are. Unlike other sports that evolved from gladiators, we had our start from Leonar-do Di Vinci. Now, let us analyze the ultimate achievement in comparing our sport with the estab-lished ones. Basically, in other sports, the object is to beat the other team, or player, by either hitting more balls or getting to either side of a field more often than the other team in a given amount of time. If the competition is one on one, it is who can inflict more damage to the oppo-nent or rack up a greater score in one way or another. Very simple stuff. No wonder these sports have such a vast following. In comparison, what does it take to be competitive in our hobby? As in other sports, only the best compete. In that respect, our hobby is much like golf. There are qualifying events to narrow down the competition. However, it is not just getting a lit-tle ball to go into a cup. Our talented guys are scrutinized for their ability and accuracy in build-ing and flying by the most critical judges on this planet. Now, comparing the average flier/modeler to another established sport, there are similarities. If you are a dad, you can play catch as in baseball or football. If you are in the hobby, you can teach your kid to build and fly models. Either way, you get out to enjoy good weather and bond with your youngster. If you are a single guy, the hobby is a great way to be with others that have a common interest. “More mature”, older guys like me, we just like to hang out, fly a little and B.S. Those that have the desire can challenge themselves to be as good, if not better flier and builder than the next guy. So what is it that we entertain ourselves with? Are we in a hobby or a sport? I think, perhaps, a little of both. What matters is I am left with a feeling that ours affords us a far greater reward than all other recreational activities. We exercise mentally, use eye and hand control, and, for me, just bending down to pick up my plane is physical. Getting outdoors and away from troubling thoughts is therapeutic. All sounds good ….just stay away from those spinning props.

The Club Picnic was a complete success due to the break in the weather. Though overcast at times, It had mild tem-peratures and even a few moments of sun. As usual the food was good and the company great.
