Jesus during the last supper makes a promise. He promises that he will not leave us orphans, that he will send the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, the Paraclete to protect, guide, and inspire us. The promise is kept in a dramatic fashion. It comes over the Apostolic College and the Virgin Mary in a colorful description of a spectacular beginning. The Holy Spirit, like a wild roaring fire descends upon all of them and breathed with light, thunder, and fires the spring of a genesis in a missionary community. The room is a blaze and so are they for the kingdom of God. And the impact was radical, dramatic! Inspired by the Holy Spirit they go boldly to the world and preach. They are no longer a collection of individuals terrified, paralyzed, and victims of their own insecurities and the whims of the society where they are living. They emerged alive and confident to lead the world into the new creation inspired by the risen Christ. They have discovered their vocation, their call to love, to create community, and to be messengers. In such they start preaching the good news, the gospel. We see in the first reading how we’re able to preach in different languages; Hebrew and several of its dialects, Latin, Greek, Arabic, Egyptian, and so forth. But the amazing thing is not that they were able to speak in several languages after an encounter with the Holy Spirit. For God everything is possible! The point is that everybody understood what the kingdom of God was about. Finally the crowd can get it. Finally they realized that when God insisted on the inclusivity of the heavenly kingdom He meant it. And when you can get it you have no choice, either you accept it or not. They accept it and they believed! We are the result of the testimony and belief of those first men and women who “took a chance on Jesus”. The gift of the Holy Spirit, given at Pentecost, provided us of a foundation to go out into the world. But there must be a response through our human actions, deeds, and acts. If we are to live our lives in accordance to the Holy Spirit, in light of the divine order in our lives, we must do so inspired to always do what is right, and what is just. It is in the ordinary where the Holy Spirit acquires a tangible meaning. You have the Holy Spirit when you forgive that grave offense that has hurt you ever so deeply or when you participate actively in acts for peace and justice. You have the Holy Spirit when you look for wisdom in light of a life changing decision or when your health is threatened by a terminal decease and you know is not the end. You have the Holy Spirit when everybody has abandoned you and you still do not feel alone because God is with you and you know it. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to form us in the same way and fashion He formed Christ in the ever so luminous womb of the Virgin Mary and I invite all to repeat after me “Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.”
Jesús durante la última cena hace una promesa. Promete que no nos dejará huérfanos, que enviará al Espíritu Santo, el Defensor, el Paráclito para protegernos, guiarnos e inspirarnos. La promesa se mantiene de manera dramática. Llega al Colegio Apostólico y la Virgen María en una descripción colorida de un comienzo espectacular. El Espíritu Santo, como un fuego salvaje y rugiente, desciende sobre todos ellos y sopla con luz, trueno y enciende el manantial de una génesis en una comunidad misionera. La habitación es una llamarada al igual que ellos para el Reino de Dios. ¡Y el impacto fue radical, dramático! Inspirados por el Espíritu Santo, van con valentía al mundo y predican. Ya no son un conjunto de individuos aterrorizados, paralizados y víctimas de sus propias inseguridades y de los caprichos de la sociedad en la que viven. Surgieron vivos y confiados para guiar al mundo hacia la nueva creación inspirada por Cristo resucitado. Han descubierto su vocación, su llamado a amar, a crear comunidad y a ser mensajeros. De esa manera comienzan a predicar la Buena Nueva, el
evangelio. Vemos en la primera lectura cómo podemos predicar en diferentes idiomas; hebreo y varios de sus dialectos, latín, griego, árabe, egipcio, etc. Pero lo asombroso no es que hayan podido hablar
en varios idiomas después de un encuentro con el Espíritu Santo. ¡Para Dios todo es posible! El punto es que todos entendieron de qué se trataba el reino de Dios. Finalmente, la multitud puede conseguirlo. Finalmente se dieron cuenta que cuando Dios insistió en la inclusión del reino celestial, lo decía en serio. Y cuando entendemos esto puede obtenerlo no tenemos otra opción, o se acepta o no. ¡Ellos lo aceptaron y creyeron! Somos el resultado del testimonio y la creencia de aquellos primeros hombres y mujeres que “tomaron un riesgo en Jesús”. El don del Espíritu Santo, dado
en Pentecostés, nos proporcionó el fundamento para salir al mundo. Pero debe haber una respuesta a través de nuestras acciones, hechos y actos humanos. Si vamos a vivir nuestras vidas de acuerdo con el Espíritu
Santo, a la luz del orden divino en nuestras vidas, debemos hacerlo inspirados para hacer siempre lo que es correcto y lo que es justo. Es en lo ordinario donde el Espíritu Santo adquiere un sentido tangible. Tienes el Espíritu Santo cuando perdonas esa grave ofensa que te ha herido tan profundamente o cuando participas activamente en actos por la paz y la justicia. Tienes el Espíritu Santo cuando buscas sabiduría a la luz de una decisión que cambia tu vida o cuando tu salud se ve amenazada por una enfermedad terminal y sabes que no es el final. Tienes el Espíritu Santo cuando todos te han abandonado y aún no te sientes solo porque Dios está contigo y lo sabes. Dejemos que el Espíritu Santo nos forme de la misma manera y de la misma manera que formó a Cristo en el siempre tan luminoso vientre de la Virgen María e invito a todos a repetir después de mí “Ven Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles y enciende en ellos el fuego de tu amor”.

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds: Pentecost Sunday
Reading I : Acts 2:1-11 All were filled with the Spirit! For the people of Israel, Pentecost originally had been
a festival celebrating the wheat harvest and later it was associated with the covenant at Sinai and the exodus event.
To remember this, Jews went to the temple in Jerusalem on the feast to offer sacrifices to God. That is why Jews from all parts of the world were gathered there in Jerusalem when the Spirit came upon the disciples.
In today’s story of the first Christian Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends on the disciples and the Church is born.
Reading II : 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 We are one Body in Christ. In his first letter to the community in Corinth, Paul
stressed that God’s gifts were given to serve and build the community.
Paul compared the Christian community to the human body.
A person becomes a member of this body in Baptism.
Gospel : John 20:19-23 Receive the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel of John the word Peace appears five
times and three of them occur in the form of Jesus’ greeting, “Peace be with you”.
After his greeting in today’s passage, Jesus breathed new life on the frightened disciples, and they received the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The disciples were entrusted with the mission of forgiving sins.

Lecturas y antecedentes dominicales: Domingo de Pentecostés
Lectura I : Hechos 2:1-11 ¡Todos estaban llenos del Espíritu! Para el pueblo de Israel, Pentecostés originalmente
había sido un festival celebrando la cosecha de trigo y más tarde se asoció con el pacto en el Sinaí y el evento de éxodo.
Para recordar esto, los judíos fueron al templo de Jerusalén en la fiesta para ofrecer sacrificios a Dios. Es por eso que judíos de todas partes del mundo se reunieron allí en Jerusalén cuando el Espíritu se encontró con los discípulos.
En la historia de hoy del primer Pentecostés Cristiano, el Espíritu Santo desciende sobre los discípulos y nace la Iglesia.
Lectura II : 1 Corintios 12:3b-7, 12-13 Somos un solo Cuerpo en Cristo. En su primera carta a la comunidad de Corinto, Pablo
destacó que los dones de Dios fueron dados para servir y edificar a la comunidad.
Pablo comparó la comunidad cristiana con el cuerpo humano.
Una persona se convierte en miembro de este cuerpo en el Bautismo.
Evangelio : Juan 20:19-23 Recibe el Espíritu Santo. En el Evangelio de Juan aparece cinco veces la
palabra Paz y tres de ellas ocurren en forma de saludo de Jesús: "La paz esté contigo".
Después de su saludo en el pasaje de hoy, Jesús respiró nueva vida sobre los discípulos asustados, y recibieron el don del Espíritu Santo.
A los discípulos se les confió la misión de perdonar los pecados.

News from the Archdiocese of Chicago regarding Mask Mandate:
...the Archdiocesan COVID-19 Task Force is taking a hopeful, yet cautious, approach during these next several weeks leading up to Phase 5 when we anticipate health department guidance to permit an even greater relaxation of mitigation efforts. As such, we have developed the following guidance while we remain in the Bridge Phase.
Parishes Parishioners at some parishes are very eager to remove their masks while parishioners at other parishes are more hesitant for many reasons (e.g., their community has experienced a higher incidence of COVID infections, the high risk to immuno-compromised individuals, etc.).
...We at St Aloysius have opted to continue to require masks for all attendees at Masses and liturgies until we reach Phase 5 (at which time it is expected that all mask mandates will be lifted).
This option is best because we do not have sufficient staff and dedicated greeters to assume the added responsibility of validating attendees’ vaccination status.
Additionally, registration for Mass and liturgies must continue until we reach Phase 5.
