Bread is the universal food. It is found in virtually any culture, time and in unexpected places. As a group of us seminarians were driving through the Egyptian desert during our stay in the Holy Land we stopped at a Bedouin camp. Once we got there around thirty of us were crammed into one of the tents. There was space for all! Followed by the customary exchange of welcome discourses our gracious host requested his daughter to prepare bread. I didn't see an oven or pots or any possible culinary instrument present in most of our kitchens. Julia Child was nowhere to be found! So, in front of us she mixed some flour and water from a jug and started creating this dough. Turning a metal bowl upside down over blazing cinders contained in this circle of stones she proceed to stretch the dough and let it rest over the small metal dome. In less than a minute the dough got consistency and became beautifully golden. Right in front of our still doubting eyes bread was created! And it tasted like a piece of heaven!

This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. We pay special homage to God's most striking gift to us, Christ in the Eucharist. On the night before he died he took bread, gave thanks and praise, broke it, gave it to his disciples and said, "Take this all of you and eat it. This is my body which will be given up for you." In an attempt to go beyond the crucifixion, as an act of love, he left us his body and blood as spiritual food for the journey. Christ became the living bread and the cup of salvation. This was to the dismay of many.

This is not the Aristotelian God, indifferent, cold, unreachable and distant. This is neither the unquenchable Aztec god demanding one blood sacrifice after another nor the god from the Old Testament so terrible and intimidating. This is our God, close to our humanity and our reality. In the mystery of the Incarnation God became flesh and pitched His tent among us. And from that tent He chose the humblest of forms to remain with His people, the forms of bread and vine. And this we call Eucharist.

To this day, this Eucharistic gift has remained among us. People have tried to define or redefine it, to change it, to update it, and even have tried to reject it. To accept that perishable forms of bread and vine can become by the action of the Holy Spirit, through the hands of God's priests, fallible instruments, is both mind bothering and a mystery. We cannot control it and we cannot fully define it. But if we ever doubt of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist just look at the results of it, look at the many lives that have been changed, elevated, and redeemed. Look at the many people who have return to loving God because of this gift. Look around here among us at the diversity of people, nationalities, ages, ethnicity, economical levels and so forth that become one at the celebration of this Eucharistic meal.

As pilgrims on the road we suffer from many hungers but the greatest hunger of them all is our hunger for God. Eucharist means for us to be brothers and sisters in search of the living God as we forgive each other, as we support each other, as we love each other. We are to go out and to share this gift with others, becoming healing presence and helping hands. Only in such we can become bread for others, only in such we can become Eucharist.

El pan es el alimento universal. Se encuentra en prácticamente cualquier cultura, tiempo y en lugares inesperados. Cuando un grupo de seminaristas estábamos conduciendo a través del desierto egipcio durante nuestra estancia en Tierra Santa nos detuvimos en un campamento beduino. Una vez que llegamos allí alrededor de treinta de nosotros estábamos hacinados en una de las tiendas. ¡Había espacio para todos! Seguido por el intercambio habitual de discursos de bienvenida, nuestro amable anfitrión pidió a su hija que preparara el pan. No vi un horno u ollas o cualquier posible instrumento culinario presente en la mayoría de nuestras cocinas. ¡Margó Arce de Valdelluli no estaba en ninguna parte! Así, en frente a nosotros mezcló un poco de harina y agua de una jarra y comenzó a crear la masa. Volviendo un recipiente de metal boca abajo sobre cenizas ardientes contenidas en este círculo de piedras, procede a estirar la masa y dejar que descanse sobre la pequeña cúpula metálica. En menos de un minuto la masa tuvo consistencia y con un color hermosamente dorado. ¡Justo en frente de nuestros ojos aún dudosos se creó el pan! ¡Y sabía como un pedazo de cielo!

Este domingo celebramos la Solemnidad del Corpus Christi. Rendimos especial homenaje al don más preciado de Dios para

nosotros, Cristo en la Eucaristía. La noche antes de morir tomó pan, dando gracias y alabanza, lo partió, se lo dio a sus discípulos y dijo: "Tomad y comed todos de el. Este es mi cuerpo que será entregado por ustedes." En un intento de ir más allá de la crucifixión, como un acto

de amor, nos dejó su cuerpo y su sangre como alimento espiritual para el viaje. Cristo se convirtió en el pan vivo y la copa de la salvación. Esto fue para consternación de muchos. Este no es el Dios aristotélico, indiferente, frío, inalcanzable y distante. Este no es el dios azteca insaciable que exige un sacrificio de sangre tras otro ni el dios del Antiguo Testamento tan terrible e intimidante. Este es nuestro Dios, cerca de nuestra humanidad y de nuestra realidad. En el misterio de la Encarnación Dios se hizo carne y puso Su tienda entre nosotros. Y de esa tienda escogió la más humilde de las formas para permanecer con Su pueblo, las formas de pan y vino. Y esto le llamamos Eucaristía. Hasta el día de hoy, este don eucarístico ha

permanecido entre nosotros. La gente ha intentado definirlo o redefinirlo, cambiarlo, actualizarlo e incluso han intentado rechazarlo. Aceptar que las formas perecederas de pan y vino pueden llegar a ser por la acción del Espíritu Santo, a través de las manos de

los sacerdotes de Dios, instrumentos falibles, es a la vez mentalmente perturbador y un misterio. No podemos controlarlo y no podemos definirlo completamente. Pero si alguna vez dudamos de la presencia real de Cristo en la Eucaristía basta con mirar los resultados de la misma, mira las muchas vidas que han sido cambiadas, elevadas y redimidas. Mira a las muchas personas que han regresado a amar a Dios a causa de este don. Mira aquí entre nosotros la diversidad de personas, nacionalidades, edades, etnias, niveles económicos y así sucesivamente que se convierten en uno en la celebración de esta comida eucarística.

Como peregrinos en el camino sufrimos muchas hambres, pero la mayor hambre de todas es nuestra hambre de Dios. La Eucaristía nos llama a ser hermanos y hermanas en busca del Dios viviente cuando nos perdonamos los unos a los otros, cuando nos apoyamos los unos a los otros, cuando nos amamos los unos a los otros. Debemos salir y compartir este don con los demás, llegando a ser presencia sanadora y apoyando a los demás de los que nos ayudan. Sólo así podemos llegar a ser pan para los demás, sólo así podemos llegar a ser Eucaristía.

This year’s Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as the Feast of Corpus Christi, takes place in the midst of continuing challenges posed by the novel worldwide Coronavirus pandemic, as well as the fallout caused by the unjust murder of another black man at the hands of a police officer. Troubling as these circumstances may be, there is yet a more alarming situation to contend with. According to recent studies, roughly 70% of practicing Catholics in this country do not believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. This sad reality reflects the ongoing erosion of the Catholic faith in the post-modern world which threatens our very existence as a People of God. As Catholics we believe the Holy Eucharist to be the “Source and Summit of the Christian life (CCC, 1324).” This central belief of our faith stems from the Bread of Life Discourse (John 6:22-59), as well as the Institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper (Matthew 26:25-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:19-23). In obedience to God’s Divine Plan, Christ has been made truly present in the Eucharist to those who believe in him as Lord and follow his teachings. The Feast of Corpus Christi is a celebration of that real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and every time we receive Communion at Mass we are receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Let us never deny this reality.

Este año la solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y La Sangre de Cristo, también conocida como la Fiesta del Corpus Christi, tiene lugar en medio de los continuos desafíos planteados por la nueva pandemia mundial del coronavirus, así como las consecuencias causadas por el asesinato injusto de otro hombre negro a manos de un oficial de policía. Por difíciles que sean estas circunstancias, existe todavía una situación más alarmante. Según estudios recientes, aproximadamente el 70% de los católicos practicantes en este país no creen en la presencia real de Jesucristo en la Eucaristía. Esta triste realidad refleja la continua erosión de la fe católica en el mundo posmoderno que amenaza nuestra propia existencia como pueblo de Dios. Como católicos creemos que la Santa Eucaristía es la "Fuente y Cumbre de la Vida Cristiana (CCC, 1324)". Esta creencia central de nuestra fe proviene del Discurso del Pan de Vida (Juan 6:22-59), así como de la Institución de la Eucaristía en la Última Cena (Mateo 26:25-29; Marcos 14:22-25; Lucas 22:19-23). En obediencia al Plan Divino de Dios, Cristo se ha hecho verdaderamente presente en la Eucaristía a aquellos que creen en él como Señor y viven según sus enseñanzas. La fiesta del Corpus Christi es una celebración de esa presencia real de Cristo en la Sagrada Eucaristía, y cada vez que recibimos la Comunión en la Misa estamos recibiendo el Cuerpo, la Sangre, el Alma y la Divinidad de nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo. RE-OPENING OF THE CHURCHES IN PHASES

After many months we are slowly but surely beginning to open our churches. We here at St. Aloysius Parish are in the process of certification for Phase 1 and 1A. Once we receive the certification we will then start the process for Phase 2. Currently we are still not able to have mass in the Church but once this changes we will let everyone know.

We are grateful for your patience and for your continued support of our parish both financially and spiritually. We will continue to bring you the Sunday Mass on our Facebook page and on our St Aloysius Knights of Columbus YouTube channel until further notice.

Archdiocesan Regulations:

Parishes must have a reopening task force in place and designated volunteer captains for setup, greeting and cleanup crews.

Volunteers must be trained before parishes can get certified for Phase 1, which includes opening for the sacraments of reconciliation, matrimony and baptism, as well as funeral Masses, and Phase 1a, which allows the church to be open for private prayer and Eucharistic adoration. Attendance at those events originally was limited to 10 people.

For Phase 2, parishes must use a reservation system both to limit attendance and to have a record of who was at Mass, in case anyone later tests positive for COVID-19. Those records are to be destroyed 14 days after the Mass if no one becomes ill. Attendance for Phase 2 is limited to 15% to 20% of church capacity or 50 people, whichever is less, to start.

Each parish will open when it is ready and not before.

Currently we have the people necessary for our reopening task force. We are now working on our groups of volunteers for the Setup, Cleanup and Greeters. All volunteers must be under 65 and have no underline health conditions. Those who work directly with parishioners and guests — greeters and ushers — must also be over 18. People over 65 could volunteer if they acknowledged that they understand the risks.

The Greeters and ushers will welcome people to church, they will have to make sure all guests sanitize their hands, wear masks over their noses and mouths, and maintain at least six feet of distance from other people.

The Cleanup team will make sure the areas used are properly cleaned and disinfected immediately after the service.

The Setup Team will make sure that everything being used for the service is set up in its proper place and that spacing for social distancing has been established and marked for the attendees.

Después de muchos meses, estamos comenzando lento pero seguramente a abrir nuestras iglesias. Aquí en la Parroquia de San Luis Gonzaga estamos en proceso de certificación para la Fase 1 y 1A. Una vez que recibamos la certificación, comenzaremos el proceso para la Fase 2. Actualmente todavía no podemos tener misa en la Iglesia, pero una vez que esto cambie, se lo haremos saber a todos.

Regulaciones Arquidiocesanas:

Las parroquias deben tener una fuerza de trabajo de reapertura en su lugar y capitanes voluntarios designados para los equipos de instalación, anfitrión y limpieza.

ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

It is no wonder that followers of Christ are called the Body of Christ. After all, sharing in the same spiritual food and sacred meal, they become what they eat and reveal the Divine Im-age. There is so much power for healing in the community of believers. Through the Eucharist, Christ becomes as present in those who have partaken of his Body and Blood as he has the elements themselves. The very presence of God touches the depths of the human soul and visits a part of us that no human being can ever hope to explore. We are God’s. The sacred Eucharistic meal is a celebration of intimacy, the reun-ion of two loves in constant search of and longing for the oth-er. The community of believers receives the power and the pres-ence to touch and heal in the name of the One they have wel-comed within. It is now within their grasp to change the way life is lived and to more intentionally put into practice the Beatitudes that the Divine Guest has revealed. We are asked to be like Christ and work to create a world of sufficiency, where the greed of some no longer creates the want of others but where all of God’s children can find a home and a place at the table of life. The One who makes a home within calls us to live a life that transforms. We are changed ourselves and now become agents of change for others. We are the Body of Christ. God is with us. We have been nourished. Sadly, many are afraid to try. We know what we are called to do, but we struggle with feelings of doubt as to whether God really is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Do our systems have to change? Is it possible that we somehow missed the mark when we put all of our social networks in place and es-tablished the business of our lives? Perhaps we have to radi-cally rethink our approach and that can scare us. We might have to give something up or change, and we don’t want to. As long as want, injustice, division, prejudice, and scarcity still exit, there is tremendous work for the Body of Christ.

FOMENTAR UNA COMPRENSIÓN MÁS PROFUNDA DE LA ESCRITURA

No es de extrañar que los seguidores de Cristo sean llamados el Cuerpo de Cristo. Después de todo, compartiendo la misma co-mida espiritual y comida sagrada, se convierten en lo que comen y revelan la Imagen Divina. Hay mucho poder para sanar en la comunidad de creyentes. A través de la Eucaristía, Cristo se vuelve tan presente en aquellos que han participado de su Cuerpo y Sangre como él mismo tiene los elementos. La misma presen-cia de Dios toca las profundidades del alma humana y visita una parte de nosotros que ningún ser humano puede esperar explorar. Somos de Dios La sagrada comida eucarística es una celebración de la intimidad, el reencuentro de dos amores en constante bús-queda y anhelo del otro. La comunidad de creyentes recibe el poder y la presencia de to-car y sanar en nombre de Aquel que han acogido en su interior. Ahora está a su alcance cambiar la forma en que se vive la vida y poner en práctica más intencionalmente las Bienaventuranzas que el Divino Invitado ha revelado. Se nos pide que seamos co-mo Cristo y trabajemos para crear un mundo de suficiencia, don-de la avaricia de algunos ya no crea la necesidad de otros, sino que todos los hijos de Dios puedan encontrar un hogar y un lugar en la mesa de la vida. El que hace un hogar dentro nos llama a vivir una vida que se transforma. Nos cambiamos a nosotros mismos y ahora nos convertimos en agentes de cambio para los demás. Somos el cuerpo de Cristo. Dios esta con nosotros. He-mos sido nutridos. Lamentablemente, muchos tienen miedo de intentarlo. Sabemos lo que estamos llamados a hacer, pero luchamos con sentimien-tos de duda sobre si Dios realmente es el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida. ¿Nuestros sistemas tienen que cambiar? ¿Es posible que de alguna manera erramos el blanco cuando establecimos todas nuestras redes sociales y establecimos el negocio de nuestras vidas?
