To avoid any confusion here are Important dates to mark on your calendar.

Only three months until the start of Spring. To celebrate The Allora P-10 State School Spring Fair will take place on Saturday 14th September. Again this year family and friends can enjoy the fun of the fair with stalls, entertainment and plenty to eat through the day.

This year’s Allora Bush Christmas has been organised for Saturday 7th December. A big night

has been planned with many attractions including markets, carols, school performances, sing-a-long and of course the Santa will be visiting to the delight of the children. Herbert Street will come alive and get everyone in the mood for Christmas.

Also on Saturday 14th December everyone can sing along to Allora’s Carols in the Country.

Thank You to the People of Allora and District

The spirit of the pioneers of the Allora district is still part of the soul of the people who live here now.

The Allora & District Historical Society members were aware of the tradition of celebration of the day Allora was proclaimed a municipality on 21st July 1869.The people of the district, fi rst celebrated the Jubilee year in 1919, then the Centenary in 1969. Our small group decided to take on the responsibility of organising the celebration of the Sequential year. On the 20th and 21st July, this celebration “Come Home to Allora”, will take place.

Once the word spread, so many people and local organisations came forward to assist the Historical Society. The 150 Year community based committee have come up with a weekend of activities for everybody to enjoy. Of special signifi cance is the number of individuals and business people in Allora and Warwick who are assisting with sponsorships and donations of cash and kind.

We would like to thank all everybody for their offer of

support, acknowledging the senior students of the Allora State School P-10 who have volunteered to help set up for the event and to serve at the Pioneer Dinner, members of the Clifton Lions Club who have offered to direct parking at the Talgai Homestead, members of Scope and the Allora Men’s shed who are assisting at the Wine & Cheese/Fashion Parade, members of the Clifton Historical Society who have volunteered to open our historical museum and the local young sporting people who have come forward to lend a hand.

The 150 Year Celebration committee would like to hear from anyone who can volunteer some time during the weekend. We need volunteers to help out in the “Information Centre”; assist at display venues, museums and be roving ambassadors. Let the ADHS secretary, Wendy know the times you can be available – Ph. 0488 673 778/[email protected]

A new Entrant in the Beard Growing Competition

Children from the Allora Kindergarten have been busy making a scarecrow, a popular annual event that creates a lot of fun.

Mr Scarecrow looked so good with the crazy beard

they decided to nominate him as an unoffi cial entrant in the Beard Growing Competition as part of the 150 years celebrations. Thanks for Roslyn Lakeman for the pic of Mr Scarecrow.

One arrested after Karara fire

A 38-year-old male has been arrested following a house fi re in Karara on Saturday, June 29, after police initially feared for his safety.

Emergency crews were called to the blaze just before midday.

Fire units from Leyburn, Karara, Inglewood and Warwick attended, as well

as Allora and Clifton Police and QAS from Warwick.

Police were initially worried for the man’s safety but quickly arrested him when they received a call from a concerned citizen in Wheatvale, 40km away from the blaze.

He was charged with arson at the Warwick Magistrates Court on July 1.

New plumbing laws support local building industryNew plumbing laws

which came into effect on Monday will support the local building industry with a streamlined approach to speeding up the application process for plumbing and drainage works.

The new effi cient approach to approving plumbing applications will see approval times signifi cantly reduced. From 1 July, standard plumbing applications timeframes are reduced from 20 to 10 business days.

A Southern Downs Regional Council spokesperson said reduced application processing times will save money and time for both businesses and new residential home owners.

“Faster permit processing saves money and time. Council is committed to supporting the local building industry by embracing the reforms to the fullest. This new streamlined process benefi ts plumbing businesses who can begin work earlier as well as new residential home owners as work will begin earlier,” said the spokesperson.

In the lead up to the implementation of

the reforms, Council’s Built Environment team communicated extensively with local industry stakeholders.

While the new reforms came into effect Monday, Council will not immediately be implementing a fast-track option, whereby applications for low-risk dwellings and sheds connected directly to the water and sewerage supply would be reduced from 20 to two business days, preferring to wait while the new electronic lodgement facility is rolled out and industry demand is assessed during the initial implementation.

“We want to enable industry growth in our region, but we also want to ensure that our online lodgement system is operating effi ciently for our customers before we roll it out. The good news is that the new reforms have been introduced and going forward, our local building industry and community will benefi t from these reforms,” said the spokesperson.

The new reforms also make provisions for amending existing permits. Applicants can apply to

amend or extend the timeframe for an existing permit rather than starting a new application. Permits can be extended for up to two years but there is no limit to the number of times an application can be extended.

All permit work will continue to be inspected by the Council. Reduced

timeframes only apply to obtaining a permit. A person must still get a permit before starting permit work and must comply with the permit and any conditions of the permit.

Athletics Carnival - Congratulations to all students who participated

at the Darling Downs Athletics Carnival recently in Toowoomba. It was a successful day for our students with many

improvements in time and distances in various events.

Congratula-tions to Henry Mc who placed third in the 10 year old boys Discus. This placing has secured his spot in the Darling Downs Team to compete in Brisbane in August.

Q u e e n s l a n d State Hockey Trials - Kai H travelled to Towns-ville recently to participate in the Qld Hockey Trials.

The Darling Downs team was successful in win-ning the boys competition and carnival. Kai was also named Player of the Match at this carnival and scored a goal. This is a fantastic achievement. Well done to Kai and your team.

services is very apparent in the UK with larger towns acting like ‘black holes’ and sucking business out of the rural hamlets. Use it, or lose it.

Our tour commenced with a visit to a most imposing ‘extensive Manor house’ (an understatement), Caldress Manor (pictured), owned by John and Anna Gildersleeve, which protectively sits behind an imposing pair of portal-like gates and an insurmountable fl int-

composed wall – obviously constructed to repel villains.

I’d conservatively estim-ate the garden to be a deal larger than the Allora golf course and it is described as: ‘formal gardens, a (new) Japanese garden, a collection of over 100 Acer palmatum varieties (purported to have alone cost £130,000), wild life garden, woodland walks, wildfl ower meadows and specimen trees – the garden has been designed to peak

in spring and autumn’. To see it is to believe.

The self-made millionaire owner, John Gildersleeve, has had an interesting career in that he joined Shell as a clerk at 18 and then Tesco (the UK food retail giant) as a 19 year old trainee manager. John ‘rose to join the board in 1984 and was a director for 20 years’. He has been chairman of British Land, deputy chair of TalkTalk and chair/ deputy chair of many other companies.

“What”, you may say “has this to do with ‘Allora Streets’”? Well, you may notice a round blue plaque by the front door of the mansion. It is reproduced here so that you can read that the Caldree Manner was the home of ‘our’ Herbert Street namesake, Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert G.C.B.

What a coincidence! When ‘refreshing’ by reading a back copy of The Allora

Advertiser, dated May 8th, after visiting the UK recently, I was most interested to read about the derivatives of “Allora Streets” names as requested by local resident Lynette Gordon-Smith and supplied by the Allora Historical Society.

Three weeks ago, Ann and myself did a day open garden tour of 17 gardens, all in walking distance (for £6 each – bargain!) in Ikleton UK, 9 miles S. of Cambridge. Ikleton village, probably established in Saxon times, is quaint and picturesque with a number of historical houses, some of them brightly coloured and others still thatched. The population is 700 and it has very few of the amenities that Allora has. This lack of local

Joseph Sharpe – Pioneer No. 30 – Foreman for Builders of Queensland National Bank, Drayton Street; House that

became “Mirrabooka” Private Hospital & Worker’s Cottages in Forde Street Allora & Central Theatre – All still in use

Joseph Sharpe came to Allora as the foreman for a Brisbane Company engaged to build the Queensland National Bank. He stayed and set up a building company at his residence in Herbert Street in partnership with William Leggatt. They were agents for a sawmilling fi rm and a monumental , stone and marble company in Warwick. After the partnership was dissolved in 1901 Joseph commenced trading as Jos. Sharpe, Allora, Saw Mill on Forde Street near the railway station. The sawmill was very successful. He was regarded as one of Allora’s leading businessmen. Joseph acquired much property and built houses,

shops and the Central Hall. He built the family home “Chislehurst” on Forde Street opposite the sawmill. He owned the fi rst car in Allora.

An interesting advertise-ment, Under The Licensee Act of 1885 (Section 70) appeared in the Allora Guardian on 21st March 1908. Notice was given that all licensees and dealers in liquor were forbidden to serve liquor to Joseph Tansley Sharpe in consequence of the excessive use of liquor misspends and wastes his estate and injures and endangers his health. The notice was signed by H Ludgate and William Whitman, Licensing Justices, Allora Police Station.

Joseph was well regarded by the residents of Allora. Although he was not elected at his fi rst attempt to become an alderman in 1913, he did serve more

than one term. Joseph Sharpe died in

1919 aged 57 years. His executors, Andrew Hamilton, Town Clerk and his wife Grace managed his affairs and were granted Probate of his estate. Joseph is buried in the Allora cemetery.

Insights of life in the Allora District: Allora Guardian 1899-1901Christmas 1897 -

The streets were full of people walking up and down inspecting the shop windows, exchanging Christmas greetings, and making their fi nal purchases. Both local butchers had fi ne shows of meat, consisting of beef, mutton, lamb, pork and small goods. Christmas Eve and early Christmas morn meant a busy time for the butchers, as those fi ne displays of meat had to be distributed all over the surrounding district.

February 1899 - Mr J.H. Buxton, who is one of our most successful anglers, pulled out of Dalrymple Creek on Friday last, a splendid cod, weighing 37lb. The fi sh was caught at Goomburra and is the

largest we have heard of for some years in local waters.

Welcome HomeFlying Officer John Siddans returned to Allora last week on leave after an absence abroad of approximately 2½

years. F.O. Siddans is a son of Mrs. Siddans sen. of Drayton Street, Allora, and the late Mr. Siddans. He was one of several boys who did their preliminary study for the R.A.A.F. with Mr. J. K. Murray, head master of the Allora State School, and as he was a boy who had not received any secondary education, his elevation to the rank of Flying Officer indicates the amount of enthusiasm and hard work with which he undertook his job. With Lieutenant Norman Hughes who was formerly the Head Teacher of the Spring Creek State School, F.O. Siddans was guest of honour at a welcome home function arranged in the Shire Hall by the Allora Welfare Committee.

Peace CelebrationsThe local Peace Celebrations were a huge success. Early on Saturday morning visitors from outlying districts began to arrive. The celebrations took the form of a triumphal procession which moved off from the Shire Hall at 1.30 p.m. The surprise of the day was the large number of decorated vehicles

which took part comprising horse drawn vehicles and motor cars, and even the modest billygoat cart had its allocated position. Those responsible for the decoration of the vehicles are deserving of the highest praise. The principal vehicles represented “Peace with Victory”, “Peace of the World”, “Australia”, “Red Cross”, and “Belgium”. The procession, headed by the Salvation Army Band, marched through the main streets, to the show grounds.

ALLORAFrom a Correspondent

The railway works seem to be progressing very rapidly, and at Deuchar’s Swamp there is quite a township. Licenses have been applied for, for two hotels, and there are stores and other businesses in abundance. Mr. F. Kates has also erected a commodious hotel opposite the Allora station (Hendon), and a license to it has been granted to Mr. McMillan.(Darling Downs Gazette 14th July 1869)

Wattles Victories Set Up Run to Finals

In a rampaging display on Sunday at Platz Oval hometown heroes the ‘Railway Hotel, Allora’ Wattles Warriors walloped neighbouring foes the

Warwick Cowboys 42 - 6 in a one sided, eight tries to one stoush, the Warriors avenging their fi rst round local derby loss.

While the Cowboys were down some key players, Wattles started the game without valued bench enforcer Dylan ‘Chainsaw’ Wilson, Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy player of the match Mitch Koina

and talented hooker Matt Richards, all late withdrawals from the Wattles line-up which was also without classy centre Nick Van Der Poel on representative duty.

The result boosts Wattles three premiership points clear of opponents & fellow top fi ve side and third placed Warwick on the Hutchies Cup ladder, and just one point shy of ladder leaders

the Valleys Roosters. While Travis Burns has

excelled with his calculating on-fi eld play making this season, he is also burning the midnight oil calculating his approach to the business end of the 100th TRL season with just a handful of matches to play.

Wattles will roll out their many talents in four consecutive away games beginning with the Highfi elds Eagles this Saturday at Highfi elds followed by the Southern Suburbs Tigers and the Goondiwindi Boars.

They can rest up with a welcome bye in Round 15 (21 & 22 July) before a local derby against the Pittsworth Danes at Pittsworth followed by their last 2019 season appearance on their home Platz Oval turf against highly rated premiership contenders the Valleys Roosters.

The 2019 Toowoomba Rugby League fi nals series commences on August 17th.

Burns’ focus is on his side not droping a match on the slide through the second half of the season.

Enterprising WomenLast week the Historical

Society and Denise Dalgleish at the Blue Cow Hotel had a visit from Jenny McKendry whose family has had an association with the hotel that goes back 139 years. From 1880 to 1883 Jenny’s great-great grandfather Patrick Kelley was licensee of the hotel, then called the Royal. Patrick then opened Tattersalls Hotel on the Drayton/Forde Streets corner. On Patrick’s death in 1897 the licence for Tattersalls Hotel was taken over by his 25 year old daughter Ellen Kelley. Ellen married George McCormack in 1899 and they had a daughter Mary Josephine McCormack in

1900. George McCormack died in 1901 and Ellen, his widow, bought the Royal Hotel in 1903. Her family held the freehold for the next 54 years. Ellen McCormack remarried James Flynn in 1904 and between them they held the licence until Ellen’s death in 1912. The hotel was left to her 12 year old daughter Mary Josephine McCormack. Ellen’s estate was administered by her brother William Kelley and her cousin Thomas Maher. A Certifi cate of Title for the hotel was issued to Mary McCormack in 1927, and the following year she married Daniel McKendry. The hotel burned to the ground on the 10th May 1931.

Mary McKendry rebuilt the hotel and took over the license. Following Daniel McKendry’s death in 1932, Mary married Jeremiah Collins in 1935 and held the license until 1946. From 1954 to early 1957 the license of the Royal Hotel was held by Jenny’s father, Jock McKendry, making

him the fourth generation to have an association with the hotel. Following Jock’s tenure the hotel was sold.

Denise Dalgleish bought the hotel in February 1986 and has held it for the last 33 years. In about 1996 she renamed the hotel the Blue Cow.

Population Boost Next Week for Clifton

Platz Oval will be the venue for a hotly contested rugby league carnival when Zone 5 makes its way to Clifton next week.

The carnival has previously been the starting point for some of the NRL’s biggest names including Shane Webcke and Petero Civoniceva some of the elite players to earn their fi rst rep jumper in this carnival.

Clifton will play hosts to eight teams from as far out as Cunnamulla to the seaside power house of Wynnum Manly.

Competition begins next Monday 8th July when our own Central Downs team

will play South Burnett at 9am. Eight games will be played each day. The quality of footy on display will be high and entry is free. As always for our local districts including the Southern Downs the match of the carnival will be on Tuesday 9th July at 2.30pm when Central Downs play Warwick Colts for bragging rites as to who is the better team.

Apart from football for the week local attractions will be open including the Allora Regional Sports Museum as well as the Clifton Aquatic Centre that will host a movie under the stars.

Allora Pony Club NewsThe Allora

Pony Club held its campdraft and gymkhana on the week-

end of the 22nd and 23rd of June. The campdraft attracted 90 nominations from a large area of southern Queensland. A contingent of riders came from Goondiwindi, with a rider from Bollon, as well as local riders and riders from Kilcoy, Park Ridge and Brisbane clubs, a total of 20 clubs were represented. With the present dry conditions, the club is very grateful to the people who lent cattle for the event, Kevin and Di Ryan, Collins Family, Scott and Bronwyn Christiansen and Damien and Leoni McMahon. Mr Dane Bateman very capably judged the event. Allora Pony Club was also very fortunate to have numerous locals volunteer their time to come along and lend a hand over the weekend.

Allora riders did a great job representing the club, with Ashton Collins winning the 8-11 years group and Ryley Collins coming 5th. In the 12-14 years Lily Rickert had to run off for fi rst and in some great riding by both competitors, both gaining full scores in all 3 rounds, Lily came second. Caitlin McMahon also had a great run in this age group. Kira Holmes received third place in the 15-16 years and Jessica Busiko was equal fi fth in the associate group.

Sunday saw the gymkhana start with a cold frosty morning. Allora club were the winners of the March Past before riders moved off to their age groups for the events to begin. As is tradition for the Allora Pony Club gymkhana, the last event of the day is the George Anderson Memorial Fours, which for 2019 was won by the team from Goondiwindi, with Allora’s team in second.

Allora riders to receive age group trophies for the day were Ryley Collins 3rd, Ashton Collins 4th and Kira Holmes 1st. The Allora Pony Club member with the Highest Points not receiving an age group trophy was awarded to Lily Rickert. The last award for the weekend is the C.M. Fraser and Sons Trophy, for Club Gaining Highest Points and this was won by the Goondiwindi Club.

Without the help of numerous volunteers, locals and parents from attending clubs, events such as this weekend would not be possible, and the members of the Allora Pony Club are extremely grateful for their help and support at our event. To the businesses that provide sponsorship to our event your support of the event allows us to hold the event and encourage participation in Pony Club.
