Koalas make a comeback

The koalas are back on Allora Mountain. Allora Landcare Group found a solitary koala there about nine months ago but failed to fi nd any more until last week when inspecting and mapping scar trees. Allora Landcare is encouraged by this as the mountain is suffering in the drought and showing signs of severe fl ora stress. It is still a beautiful place to visit, easy to access, only a two minute drive from the centre of Allora, and with picnic facilities and an information shed with educational material to be found at the reservoir level. The track to the top of the mountain from there is demarcated with rocks and easy to follow.

Littleproud calls for less bureaucracy on land managementMP for Maranoa and

Minister for Drought David Littleproud has called on the Queensland Government to fi x the native vegetation mess in that state.

Huge fi nes may now be imposed by local governments on landholders who may be removing trees they themselves planted, following a decision by the Queensland court of appeal.

“There’s already too much state government bureaucracy around native vegetation and this could add another layer of complexity,” Mr Littleproud said.

“Farmers in drought need less bureaucracy, not more.

“It’s time for Government

to get out of people’s lives. It’s time for the Queensland Government to clean up native vegetation laws which were comprehensively rejected by Queenslanders at the May 18 Federal Election.

“May 18 was a clear message to the Queensland Government not just on supporting mining jobs but supporting regional Queenslanders with dams, and trusting farmers to manage vegetation on their land.

“The Queensland Government should hear this message and change these laws accordingly.

“I’ve heard fi rst hand from drought-stricken farmers

who now had access to 35 per cent less feed as a result of the Queensland Government’s current vegetation management laws.

“Farmers have been

managing mulga in a sustainable way for generations and should be allowed to continue to, without government interference.”

The Toowoomba-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked to a truck rollover in the Southern Downs region late Saturday afternoon.

The rescue chopper landed in a paddock close to the scene.

RACQ LifeFlight Rescue aeromedical crew treated the driver of the semi-trailer for multiple injuries including a suspected spinal injury. He had been trapped in the cabin of his vehicle for a short period of time.

Free mental health workshops for rural communitiesA series of free mental

health training workshops will be rolled out across Darling Downs Health in a bid to better equip rural communities facing ongoing pressures associated with the drought.

The workshops are open to farmers, community members and agricultural industry representatives who want to learn more about mental health and increase their ability to help

others in times of need.“The workshops are

about helping people to help each other,” workshop organiser Richard Henshaw said.

“People can walk away with the skills of identifying when someone is experiencing mental health issues, and knowing how to best assist them.”

The catered workshops are presented by the National Centre for Farmer

Health and funded by Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN and Darling Downs Health.

Warwick’s workshop is scheduled for Tuesday 18

June, 7.30am to 11.30amTo register or for more

Boost For Region’s Tourism IndustryKeen anglers and water

sport enthusiasts can now enjoy Connolly Dam any day of the week with free recreational activities.

Electric and oar powered vessels at Connolly Dam are now permitted seven days a week during daylight hours.

Vessels were previously only permitted to be used on Saturday and Sunday and users were required to be members of the Warwick District Fish Stocking Association (WDFSA).

The change will encourage residents and visitors to make use of Connolly Dam’s recreational facilities and is aimed at delivering a boost to the region’s tourism industry.

Councillor for Events, Sport, Parks and Recreation Yve Stocks said Council is committed to supporting tourism and offering affordable, family friendly recreational activities across the region.

“Our region has many unique open spaces and Connolly Dam has a lot of potential as a beautiful recreational area. Council has worked to promote the area and accommodate visitors including adding 20 camping sites,” Cr Stocks said.

“To increase Connolly Dam’s appeal and attract more visitors, Council decided a membership to WDFSA to use a vessel on

the water should no longer be required.

“This ensures families and water enthusiasts can enjoy the best of what the region has to offer; camping and getting on the water at Connolly Dam.”

SDRC has allocated funds in the Draft Budget for 2019-2020 to support the WDFSA and Stanthorpe Fish Stocking Association to ensure the organisations can continue stocking Connolly Dam and other recreational areas with fi sh.

2019-2020 Annual Budget delivers long-term vision, prosperity for Southern Downs

Southern Downs Reg-ional Council adopted its 2019-2020 Annual Budget on Monday, delivering the lowest general rate rise in more than a decade.

General rates will increase by just 2 per cent, the lowest rise since 2008, and SDRC will extend the early payment discount period from 30 to 60 days to assist residents impacted by ongoing drought conditions.

Utility charges for water, sewer and waste will rise by only 2.75% the same increase as the 2018-2019 Financial Year.

The 2019-20 Budget forecasts an operating surplus of $95,000 and will further reduce Council’s

debt by $1.3 million.Southern Downs Mayor

Tracy Dobie said the 2019-20 Budget looks towards the region’s future and will build upon Council’s strong fi nancial foundation to help the region grow and prosper.

“This Council’s sound fi nancial management and careful planning over the course of its term means we are able to deliver our community the lowest rate rise in more than 10 years,” Cr Dobie said.

“A $35.8 million capital works program will maintain and upgrade the region’s ageing infrastructure, investing in our communities for the long-term.

“The Budget strikes a

balance between working towards long-term fi nancial stability and delivering the key services and projects the region needs to continue to grow, prosper and reach its full potential.

“Council will also continue to support many community initiatives, including our vibrant arts and events scene, providing funding through our Community Grants Program.”

Council’s improving fi nancial position has also led to Council successfully securing millions in grants and funding that will allow Council to deliver key projects.

“Council uses these grants and government funding towards projects that enhance the liveability of the region, which encourages more people and businesses to relocate here and invest in the Southern Downs,” Cr Dobie said.

“I would like to thank the community for their positive feedback and contributing to this important Budget that will help shape our region into the future.”

Council developed the Budget after consulting with Southern Downs residents at six information sessions across the region and calling for feedback which led to 43 submissions from the community.

SDRC has incorporated the community’s feedback into the 2019-20 Budget which delivers strong fi nancial management and responsible planning while still offering important services and projects for a fourth straight year.

For more information on Southern Downs Regional Council’s 2019-20 Budget visit sdrc.qld.gov.au or contact SDRC on 1300 697 372.

Last Pioneer StandingNeil Ross

Ticket No. 10In 1902 an article titled

“A Pioneer Reminisces” by Edward Anderson (Allora’s second Mayor) was printed in the Warwick Argus.

When Edward Anderson came to the district in 1844 there was only one house. The house, situated on the Goomburra Run, (then owned by Ernest Dalrymple) above the Dalrymple Creek was described as a picture of comfort, having the fi nest garden he had seen since leaving Sydney. Neil Ross lived there with his wife Isobella and four children, Grace, Ann, Mary and Alexander known as Sandy. Neil Ross had 1200 head of sheep and fi ne dairy cattle. In 1845, he purchased Gladfi eld Station for 75 pounds. The house was moved there to what became known as Ross’s Corner. Gladfi eld Station was too small and was sold to Arnold Wienholt. Sandy took the cattle to the

Burnett where the family planned to settle. He was murdered by aborigines at Theodore.

Neil and Isobella are buried at Inglewood as is Grace and her husband Fred Bracker. (Fred Bracker was the manager of Rosenthal Station)

An descendant of Ann Ross has recently contacted the Allora Historical Society. She has only discovered this part of her family. In her research she has found an article that said the Ross family would welcome travellers who had made the long journey through Cunningham’s Gap on their way to Glengallan Homestead. She was proud to read one man’s comment “may their stock never run out”.

Martin RoggenkampTicket No. 12Martin Roggenkamp

was a photographer in partnership with his brothers Otto and Christopher in Warwick and Allora. They had come to Australia from their native Germany early 1800s. Their studio

in Albion Street Warwick was known as Victoria Studios.

In 1864, Martin took over the license of the fi rst hotel in Allora, the Dalrymple, situated on 2 acres of land on the northern side of the creek. He made considerable additions to the existing accommodation. He was licensee until 1867 when he was declared insolvent. He then became a travelling photographer and later owned a photographic studio in Toowoomba. His cards read - “Photographic Artist, Ruthven Street”; “Photographer to his Excellency Sir A Kennedy”. (Governor of Queensland 1877-1983).

When Martin died in 1912, his obituary read that he was the oldest photographer in Queensland and had

practiced his calling in Toowoomba for forty years. It said that he owned hundreds of negatives of early settlers and those of old Toowoomba that must possess great value. Martin was said to have a lovable disposition and was exceedingly kind hearted. Aged 75, Martin left a wife, Mary and six daughters.

Ticket No. 12 Martin Roggenkamp has now been sold to Jonno Colfs, who is the great great grandson of Christopher Roggenkamp. Jonno the SDRC Events Offi cer is assisting with the promotion of the 150 Year Celebration weekend .

Rotary Club hosts Biggest Morning Tea

There are few of us who have not been touched by cancer at some time in our lives, whether it be a member of our family or a close friend. Along with heart disease, cancer remains the biggest killer of our modern era.

The Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea brings out the best in the community in terms of the ‘giving spirit’. This year was no exception.

Rotary was handed the event a few years ago and this year we again arranged light entertainment and refreshments in the picturesque surrounds of incoming Rotary president Shann O’Connell’s front garden. So impressive was the community response

that we almost could not fi t in the venue.

The dulcet tones of “The Wuppies”, with crooning and ukulele playing, lent a relaxed tone to a truly gorgeous autumn day. Our thanks to this musical group for the donation of their time. Thanks also to Allora State School for loan of chairs, tables and shade shelters, the Railway Hotel for prizes and crockery, the many contributors of prizes and cakes and slices, the generous donors and those who attended. Thanks also goes to Shann O’Connell (incoming president) for hosting and Liz Marshall (current president) for the impeccable organisation. A special thanks also to the students who attended and served tea and coffee during the morning. Their contribution made a great difference.

We look forward to the 2020 event this time next year, so mark us on your calendar. Of course, we also look forward to a day when cancer is cured and no longer is the scourge of our era.

Australian CitizenAt the last official occasion of the Allora Shire Council before its disbandment, the retiring Mayor, Cr. Jim Deacon, conducted a naturalisation ceremony in which Chris Chandler became an official Australian citizen. Originally from Scotland, she moved to Allora in 1950 to help start up the Dalrymple Private Hospital. Chris has been in Australia for 45 years and had never worried about being naturalised as an Australian citizen. She finally decided to become an Australian citizen because she felt that if she didn’t do it then she probably never would. “I was touched to be part of the last act of the Allora Shire Council,” she said.

Influenza OutbreakThe outbreak of influenza in the Allora district appears to be abating. Since Friday last only two cases have been reported, making a total of 15 cases in all. The outbreak has so far been in the mild form only, and all of the patients are making satisfactory progress. However, nothing is being left to chance and arrangements are well in hand to combat any serious outbreak. The Allora State School has been fitted up as an isolation hospital, and a trained nurse arranged for, also for the service of voluntary helpers. All public

places have been closed and church services curtailed in accordance with the latest order from the Commissioner for Public Health.Free inoculations were carried out by the M.O. Health, Dr. F. Pain, on Monday afternoon, and 54 persons availed themselves of the opportunity.

Captain/coach Brenden Wilson and halfback Tom Morris shone in a 28 - 16 winning result over Brothers on Sunday that allowed the ‘South East Engineering Services, Clifton’ Wattles reserve graders to return to the winners enclosure after a last start loss.

Wilson led his side by example and collected two tries for his efforts.

“We started well considering the wet conditions’ said the skipper. “A few errors in our half kept Brothers in the game, they made the most of their

opportunities and when we kept our shape we scored some good tries.”

Wattles are on the top of the premiership ladder on for and against, and are still dealing with injury issues. Utility back Brodie Frizzell was a pre-match injury withdrawal on Sunday while former top grader Matt McCarthy returned to add some sting and aggression to the forward pack.

Wattles 28 (Brenden Wilson 2, Dale McAntee, Eden Blewett, Ben Duff tries; Tom Morris 4 goals) defeated Brothers 16 (Adam Sutton, Izahia McLeod, Barry Sutton tries; Adam Sutton 2 goals).

Under 18 - Wattles ‘Willett Electrical, Allora’ Under 18 side are still holding out for a much needed victory after fi nishing behind Brothers 10 - 24 at Glenholme Park.

Brothers dominated the fi rst half crossing for three unconverted tries to lead 12 - 0 at the half time break.

Wattles fi rst points came through a try by halfback Travis McDougall.

Talented three quarter Jake Burnell also added to Wattles total with a try in the fi nal minutes of play.

Burnell earned Player’s Player honours, and along with team skipper Jack Duggan and hard working hooker Darby Peardon was

rated among Wattles best in another tough encounter.

While Wattles’ A & Reserve Grade teams enjoy a bye this weekend, the Shaun Henry coached Under 18’s will take on the second placed South Burnett Eagles at Platz Oval kicking off at 3.00 pm.

Brothers 24 (Cooper Wockner 2, Ben Moore 2, Jordan Fisher tries; Jamie Dolley 2 goals) defeated Wattles 10 (Travis McDougall, Jake Burnell tries; Travis McDougall goal).

Successful Annual ASH Futurity held in AlloraThe Eastern Downs

Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society held its annual event at the Allora Show Grounds on the weekend of the 25th and 26th of May. With the continuing dry conditions effecting the area the committee made the decision to alter the program for this year and not hold a campdraft but instead an Open and Youth Stockman’s Challenge. Both these events proved popular, with many competitors supporting both events.

The Branch was fortunate to secure the services of judges from NSW to look over the beautiful line ups of Australian Stock Horses presented over the two days. With competitors travelling from Bundaberg, Wandoan, Goondiwindi,

Northern NSW and South-East Queensland this year’s event saw an increase in numbers across all classes.

The Equivet Breeding Centre Yearling Futurity was won by Mike Davies. The Warwick Equine Vets 2-Year-Old Futurity saw Beth Newton with a win and several other placings for the weekend. The hard-working Branch President, Kate Brown took home third place in this age group. Both the Coolum ASH Stud 3-Year-Old Futurity and Braeview ASH Stud 4-Year-Old Maturity were won by Brett Welsh, who is another competitor who had a very successful weekend. Kaycee Wallen was the winner of the Pursehouse Rural Open Challenge and the Riverina Stock Feeds Senior Hack

Challenge. The Ray Bunch Machinery Junior Hack Challenge was won by Anna Elder. The well supported Dillons Stockhorses Encouragement Challenge was won by Tayla Cann. Winners of the Youth events, which where sponsored by Buffalo Bills Western Store, Warwick Credit Union, SQMC and Braemar ASH Stud, were Eva Hughes, Joseph Hertrick, Emily Hayes and Amaya Smithson.

The Gordon Country Youth Stockman’s Challenge was won by Emily Hayes from a strong fi eld of 16 competitors. The Corbould’s Earthmoving Open Stock-man’s Challenge with 43 competitors saw once again Brett Welsh at the top of the line-up. Branch members Richard Cuffe was in 5th

and Hugh Barnet in 9th. Local rider Kira Holmes was presented with the Eastern Downs Branch Most Successful Branch Member prize.

The Branch is extremely grateful to all the people and businesses that provided sponsorship to the event, for the efforts of the volunteers and Branch members and particularly the cattle donors who lent cattle for the cattle working sections. Without the support of these people events don’t happen. A special thankyou to the Warwick Branch of the Qld Cancer Council who ran the canteen for the weekend. If anyone wants to check out some of the beautiful photos from the weekend head to Flash Pony on Facebook.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKTwo men in a small country town shared a

what they would do with their money.

The fi rst, a businessman, said that he would buy a new motor car, take an overseas trip and

The other, a farmer, said “I dunno, I think I will just keep farming until it’s all gone”.

Supporting– Not Coaching

Our children thoroughly enjoy your support at any type of event. Supporting includes clapping, cheering or a kind hug (from a loved one) or pat on the back. However, when we start telling them what to do and how to do it, we’re coaching.

If you’re not the coach, this becomes embarrassing and humiliating for a child. If your child asks for some feedback or if you’d like to give them some, do this in the privacy of your home. Chances are, your child is already doing their best. Coaching from the sideline is not going to help them.

Flying winger Braydon Wilson certainly added
