Business UpdateThe Town Council invited members of the localcommunity to work with them again on theirOur Faringdon, Our Future Working Party. Thegroup met at the end of July and discussedwhat the possible effect of having a Tesco storemight have on Faringdon over the next fewyears. Faringdon Chamber of Commerce wasrepresented by Sarah Allen-Stevens and DenisePalmer. The members of Faringdon Chamber ofCommerce feel that it is important to protectthe current and future retail offer in the townand to designate space in the local plan toreplace the lost industrial land.

If you would like to become a member ofFaringdon Chamber of Commerce and have asay in the business development of Faringdon, please contact Chamber Secretary, JaneHaynes on 01367 246130 or [email protected]

Waitrose have advised that they have decidednot to proceed with their planning applicationfor a new store in Faringdon, at least for thetime being. Tesco did well to have their appealreversed and Waitrose were a little tardy insubmitting their detailed application.

The concern for Faringdon remains unaltered. That is, an additional Supermarket on theoutskirts of the town will not actually be able tooffer much of an increased product range so willneither stop those who live in Faringdon drivingout to Wantage, Witney & Swindon for theirweekly shop nor attract anyone from outside ofFaringdon onto the town.

A new enterprise has opened for business.Welcome to Faringdon Motorist Centre, locatedin Marlbrough Street it has everything you

“petrolheads” out there could wish for!

Despite the expected holiday 'lull' FaringdonBusiness Breakfast Club (FBBC) managed toattract in excess of 20 local businesses to theSudbury House Hotel on Monday 1st August forits monthly networking event.

After the usual hearty breakfast and anintroduction from Club Chairman, Paul Brame, each delegate spoke for 60 seconds about theiractivities and the kind of referral they arelooking for. Departing from his usual poeticefforts, Paul this month amused delegates witha 'legalese' description of networking that onlya Solicitor would see!!

The next meeting will be on Monday 5thSeptember and the only cost will be £10.00 tocover Breakfast and Refreshments. If you'dlike to join us, please call the booking line on0845 003 1340, email [email protected] to book your place.

In a cash strapped society many of us have found ourselves in financial trouble. Building debt through loans, storecards and other lending can escalate to having more going out than you have coming in.But how can you fix this? Don’t despair and bury your problems but instead get help to tackle them head on.Financial Healer, Erik Cornish, can help get your life back on track and relieve the stresses and strains that debt canbring.Erik, from Bristol, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in London on 1973. He worked for EMI and then ran his ownfinance business before retiring in 2006. He now devotes his time to helping people learn how to conquer debt andcope through financial crisis.Erik is also  member of The Healing Trust, the largest and oldest organisation of spiritual healers in the UK.Erik starts the healing process by arranging appropriate financial solutions with professional advisers in DebtManagement; IVA or Bankruptcy. The phone calls and letters from creditors will then stop. Then, with Erik’s help, youcan start to focus on why the problems occurred to begin with, to prevent them happening again.Erik uses Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Matrix Reimprinting to help with stress management and beginthe inner journey to the sub-conscious to find the root of your fears. EFT helps by improving the energy flow of thebody and removing blockages that may have formed, restricting the body’s natural rhythm. Matrix Reimprintingreplaces old, ego-based, anger and fear with positive energies  to create a new positive mindset. It is estimated that about 90% of our thoughts are in the sub-conscious. Once the inner journey begins, the replacingof negative thoughts with positive thoughts leads to positive outcomes. This often creates a “lightbulb moment” which marks the change from the old life to new beginnings.Erik will then help you on the road to financial peace. Erik will always offer ongoing support and help with new ideas. He turns the financial crisis into a new life.

Wine ReviewLooking through rosé coloured glasses….

Over the past few years, you may have noticed anincreasing number of pink wine on the shelves of wineretailers, even to the extent of entire walls and fridgesdedicated to the shrine of rosé. Visually pleasing, thesewines cover the entire spectrum of what one would callpink – from pale salmon through to a deep cerise.Rosé wines, aka ‘blush’ or ‘rosado’ (Spanish), are mainlyproduced from one of two methods. The berries of black grape varieties (e.g. shiraz) are oftenused and once crushed, spend a short time with the juice incontact with the skins, a process known as maceration. Thelength of maceration is dependent on the required depthof colour and tannin required for the resultant wine.Following maceration, the process of wine productiongenerally followed is that of white wine production. An alternative method is the addition of red wine to white.Although often used in the production of entry level wines, this method is approved in the highly acclaimedChampagne region. What has lead to the uprise of the rosé revolution? Some say that seasonality has a hand to play or argue thatrosé is here to stay. Long gone are the days of Mateus rosé(which, in its defence, in a blind tasting rates very well!) andstepping up to the plate are boutique rosés and specialistrosé.So what may have begun as a response to consumerdemand has become serious business. You be the judge!Taste some rosés available locally…

Splash OutCharles Melton ‘Rose of Virginia’n 2011Barossa Valley, South AustraliaA serious rosé from one of the Barossa’stop men. This rosé facilitates the use of four blackgrape varieties; grenache (55%), pinotmeunier (21%), cabernet sauvignon (14%) andshiraz (10%). All varieties are fermentedtogether to obtain the bright cerise colourand appropriate tannin level. Slow, coolfermentation captures the primary fruit flavours suchas raspberries, with some sweet marzipan. The fruitwas harvested early in order to obtain crisp aciditywhich is evident on the palate via freshness on thefinish. A rosé showing complexity.Available from Den Boer Wines for £17.99

Drinking out (or in)Sollazo Pinot Grigio Blush 2010, Umbria ItalyThis wine is from the producer Podere Le Vaglie, situatedin the heart of Umbria. Flavours of fresh strawberriesentwined with crisp, refreshing acidity give way to a clean, dry finish.Available from Portwell Angel for £14.80

Restaurant Review

As the saying goes, “good things come to those that wait”and this certainly proved to be the case when dining at theSnooty Mehmaan. We had been meaning to visit therestaurant for some time, especially as the local feedbackhas been so positive. On entering, we were made to feelvery welcome and given ample time to choose our tipple, opting for Montes cabernet sauvignon.

The refurbishment has created a lovely feel to the place inan extremely large dining area, yet with cosy corners, ideal for group parties and events.

Check out the music events for 2011, including “The ElvisExperience” running until December.

We both love Indian and Thai cuisine, being familiar withmost dishes, but I have to say the menu is extremelyvaried, offering many (new to us) modern flavours. After a few slurps of wine, we went for the Thai menu.

Starters –Poo Tod (deep fried crab with Thai spices)Goong Been (deep fried tiger prawns in sesame seedbread crumbs, served with sweet chilli sauce)

Main Course –Pla Lad Prik (crispy fillet of sea bass topped with sweetchilli sauce)Pad Med Mamuang Himapan (stir-fried chicken withcashew nuts, spring onion, peppers and dried chilli)

In a word, Scrummy!

The presentation of each plate is a work of art, accompanied by an intricate sculptured vegetablegarnish by a lovely lady called Meemee - it’s so good youwant to take it home.

I love the guide on each page of the menu informing youof how hot each dish tastes, 1 x symbol of a chilli meansmed hot, 2 x chillies hot and 3 x chillies extra hot.Worth a mention is how good the service is, attentivewithout being overpowering in any way.So’ if you are looking for superb cuisine, value for moneyin excellent surroundings, you’d be hard pressed to findbetter than this.

(Turdus philomelos)

The song thrush in your garden in the summer may notbe the same song thrush that you see in winter.Although they are resident in most of western andsouthern Europe, many song thrushes head forwarmer climes in the winter. Much like any holiday-maker, many British thrushes head for the ‘Med’ orSpain in winter (and who can blame them?). Thethrushes we see in wintertime are likely to be fromplaces such as Scandinavia, arriving in Britain to escapeeven colder weather. We have a dominant male thrush in our garden (Derek)who regularly competes with the locals for singer ofthe day. Occasionally he will roost in a tree in the frontgarden, singing all night because of the street lights. Our garden falls on the boundaries of two thrushterritories and Derek will often resort to fisticuffs onthe lawn – and I don’t mean sing-offs, I mean realfighting. The females look on disinterestedly, grabbing wormsas they go – there’s no “Don’t do it Derek he’s notworth it” from them.Song thrushes used to be one of our most commongarden visitors – however, recent surveys suggest amassive decline, due mainly to the degradation offarmland and loss of hedgerows. For the song thrush this has meant that suitablefeeding habitat is less easy to find throughout the year. They are a shy, timid bird constantly missing out to themore adventurous starling or blackbird in the bird-world pecking order. You may not be aware that athrush resides in your garden, keep a look out forbroken snail shells. The song thrush will collect snailsand take them to its favourite stone, using it as an anvilto break them open (The only birds that do this). The song thrush is going through hard times at themoment and needs all the help they can get.Despite being natural ground feeders foraging forearthworms, slugs and snails, try putting some gratedcheese and sultanas on your bird table - they lovethem….

Twelve Oaks Golf ClubAround the time that the inaugural Open Championship was being played(1860) an unknown farmer planted a line of acorns on the roadside nearCrouch Hill. He worked land which borders the ancient market town ofHighworth, from where he was able to admire the 13th century skyline,

dominated by the tower of the medieval church.Today, on land which nestles between that skyline and the resultant magnificent oaks, you will findTwelve Oaks Golf Club.As the oaks have developed, golf as a game-for-all has developed. Early heroes, Tom Morris and WilliePark, have been followed by today’s young guns Rory McIIroy and Tom Lewis. Golf at nine-hole courseshas become the gateway to enjoying the satisfaction and frustrations for many golfers whose aspirationsare to keep the ball on the fairway and relax in open countryside.Golf at Twelve Oaks GC, which is open to all, is Pay & Play with modestly priced membership packagesfor those who are able to play regularly. The course, which is complemented by a restaurant that has aFive* rating and a twenty bay covered driving range, is laid out across gentle terrain.Nature has been allowed to bring its elements to this golfing haven, where hawks and hares blend comfortably with the wildlifesupported by the lake and hedgerows. At 3033 yards (Par 35), Twelve Oaks GC provides a golfingchallenge for a wide range of abilities in an environment that fullyjustifies the description, ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’.Located on the A361 between Highworth and Inglesham the course, driving range and impressively appointed clubhouse are open dailyfrom 7am.For more information visit the website www.twelveoaksgolfclub.comor call (01793) 763749.Satnav users will find the course at Lechlade Road, SN6 7QR.
