We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, gay, confused, filthy rich, comfortable or dirt poor.

We extend a special welcome to wailing babies and excited toddlers. We welcome you if you sing like Pavarotti or just growl quietly to yourself. You’re welcome here if you’re just browsing, just woken up or just got out of prison. We don’t care if you’re more Christian than the Archbishop of Canterbury or haven’t been to church since Christmas ten years ago. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome keep-fit moms, football dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, and junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’re having problems, are down in the dumps or don’t like ‘organized religion.’ (We’re not that keen on it either!). We offer a welcome to those who think the earth is flat, work too hard, don’t work, can’t spell, or are here because granny is visiting and wanted to come to church.

We welcome those who are inked, pierced, both or neither. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down their throat as kids or got lost in the city and wound up here by mistake. We welcome pilgrims, tourists, seekers, doubters . . . and you!

All who are baptized are welcome to share in the Sacrament of the Altar.

To receive communion, please come to the communion rail at the direction of the ushers. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Eat the bread and drink from the cup when it is offered to you. Or, you may hold the bread and dip it into the wine when the cup is offered. If you wish to receive a blessing, rather than communion,

please move to the communion rail and cross your arms over your chest.

Please maintain a time of silence, stillness and centering upon entering our worship space.

The Collect of the Day: Prayer Book, p. 214

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. Amen.

A Collect for the Search for Our New Rector:

Glorious and loving God, steadfast Shepherd and Guide: enlighten and encourage us as we seek a new rector; keep us patient, prayerful and joyful, and grant us clarity of vision to discern your will, that we may welcome someone who will faithfully minister with the people of this parish. Grant this through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

The First Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-10

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. The LORD called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

The Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one flesh.” But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

The Holy Gospel: John 1:43-51

Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

The Prayers of the People

The Prayers of the People

Jesus calls on us to follow him. Let us call on Jesus for the needs, concern and hopes of all God’s people, saying: Lord, hear our prayer.

For the Church: remembering especially Michael our Presiding Bishop, Sean our Bishop, the Diocese of Northwestern PA, the Church of the Mediator in Allentown, our partner parish, St. Margaret’s Church, Emmaus, the Clergy of the Diocese of Bethlehem, the Anglican Church of Australia and the Diocese of Kajo-Kaji, that we may introduce others to Christ through our lives, deeds, and words, let us pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For the person God is preparing to be the ninth Bishop of Bethlehem, let us pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For this parish family, that the Lord may always find us to be servants who listen to God’s voice and delight to do God’s will, let us pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For greater unity among the followers of Jesus, so that all Christians may work together to confront evil and further the work of God, let us pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For the healing of the human family, that the Spirit of God will heal the wounds of prejudice and racism, and open the way for all people to work together for justice and dignity, let us pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who live and work in places of war and violence, especially those in the military, and for all who seek peace, that God will touch hearts and inspire minds to new ways of being signs of God's compassion and peace, let us pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For the hungry and the homeless, for the victims of conflict and violence, remembering especially those who live in fear because of their race or religion, and for those who are in need of our prayers, remembering especially Donald, Matthew, Mike, Helen, Charles, Gaby, Tina, Rich, Mo. Jane, Arlene, Ron, Lloyd and Charlie (pause) that God’s Spirit will rest upon them and give them comfort and strength, let us pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who have died recently, especially Keith Borst, and in loving memory of Robert G. Geelan, Sr., and Robert G. Geelan, Jr.in whose memory the altar flowers have been donated, that they may rejoice to be forever with the Master they followed on earth, let us pray to the Lord, Lord, hear our prayer.

Lifting our voices with all creation, with Mary the God-bearer, Anthony of Egypt and all the saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To you, O Lord our God.

Celebrant: God of mystery, whose voice calls us by name, hear the prayers of your people and give us childlike faith to listen to your words and be ready to follow you in faith, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Stewardship Reflection

“…you have searched me out and known me…”To grow as grateful stewards, we need to really, in our hearts (not just in our words), trust that God indeed has a plan for us – and to spend serious time attempting to discern just what that plan is. When the heart is converted, being a good steward becomes a joy and not a duty.

How to Become a Member

You are very welcome to attend worship services, whether or not you are a member. If you would like to become part of the parish, it is easy. Just give your name, address, phone number (and email address if you have one) to a priest or usher. Or you may leave it in the parish office. All Episcopalians are asked to share their time, talents and treasure. We would love to have you attend our special programs and join our activities. There are so many opportunities to become a working member – by helping with worship services, by joining an outreach group, or by serving on a parish committee. For more information, please contact our Welcoming Committee at [email protected].

To have a name placed on the parish prayer list, please speak with one of the clergy or with the parish office. Names are normally deleted from the list after two months (or if appropriate, after one year). The Daughters of the King also maintain a separate prayer list. To place a name on that list, please fill out one of the blue prayer cards (located on the back of the pews in the church) and place it in the prayer box at the rear of the sanctuary. The Daughters of the King will pray daily for everyone for two weeks—or longer, if requested.
