THE NEW NTNU – THE ADAPTABLE CAMPUS MASTER STUDIO AAR4605 URBAN DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE KERSTIN HÖGER, GEIR BRENDELAND, OLAV KRISTOFFERSEN, BJØRN INGE MELÅS SPRING SEMESTER 2016 In light of NTNU’s fusion process, the government decided to concentrate the Dragvoll campus and the whole new NTNU around Gløshaugen. This implies the relocation of thousands of students and employees from remote places into one large city campus. Given this restructuring, the studio will explore how the existing Gløshaugen campus and its surrounding areas can house the extended university and cater to its new demands. Under the guiding theme of the adaptable campus, the studio seeks urban design and architecture projects for the retrofitting and expansion of NTNU’s main campus. Gløshaugen constitutes NTNU’s technology campus, including faculties for engineering and natural sciences. It is surrounded by other science clusters and academic campuses: Øya health (medicine, St. Olav’s hospital), Høgskolebakken culture (Student Society, planned KAM center for art, architecture and music), Hesthagen business innovation (economy, Teknobyen), and Lerkendal research and development (SINTEF). The studio will develop proposals for how these isolated campuses can be further developed and better connected to one another as well as to the city and landscape. A major theme of the studio is to create a thriving science environment that enhances the student and academic life and provides a sense of an urban knowledge community. An integrated campus will increase the use of existing spaces as well as the demand for new science facilities, interdisciplinary labs, and multi-use spaces for learning, working and exchange. The growing university community will also need more housing and complementing urban services. A better integration with the city will bring the university closer to society and economy, enabling synergies with neighborhoods, businesses and other knowledge institutions. University satellites can nestle in and be shared

with the surrounding neighborhoods like incubators, start-up centers, dormitories, sports facilities, archives, or media centers. In return, the city can infiltrate the campus with services providers, catering companies, stores, café-bars, workshops, recreational spaces, residences, or kindergartens.

The campus areas have large potential for densification and new development. Gløshaugen North offers many possibilities for adaption, addition and adoption of existing buildings and open spaces. Gløshaugen South and Lerkendal can be conceived as a mixed-use science quarter. And the Elgeseter Gate area offers opportunities for in-fill and transformation into a campus city, serving as an urban backbone for the growing university.

The students are asked to elaborate visionary projects for selected campus areas on an urban design and architectural scale. In close collaboration with the teachers, the studio also aims to develop a common master plan for the whole integrated campus. The studio will be conducted in exchange with the local stakeholders and actors, who are involved in NTNU’s campus development. The studio intends to demonstrate how NTNU can become a role model for urban and campus design, by establishing itself as a living laboratory for creativity, quality as well as social and environmental responsibility. Hence, the results will be exhibited and discussed with the stakeholders and the broader NTNU community at the end of the semester.

METHOD & OBJECTIVES

The studio and integrated lab course are structured into five interrelated streams.

Stream 1: Mapping & ImaginingWe will explore Gløshaugen and its surrounding campus areas with mappings, and imaginations. The aim is to investigate the history, characteristics, atmospheres, spatial structures and activities on our site. Constant interpretations of our inventory will inform the design process.

Stream 2: Visioning, Projecting & DesigningThe design process will begin with a visioning phase. Based on your site interpretations, you will propose ideas for the adaption and extension of NTNU’s main campus, by reconciling existing and new structures. Your visions will then be further developed into design concepts, strategies, and proposals throughout the semester. First, you will work on an urban design scale of 1:1000 to 1:500 and create proposals for a selected campus area. Secondly, you will elaborate your proposal on an architectural scale of 1:200 to 1:100 to show the main characteristics of your urban design projects.

Stream 3: ExploringOur explorations will concentrate on campus design and the theme of the adaptable campus in particular. In the integrated lab course, we will critically study exemplary campus projects and typologies as references for your studio work.

Stream 4: Visualizing & Presenting Throughout the semester, you will produce adequate visualizations and write a script about your design and research project. This will help you to guide, document and communicate the progress of your work. The studio and lab results will be featured in an exhibition at the end of the semester.

Stream 5: Lectures & ReadingA lecture series will provide a broad perspective on contemporary urbanism and architecture. It will include introductions to the studio and seminar topics, inputs from local actors and experts, as well as presentations and readings on relevant urban design and architectural issues.

LEARNING OUTCOMEThe learning objective is to gain advanced experience in urban design and architecture, concept development, visionary and strategic thinking, visualization and presentation techniques. These will enable students to tackle complex urban challenges and to synthesize their ideas and knowledge into a design project. The studio and integrated lab seek to provide a comprehensive package linking design, research, theory and practice.
