Welcome new member:

Well, to start the month off on a sour note I wrote an apology email to Glenn
Mitchell, President of the Tucson Garden Railroad Club. The reason being after we
had 39 members sign up for the Turn-a-Round, we had 2 members call and cancel for
various reasons. When we got to Tucson we had approximately 12 members that did
not show up. The Tucson Club provided a great Mexican meal, paid out of their
funds. This was an embarrassment to me for the Club and the members who did
attend. Those who did not attend missed a typical Tucson good time and meal. If
you can’t make it, just call one of the officers to let us know. I offered to compensate
Tucson for the unused food but they politely refused and said “not to worry.”
Another point that was brought to my attention by a member was that most of our
members were not wearing our club name badge that is given when you join, and
many spouses have them. The explanation stated that you could not tell the mem-
bers from just being part of the crowd. I don’t think it is too much to ask to wear
them to show that you are a member on an organized outing so the host’s can tell
you belong and not someone who just dropped in.
Thanks to all who helped at Falcon Field for a successful show.
Looking forward to the Spring Open Houses April 1 & 2.
Now for the good news. Our annual Auction & BBQ will be April 15th
. This year we’ll
be just inside the gate to the left where the picnic tables are. Remember to bring
MONEY and enjoy the food and auction. Please RSVP. Food will be provided.
The May Gazette will be a few days late due to missing officers and members riding
the rails through Europe.

THE ABTO GAZETTE ABTO MEMBERSHIP MEETING MNUTES—Saturday, March 18, 2017
held at Florence Quaintance’s Residence
Ken Hawkins, President, opened the meeting at 11:15am.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. February Minutes-were approved as noted in the March Gazette. Approved by Dave Kitchin and Dennis
Woolfolk.
2. Treasurer's Report-Steve Lewis apologized for the error in the Treasurer’s Report as reported in the March
Gazette. A Blast was sent to all members with the corrected Treasurer’s Report and this report was approved
by the membership.
3. Falcon Field-Steve Lewis mentioned that a sign-up sheet was on the table. Daryll Smith mentioned that set-
up of the kidney bean shape track will be set up Friday, March 24th
at 10am. The event is held Saturday, March
25th
from 9am-2pm and members will operate trains during the open hours and then tear down the module at
2pm.
4. Spring Open Houses will be held Saturday, April 1st
and Sunday, April 2nd
from 10am-2pm each day. Darrell
Woolfolk, coordinator, spoke about the signs and showed the new date and time pieces to be attached to the
present signs. There was quite a discussion and suggestions on how to attach the pieces to the present sign.
Jim Gardner showed his donation jar.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Ken thanked Florence Quaintance for hosting the meeting and wished her a Happy Birthday and it was also
Ken Hawkins Birthday.
2. April Auction and BBQ will be held Saturday, April 15th
at Adobe Mountain. It was reported that there will
be approximately 120 items in the auction. The Viaducts, Bridges, etc. will be on display but not part of the
auction. Food preparation, etc. will be under the charge of Darrell Woolfolk and Darrell also mentioned that a
lot of food was left over from last years’ auction and Darrell said that members will be able to take any leftover
food home. The food was left over due to no shows after signing up that they would attend. Ken emphasized
if you sign up to come to the BBQ, please attend or if you must cancel please contact a Board Member.
3. Tucson Turn-A-Round-Ken Hawkins emphasized that there were 15 no shows and they missed a good time
and a good Mexican meal. Due to the no shows, Tucson Club was left with a lot of leftover food, due to this
situation, Ken asked the membership to offer to pay for part of the meal to the Tucson Club and it was
approved.
4. Membership-Steve Lewis, Treasurer mentioned that there are 61 returning members, 4 new members and
13 no renewals.
5. Thanks-Ken thanked Florence Quaintance and Pan and Craig Morris for opening their railroads to members
prior to the meeting.
Door Prize Winners: Vince Simpson, Colleen Rose and Jim Gardner
Raffle Prize Winner: Roger Crook
Meeting was adjourned at 11:45am by John Mazzoli and David Kitchin.

THE ABTO GAZETTE Hello Club members,
The Modules SIG event at the Falcon Field Open Houses was a huge success! The Modules members banded together to
erect a new, larger, kidney-bean shaped layout that was 30-feet long by almost 20-feet wide that used more pieces of existing
module sections. The new layout was the work of Steve Lewis and his RR Track program.
It was a beautiful day (March 25th) for outdoor railroading. The large crowds made the event fun and we fielded many ques-
tions from the young and old alike. Colin and Daryll put on several demonstrations of Live Steam. When people understand
that the engine is moving under the power of steam and not electric or battery power they are truly amazed. Danny Farrow
started the day by running his FA1 and FB1 with a dome passenger car. The car gave us a spectacular display of ‘brake
smoke’ as one of the trucks experienced an electrical short that melted a wire which caused the smoke. There is a picture of
Danny making repairs along with the offending wire.
As the day unfolded we had battery, electric, and steam powered trains all running at the same time. And, quite often we
had two trains running on the same main line in harmony throughout the event. Our Engineers included Danny, Daryll,
Darrell, Colin and James Ingram.
One notable happenstance occurred just as the public started up. A gentleman that lives at a RV park in Gold Canyon ap-
proached out layout and noticed the iron work of our modules, He made his way to Danny Farrow with a short piece of
Eaglewings Ironworks section in his hand. As it turned out he has 149-fee of 2-track module sections that he wanted to
donate. He contacted a museum (with a railroad) in Apache Junction and was told “No thank you, we’re not interested.”
When he spoke to us and found out we’re a non-profit charity club he offered to donate all his module sections to our club.
You can do the math—this was a valuable donation. Danny and Daryll will pick up the items and transport them to our
storage unit.
Aside from the usual activities, I want to recognize the “salesmen” on our club. Ginny Morris, Colin Criswell, Darrell Woolfolk,
and James Ingram worked the crowds handing out flyers for the Spring Open House and answering questions about the club,
trains, and various other topics.
Thanks to all who came out and helped with set-up, tear down, and educating the public. This was another successful event.
