NEW YORK CITY — “The name ‘Chippendale’ was like ‘Kleenex.’ It became shorthand for ‘English Roco-co’ and English and American furniture in this style.” The wry Morrison H. Heckscher, curator emeritus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s American Wing, coined this charming simile to express the domi-nance of the legendary moniker. He and other devo-tees of Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779) are exploit-ing the 300th anniversary of the cabinetmaker and designer’s birth to refocus attention on this signifi-cant talent. During the commemora-tive year of 2018, exhibitions and events on either side of the Atlantic honor the most famous furniture maker of the Eighteenth Century and perhaps of all time.

A host of museums and organiza-tions have marshaled forces to bring forth “Chippendale 300, 1718–2018, A Celebration of Britain’s Greatest Fur-niture Maker.” The programming ini-tiative taking place in England, Scot-land and the United States is

represented by the website www.chippendale300.co.uk. The online clearinghouse lists exhibitions, tours, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, apprais-al days, thematic trails, art competitions, concerts and even a tercentenary garden bed planted in Chip-pendale’s hometown of Otley. Leave it to the English to “say it with flowers.”

Born in Yorkshire, Thomas Chippendale set up a cabinetmaking shop in London by 1748. His estab-lishment grew into something quite large with workshops, a retail shop and a timber yard. Servic-

es included interior decoration and even extended to home security. According to Leela Meinertas, curator in the department of textiles and fashion at the Victoria and Albert Museum, one could hire a night watchman to guard the gate through Chip-pendale’s firm. His entrepreneurial versatility not-withstanding, Thomas Chippendale is best remem-bered for his pattern book, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, first published in 1754. Through it, Chippendale portrayed the au courant “tastes” of the Gothic, the Chinese and the Modern

— all aspects of a style called the Rococo since the 1840s.

The Chippendale story has its share of unexpected twists. As Heckscher pointed out in conversation, while pieces of furniture can be tied to Chippendale’s workshop, none can be tied with certainty to Thomas Chip-pendale himself. Because the work-shop did not mark its products, researchers have had to rely on pri-

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Continuing through September 30, the

Portsmouth Historical Society’s Discover Portsmouth Center is pre-

senting a comprehensive,three-part exhibit giving credit to Ger-

trude Horsford Fiske (1879–1961) and other women artists. Fiske

was an accomplished Impressionist painter who trained under

Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson and others. Perhaps not as well

known today as some of her contemporaries, she won many awards

during her lifetime. Some consider Fiske to be at least the equal of

Tarbell and as good as Mary Cassatt.

“Gertrude Fiske: American Master” features 65 of her works,

including several award-winning paintings not seen since her

death. A heavily illustrated exhibition catalog with essays by Carol

Walker Aten, exhibition curator Lainey McCartney and Richard M.

Candee accompanies the show. The first study of Fiske to be pub-

lished in decades, it places the artist in context with Candee’s essay

on three Fiske contemporaries and concludes with an examination

of women artists working in the New Hampshire Seacoast region

today .Concurrently with the Fiske exhibit, the upstairs gallery at the

Discover Portsmouth Center is presenting “Seacoast Masters

Today,” showcasing about 40 works by contemporary women artists

Amy Brnger, Donna Harkins, Sydney Bella Sparrow and Pamela

DuLong Williams. Running concurrently, “Sisters of the Brush and

Palette,” featuring 35 works, recognizes Fiske contemporaries Anne

W. Carleton (1878–1968), Margaret J. Patterson (1867–1950) and

Susan Ricker Knox (1879–1954), who trained and painted in Bos-

ton, Portsmouth and southern Maine.
