DEERFIELD, MA – Historic Deerfield presents the virtual forum, Invisible Makers: Textiles, Dress, and Marginalized People in 18th and 19th Century America, on Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 9:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Globalized manufacturing in the 21st century has stimulated a greater need to understand where, how, by whom, and under what conditions our clothing is made. In the past, the weaving of textiles and making of everyday clothing has largely been perceived as anonymous, especially with regard to marginalized people living in white societies. Research into the efforts of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color to design, produce, acquire, and modify textiles and dress within the Anglo-European, North American framework has historically been difficult to quantify because of a paucity of surviving evidence as well as limited attempts, past and present, to record and credit those efforts. This forum details contributions of often-over-looked populations in American society to the textile and clothing trades, and promises to enrich and deepen current conversations about fashion both past and present.
Join Historic Deerfield on April 10th to hear lectures from a dynamic roster of academic and museum professionals discussing examples of the important roles and contributions of BIPOC textile and clothing producers and consumers in the 18th and 19th centuries. Presented as case studies, the research includes textiles and clothing produced by forced labor within plan-tations; people of color working as tailors and dressmakers in Massachusetts; and marginalized people who fashioned their dressed bodies using Anglo-European garments in ways that both subverted normative styles while expressing “other” cultural identities. CONCORD, MA – In 1845, feminist Margaret Fuller described the ultimate goal of women's suffrage: “We would have every path laid open to Woman as freely as to Man.” Spoken seventy-five years before American women had the legal right to vote in national elections, Fuller’s rallying cry inspired a movement for women’s equality that continues today.
In Concord, Massachusetts, generations of women—some famous and some almost invisible—fought for their right to work and live how they pleased, often in defiance of tradition and propriety. They campaigned, organized, and advocated to expand their liberties and the liberties of others. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, this exhibition celebrates their remarkable achievements.
Among the many firsts explored in the exhibition: First woman journalist to serve during wartime overseas for a major American newspaper; First woman to register to vote in a Concord town election; First woman to serve on the Concord School Committee; First woman licensed to drive an automobile in America.
Each portrait, artwork, quilt, or piece of historic clothing on view, carefully preserved by succeeding generations and now by the Concord Museum, makes it possible to create meaning from the lives of ordinary citizens, as well as prominent residents, such as –
Mary Merrick Brooks, the daughter of a slaveholder, was a driving force of radical abolitionism in Concord; 12-year-old Black student Ellen Garrison walked hand in handwith her white classmate Abba Prescott in Concord's 1835Bicentennial ParadeCynthia Thoreau and her daughters Sophia and Helen werecharter members of the Concord Female Anti-Slavery Society;
Louisa May Alcott became, by persistence and ability, one of America’s most popular authors; Sophia Peabody earned the commission to sculpt a bust of Laura Bridgman, the first blind and deaf person to communicate in the English language; Painter Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts brought the international art world to Concord with the establishment of the Concord Art Centre in 1917.
The Concord Museum is the one place where all of Concord’s remarkable past is brought to life through artifacts from the Museum’s outstanding collec-tion, rarely-seen images, period room settings, audio presentations, and creative hands-on activities. Highlights include: “Why Concord?,” – six history galleries accompanied by a film, Exploring Concord; A nationally-significant collection of decorative arts, featuring Concord-made clocks, silver and furniture; Native American stone tools; The 1775 lantern ordered by Paul Revere to be hung in the church steeple and made famous by Longfellow’s poem Paul Revere’s Ride; Emerson’s study where he wrote his influential essays; The world’s
largest collection of Thoreau’s possessions, including his desk. In addition to the changing exhibitions in the Graham Gund-designed galleries, the Museum features a Museum Shop and a complete year-round calendar of programs for adults and children. concordmuseum.org

DEERFIELD, NH – The show will go on in Deerfield, New Hampshire. While the status of the May shows in Brimfield, MA is still unknown, the owners of Brimfield Antique Shows LLC, which owns and oper-ates the Hertan’s field, are hosting a new show in Deerfield, NH on Memorial Day weekend, May 29th and 30th. The show, known as Brimfield Antique Shows North Country, will take place at the Deerfield Fairgrounds and is being promoted as a new show that will run in addition to the Brimfield, MA antique show.
The Brimfield Antique Shows North Country antique show and flea market will feature over 250 dealers, including antique, handmade, and home décor dealers, and offer food trucks, music, and fun events such as a scavenger hunt. The response to the show has been exuberant. “We already have over 150 dealers signed up and advance tickets are selling rapidly with several hundred sold already,” states Klia Ververidis, CEO and Chief Show Promoter for the Brimfield Antique Shows LLC.
The in-person show will also have an online component through Brimfield LIVE Online which will allow shoppers who cannot make it to New Hampshire to shop from home. Brimfield LIVE Online, the brainchild of Klia Ververidis, was created when the 2020 May show in Brimfield was canceled. Fueled by the pandemic and the quarantine, the online show was an instant hit reaching over 1.5 million unique page views in its first year. “The online shows proved to be so popular we realized there is a tremendous opportunity to reach an audience
beyond geographical boundaries and we are excited to have our first in-person and online hybrid show this May.”
Joining the Brimfield Antique Shows North Country Show is another well-known New Hampshire show, Sage Farm, which will occupy three buildings at the fairgrounds and is being promoted as a show within a show. “Sage Farm has been holding shows in New Hampshire for the past 21 years and has a unique and large following of their own. We are pleased that they will be joining us for our inaugural New Hampshire show and look forward to partnering with them for future shows.”
The two-day event is an indoor/out-door show and will be conducted in accor-dance with all the State of New Hampshire safety guidelines that are in effect at the time of the event. The show will operate between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday.
The cost of general admission is $5 per person. Early buying is offered each day between the hours of 7 a.m.-9 a.m. Early admission is $25. Camping is allowed at the fairgrounds for a fee of $30 per night for RV’s and free for tent camping which requires no hookups. Hotel accommodations are also available. Information and advance tickets are available at www.brimfieldliveonline.com. Daily information is also posted on the Show’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/brimfieldlive. Information about becoming a vendor or shopping is available on the website, by email at [email protected] or by calling 781-324-4400.

PALMER, MA – Marier’s Antique Flea Market kicks off its first show of the 2021 season on May 6th-10th, marking Marier’s enters 42nd year of operation in Palmer, Massachusetts. The owners thank their loyal vendors and the many buyers who have made this popular market the success it is today.
“We are pleased to bring forward a year of renewed energy and appreciation for the Antique Market! In true appreciation of the legacy that Russell C. Marier Sr. had the foresight to establish years ago along with the outstanding bottle and antique collection that Fred Swiechowicz worked endlessly to collect, we are ready to kick off the 2021 show series dedicated to our her-itage and will do our part in getting the economy reopened,” says Rose Swiechowicz, Russell’s daughter.
Ross and Rose Swiechowicz and family hope you will join them on the field again this year for some good ol' hometown fun, food, and laughs as you stroll and admire the setups and commitment to true antiquing that its show field vendors have to offer.
Typically held in the days leading up to Brimfield Antique Week just a few miles down the road from the Route 20 show fields, Marier’s will take place regardless of the final decisions made on the Brimfield shows.
Dealers come from all over the country to do the Marier’s show, bringing everything from porcelain signs, antique furniture, pottery, jewelry, antique tools, fishing gear, fine art, art pottery, vintage dolls, kitchen primitives, and more. This year, there’s a brand new food truck
serving homemade fare to buyers and vendors alike and for some toe-tapping fun the band Still Pickin’ will perform on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
“COVID-19 has brought about a great deal of uneasiness and worry to everyone’s lives. We want you to know that the safety of our vendors and customers is of the utmost importance to us. We are closely following CDC guidelines along with other federal, state, and local guidelines, resulting in some changes to our policies and practices. We are sincerely looking forward to being with our friends again this year. See you soon.”
Marier’s Vision is to preserve these shows as a family-owned and operated business. They will continue to connect the local community with vendors and sellers from all 50 states, Canada and Europe, and bring them together for a fun-filled week of camaraderie. Their mission is to provide the most dedicated, honest,
punctual group of professionals to assist both sellers and buyers throughout the years to maintain a hometown, laid back, friendly atmosphere, while supporting our community by bringing customers to local stores, lodging, and restaurants three times a year.
Marier’s 2021 show dates are May 6th-10th, July 7th-12th, and September 2nd-6th. They are located right on Route 20, 1628 Park St., Palmer MA. To learn more about these shows, including how to rent a space or directions to the show, be sure to visit their Facebook page, go to mariersantiquefleamarket.com or email [email protected].
