6th Grade Schedule
Notes to Parents It’s hard to believe that we are already at the
end of the first quarter! We have had an
awesome start to the year. We thoroughly
enjoyed our field trip to the Science Museum
of Virginia. The students were incredibly
well behaved and we couldn’t have enjoyed
the day more than we did! We are looking
forward to the next quarter and the exciting
activities that will happen in 6th grade and at
LMS. Please let any of us know if you have
any questions or concerns!
With much excitement,

What are we learning?
Reading
Grade level SOL’s to cover: We cannot believe the end of the first quarter has
arrived!
As we move into the second quarter, please
remember this is the quarter that is difficult for all
students. We have 2 holidays during this quarter
and with the time off, it is difficult for children to
focus and re-focus. I ask that you keep your
children reading. They can take AR Tests when
we return back to school. Speaking of AR Tests,
6th grade is participating in Book It! Each month
from October through March, I will be giving one
coupon for a free Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza
Hut to each 6th grade student who passes an
appropriate level AR Test.
The second nine weeks, we will focus on reading
nonfiction. We will also reading skills in areas of
text structures, main ideas, and making inferences.
We will also look into Poetry and figurative
language.
Projects this quarter: There are no major projects planned at this point. I will be taking a grade on spelling notebooks periodically throughout the nine weeks and year. For each spelling list, students are required to put all words in ABC order, write definitions and write sentences for each word.

Read! Ask your child questions about what
they read.
Math
Grade level SOL’s to cover: Over the next 8 weeks we will be covering a variety of exciting topics including Converting, Comparing and Ordering Fractions, Decimals and Percent’s (SOL 6.2), Fractions & Mixed Numbers (SOL 6.6 ), Modeling the Multiplication and Division of Fractions (SOL 6.4), & Probability (6.10), as well and exploring the circumference and area of circles.
Projects this quarter:
While we have no big projects this quarter, each unit we cover concludes with a test/quiz. Students are also required to keep an Interactive Notebook in math class in which they will receive a notebook check every 9 weeks.
