BOARd MEMBERs

Greetings Everyone,With 2011 drawing to a close I want to thank everyone who helped or participated in a wide range of events this year. It was a really good year and I hope to see more people coming out to enjoy the events in 2012. We have some great things planned. First up: The Detroit Auto Show (or Greektown) bus trip is back. It’s scheduled for January 15. Last year’s reviews of the show were excellent and this year looks to be even better. Tickets make great stocking stuffers!!!Our Holiday Party is set for Saturday, January 28. This year we are having it at the Bertram Inn in Aurora. And, drum roll, please: It is Casino Night! Yes, it is a fun-filled night with play money, although the prizes will be real. The second part is the hotel has set up a special room package of $99 for Saturday night which will include the Sunday morning brunch. So, no one has to worry about driving, winter weather, etc. This is going to be a Great Party! Our driving school season kicks off at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course March 30-April 1. As always, this is our annual BimmerWorld Club Race/competition school along with a Saturday-Sunday High Performance Driving School. Friday will be an instructor/invited guest lapping day. Memorial Day weekend will find the chapter hosting the same type of Friday lapping day along with a two-day HPDE. The weekend also will host the Premier Race for Club Racing. Details on all will be available soon. And now, what is probably the worst-kept secret in history–O’Fest! O’Fest 2012 is coming to a town near you. It will be in Columbus September 17-23. Buckeye Chapter is still working on details such as hotels and such; more information will be announced soon. My understanding at this point is that we will be handling the Race School and the Club Races. There will be a need for volunteers to help with all events. So, if you would like to assist or have a specialty in any area, please drop me an email at [email protected]. Once Buckeye lets me know what help they need, we will pass those emails along to them and let you know what is happening.Drive Safely,Harv

ON ThE hORIZON...

sunday, January 15, 2012We have reserved another “Battleship of the Highway” to whisk you away to Motown. Our departure point is the Independence Holiday Inn, 6001 Rockside Rd, Independence, Ohio. We leave at 8:00 a.m. In true German efficiency, show up 30 seconds late and you run the risk of missing the bus! We’ll leave the show site at 5:00 p.m. and arrive back in Northeast Ohio around 7:45 – 8:15 pm.Cost is $45.00 per person and includes a $12.00 ticket to the show (a stocking stuffer perhaps?). The exact cost to the chapter depends upon the number of folks going; any overages will be donated to the Cleveland/Akron-area Make-a-Wish Foundation or the All-American Soapbox Derby.• Bring a spouse, significant other, friend or all of them (or put one of those folks on the bus and get them out

of town for a day!).• Some manufacturers have hospitality areas for current

owners, generally with admission by showing a car key. Bring yours! Big show, it’s nice to set-a-spell.

• Any food, beverage, spirits, or other items before, during, or after are your responsibility.

• Some folks even sneak away to the Greektown Casino. What happens in Detroit stays in Detroit. Lots of good food is available in that area, but side trips are entirely up to you.

Remember, if you get on a hot streak, the bus waits for NO ONE.

Questions? Call David Fisher at 330-659-5000 or e-mail him at [email protected]. Another resource is Cindy Reller at [email protected] year we are limited to 50 people so space will be reserved in order of checks received. Your check must be received by December 26, 2011. TECh TIPs Q&A

BMW E38 7-series Inoperative speedometer and ABs Warning Light – 740i, 740iL, 750iL

Q: I have a speed sensor warning light on. The speedometer does not work and the abs light is on. I just replaced the right rear abs speed sensor and it does not seem to have fixed the problem. Any other ideas? Do I replace the left also?A: The speedometer input is taken from the left-rear ABS speed sensor, on the E38 7-series chassis (740i, 740il, 750iL 95-01). The similar vintage E39 5-series uses the right-rear ABS sensor for speedometer input. You can either install the old right-rear sensor into the left-rear position (to see if the speedo works and the ABS fault extinguishes) or purchase a new sensor to install at the left-rear position.

BMW M30 6-Cylinder Water Pump Replace – how To – E12, E28, E34, E23. E32, E24

Q: Do I need special tools to remove the water pump in my 1988 535i. ?A: There are no special tools required to replace the water pump on the M30 6-cylinder engine in your 535i. This M30 6-cylinder has been used in BMWs from the mid-70s through the early-90s in Bavarias, CS Coupes, E12 E28 and E34 5-series (530i, 528i, 533i, 535i, 535is through 93), E24 6-series (630sci, 633csi, 635csi, L6 through 89), E23 E32 7-series (733i, 735i, 735iL, L7 through 93).You will need standard metric wrenches and sockets and normal mechanic hand tools. The Bentley repair manual for your E28 535i (or other applicable models) covers the task well. We would suggest that you consider replacing the three accessory drive belts while replacing the pump, as you will be removing them to access the pump. Additionally, this would be a good time to consider coolant hoses and the thermostat, since you will have the cooling system opened up. And, don’t forget the BMW coolant.

BMW DIY – Replacing The Cabin Microfilter (Micro filter) In an X5 thru 06 – E53Most BMW owners are very good about changing their engine’s air filter, but they rarely change the cabin air micro-filter. (If your response is, “I didn’t even know my BMW had a cabin air microfilter,” you’re not alone.) The size and shape of these filters vary widely from model to model, as does the step-by-step procedure for changing them. BMW and MINI recommend that these filters be changed every 15,000 miles (down from 30,000 originally). A 6-month inspec-tion of the filter will reveal where the actual change interval should be. Once you install the new microfilter, you’ll notice that the car smells fresher and the AC works better.

BMW sRs Airbag and seatbelt Warning Lights

Q: The Air Bag and Seat Belt Sensor is appearing on the control panel of my 2004 530i. How do I resolve this problem? Is this possibly a manufacture defect?A: Your problem may be a faulty seat belt latch assembly (the sensor switch in the latch). However, there is no way to know this with certainty unless you have the internal SRS (air bag) fault codes read. For your 2004 model (and MINIs), this will need to be done with a multi-purpose diagnostic tool that a well equipped BMW specialist would have. For BMWs 1994 through 2003, we offer a specific SRS code reading and reset tool that you can use at home to read the fault codes and reset the system. The standard OBD-II engine management code readers will not access the SRS system. Once we have the fault code(s), we can determine the proper corrective action(s).

BMW Coolant Level Warning – All Models

Q: The check coolant message appears on my 1998 540i. My gauges are normal. I have not taken radiator cap off because I could not figure out how to remove the plastic screw cap. Thoughts?A: The first step in researching the “check coolant” message, on any BMW, is to visually inspect the coolant level. To do this, you need to remove the coolant reservoir (coolant expansion tank) cap. The cap simply turns counter-clockwise and then can be removed. Once the cap is removed, visually check to see where the coolant level is within the reservoir. The level should be within two to three inches of the top. If the level is low, add enough to bring it the level previously mentioned. If the warning continues, you likely have a faulty coolant level sensor. On some models, the fault may be due to a faulty reservoir that is broken internally. This failure (the internally broken reservoir) is unique to the late model V8 and V12 cars (E39 5-series, E38 7-series, E31 8-series and Z8) and will prevent the level sensor from functioning properly.

BMW Engine firing Order and Cylinder Location4-cylinder (US models): M10 – Single cam, produced through 1985 (US) S14 – Twin cam, produced for 87 through 91 M3 (US) M42 & M44 – Twin cam, produced 1990 through 1998 (US)

Cylinder numbering is from front to rear; 1 at the front and 4 at the rear. Ignition firing order is 1-3-4-2.

These engines have only one bank (bank-1). All cylinders (1 through 4) are considered bank-1.

BMW Group Communications Woodcliff Lake, NJ – October 14, 2011… With the announcement of the sixth generation BMW 3 Series Sedan, the benchmark by which all sport sedans are measured just got raised. The pioneering history of the 3 Series serves as inspiration for the new sports sedan,

whose powerful styling represents a fresh interpretation and conscientious development of traditional BMW design cues. It will not only set new standards for performance and handling but also for luxury, technology and efficiency as well. The all-new BMW 3 Series Sedan arrives in US showrooms in February 2012 as a 2012 model. The new BMW face, with elongated headlights reaching along as far as the BMW kidney grille, emphasizes the new BMW 3 Series’ sense of width and strengthens its athletic overall profile. The sixth generation of the 3 Series has grown moderately in size compared to its predecessor, with its wide track (front + 37 mm/1.46 in., rear + 47 mm/1.85 in.) particularly prominent, and the car’s length (+ 93 mm/3.66 in.) and wheelbase (+ 50 mm/1.96 in.) also accentuates its sporting allure. Inside the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, the rear passengers will appreciate the noticeable increase in space

made possible by the larger dimensions. And the BMW 3 Series range is now also available in a trio of trim and equipment variants – the Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line. Each presents its own individual take on the character of the sports sedan, with exclusive, high-quality material combinations and unbeatable build quality underlining the premium ambience of the new range. Drive and chassis technology have always been key areas of expertise for the brand, and agility and driving dynamics remain outstanding attributes of the new

BMW 3 Series Sedan. The new car belies its larger dimensions with an equipment equalized curb weight 88 lb (40 kilograms) below that of its predecessor.A choice of two muscular, refined and efficient engines – which both feature new BMW TwinPower Turbo technology – will be available for the new

BMW 3 Series Sedan in the US market. In addition to the already successful6-cylinder N55 engine powering the 335i, customers can also opt for the new turbo-charged 4-cylinder (N20) variant in the BMW 328i. This latest-generation engine, initially introduced in the 2012 Z4 sDrive28i, rewards the driver with both a dynamic driving experience and significantly reduced fuel consumption. The innovative 8-speed automatic gearbox – which is a first in the segment – opens up a whole new level of driving experience. It can be specified in combination with either the 328i or the 335i and includes the new Auto Start-Stop function. Compact and exceptionally

efficient, it allows the new BMW 3 Series to match or outperform models fitted with the standard six-speed manual gearbox in terms of fuel economy. The new 8-speed automatic brings together shift comfort, dynamic performance and efficiency of the highest order, making it the perfect partner for the new sedan’s dynamic potential. As components of the BMW EfficientDynamics technology line-up, theAuto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, and need-based operation of ancillary components (including an on-demand air conditioning compressor) also play their part in reducing fuel consumption. Added to which, the new Driving Dynamics Control switch, which allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Sport, Sport + and ECO PRO mode, gives both models the potential to further improve these figures. This ECOPRO mode helps drivers maximize fuel economy through their driving style, thereby enabling them to increase the distance they can travel between visits to the pumps. BMW will add another cutting-edge engine to the line-up in 2012, when the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will premiere.

BMW ConnectedDrive offers an unmatched combination of available driver assistance technology and mobility systems for the new BMW 3 Series range. A new arrival in the premium mid-size segment is the latest-generation full-color Head-Up Display, which projects key information – in sharp resolution – onto the windshield so it appears directly in the driver’s field of view. Also available is Surround View with Side View and Top View, which gives a bird’s-eye perspective of the vehicle and the area around it. In addition, an available Parking Assistant system helps the driver to parallel park. Among the other assistance technology available under the BMW ConnectedDrive banner are the Active Blind Spot Detection System and Lane Departure Warning System with camera-based Collision Warning system, which are offered for the first time in a BMW 3 Series. A Navigation System with Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI) and an innovative comfort access function allowing hands-free opening of the trunk lid are all included on the options list.

Munich, 12th December 2011. Martin Tomczyk (DE) may only just have turned 30, but he is an old hand in the DTM.

The driver from Rosen-heim in Germany has been a regular fixture in the touring car series since 2001. This year he fulfilled his greatest ambition by winning the title. Tomczyk has now started out on a new chapter of his DTM career: the reigning

champion has switched to the returning BMW. From 6 th to 8th December he completed his first test as a BMW works driver at the “Circuito Monteblanco” in southern Spain. In an interview, Martin talks about what attracted him to the new challenge, the BMW M3 DTM, and his goals and expectations.

“What do you find so attractive about being involved in the BMW dTM project?”Martin Tomczyk: “Not only must BMW build a new car, but it is practically a newcomer to the DTM again after 20 years away from the series. This means that it must use the know-how it brings with it, from touring car racing and Formula One for example, and adapt it for the DTM. That certainly won’t be easy: the DTM has already shown that everything must always be spot on in order to produce top performances. That will be our main task during the winter. It will be a real challenge to make the car quick while also preparing the teams and BMW’s motorsport department for the DTM.”

“And yet you decided to take on this challenge. Why?”MT: “After 11 years with another manufacturer, and having won the championship, I was looking for a new challenge. I found this at BMW. I have really enjoyed my first week in Munich and now the first test. It is something new, and I can also contribute a lot of ideas and experience. And my ideas are implemented constructively. It is just nice to be part of this project and to be involved as BMW returns to the DTM after such a long time.”

“Are wins already a realistic goal for BMW?”MT: “We should take it one step at a time. It is difficult to judge right now, as we obviously don’t know how good the other two manufacturers are. They are also building a new car, and are bound to also have things to improve. For this reason I don’t want to go out on a limb. Whatever happens, our aim is to be competitive from the word go. Only at a later date will we be able to judge whether or not we can realistically be hoping to win races.”

“What car do you drive when you are not out on the track?”MT: “At the moment I drive a BMW 320 Diesel Touring. The car is wonderful. As a sportsman, you obviously want to check out the diversity of the BMW range. I am sure I will be road testing some different cars, as it is nice to get to know the BMW production cars too.”

“What have you got planned between now and the end of the year?”MT: “The season is gradually drawing to a close. I just have a few more dates to fulfil for my sponsors, then I hope to enjoy Christmas to the full. I will try to keep the start of January free too, so that I can switch off completely from motorsport and recharge my batteries.”

1986 BMW 325es/coupe - VIN: WBAAB5409G9689545 Black exterior/interior, sports package, 5 speed manual, six cylinder, sun roof, airdam, fog lights, power steering/win-dows/mirrors, AM/FM premium sound, cassette, 4 Zender alloys with new tires, 5 extra BMW alloys/tires, new brake rotors, pads & slave unit, 2nd owner, complete records, very clean, will email color photos and data sheet. Asking $4500. Salem, Ohio. Call: 330-332-9528 or Email: [email protected]

BOsCh Oxygen sensor - Bosch Oxygen sensor (#3108) removed from an E34 M50; from what I can tell it fits all E34 M50 motors. Sensor was removed from a 1992 525i after a failed Echeck; the problem was actually a faulty catalytic converter. Asking $25; this is an economical alternative to paying $95+ to purchase this part new. Contact: [email protected]

17” BMW Winter Wheel/Tire - ONE (1) ASA JH3 (Tire Rack) style wheel. 17”x7.5”, ET38 offset, 5x120 bolt pattern. Will fit E36 & up 3-series that can accommodate a 17” wheel (not newer M3’s). There is ONE (1) Dun-lop SP Winter Sport M3 tire mounted to the wheel, size 205/50R17 89V. After just 800 miles of driving, this wheel/tire combo sustained pothole damage. The inside of the wheel is slightly bent, and the outboard sidewall of the tire has a very small bulge. The tire still holds air, and there are no vibrations when in use. I would not recommend using this wheel/tire full time, but this would make a perfect spare for a E90/91/92 owner who is using non-Run-Flat winter tires, and wants the added security of a full size spare wheel with a winter tire mounted to it. Asking $50. Located in West Akron. [email protected]
