JUDGES

With a combined 85 years of experience in the printing industry, Tim Burton and Michael Klyn bring their loupes and trained eyes to determine who takes home Awards. These authorities on print come into town and spend two days toiling over 200 entries from companies and over 100 student entries, reviewing every detail.

Tim Burton (L) hails from Wisconsin, a proud cheese-head, now enjoying retirement with his wife Jane in Fort Meyers, Florida. Tim retired at the end of 2014, after 25 years as President of Burton & Mayer, Inc. Burton & Mayer, Inc., has been family owned and operated since 1938. It’s a traditional commercial sheet-fed and digital printer with full letterpress, bindery, fulfillment & mailing and e-commerce capabilities. Tim started out in the industry, working in the bindery department, then pre-press and in customer service. From there he held a sales position. Through the eighties, he served as Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the company before becoming the President. During his leadership days, he served as Chairman of the Printing Industries of America (PIA) Board of Directors from 2012-2013. He has volunteered as a Premier Print Awards judge since 1997 and continues to judge across the country for other affiliates of PIA.

Michael Klyn (R) is a native from the Buckeye state of Ohio, but now enjoys retirement with his wife Beverly in Cornelius, North Carolina. Michael graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1970 with a double major in history and political science. After graduation, he worked at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, a few years later, he joined the Cleveland Advertising Club as publications editor for the graphic arts community. In 1975, he joined Central Lithograph, a division of American Greetings in their sales department. Michael moved to Washington D.C., in 1978 when he accepted a position with Kiplinger Washington Editors. His final move would be to Peake DeLancey Printers in 1981, where he worked for 32 years as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing until retiring in 2012. Michael is the chairman of the judges group for PIA’s Premier Print Awards, which he has been judging for nearly 35 years.
