The Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarship program fast tracks the futures of eighty high school grad-uates with a $1,000 scholarship.

The scholarships, provided to those who complete SYA in high school and are plan-ning to enter into a skilled trade, motivate students to create a rewarding career through apprenticeship in the 47 designated trades and 23 subtrades.

“The scholarships provide financial incen-tives as well as the opportunity for students to learn more about the skilled trades,” SATCC Board Chair Garry Kot said. “They also demonstrate the collaboration between industry and the Government of Saskatch-ewan in supporting our youth and meeting

Saskatchewan’s labour market needs.”

The scholarships were initiated in 2009-10 by industry partners and the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC). To date, 39 industry partners, including business owners, labour organizations, and two provincial govern-ment agencies have contributed $951,000 to the scholarship fund.

“These students have started on their way to successful careers in the trades and we offer our congratulations on their achievements,” Minister responsible for SATCC Bill Boyd said. “This is one of the initiatives we have in place to ensure skilled trades will be available to support our province’s growing economy.”

The SATCC selects the schools that receive the SYA Industry Scholarship and the school selects the scholarship winner. To qualify for the scholarship, the graduate must complete high school and the SYA program, as well as complete one level of apprenticeship or one

year of post-secondary training in a designat-ed skilled trade.

The SYA Program enables high school stu-dents to explore career opportunities in the skilled trades and obtain hands-on experi-ence. Program participation is increasing. Currently, 278 schools are registered in the SYA Program, with over 3,700 students par-ticipating. Since the SYA Program’s inception in 2006-07, over 13,000 students in grades 10-12 have registered and over 4,200 have completed the program and received certif-icates. Of this total, 624 have registered as Saskatchewan apprentices. To date, 86 SYA participants have achieved journeyperson status. For information about the benefits of the SYA Program, or on how to contribute to the SYA Industry Scholarship Program, visit www.saskapprenticeship.ca, call 1-877-363-0536 like us on Facebook at Sask Apprenticeship or follow us on twitter @SKApprentice.

STUDENTS RECEIVE SASK YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIPS

The Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre is hosting a special artist talk and film event tonight (Wed. July 10) starting at 7 p.m. The Artist Talk will feature Samantha Davis, followed by the NFB film, “A Year at Sher-brooke.” Come and learn about Samantha’s art, as well as the art projects we are involved with at the Nursing Home and Rock Solid this summer. We will also give people details on a fall workshop with Bonnie Chapman, an artist from Regina, who has been providing consultation to us on therapeutic art.

“A Year at Sherbrooke” is a documentary that

follows two artists, Thelma Pepper and Jeff Nachtigall, as they work with the residents of Sherbrooke Community Centre, a long-term care facility in Saskatoon. As Thelma docu-ments the residents of Sherbrooke through her own portrait photography, Jeff spends close to a year as artist-in-residence, helping them make art. The film explores how cre-ativity can transform people’s lives, from the abled to the differently abled - all the while vividly demonstrating the healing power of art and community. (approx. 58 min.)

Both Jeff and Thelma have been featured art-ists at the Grand Coteau Centre art gallery in the past.

Admission by donation.

Escapee

Two golfers are waiting their turn on the tee when a naked woman runs across the fairway and into the woods.

Two men in white coats and another guy carrying two buck-ets of sand are chasing her, and a little old man is bringing up the rear.

One of the golfers grabs the old man and says, “ What’s going on?” The old guy says, “She’s a nym-phomaniac from the asylum, she keeps trying to escape, and us at-tendants are trying to catch her.”

The golfer says, “What about the guy with the buckets of sand?”

The old guy says, “That’s his handicap. He caught her last time.”

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - JULY 10

• 1962: Home phones mark their 85th anniversary. On July 10, 1877, home telephones went on sale for public use in Canada. On July 10, 1962, CBC cameras marked the home phone’s 85th anniversary at Toronto’s Bell Telephone office. Forty telephone operators are hard at work connecting lines for the city’s 850,000 subscribers. A lot has changed since the first customers signed on back in 1877. Then, only 40 Toronto-nians were willing to pay $50 a year for a phone line.

Then-prime minister Alexander Mackenzie was the first to make a commercial telephone call in Canada. At the time, technology only allowed for one house to contact one other household. On the anniversary in 1962, one of the Bell oper-ators says by 1965 the latest innovation will allow customers to dial a code for forwarding calls to another number while they are away.

• On July 26, 1874, Alexander Graham Bell invented the tele-phone in Brantford, Ont. Using a Gallow’s Frame telephone, he made the first long distance call on Aug. 10, 1876, to Paris, Ont. In June 2002, the U.S. House of Representatives disputed that Bell invented the telephone, claiming that Ital-ian immigrant Antonio Meucci tried to patent his teletrefono in 1871 but ran out of money. Bell spent 18 years in court defending his patent.

• In 1878, the first telephone exchange in the British Empire was established in Hamilton. • The Blake Wall Magneto telephone, invented by Francis Blake in 1878, was the first standard phone used in turn-of-the-century Ontario communities. It’s shape resembled mod-ern-day pay phones. The top portion had a magneto gener-ator with a hand crank to ring the operator. The mouthpiece was in the middle, and the bottom section contained a wet battery to conduct the electrical current.

• During the Great Depression in the 1930s, Bell Canada disconnected more telephones than it connected.• In 1964, telephone companies introduced Touch-Tone service. • In 1958, Dr. Kazuo Hashimoto invented ANSA FONE, the first commercial answering machine sold in North America. In 1971, Casio introduced the PhoneMate, an answering machine weighing 10 pounds and able to hold 20 messages.

Also on July 10:• 1940: The Battle of Britain begins as Nazi forces attack southern England by air. The Royal Air Force repells the 57-day assault, handing the Third Reich its first defeat and ending the threat of a German invasion of Britain.• 1946: Canada’s first drive-in theatre, the Skyway, opens in Stoney Creek, Ont. The movie is Casanova Brown, starring Gary Cooper and Theresa Wright.

• 1985: The “Rainbow Warrior,” a ship owned by the Greenpeace environmental group, is bombed and sunk at Auckland, New Zealand. Four months later, France’s defense minister resigned after it was reported he knew that French agents planted the bomb.

There are two kinds of friends : those who are around when you need them, and those who are around when they need you.

A celebrity is someone who works hard all his life to become known and then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognised.

Employee of the month is a good example of how somebody can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

We can’t all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the sidelines and clap as they go by.

Look people I don’t like exercise so I’m not going to walk a mile in your shoes. I’ll judge you standing right here.

TWO DAYS ONLY!

Saskatchewan has designated a new protected area nearly two-thirds the size of Prince Edward Island. The Pink Lake Representative Area Ecological Reserve, located 160 kilometres north of La Ronge, is now Saskatchewan’s largest provincially-designated protected area of approximately 3,660 square kilometres. Compared to all other protected lands in the province, only Prince Albert National Park is larger at 3,874 square kilometres. “The Pink Lake area covers a vast area of boreal forest which provides important habitat for many species including woodland caribou,” Envi-ronment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. “The designation will help conserve this ecologically import-ant area, while adding significantly

to Saskatchewan’s Representative Areas Network.” Saskatchewan launched the Representative Areas Network in 1997 to conserve representative or unique examples of landscapes across Saskatchewan, with a target of protecting 12 per cent of each of the province’s 11 ecoregions. With the Pink Lake designation, repre-sentation in the Churchill River Upland Ecoregion increases from 4.9 to 8.2 per cent of the total area. Saskatchewan’s Representative Ar-eas Network includes approximately 6.1 million hectares, or just over 9.0 per cent of the province. Designation as an ecological re-serve means that no new industrial developments will be allowed in the area. No new leases or permits will be issued but those in place

at the time of the designation will be grandfathered to allow existing activities to continue. Traditional activities by First Nations and Métis people, as well as recreational hunt-ing and angling, will continue. “Half of our beautiful province is forest,” Cheveldayoff said. “A strong, healthy boreal ecoregion will continue to serve all residents, visitors and our industry partners now and for decades to come.” The Pink Lake Representative Area Ecological Reserve was pro-posed as part of the Misinipiy Inte-grated Land Use Plan, developed in partnership with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band with extensive public and stakeholder involvement. The land use plan was approved in May 2012.

NEW ECOLOGICAL RESERVE IS SASKATCHEWAN’S LARGEST
