THE SHAUNAVON KIN CLUB is desperate-ly hoping to attract some new members and if volunteers don’t step forward soon the club will have to fold. “Right now we only have four Kinette mem-bers,” said Kinette president Cori Davidson. “It’s pretty hard to take on fundraising proj-ects of any kind with just four people.” Davidson says the club could fold if members don’t step forward soon. Not only would that mean the end of a long history of Kin involvement in the community, but it could also have some significant finan-cial implications as well. The Kin Club has been setting aside funds from annual grants they receive from Sask Lotteries. The money, which has been ear-
marked towards a splash park being spear-headed by the Kin Club, now totals about $45,000. However, if the Kin club is forced to disband, those funds could be lost because the money is in trust with Sask Lotteries and earmarked for the Spray Park. “It’s definitely something we don’t want to see happen,” said Davidson. Another big Kin project could also be in jeopardy. Without more volunteer support, the Kin Club may be forced to cancel its annual Radiothon, a decades-old tradition that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Kinsmen Foundation over the years. “Right now, that’s really the only other proj-

ect that we’re planning this year,” said David-son. “But if we can’t get people to help, then we might not be able to do it.” Held in mid February each year, the Radio-thon, is one of the community’s biggest and longest-running fundraisers. “The great thing about the Radiothon and Telemiracle is that the money goes to people who really need help,” said Davidson. “And money that has been raised from the event has been used by people living right here in our area.” The Kinsmen and Kinettes have a history in the community that actually dates back to the early 1960s. The Kinsmen flourished for many years and was at one time a vibrant entity that spear-headed a variety of programs and projects. However, several years ago the club became inactive as membership dwindled. The Kinettes, meanwhile, have been much more active than their male counterparts over the past decade or so, although it has also en-dured some membership highs and lows. “At one time we had a very active club and it was a big part of ours lives and the communi-ty,” said Terry Fritz, who was a member of the Shaunavon Kinettes starting in the late 1970s. “It was a lot of fun, too and I met a lot of great people. Telemiracle is an amazing event and if I was someone looking to become a Kinette now, I would join just for that reason alone. But there are a lot of other great reasons to become a Kinette, too.” Last year the two groups (Kinsmen and Kinettes) amalgamated into a Kin Club in an effort to save the service group. The new club, which welcomes both male and female members, offers a wide selection of benefits and rewards to anyone interested in joining the organization. Club members enjoy some great camara-derie and fellowship, all while benefiting their community. “Everything we do is focused on helping the community,” said Davidson. Those interested in becoming a member of the Shaunavon Kin Club, or who just want to volunteer to help with the Radiothon, can contact Cori Davidson at 306-297-2327 after 5 p.m. The other three Kin Club members include Suzanne Stearns (vice-president), Bobbi Jo Smith (secretary) and Colleen Meinert (trea-surer).
PRESCRIPTIVE POWERS OF PHAR-MACISTS CONCERN SOME DOC-TORScbc.ca - There is a debate brewing about who should prescribe certain drugs in Sas-katchewan. In the past year, patients have been able to get some prescriptions from pharmacists, which included medication for acne, cold sores, rashes and other minor conditions. What conditions can pharmacists pre-scribe medication for: • Minor acne• Insect bites• Cold sores• Allergic rhinitis• Oral thrush• Diaper rash• Canker sores The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan met today and one of the items on its agenda was the prescriptive au-thority for pharmacists. While many doc-tors do not have an issue with pharmacists handing out some prescriptions, there are concerns raised as well. “I don’t see how a busy, community phar-macist, who is counselling patients on pre-scriptions they give them have time to sit with the patient, take a history, do an exam, and then go and prescribe something,” said Dr. Mark Chapelski, president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Sas-katchewan, adding that protecting people is the biggest concern. He agrees with pharmacists prescribing drugs for minor conditions but he’s con-cerned about patients diagnosing them-selves. “This definition of self-limited illness,” he said. “They’re talking about some rashes being self-limited illnesses, yet our derma-tology colleagues go to school for 12 years to be able to diagnose these rashes.”

It’s always about the money. The big business of professional sports has meant frequent battles between players and owners for a piece of the multimillion-dollar pie. The 2004 hockey lockout was the first in a decade, but over the years sports labour disputes have plagued profes-sional football, baseball, basketball and hockey — resulting in short-ened seasons and furious fans. It’s opening night in the National Hockey League... more than three months late. An extended lockout -- the longest disruption in league history at that point -- had raised the spectre of losing the 1994-95 hockey season. With a new collective agreement in hand, NHL players are back on the ice tonight, and fans are back in the seats (and at the concession stands). The return of hockey, albeit for an abbreviated sea-son, has executives and players excited.• The 1994-95 lockout began on Oct. 1, 1994, the day the regular sea-son was to have begun. A key area of dispute was the NHL’s efforts to impose a “tax” -- a penalty levied by the league -- on salaries that were higher than the average. The NHLPA viewed it as a variation on a salary cap and flatly refused to consider it.
• On Jan. 11, 1995, with a deadline that would have wiped out the entire season fast approaching, an agreement was reached. • The National Hockey League Players’ Association and team owners agreed to play a shortened season of 48 games -- the shortest in 53 years, and with no inter-conference games. (The 1995 collective agreement set a regular season at 82 games, down from 84 in the previous agreement.)• The lockout had lasted 103 days and caused 468 games to be cancelled. Play resumed on Jan. 20.• In 1993-94 the average salary of an NHL player was $572,000 -- double the average just five years earlier.• That season, 75 players (out of more than 500) made $1 million or more per season, up from three such players in 1988-89.• Both sides gave up something to reach the settlement. NHL owners with-drew their proposal for a salary tax. The players allowed a salary cap for rookies, but won unrestricted free agency for players age 32 and over (very few players had careers long enough to take advantage of it). Owners be-lieved these provisions would keep player salaries in check.• “Free agency” is the ability of players to sell their services on an open mar-ket. After their contracts with a team expire, free agents have the freedom to sign on with the highest bidder. • Of the 26 team owners, 19 voted in favour of the players’ offer while seven strongly opposed it. The opponents, characterized as “hawks,” felt the point of the lockout was to limit player salaries and link them with revenues, and this had not been achieved.• For its part, the NHL soon launched a promotion-al campaign aimed at luring back angered fans. The campaign’s slogan was “Game On.” League atten-dance returned to previous levels, and continued to grow.• The 1994-95 lockout came on the heels of a mile-stone hockey strike just two years earlier. Players walked out on April 1, 1992, interrupting the race for the Stanley Cup. The dispute, focusing on sala-ries, free agency and licensing player images, was the first in the league’s 75 years. After several days of negotiations, including a final marathon session, the impasse was resolved on April 10. Thirty games were postponed because of the strike.• The most devastating professional hockey labour dispute came in 2004-05. The main issue was the league’s proposal of a controversial salary cap, which was firmly rejected by the players’ union. After five months of very public labour negotiations, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman cancelled the season. The NHL became the only major North American professional sports league in history to lose an entire season to a labour dispute. It was the first time since 1919 that the Stanley Cup was not awarded.

The boss of a big company needed to call one of his employees about an urgent problem with one of the main computers. He dialed the employee’s home phone number and was greeted
with a child’s whispered, “Hello?”Feeling put out at the inconvenience of having to talk to a
youngster the boss asked, “Is your Daddy home?”“Yes,” whispered the small voice.
“May I talk with him?” the man asked. To the surprise of the boss, the small voice whispered, “No.”
Wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, “Is your Mommy there?”“Yes”, came the answer.“May I talk with her?”
Again the small voice whispered, “No”.Knowing that it was not likely that a young child would be left
home alone, the boss decided he would just leave a message with the person who should be there watching over the child.“Is there anyone there besides you?” the boss asked the child.
“Yes” whispered the child, “A policeman.”Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee’s home,
the boss asked, “May I speak with the policeman?”“No, he’s busy,” whispered the child.“Busy doing what?” asked the boss.
Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the fireman,” came the whispered answer.
Growing concerned and even worried as he heard what sound-ed like a helicopter through the ear piece on the phone the boss
asked, “What is that noise?”“A hello-copper,” answered the whispering voice.
“What is going on there?” asked the boss, now alarmed. In an awed whispering voice the child answered, “The search
team just landed the hello-copper.”Alarmed, concerned and more than just a little frustrated, the
boss asked, “Why are they there?”Still whispering, the young voice replied along with a muffled
giggle, “They’re looking for me.”

Ol’ Fred had been a faithful Christian and was in the hospital, near death. The family called
their preacher to stand with them.
As the preacher stood next to the bed, Ol’ Fred’s condition appeared to deteriorate and he
motioned frantically for something to write on.
The pastor lovingly handed him a pen and a piece of paper, and Ol’ Fred used his last bit of energy to scribble a note, then suddenly died.
The preacher thought it best not to look at the note at that time, so he placed it in
his jacket pocket.
At the funeral, as he was finishing the message, he realized that he was wearing the same jacket
that he was wearing when Ol’ Freddied. He said, “You know, Ol’ Fred handed me
a note just before he died. I haven’t looked at it, but knowing Fred, I’m sure
there’s a word of inspiration there for us all.”
He opened the note, and read, “Please step to your left -- you’re standing on my oxygen tube!”
