• Read and learn from pictures (nonfiction)

• Book handling

It’s all about the alphabet...

• Letters make sounds

• Sounds make words

Its all about the words...

• Common words

• Sounding out words

• Rhyming words

• Word families

Putting it all together…

In order to write we need to strengthen the small muscles of the hand.

Fine muscle control is strengthened through the use of manipulative materials such as:ScissorsPencils, crayons, markerspaint brushespuzzlesPlay-Doh

Mathematics

SKILLS FOR KINDERGARTEN

Page 32: The 2014 P.S./I.S. 102Q Kindergarten Orientation

WHAT IS ARITHMETIC?Arithmetic is used for computation with

numbers, e.g. “2+2=4”

Arithmetic provides the basic skills necessary to do math.

Calculations can be used to solve every problem in arithmetic.

Page 33: The 2014 P.S./I.S. 102Q Kindergarten Orientation

WHAT IS MATHEMATICS?Mathematics is about, thinking, reasoning, & making

sense of the real world.

Mathematics is about problem solving.

Calculations cannot replace a brain that learns to make mathematical connections & learns to reason objectively.

Page 34: The 2014 P.S./I.S. 102Q Kindergarten Orientation

HOW TO ENCOURAGE MATHEMATICAL THINKING1. Use Language. There is no language in 2+2, but there is

language in our daily lives & the mathematical problems we solve, e.g., “I have 2 hands and you have 2 hands. How many hands do we have altogether?”

2. Reason about Mathematical Concepts. “If there are 3 cookies and I eat 1, will there be more or less cookies? Can you explain why?”

3. Develop Logical Thinking. “Mr. Squirrel is hiding nuts for the winter. He hid fewer than 10 nuts, but more than 7 nuts. He didn’t hide 9 nuts, so how many nuts did he hide?”

Page 35: The 2014 P.S./I.S. 102Q Kindergarten Orientation

HOW TO ENCOURAGE MATHEMATICAL THINKING4. Find Math in Every Day Things You Do:

• Using money• Counting• Sorting/Categorizing• Finding patterns• Recognizing size and measurements• Comparing size, quantity, measurement• Shopping• Cooking• Telling time, measuring time.

5. Talk to Your Child. The child who develops language & thinking skills, in any language easily transfers those into English.
