Some of the topics covered in first grode ata-i T2sling ond writing numbers, ploce vqlue (10s ond 1s), some bosic frqctions, money, oddition ond subtroction focts, foct fomilies, problem solving numbers, tally morks, ond shopes. They'll perform mqth independently, in smolt groups ond with the whole closs. A Bolonced Approoch to Literacy Students receive direct reoding instruction in comprehension , fluency, ond word study. Students select their own books from the clqss librory, which contoins o voriety of genres. We use the Fundotions reoding progrom for word study. Students get individuol instrr.tion during reoding conf erences, qnd small group reading instruction during guided reoding. We olso teoch reoding comprehension strotegies through shored reoding ond doily reod olouds. Students reod independently everydoy with the gool of buildingtheir reoding stomino to twenty minutes. First grade students focus on decoding, developing their reading f luency ond comprehension. They are encou?dged to reod silently but their "reoding voices" should sound smooth ond expressive to reflect the meoning of the text.
