The 2 Beasts we will face before the End

Leviathan and Behemoth in Revelation 13

2 Beasts of Revelation 13• Beast #1 the Kingdom of Satan on earth - I saw a beast rising up out

of the sea. It had seven heads and ten horns, with ten crowns on its horns. And written on each head were names that blasphemed God. This beast looked like a leopard, but it had the feet of a bear and the mouth of a lion! And the dragon gave the beast his own power and throne and great authority. I saw that one of the heads of the beast seemed wounded beyond recovery—but the fatal wound was healed! The whole world marveled at this miracle and gave allegiance to the beast. They worshiped the dragon for giving the beast such power, and they also worshiped the beast. “Who is as great as the beast?” they exclaimed. “Who is able to fight against him?” Then the beast was allowed to speak great blasphemies against God. And he was given authority to do whatever he wanted for forty-two months.

2 Beasts of Revelation 13• Beast #2 his False Prophet - Then I saw another beast come up out

of the earth. He had two horns like those of a lamb, but he spoke with the voice of a dragon. He exercised all the authority of the first beast. And he required all the earth and its people to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. He did astounding miracles, even making fire flash down to earth from the sky while everyone was watching. And with all the miracles he was allowed to perform on behalf of the first beast, he deceived all the people who belong to this world. He ordered the people to make a great statue of the first beast, who was fatally wounded and then came back to life. He was then permitted to give life to this statue so that it could speak. Then the statue of the beast commanded that anyone refusing to worship it must die.

Leviathan: Beast from the Sea• John alludes to Leviathan in Rev. 12 with sea monster/serpent/

dragon imagery: “Then the dragon tried to drown the woman with a flood of water that flowed from his mouth…And the dragon was angry at the woman and declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and maintain their testimony for Jesus. Then the dragon took his stand on the shore beside the sea.”

• This is the (only) time Satan’s Kingdom is permitted to “rise” in full view like every other nation on earth. He will coalesce all previous attempts at kingdoms (Egypt through the Caliphate) to finally exterminate the Jews and the Church. This chaotic rage of Satan/the Serpent/the Dragon has likely been in the Old Testament all along.

Leviathan: Beast from the Sea• Job 3:8 - Let those who curse the day curse it - those who are

prepared to rouse Leviathan.

• Job 41 - Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook or tie his tongue down with a rope? Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook? Will he beg you for mercy or speak softly to you? Will he make a covenant with you so that you can take him as a slave forever? Lay a hand on him. You will remember the battle and never repeat it! Any hope of capturing him proves false. No one is ferocious enough to rouse Leviathan; who then can stand against me?

Leviathan: Beast from the Sea• Job 41 continued - When Leviathan rises, the mighty are

terrified; they withdraw because of his thrashing. The sword that reaches him will have no effect…He regards iron as straw, And bronze as rotten wood…On earth there is nothing like him, Which is made without fear. He beholds every high thing; He is king over all the children of pride.

• Psalm 74 - It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.

Leviathan: Beast from the Sea• Isaiah 26,27 - Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake

and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For you will be covered with the morning dew, and the earth will bring out the departed spirits. Go, my people, enter your rooms and close your doors behind you. Hide for a little while until the wrath has passed. For look, the LORD is coming from his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth will reveal the blood shed on it and will no longer conceal her slain. In that day the LORD will take his terrible, swift sword and punish Leviathan, the swiftly moving serpent, the coiling, writhing serpent. He will kill the dragon of the sea…

Leviathan: Beast from the Sea• Isaiah 27 continued - In that day, sing about the fruitful

vineyard. I, the LORD, will watch over it, watering it carefully. Day and night I will watch so no one can harm it. My anger will be gone…The time is coming when Jacob’s descendants will take root…the time will come when the LORD will gather them together like handpicked grain. One by one he will gather them—from the Euphrates River in the east to the Brook of Egypt in the west. In that day the great trumpet will sound. Many who were dying in exile in Assyria and Egypt will return to Jerusalem to worship the LORD on his holy mountain.

Behemoth: Beast from the Earth• Job 40 - Behold, Behemoth, which I made as well as you; He

eats grass like an ox. Behold, his strength in his waist, And his power in the muscles of his belly. He hangs his tail like a cedar; he tendons of his thighs are knit together. His bones are tubes of bronze; His limbs are like bars of iron. He is the first of the ways of God; Let his Maker bring His sword near. Indeed the mountains bring him food. And all the animals of the field play there He lies down under the lotus plants, In the hiding place of the reeds and the marsh. The lotus plants cover him with shade. The willows of the brook surround him. If a river rages, he is not alarmed; He is confident, though the Jordan rushes to his mouth. Can anyone capture him when he is on watch, Can anyone pierce his nose with barbs?

Enoch: another Witness• I saw that the heaven of heavens shook; that it shook violently; and that the powers

of the Most High, and the angels, thousands and thousands, and myriads of myriads, were agitated with great agitation. And when I looked, the Ancient of days was sitting on the throne of his glory, while the angels and saints were standing around him...Then holy Michael said to me, Why are you disturbed at this vision? Hitherto has existed the day of mercy; and he has been merciful and longsuffering towards all who dwell upon the earth. But when the time shall come, then [shall] the power, the punishment, and the judgment…That day has been prepared for the elect [as a day of] covenant; and for sinners [as a day of] inquisition. In that day shall be separated from one another two monsters; a female monster, whose name is Leviathan, dwelling in the depths of the sea, above the springs of waters; And a male monster, whose name is Behemoth; which possesses, [moving] on his breast, the invisible wilderness; Dendayen in the east of the garden, where the elect and the righteous will dwell…Then I asked of another angel to show me the power of those monsters, how they became separated, how they became separated on the same day, one [being] in the depths of the sea, and one in the dry desert. And he said, You, son of man, are here desirous of understanding secret things. And the angel of peace, who was with me, said, These two monsters are by the power of God prepared to become food, that the punishment of God may not be in vain. - 1 Enoch 58

Enoch: another Witness• Per M. Heiser in “Demons”: The passage clearly considers

Behemoth as the land (desert) counterpart of the chaos monster Leviathan. This sea-land pairing of twin chaos forces is implicit in Job 40:15–41:34 and continues well into rabbinic literature. Behemoth occupies “an invisible desert” called Dundayin. Nickelsburg and VanderKam note that the spelling of this place varies in the manuscript data and they “indicate a connection with the reading ‘Doudael’ in 1 Enoch 10:4 .” This was the pit in the place of jagged rocks (Dudael/ Dudaʾel ) where Azazel was cast and imprisoned.

Behemoth: Beast from the Earth

• If Behemoth -> Azazel -> kept in an invisible place in the earth, this would make the False Prophet truly unique and possibly not even a human being. Certainly not a existing human religious leader as commonly taught.

• Also sobering considering what the “first Woe/5th Trumpet” will bring - an army of supernatural “locusts” (Rev. 9:1-12) led by this same “beast from the earth”.

Behemoth: Beast from the Earth

• We are told this False Prophet “did astounding miracles”. Described by Paul as “counterfeit power and signs and miracles”. And as Jesus said, “great signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.”

• We must guard our hearts and minds against all pride, arrogance and assumption when preparing to face these Beasts - Satan is ready to take advantage of it.

Before the End, we will face these 2 Beasts

• These details are given to us in God’s Word for our benefit. Let us prayerfully digest and apply and teach them to fellow Christians in all our churches.

• And we know, when their time is up, King Yeshua is coming HIMSELF to judge and wage war against these enemies. And at that great last trumpet, we will be resurrected and the judgment will be made in our favor, and the true Kingdom will be given to us!
