The 1970 Volvo 1800 E has a familiar appearance. With a lot of differences where it counts.

This year's model has a different engine. It's fuel injected. And a different four-speed transmission with electric over-drive, and a different four-wheel discbrake system.

Plus a lot of other thoroughly testeddifferences designed to hold up underSwedish driving conditions. So that own-ing an 1800 E will let you put money inthe bank. Rather than the repair shop.

Technically, the B20 E engine is electronically fuel injected.Mechanically, it's still a Volvo.

When Volvo engineers began designingthe 2-litre engine, fuel injection wasavailable for temperamental grand prixrace cars, and electronic computerscost just about as much. Eight yearslater the unlikely merger of race cardevelopment and space age technologyhas produced the electronic computercontrolled fuel injected B20E engine.

What it means is no carburetors. If you guessed that it's more powerful

with fuel injection, you're right. TheVolvo 1800 E develops 130 horsepowerat 6000 r.p.m. That's 10 % increase.It's also smoother running and moreefficient.

The reason is that the engine is al-ways getting an exactly proportionedfuel supply directly into the cylinders.Regardless of the weather, engine speedor altitude.

speed fully synchronized gearbox that'seven tougher. That's because it was de-signed for our six-cylinder engine. Itencourages fast shifts. But because thegearing is closely matched to the en-gine's torque curve a lot of shifting isunnecessary.

One thing that isn't different this yearis electric overdrive. That was a newunit last year. And, of course, it's stan-dard. As it should be on a grand touringcar.

Since the 1800E is Volvo's fastest carit's also our best stopping car. With over400 square inches of four wheel powerassisted disc brakes. And hydraulicpressure limiting valves for the rearwheels for straight line emergencystops. Plus Volvo's emergency dualbrake system that has three wheelsoperating on each circuit.

The rest of the engine is conventionalVolvo. Which means a rugged five mainbearing crankshaft, fully machinedcombustion chambers and a long wear-ing overhead valve system.

Road & Track magazine, analyzing, the results of a Volvo owner's surveysaid, "We're going to project 110,000miles as an average life between over-hauls." They were referring to Volvo'sold engine. The B20E was designed thesame way, strong.

Backing up this powerplant is a four-

And it's Volvo best handling car. Newhigh speed radial tires are standard onnew aluminum alloy wheels with steelrims. With a competition proved sus-pension that soaks up rough roads theway it eats up fast bends.

And more than anything else the1800E is a Volvo. Rigid unit construc-tion, double underseal, three primercoats of paint and three color coats.

Just because it's Volvo's most diffe-rent car is no reason to build it anydifferently.

Comfort is standard equipment. It's not something you have to pretend.

If you think a sports car has to becramped, noisy and uncomfortable; un-bearable in the summer and uninhabi-table in the winter, you're wrong.

Guess again if you have the impres-sion that a sports car is fragile and

temperamental . A collection of rattlesand repair bills. The 1800 E is none of these things. Ithas a full size interior. Loads of room. There's fully adjustable leather bucketseats. It's easy driving with a floormounted quick shifter sprouting from acenter console. All new instrumenta-tion. Properly placed pedals. A fresh airheating system designed for a stationwagon ... matched with a new flow

through ventilation system. And option-al air conditioning (the tinted glass isstandard).

Also included are a lot of small butvery important features. Nice toucheslike electric rear window defrosting.Complete carpeting and a fold downjump seat. Adjustable headrests andfull width sun visors. A tinted glass mir-ror outside and an anti-glare mirror in-side.

And, the 1800 E is build to last a longtime. Like a Volvo. It's also built for tour-ing in the grand way. Meaning you'renot cramped for space. So you don't haveto pretend to be comfortable. You are.

The 1800 E is a special Volvo.Included are some special features.

Under this positive engagement shift lever isVolvo's beefiest transmission. Four speeds. Fullysynchronized.

High speed radial ply tires are standard. So arebig fifteen-inch wheels, wider this year.

Disc brakes on all four wheels with separatedrums for the handbrake. And Volvo's three-wheeldual brake system.

The 1800E is for all seasons. Electric rear win-dow defrosting takes care of winter worries.

For any season, interior ventilation is a must.Forget about stale air, it exits through these vents.

One more speed. Electric overdrive lets the 1800Ego faster while the engine goes slower. Just flickthe lever.

The trunk hold, what many sports car trunksdon't hold, a sensible amount of luggage.

What the generous sized trunk won't hold youcan stow behind the seats.

New and very convenient. A locking center con-sole for everything but maps. For those there arepockets tinder the dash.
