The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evansWe LikeA buddy of mine put a fly fishing rod in my handsthis week, and I can’t stop thinking about it.Swimming out to the rocks down at WaterworksPark and standing there for hours casting is some-thing I can see myself doing a lot this summer. The180-acre park has also expanded their hours and isnow open Wed - Sunday 9am-7pm. AmersonWater Works Park is an extraordinary piece ofproperty with two miles of river frontage and a mix-ture of undeveloped forests, meadows, and wet-lands. It has several high bluffs overlooking theriver that provide some of the most dramatic viewsin this area. You should definitely spend lots oftime their this spring. Turkey season also startsthis week. Some friends and I are headed out toOaky Woods this coming weekend for aTurkey/Hog Hunt at a relatives hunting camp and

I’m hoping for my first Gobbler, and certainly awooly hog or two.

I’m really not much forpopular fiction. I’ve beenon a history kick for toomany months to countlately, so I know I’m late tothe ballgame on theDragon Tattoo Books. But damn, if you can getthe names straight theycan provide you some funrides throughout the coming beach months.

I’ve listed Rodeo Beach in this column before asbeing one of the coolest stores in Macon.

Obviously, many of you agree since you votedthem the best local store in Macon at this year’sReaders Choice Awards. I’ve known the galsthere for a while, but they took me out to dinnerlast week and I made some new friends, somethingI’m not really good at doing. If you haven’t checkedthe store out, I guarantee you that they have some-thing you will want in there, if you like the outdoors.

We’ve not made any sort of formal announcement, haven’t really posted a bunch of ultrasound photoson Facespace or anything, it’s just really not ourstyle. But those that know us know that my wifeMeg is pregnant. Fifteen weeks in, it’s just about allwe can do to keep from smiling every time we lookat each other. And that is something I like morethan anything right now.

As some of you remember whenthe 11th Hour first got toMacon, one of our first “Oh

Crap” moments came when the BoardChair of Cherry Blossom prevented usfrom being a media sponsor for the fes-tival because she was also publisher ofthe Telegraph. She went as far as writ-ing all the non-profits in the area letters, which we have copies of, telling themthat if they supported us, they would notbe supported by the Telegraph.

We made a little stink about it, pub-lishing the letter she wrote to the non-profits, and in many ways the incidentwas a big reason why folks started tak-ing us seriously. Now we get along withthe Telegraph just fine, as well as theirnew publisher, and we’ve worked sideby side with Cherry Blossom since.

This year, I was asked to come onboard to help put together the streetparty and had the great pleasure of get-ting to know Ms. Karen Lambert in theprocess. I’d known Karen through hertour at the Grand Opera House, and Ithink she’s done a great job holding thereins of Macon’s largest Festival. Last

year’s street party was a line up out ofthis world, if only the weather wouldhave cooperated, it would have been thebiggest ever, and I think this year mightjust be yet. (Only a 30% chance of rainso far.)

But once all the free ice cream iseaten and Cherry Blossom is over, Ms.Lambert takes on an even bigger chal-lenge, filling her mother’s shoes at thePeyton Anderson Foundation. Lordknows where this city would be if itweren’t for grant money, and folks likeThe Community Foundation, TheKnight Foundation, and PeytonAnderson have kept this town on therise for as many years as I’ve been here.Ms. Juanita Jordan, Karen’s mom, hasbeen featured on the cover of our maga-zine as one of the most powerful womenin Macon, doling out funds that helpsome of the most important organiza-tions in our community. I don’t thinkthere is a better person to fill those shoesthan Karen, especially after witnessingher work during this bear of a festival. So to Ms. Juanita, thank you, and to Ms.Karen, Good Luck!

15DAYSARTS AND CULTURE

Multi-Media Concert Comes to MaconBlack Swan Violinist Tim Fain to perform at Wesleyan College

It's hard to contain my excitement about all the wonder-ful things happening in our local creative community.Films are being made here. The new community sup-

ported art program from The 567 Center for Renewal andMacon Arts Alliance just announced this year's crop offive Bibb County artists. The 7th Annual Fired WorksRegional Ceramics Exhibition and Sale is now thelargest exhibition of sculptural and functional pottery inGeorgia. All these things demonstrate how the creativeeconomy of central Georgia is growing and changing.Luckily, the changes are only for the better.

Another incredible event that will be taking placesoon is the presentation of "Portals" at Porter Auditoriumat Wesleyan College by the Macon Concert Association onApril 25. “Portals” is a monumental undertaking by ourlocal concert association. It is also a fine example of thehigh level of cultural riches that Macon has to offer.

"Portals" features violinist Tim Fain, as seen in “BlackSwan,” performing original work by American composerPhillip Glass along with videos directed by Kate Hackettand Phillip Millepied, choreographer for "Black Swan."

"Portals" is like no concert you have ever seenbefore. Fain stands alone on stage in front of a large screenwith a series of films on display. Those films feature spo-ken word, dance and musicians interacting with thesoloist, who is live on stage. At points, Fain is even har-monizing with himself during the show.

Hackett, director and producer of the films, said thatthe video aspect of the show can be divided into threetiers. The first tier is a group spoken word films with anarrator. These include glimpses of Fain, Glass and others

working together and collaborating online on the “Portals”project. The spoken word films also feature readings of thepoetry of Leonard Cohen and were made to look as if theyare self-recorded on a cell phone or webcam.

The second tier is comprised of concerthall footage of Tim collaborating with himselfand with a pianist in a concert hall. Thesefilms function like music videos and allowFain harmonize with himself and concertizewith a pianist who is not even in the sameroom with him or the audience. They are themost polished of the films.

According to Hackett, Fain wanted thefilms to compliment the performance and tocreate a heightened level of intimacy. Thespoken word films were to give the audiencea sense of what it is like to be involved in theartistic process. He wanted to convey the feeling of beingin a concert hall from the artist's point of view through theuse of documentary-style footage.

Fain also wanted to showcase new, American com-posers. For this reason, he will be performing an originalscore by Phillip Glass, called "Partitia for Solo Violin"which was written for the renowned violinist.

Fain also had a loftier goal–to capture the isolationthat results as a byproduct of the ways people now com-municate in the digital age. According to Hackett, this con-cert and its concepts are "all very much Tim's baby."

Early reviews of "Portals" have been spectacular.Vanity Fair said, “Violinist Tim Fain plays like a virtuosoand thinks like a cinematographer. The show, Portals, is a

smart mix of sound and vision for the Facebook visionwho love Bjork and Beethoven with equal ardor.”

The New York Times called “Portals” an “ingeniouslypractical show that Fain can take ontour, unencumbered by much morethan a laptop. His goal is to find newways to frame the music, and in thathe succeeded admirably.”

It's exciting to see nationally-renowned performances coming toMacon. It's great to see films beingmade in Macon and to see excitingnew programs like "CommunitySupported Art: Macon" being devel-oped. It's great to a see a local exhibitlike Fired Works grow into the largestsuch exhibit in the state. Arts and cul-

tural offerings in the mid-state are better than ever before."Portals" is April 25 at Porter Auditorium at

Wesleyan College. Visit portalsproject.com for tickets.Fired Works is April 14-22 in Central City Park, with thespectacular preview party on Friday, April 13. Visit fired-worksmacon.com for tickets. Community Supported Art:Macon is underway now. Visit the567.org for informationon the selected artists and to purchase shares.

Jonathan Dye is the Director of Communications forMacon Arts Alliance, a non-profit organization comprisedof more than 60 arts and cultural organizations through-out central Georgia. Visit www.maconartsalliance.org formore information.

Lord T & EloiseHave you heard the one about the preacher and the rabbi who walk into

a room? Unfortunately, it’s not just a bad joke. Georgia’s AttorneyGeneral has determined that two members of Macon City Council

violated the state’s Open Meetings Act (although the Telegraph buried thatfact inside a Saturday edition). Some might think of laws that require openmeetings and open records to be nothing more than a nuisance but ourAttorney General has already shown he means business in ensuring that elect-ed officials follow the law when we transact the public’s business. He foundthat the Savannah City Council violated the law and the only reason he did-n’t censure or fine them was because they acted on the misguided instructionsof their City Attorney. The Attorney General also recently warned BibbCounty’s School Superintendent when he announced plans for successivemeetings in order to circumvent the law. The meetings were cancelled.

City Council’s Committee on Committees is extremely powerful butonly for about 48 hours every four years. It is comprised of the newly-elect-ed President and President Pro Tempore, as well as a third Council member(who is not serving in a city-wide position) elected by his/her peers. Afterasking all Council members to write their committee preferences in rankedorder, this small committee meets to decide who sits on which committee atthe beginning of each four-year term. There are six standing committeesrequiring five members each, so that appointment power is exercised in 30separate instances. Because there are only three members, any two constitutea quorum and thus are prohibited from meeting without public notice. It isimportant to note that the law does not say they can’t meet for the purposesof their deliberations; it merely says they cannot meet in a quorum withoutpublic notice.

When the Committee on Committees met to transact its business inDecember, President Timley offered to distribute a printed list of all Councilmembers’ committee preferences. The other two members, Schlesinger andJones, said they had no need to see them. In other words, in their arrogancethey didn’t care what our wishes were. They then each handed over a printedlist of their suggested committee assignments. Of 30 slots, their two lists dif-fered in only one. I’m not a mathematician but I’d wager the odds of having29 out of 30 be an exact match are pretty slim. Timley then voiced his strongsuspicions that the two of them had met previously and they admitted theyhad done so. In fact, Keith Moffett from the Mayor’s office admitted that theyhad met with him and the Mayor just the day before. Their later explanationwas that, as members of the clergy, they often meet as friends.

The next day, the Macon Telegraph accurately reported what transpiredat the meeting. The Attorney General’s office saw the story and called tomake sure it was reported correctly. When it was confirmed, the AG’s officeasked the City Attorney to gather the facts and submit them without a legalconclusion. The Council President also later submitted a copy of the audiotape of the meeting in which the non-public meetings were admitted.

The Attorney General then issued amemorandum of understanding which heasked that Schlesinger and Jones sign. The memo states, “council membersCharles Jones and LarrySchlesinger…met one or more times inprivate…without notice or agenda ascalled for by Georgia’s Open MeetingsAct and they were not made open to thepublic nor voluntarily disclosed to thepublic.” After laying out the chain ofevents, the memo then officially states,

“the Attorney General believes that themeetings on or before December 10,2011 by council members Charles Jonesand Larry Schlesinger were meetingsgoverned by Georgia’s Open MeetingsAct and that so meeting in private with-out notice and agenda would constituteone or more violations of the Act.”

The Attorney General took anextraordinary step to require that themeeting of the Committee onCommittees meet again to reconsider itsearlier tainted action. He also requiredtraining for Jones and Schlesinger as wellas all members of Council to reviewGeorgia’s Open Meetings Act. Takingnote that the two members deny anywrongdoing, the Attorney General gener-ously did not require them to admit guiltbut did require their signature on thememo receiving their assurance that theywill not violate the law in the future. Infact, the AG’s office will monitor theiractions for one year and reserves the right“to bring legal action for violation of thisagreement or for the violations alleged inthis agreement within 90 days after theend of that period.” Even with such a gen-erous offer by the Attorney General, thetwo have refused to sign. The rumor isthat they are betting the AttorneyGeneral’s understaffed offices will nothave the resources to pursue the matter.

Someone suggested to me that thetwo disagree with the law. The next timeI’m stopped for speeding on I-75, I thinkI’ll tell the officer I disagree with speedlimits and see how far that gets me.Maybe I’ll even ignore the ticket hoping itwill get lost in the administrative shuffle;that seems to be the position ofSchlesinger and Jones. As one friend saidto me, “I would have expected more fromtwo clergymen.” Wouldn’t we all?

FRIDAY, MAR 23Dead Confederate, St. Francis &Packway Handle Band @ CoxCapitol Theatre A night of great Athens music. DeadConfederate is a loud buzz with lots ofindustry buzz. St. Francis, fronted byMaconite Scott Baston brings his supergroup back to a Macon stage after mov-ing to Athens a year ago and bluegrassrockers, Packway Handle Band alwaysreceive a warm welcome here. A nightfilled with fantastic music!

SATURDAY, MAR 24Street Party in Downtown Macon Rodney Atkins has had six number onehits from his first three albums, from"Watching You" and "These Are MyPeople" to his most recent smashes,"Take A Back Road," and "Farmer'sDaughter," (which quickly skyrocketed toplatinum,) and he's sold over four millionsingles in the past five years alone. Alsofeaturing the legendary DigitalUnderground and Nappy Roots. Gatesopen at 5pm. Beer vendors outside.Advance tickets $12, $20 day of show.

Atlanta Funk Society @ The Bird Started in the summer of 2010, theAtlanta Funk Society brought together acollection of some of the best musiciansAtlanta had to offer. Members include gui-tarist and vocalist Rob Lane (theApostles), bass player Kevin Scott (Col.Bruce Hampton), drummer Duane Trucksand a female vocalist and trombone play-er round out the super group.

Midnight in Macon @ Shamrock A local band inspired by Macon’s own

southern rock roots. Expect blues, classicand some country.

FRIDAY, MAR 30From Within @ Wild Wing Cafe This Warner Robins duo plays acoustichits from the 70’s to present. Excellentmusicianship and a great song selection.

Lord T & Eloise @ TheHummingbird, Macon Easily one ofthe most interesting groups to come thruMiddle Georgia, if you love GOOD kitschyrap, then this show is for you! LORD T &ELOISE are Crunk artists and performersbased out of Memphis, TN. Thetwo self-proclaimed ‘saviors of rap music”have spent the last three years touring theUnited States, sharing the stage withsome of the industry’s most importantmodern performers, and bombarding theAmerican media with their own sense ofstyle, bravado and showmanship.

SAT, MARCH 31Abby Road Live! @ TheHummingbird, Macon Initially a trib-ute to the monumental "Abbey Road"album, the band has expanded its scope to

include more than 100 Beatles tunes, fromall eras of the Fab Four's career. AbbeyRoad LIVE! is not your typical Beatle look-alike tribute act; this show is about bringingto life some of the more mature and com-plex Beatles material in a raw & spiritedfashion.

Justin Cutway @ The Opening Act Cutway writes hushed, subtle songs thatprovide lush illustrations of the world witha sense of wonder and humor. Cutway’slyrics are filled with imagery taken fromnature and sentiments borrowed fromsimpler times. His songs bypass the com-mon singer/songwriter habit of nakedintrospection. The songs are personal, yes, but a far cry from the girl, drugs, andheartbreak route favored by his peers.

Baxter James @ Billy’s Clubhouse Frontman for Macon’s favorite coverband, Tron Jackson, a rock-n-roll coverband comprised of a bunch of hooliganswho like to forget their roles as attorneys(and one member slogging through theworld of finance) by playing loud music atvenues around Atlanta and Macon. Comehere fly solo and play acoustic on Billy’snewly remodeled stage.

Come Hear...

The Allman Brothers Band Museum at The Big House iskicking off our Back Yard Boogie music series. On March31st, music will begin at 5:00 pm with the soulful sounds ofLouise Warren. Louise has been gracing the stages aroundthe region and electrifying fans and audiences with her bluessoulful voice. In the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Clevelandhad struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, JasonHoward. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who

had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrestfor robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabil-itated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, was-n't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, JasonHoward continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs,Liberty County police found the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Clevelandwrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later con-firmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beatenfirst. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained:

Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I willnot only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered,so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team. Only yourselves to blame.

For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camp he con-structed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured onAmerica’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Policefound him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross countryrunner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is apage of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
