Lion, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14B,
Over the last several months I have tried to emphasize the International President’s theme and
the Lions’ motto We Serve. I have also touched on the other two components of the Global
Action Team concept which are Membership and Leadership. This month, however, I would
like to change things up a bit and talk about another aspect of Lionism which I feel is important-
Fellowship.
As you know, there are numerous venues where you can serve your fellow man through
volunteerism such as food pantries, hospitals, church organizations, Meals on Wheels and so
forth. The list is endless and you don’t need to be a Lion to participate. Although, you no doubt
have a good feeling when you volunteer in one of these setting, you probably don’t get the same
feeling of comradery that you get from being a Lion. I hope that you enjoy being associated with
members of your club and consider most of them if not all of them as friends at least at some
level. You come to realize that you have much in common. However, as you know the Lions
organization goes well beyond the borders of your own club. You are part of a worldwide
organization with over 1.4 million members. Although, I have personally only met a small percentage of Lions, I can honestly
say that I have never met a nicer group of people.
In the springtime, many clubs in the district hold various fund raising activities such Nights at the Races, Pancake breakfasts, and
Spaghetti dinners. Many of them are advertised in the Cauldron. Why not try to attend an event sponsored by another Lions Club
in the District? It is a great way to meet fellow Lions as well as picking up a tip or two for when your own club holds a similar
event. Also, you know that the money you spend will be supporting a worthy Lions related cause.
Speaking about fellowship in Lions, I would like to remind all of you about the District 14-B Spring Party which will be held on
April 29th in the afternoon at the Georgetown Centre in Pleasant Hills. The purpose of this get together is for fun and fellowship.
It gives me, the outgoing District Governor, a chance to thank everyone for their support during the year and to also give me the
opportunity to recognize some Lions in the District who have gone beyond the call of duty. Our keynote speaker will be Chris
Roach from Operation Safety Net which has been a District-wide project for the last two years. We will be presenting Chris with
a substantial check which represents money donated by the clubs in District 14-B as well as from a matching grant from Lions of
Pennsylvania Foundation. I hope that many of you will attend

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B,
As we go into April, it may not seem like it, but I truly believe that Winter is over,
and Spring has sprung. Spring is a time of rejuvenation. Trees will soon begin to
sprout fresh, green leaves. Crocuses and Daffodils will push their heads through the
ground (and sometimes through the snow) and animals will begin to have their young.
The entire world seems to be new and refreshed and undergoing a rejuvenation!
What better time to rejuvenate your Lions Club. People are tired of winter and searching for new things to do.
Encourage someone to visit your club. This is the time of the year when many clubs host Giveaway Nights to
distribute the funds they have worked so hard to earn to the charities that they support. Giveaway Nights are great
functions to invite prospective members to. The meals are good, there will be no arguments because everyone is
on their best behavior and it is a happy time. The prospective members get a chance to see Lions at their best,
doing what they do best, serving the community.
Plan a membership meeting. Invite your neighbor, mail carrier, son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law,
grandson or granddaughter, mechanic, grocery store manager, cashier, or somebody that you talk to when you are
shopping. Or here is a novel idea, invite your wife or husband! Have a special dinner and have a good speaker;
ask somebody from one of your charities to talk or ask an enthusiastic Lion. You can invite someone from the
District, another club, or ask one of your own Lions to speak.
Rejuvenation; something to look forward to. All Lions Clubs should make it a regular practice to rejuvenate their
clubs every so often. Otherwise they become stagnant and are no longer relevant, or fun. If your club is losing
more members than it is gaining, it is time for rejuvenation.
I’d like to take a moment to thank Lion Marni Latterman, President of the Pleasant Hills Lions Club for pledging
to be our 1st Vice District Governor. Lion Marni has temporarily taken the position as the Region 2 Zone A Chair
to gain the necessary experience and credentials to be Vice District Governor. Lion Marni has been visible around
the district the past year as she has supported Lion Geoff, another Pleasant Hills Lion. Lion Marni is also the
mother of Lion Eliana (Elli)Latterman, our District Secretary.
I also want to thank Lion Ralph Imbrogno for stepping out of the Region 2 Zone A Chair position (hopefully
temporarily) to allow Lion Marni to move into it to gain the necessary experience to move up.
And last, but not least, please make certain that your club elects their new officers and submits their names to
Lions Clubs International by May 15. The easiest way is by logging on to the MyLCI website. If you need help
with filing electronically, please contact PDG Harold Fletcher. Or, if you want to file using the paper form, please
see pages 27 and 28.

Time has a way of passing us by. Now is the time to remember and register for the MD-14 PA State Convention. The
deadlines are fast approaching: April 13 is the deadline for the $129 rate (plus tax) for the Penn Stater Hotel, April
27 is the deadline for meals, and April 27 is the tour deadline.
Please consider joining us in Happy Valley for this year’s State Convention. We have the Penn State Women’s
Volleyball Coach Russ Rose and Penn State Blue Band Director Gregory Drane as speakers. The convention
breakfast will include the Quilts of Valor program; the luncheon guest speaker will be Penn State Assistant Professor
Salvatore Stella speaking on the latest vision research; and International President Dr. Naresh Aggarwal is our
honored guest and speaker at the International Banquet.
There are many state committee meetings on Friday, and interesting and educational seminars on Saturday. The PA
State Lions Band will be having two concerts on Saturday.
Enjoy the background music and conversation with fellow Lions at the Friday Night Hospitality. Plan on meeting
old friends, making new friends and having a great time at the convention.

To all District 14B Lions, Lionesses and Leos,
I like the motto for our 100 year Centennial Celebration “Where there’s a need, there’s Lion”. Like many
communities across the country, western Pennsylvania has a problem with hunger… 1 in 7 of our neighbors
are food insecure means they are at risk of hunger. Not knowing where their next meal is coming from. 1
in 5 are children with seniors facing choices between paying rent medicine or utilities. Leaving little for
food.
For the past several years, I have worked to secure special bags for the food drive. Why spend the money
on bags you might ask? Food drive collections went from 420, 000 lbs. to last year’s total of 1,273,000 lbs.
collected. You helped fill pantries in food banks across Western PA. I'm asking your help to do the same
this year and show the spirit of “Where there's a need, there’s a Lion”. The Lions logo is on every one of the
625,000 bags showing Lions support. Because of timing I had to place the order to insure we would have
the bags in time for the drive.
I feel so strongly about this project that I put $2,000 in to pay for the bags up front. If you or your club
would like to help. please send your check payable to: McKeesport Lions Club and mail to McKee's Cafe,
100 Fifth Avenue, McKeesport Pa. 15132.
And moving all that food becomes one large task. If your club would like to help on the day of the food
drive May 12th. Call me and I'll try to get you set into a PO close to you. We collect food from 830,000
homes in western Pennsylvania.
For additional information, please contact me at 412 818 1473 or e- mail me at [email protected].

• Page 11 is the Certification form to be used for the District Governor or all Past District Governors.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM STATE OFFICE: In the interest of decreasing printing and postage costs, the MD-14 State Office will be implementing changes to State Convention and state per capita dues procedures.
• There will be no Elections operation held as part of the 2018 State Convention (May 17-20 in State College). This change comes as a result of no statewide ballot issue being presented this year and the fact all District Governor leadership teams will be elected at their respective sub-district convention or caucus.
• Delegate forms for the 2018 State Convention will still be required to certify Lions to take action during the Business Sessions on Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20.
• Delegate forms for the 2018 MD-14 State Convention will NOT be mailed to club secretaries and Past District Governors. Delegate forms will be printed in the January-February-March 2018 issue of MD-14 quarterly magazine, The PRIDE of Pennsylvania, and in district newsletters. The forms will also be available on the MD-14 Lions website (www.palions.org) and via district websites.
• Effective July 1, 2018, MD-14 semi-annual per capita dues invoices will no longer be distributed via the U.S. Postal Service. Per capita dues invoices will be emailed to club treasurers or other designated club officers on or about July 10. Yours in service and friendship,

The Mon River Fleet Lions Club has had an active, two-fold eyeglass policy for collecting and for donating
eyeglasses to those who qualify for assistance since 2011when the Mon River Fleet Lions Club was formed. To
date, 0ver 800 eyeglasses have been collected, cleaned, and donated to the University of Pittsburgh Lions Club.
In addition, a number of residents throughout the Mon River Fleet communities have received assistance over the
past few years. Plans are to provide several Mon River Fleet Leo Club members with eyeglass assistance this
year. Lions PDG Alice Jones and Rosa Davis serve as chairperson and co-chairperson, respectively. Submitted by

Request for Lions Financial Support
To Bring the Replica of Our National Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Wall That Heals to the Mon-Valley
McKeesport Renzie Park Area Aug. 9-12, 2018
Through the sponsorship of Zone 2A Chair, Ralph Imbrogno, McKeesport Lion Club’s Walt Yager made a educational
presentation at the Feb. 10th, District 14-B Cabinet Meeting and was granted permission to contact the District clubs for
fundraising purposes.
Lion Yager’s goal is to raise 10% or $5,831.80 from Lions activities or $1 for each of the 58,318 names currently etched on
our National Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. As a challenge grant, Walt has already personally donated
$583.18 to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund to generate his fundraising efforts.
All funds raised in excess of the costs to bring The Wall to the Mon-Valley will be donated to area Veterans, youth
development and related charities.
Those called from our area were a microcosm of the middle class economic and racial mix unable to avoid being drafted
because of college or marital status. Those that died were on average 19 years old. These losses are spread over at least 10
surrounding school districts with parallel Lions Club Associations.
The Wall That Heals is the only traveling replica sanctioned by America’s National Park Services. It is dedicated to honoring
those that made the ultimate sacrifice while affording visitors solace and healing.
Over 150 lives within the 10 to 12 mile radius of McKeesport’s Mon Valley were lost in Vietnam. McKeesport alone lost 23
with 11 solely from its local Boys Club. Boys Club Founder Sam LaRosa laid the ground work on Nov. 11, 1966 for what
is one of America’s 1st Memorials dedicated to the Vietnam War Dead. This legacy was further documented through Club
Member Sean Yager’s 10 page Thesis and 70 photo slide show as his 2004 Norwin High School Senior Community Service
Project. This documentation has now been categorized as How McKeesport Got to Vietnam - Operation Sammy & Sean
Project 66.
With Lions area membership of over 800 Walt’s targeted goal of $5,831.80 would approximate $7.50. per member.
Kindly consider this your opportunity to honor those of the Vietnam Era who answered the call and made the
ultimate sacrifice by helping “Bring The Wall That Heals to the Mon Valley”.
Under separate arrangement Lion Yager will be contacting area Clubs that choose to participate.
