What are your building blocks? What is making up every cell of your body? You have heard the famous quote “You are what you eat”, but have you ever really thought about the nutrients in your food?

Complete proteins, or “higher quality proteins, come from foods containing all of the essential amino acids in the quantity and correct ratio to…allow for tissue growth and repair” [1]. Meat and milk are two sources of complete proteins.

Shouldn’t you have the optimal proteins to grow and repair the various parts of your body?

Doug & Kim Wily at Larga Vista Ranch are raising natural grass-fed cows that are used for both meat and dairy. The nutritional differences between the meat of pasture-raised animals and feed-lot raised animals are significant:

1.)Lower in Fat and Calories: The meat from

grass-fed beef is lower in fat and has less calories than grain-fed meat.

2.) Extra Omega-3s: There are two to four times more omega-3 fatty acids in grass-fed animals than meat from grain-fed animals [2].

3.)CLA: CLA, conjugated linoleic acid, is a “good fat” that may be one of the body’s most potent defenses against cancer. When ruminants are raised on fresh pasture alone, between three to five times more CLA may be found in their meat versus the meat from animals fed conventional diets [3].

4.) Vitamin E: In a study done at Colorado State University - Fort Collins, meat from cattle that had been raised on a pasture had four times higher the amount of vitamin E than the meat from cattle raised on a feedlot [4].

Hello to you all. I'm Ryan Morris, owner of Country Roots Farm. I wanted to invite you out this month as our tomatoes are just beginning to ripen.

Our tomatoes are "Heirloom Varieties" which date back to the 15th

and 16th centuries. Some variety names you may see are: Red Zebra, Vintage Wine, Green Sausage, Brandywine and more.

Why don't you see these Heir-loom Varieties in most stores?

Heirloom tomatoes have a very thin skin and a short shelf life, they have not been hybridized for packing in boxes, etc. The taste and colors of these tomatoes are truly special.

Hope to see you!

Early to Mid-September will be the time for our own special "Moon & Stars" Watermelon!

You will not find anything like this at the grocery stores!

COUNTRY ROOTS FARM

Hi, my name is Joyce Kratzer, owner and Nationally certified massage therapist at the Colorado Avenue Day Spa. We offer a wide variety of wellness and spa treatments. We offer natural facials made with the finest oils, herbs and natural ingredients designed to rejuvenate, exfoliate, purify and moisturize the skin.

Our massage techniques vary from a relaxing Swedish massage, Neuromuscular therapy, La Stone therapy (hot and cold therapy), to a Thai massage done on a matt. We also specialize in Reflexology , specifically we offer a reflexology foot soak and scrub designed to detox and rejuvenate.

Here are some informative facts for

you to consider about massage:

Regular massage improves circulation, loosens stiff muscles, and relieves pain and stress. In addition, "the stimulation of the pressure receptors under the skin sends an impulse to the vagus nerve in the brain," says Tiffany Field, Ph.D., director of the Touch Research Institute (TRI), at the university of Miami School of Medicine. The vagus nerve has several functions, including helping control the heart and digestive tract.

Any stimulus to the skin increases vagal activity, says Field, which in turn lessens the production of the stress hormone cortisol, slows the heart rate, and facilitates digestion.

Regular massage can also increase the

production of natural cells that are on the front line of defense in the immune system.

I invite you to do your body a favor today, and get a massage!!

One can use John Elkington’s Framework of the “Triple Bottom Line” [6] to think about how sustainability and sustainable development affect us and our community. The triple bottom line includes:

The World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) was set up in 1983 by the United Nations. In 1987 they published a report called “Our Com-mon Future”, which became known as the “Brundtland Report” after the chairwoman, Gro Harlem Brundtland.

This report set forth the definition of sustainable development.

1.) Economic Prosperity

2.) Social Well-Being, &

3.) Environmental Quality

How can you affect this triple bottom line in a way that benefits you, your community, and your environment?

What if there were a simple, convenient, affordable, and proven way to feel better, have more energy, and get healthier? Wouldn't you want to know about it? It is common knowledge--that fruits and vegetables are essential to health. The foundation of health is nutrition, and the foundation of nutrition is fruits and vegetables. Quite simply--the more healthy fruits and vegetables we get--the healthier we are. And quite clearly--given the fast paced lives we lead--most of us find it pretty difficult to get the recommended 9-13 servings

of fruits and vegetables per day. Especially a variety of nutritionally dense, raw, vine-ripened, pesticide-free produce. Can you even imagine what might happen to your own health if you added seventeen fruits and vegetables to your diet everyday? Health is both a complex and a simple matter. While our physiologies are complex--the solutions for health are simple. At times these simple solutions are just too simple for our advanced intellects. We are part of Nature—we are designed and engineered to derive nourishment from Natures’ most perfect medicine—plant-foods.
