Old-Time Music
- Heavily influenced by Scottish/Irish- Kept the style and built off of sound- Use of acoustic guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, washboard, bass, dulcimer, Jaw harp- Especially popular due to its use in dances
- Square dance, folk dances, and clogging

American Melting Pot of Music
- Old-Time Music was uniquely “American” due to it’s mixing of many cultures in its style and instrumentation- Became popular throughout the areas it originated
First Generation of Country (1920’s)
- Folk music came to big cities due to people coming from the countryside to work, bringing their music with them
- Atlanta, Georgia was the first country hub
- Was not accepted by city public at first - About rural communities/ farm life

The Great Depression and its Effects
- Record sales plummeted
- Radio became extremely popular due to its convenience
- Cheap entertainment was found in “barn dances” all around the country, which popularized country music
Hollywood’s Role
“Western Music” became popular through movies
- Country and Western was played on the same radio station, increasing distribution
- Helped to create a template for many other forms of country
