SKILL- Rhyming, sequencing, counting. PREP- Optional: Print a copy of the poem to send home with each child.
PLAY- Teach children the rhyme by reciting it out loud. Start by holding five fingers in the air. Say, “Five little turkeys standing at the door. One waddled off, then there were four.” Put down one finger. Continue reciting the poem until it’s complete. Optional: This is a great poem for kids to act out. Have five kids stand at the front of the class. Each time the poem describes one of the turkeys waddling off, have a child sit down.

SKILL- Beginning reading: using picture clues, pointing to each word as kids read, reading sight words including I, have, a, has. PREP- Print the game on cardstock to give it extra durability. Cut along the dotted grey lines to separate the pieces. If you’ll be playing the game in a classroom, you may also want to laminate it. PLAY- Give each child a card. Starting with the “I have a turkey” card, have children read their card out loud. For instance, “I have a turkey. Who has a red acorn?” Then the child who is holding the matching card raises her hand and reads her card out loud. Play continues until all cards have been read. Note: If you’re playing the game with just one child, have him lay the cards in a line like this:

SKILL- Understanding that letters fit together in a certain order to make up words. PREP- Print the puzzles on cardstock to give them extra durability. Cut along the bold black lines to separate the puzzles. Flip them over and draw a different colored line down the back of each one. For instance, the apple puzzle might have a red line down its back and the family puzzle might have a blue line. The color code will help you find the pieces of each set quickly in the future. Cut along the grey lines to separate the pieces and slide each puzzle set into a Ziploc bag. Note: If you’ll be playing the game in a classroom, you may want to laminate the pieces. PLAY- Have children grab one puzzle at a time, solve it and read the word written at the bottom. Play continues until all puzzles have been solved.

SKILL- Letter writing, upper and lowercase letter matching. PREP- Print the game cards on cardstock to give them extra durability. Cut along the grey lines to separate the pieces. If you’ll be playing the game in a classroom, you may also want to laminate the cards. Print one tracing sheet for each child. (You may use either the upper or lowercase version.) PLAY- Mix up the turkeys and place them in a pile face down on the table. Divide kids into small groups. Have the first player flip over a turkey and say the name of the letters written on its belly. All of the players trace that letter on their record sheet. Then the next player grabs the top card in the pile. He reads the pair of letters out loud and all players trace it on their sheet... Play continues until all letters have been traced.

SKILL- Recognizing the beginning sound in words and knowing letter sounds. PREP- Print the game cards on cardstock to give them extra durability. Cut along the black lines to separate the pieces. If you’ll be playing the game in a classroom, you may also want to laminate the cards. Grab 18 clothespins. PLAY- Have children pick up one card at a time and say the name of the picture out loud. For instance, the picture of 3 red leaves is “red”. Ask kids to stretch the word out slowly “r-e-d” and clip the first letter sound they hear. Play continues until all cards have been clipped. Note: Words used are turkey, pumpkin, hat, leaf, corn, apple, red, orange, family, green, pie, love, brother, baby, grandma, dad, grandpa, mom.

SKILL- Beginning reading: using picture clues, pointing to each word as kids read, reading sight words including this, little, has. PREP- Print one book for each child. Stack the pages in 123 order and cut along the dotted grey line to separate the top and bottom halves. Slide the stack of bottoms (pages 4, 5, 6) behind the top sheets (pages 1, 2, 3) to collate the pages. Place two staples along the left hand side to bind the books. PLAY- Have kids write their name on the cover. Looking at the cover picture, ask kids to make guesses about what the title might be. Read the title together, making sure kids place their finger under each word as they read. Turn to page two and read the words out loud together. For the little turkey book, have kids use a crayon to color the color word. For instance, they would color the word “red” red. Continue reading the book, stopping to color the color words. Then have kids go back and color their turkeys or families. After several minutes, have kids pair up with a buddy and take turns reading the book out loud. Ask the friends to sign the back of the books to show that they heard the other child read. Then switch partners and have kids practice reading again, making sure to collect a signature when they are through. At the end, have kids count the number of signatures they collected.

SKILL- Reading and writing sight words, word families... whatever you’d like kids to practice. PREP- Type the words you would like kids to practice in the grey boxes on the sheet. Print one roll and write page for each child. Grab a pencil and dice for each child. PLAY- Kids roll the dice and count the dots that land on top. Then they write the word that matches in the correct column on the graph. Play continues until one column is filled. The word that reaches the finish line first is the “winner”.

SKILL- Reading and writing sight words, word families... whatever you’d like kids to practice. PREP- Type the words you would like kids to practice in the grey boxes on the game board. Grab a dice and print one game board for each group. Print one Turkey Trot record sheet and grab a pencil and coin for each player. PLAY- Oh no! The turkey is lost and needs to find his way back to the turkey pen. Players take turns rolling the dice and moving their turkey (their coin) that many spaces on the game board. Each time they land on a space, kids read the word out loud and write it on their record sheet. Play continues until all turkeys have reached the pen.

SKILL- Writing stories and informational text. PREP- Print one writing page for each child. If you think kids will need more space for their writing, print the lined page on the back. Print the word cards on cardstock to give them extra durability. PLAY- Have kids read the writing prompt and draw a picture of what they’d like to write about in the blank box. Then ask them to write on the blank lines below, using the cards to correctly spell common words.

SKILL- Number concept for 1-12. PREP- Print one record sheet for each child. If you’ll be playing the 1-6 version, grab one dice and crayon for every student. For the 2-12 version, grab two die and one crayon for each child. PLAY- Kids roll the die and count the dots that land on top. Then they find the matching number on their sheet and color in the turkey. If that number has already been rolled and there is not another matching turkey to color, students simply roll again. Play continues until all turkeys have been colored.

PLAY- Kids cut along the dotted lines to separate the pictures at the bottom of the page. Then they read the first pattern out loud, gluing the picture that’s missing in the correct spot.
