  • Dear Friends,

This is our final newsletter for 2020 – “Praise the Lord” I hear you cry!

We will be back in the New Year and I would just like to thank everyone who has contributed to the

Newsletter over what has been the most challenging of years.

In all likelihood we will continue to face an increase in restrictions between January and Easter, but

together we will continue to support each other and we will get through this.

We must offer special thanks to Patsy, Heather, Issie and everyone involved in a supporting our Pastoral

work from St Mary’s and Newick Good Neighbours.

Thanks also to Ali Brown and Lee Buck for the amazing children’s, youth and family work they have

    created this year

Thanks to our Churchwardens, our Treasurer, our Verger, Sexton, Flower Team, our Good News

Gardeners and the PCC for maintaining St Mary’s as our Spiritual centre throughout the pandemic.

Most all we would like to thank you, our congregation and community for all the love and support

which has carried us all over the last year, and may our communal prayer be that we will have a brighter

    and joy filled 2021.

Christmas is going to be a little different this year, due to coronavirus festive guidance and tier

restrictions, but the household at the heart of the Christmas Story had to respond to the authority’s

guidance on travel and make their way to Bethlehem.

Mary was pregnant and had to take good care of herself and the life growing within her. They were

socially distanced and isolated in Bethlehem because there is no room in the Inn, they didn't plan or

expect to find themselves staying in a stable, but life carried on and their child was born. A further two

households came to visit; a household of shepherds and a household of wise folk. Rather than rainbows,

Angels and the brightest star arced overhead, and they believed. An offering to all, that in this Christmas

Story the distance between heaven and earth was crossed the distance between God and human beings

was closed, the eternal word became flesh and lived among us.

We hope that you will be able to celebrate Christmas with others either in person or online, but we

know that some of us will experience Christmas alone, isolated and longing for human contact. Please

remember to pick up the phone, give people a call, if you are on your own, spend time on the

telephone; and if you are worried about missing a church service, please don’t be. We would rather

have you back with us in the New Year safe and well.

  • Remember you could always ring up the Church of England Dailyhope by calling 0800 804 8044

offering prayers, carols and talks especially for Christmas.

Or click here to access the website.

Above all, it was important to look to the future.

To Dream and focus on better times to come.

What you are going to do, what we are going to do together, when this time is over.

In these unprecedented times, to the each and every one of you in our churches and in our communities,

we as Church, would like to say we are continually praying for you. Doing our best to be there for you

when you need us the most.

May you know the God of heaven closing the gap to earth living with you this Christmas,

and may 2021 bring to a troubled world, the peace from Christ, to a searching world, the love from

Christ, and to a waiting world, the never-failing hope from Christ.

With Much Love, and the Joy of the Season

    Paul and Family xx

P.S. There will be no 8:00 a.m. service on the 27th December and Geoff will be taking the 10:00 a.m.

  • Dear Church Family,

We miss you all very much and this is written after a weekend on call (for Loz) where

announcements were made for a complete Christmas lockdown. We hope that you all

remain safe and well and that the hope that Christmas brings, will carry us all through

    these difficult times.

We thank you for all your prayers and cards. We

were overwhelmed with our leaving gifts, so so

generous! We haven’t been able to use the vouchers

as yet but will let you know when we do. The

photo of our beloved St Mary’s hangs in pride of

    place in the living room.

It has been a busy time trying to settle in. Loz hit

work straight away, in two busy departments

    running the trauma.

    Andy hit the

    applications for

    work as well as

    doing all of the

    unpacking and

    sorting. The house is

    now spotless and we

are well fed with fabulous meals cooked!

Amazing news is that Andy has been offered the theatre

manager job for the Children’s Hospital of Wales in

Cardiff. This is a fantastic opportunity, and they were

extremely impressed at interview. The right job has

    definitely come along.

We are renting in a small village just outside Cowbridge,

on a vineyard, next to the pub and down the road from

    the cider and Perry orchards!

    Thank you Lord!

We are 5 miles from the sea and Loz continues to swim,

Andy continues to despair!!!! (not really, but he doesn’t

feel the need to join in!)

The village church is gorgeous and we attend as

    lockdown allows.

Mum and Dad Harry are an hour away and we have

caught up in socially distanced fashion but we cannot be

there for Christmas this year, sadly.

    But all is well.

We love you and we miss you but we WILL see you all

    again very soon. Andy &Loz

  • It really is so hard to believe it’s so near to Christmas and then the end of this exceptional year,

I heard someone saying that not being able to do so much seems to have actually made us

busier than ever and time seems to fly by. I would agree as everything seems to be more

complex and takes longer. There have been times when the phase ‘just as we thought it

couldn’t get worse’ has sprung to mind (especially recently) and I am sure we all have moments

of real despair, I know I have, however I hope that we can all take courage and inspiration

from the birth of the baby Jesus whose coming is still changing lives today with messages

needed as much now as it was under the oppressive and cruel, rule of the Romans and brings

the hope for a future beyond our earthly being.

My memories of this year in Newick have been of all the kindly and unselfish acts that have

taken place and the way St. Mary’s has pulled together and although we might not be

physically together this Christmas as we were in other years we have perhaps an even stronger

bond through our faith and that we really are a family.

    It’s been lovely to see

    lots of those pretty,

    cheeky wooden

    reindeer on doorsteps

    and in windows, I saw

    Paul with one under his

    arm the other day and

    it brought back a

    memory of Tony

    building a larger

    reindeer from logs

    when my father was

    very poorly some years

    ago now, we crept into

    dad’s garden and left it

    so that the next

    morning he saw it on

    the lawn as he pulled

    back the curtains.

I had a wish for one like that for our own garden this Christmas, however we just couldn’t find

the right sized logs to build it from, suddenly one of those light bulb moments and I

remembered we had my dad’s old wooden saw horses which I could not bring myself to

dispose of, Tony has converted them into reindeer, one for my brother who is able to share the

    memories it brings us.

I thought I would share a photo and entitled it ‘old horse, new life’

I finish with the last lines of an old Christmas song, sung by Judy Garland when seems rather

apt with an uncertain few weeks ahead -

‘From now on, we’ll have to muddle through somehow.

So have yourself a merry little Christmas now’

  • Our PCC, which has general responsibility for running the has enjoyed a Church,

good year. Our Rector, Rev Paul Mundy, is Chairman by right of office. I chair the

meetings so that Rev Paul can take a full part in all our discussions.

We have 17 members, and meet six times a year. We also have a Standing

Committee of 7 which meets monthly. The main item on every PCC agenda is the

work, vision and mission of St Mary’s, led by Rev Paul. Other regular items include

Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Pastoral work, Outward Giving, the maintenance

and care of our buildings, Finance, Churchyard, Barn Centre and seasonal or topical

items such as Easter, Harvest and Christmas/Christmas Tree Festival.

Our members work hard on their individual areas of responsibility between

meetings, and I feel the management of St Mary’s is in good hands. I admire, and

am grateful for, the sterling work that our members do. Thanks to you all.

Our meetings are constructive and quite inspiring. PCC benefits, as does St Mary’s,

from the dedicated and inspirational leadership of Rev Paul. What an asset! Our

major achievement this year was the recent formal installation of Rev Paul as our

Rector. Praise be! Our Church wardens, Mel Balloch and Alan Young worked hard

for two years to achieve that, with full and enthusiastic support from the whole

    PCC.

We have a good spirit in our PCC. Our meetings are constructive and good

humoured, and there is normally some laughter at some stage. We feel the

reassuring presence of our Lord with us as we meet, and what has to get done, gets

    done.

Please include the PCC and our hard working members in your prayers, and pray

for our work in 2021, which we know will be a demanding year for St Mary’s.

Finally, many thanks to all PCC members for their hard work, their friendship and

fellowship and for their part in a successful 2020.

    Christopher Hume, Vice-Chair, PCC.

  • A big thank you to all who have supported

    helping the homeless this year.

    We are making a difference!

Also thank you for supporting my efforts at

fund raising for the youth groups.

Merry Christmas and best wishes for the

New Year. Stay safe and God bless.

A Christmas Greeting from the Sexton

I have just received an email from someone who said ‘Hope’ is the Christmas

message. How true that is, a really tough year that is ending quite badly, you only

need to read the news to know that. However, as 2021 progresses things will

improve and in the meantime we have the extended Church ‘family’ who in its

various ways can be relied on to give support, comfort and help. That is the most

wonderful thing that this year has shown us, how much we can give to each

other, how much we can help the wider community, if someone needs help we

give it where we can. Some amongst us will have their first Christmas alone, so

we need to stay in touch with them. In the Bailey household, we have lost older

family members and extended family can no longer join with us in a physical

presence and daughter Lucy is in Egypt so we will Skype on the 25th, but we are

determined to make the most of it in our small family ‘bubble’. Do stay safe and

well. Thank you for your kindness and God Bless, Tony xxx

I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive

THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed items and pictures, shared tips and advice

through the newsletter over the past year. This year has proved trying for all of

us and without the input from so many people we would not to be able to

produce such a great parish resource.

I hope you have a very relaxing, festive and safe

    Christmas and New Year.

    Caroline x

  • This has been one of the most challenging, creative and innovative years that I have ever experienced

and with a mixture of face to face and virtual clubs, teamed with the hand-delivery of Easter, Hallelujah

and Christmas packs, and with God's abundant blessings, we have grown as a group and now have 28

    children registered!

Special thanks to Issie, Patsy, Rebecca Prinsloo and Lulu and to Rebecca Hume for being so faithful and

tireless in their enthusiasm, love and commitment to Owls. And thank you to all those who continue to

pray for Owls, and who donate gifts and resources to keep the Children's ministry alive and growing. The

Owls birthday cards are truly lovely! Thank you also to Sylvia and Dorothy who made the

beautiful crafts which delighted the Owls in their Christmas packs. Thank you also to Jackie who has

tirelessly helped support Owls Club through the website and magazine.

I would also like to thank Caroline in the office for all her support and for putting up all my last minute

offerings with such grace and creativity!

Owls Club send everyone a 'Merry Christmas and a hootingly awesome New Year!". Xxx

  • Lord Jesus, as we celebrate your birthday in Owls Club today, we praise and adore you

for your wonderful words of Matthew 19:14 “Let the little children come to me, and do

not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

As we celebrate the awesome example you set with your life, death and resurrection, we

also celebrate the 26 children and the two young helpers who are now signed up to

    Owls Club.

We give thanks for the enthusiasm and the joy that these children bring to Newick

Church and pray that you surround them with your love and protection today in Owls,

over Christmas and for the rest of their lives.

We pray for Owls families, that we as a Church may do all that we can to include,

support, encourage and show unconditional love to them through prayer, friendship,

time and resources. We pray that we can support Owls families in their faith journeys

and spread the love of Jesus to them through our words and actions.

We look to 2021 as a year of support and growth for Newick Church and pray that you

may bless and keep Owls Club and their families and shine your glorious face upon

    them.

    In your name we pray,

    Amen

  • Worship at St Mary’s, Newick, During COVID19

    What To Expect!

    Before you arrive

We ask you to consider your own risk of attending an indoor gathering. While we will be taking a number of

steps to keep you safe, we cannot make this risk-free. You might want to look at the NHS guidance on whether

you are at higher risk of coronavirus and be guided by their

    advice: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/people-at-higher-risk/whos-at-higher-risk-

    fromcoronavirus/

We ask you NOT to attend the service if you have: A new cough: A temperature: Lost your sense of smell or

    taste.

You may want to bring your own hand sanitiser, although some will be available

You are welcome to wear a mask/face covering. Please remember that face coverings protect others from your

germs – they are not very good at protecting you from other people’s germs. They are not a replacement for

good social distancing, hand hygiene, and self-isolating if you have symptoms when you arrive.

When you arrive, we will take some contact details. These will be kept for 3 weeks after the service and given

to Track and Trace if someone from the service later tests positive for coronavirus. They won’t be used for any

other reason and if they are not needed for this purpose, they will be securely disposed of after 3 weeks.

The welcomer will let people into the building in households/bubbles. You will be asked to sanitise your hands

on arrival, then go immediately to a seat in church.

The seating in church will be arranged in ones and twos at 2m intervals from each other. We ask you to go

straight to your seat and remain there for the duration of the service.

Gentle music will be playing to help you pray as you wait for the service to begin.

The doors will remain open during the service to allow some ventilation so you may notice it is a little cooler

    than you expect.

    During the Service

The words you need for the service will be on a paper order of service on your seat or projected onto the

screen. If you receive a paper copy (8:00 am) this will then be your personal copy. Please take it home with

you after the service and bring it back next time.

The service will be livestreamed on our Facebook page, but those watching at home will only be able to see

those on the chancel step e.g. the priest, someone leading the prayers etc. To ensure we include those

worshiping at home, some elements of service (e.g. a reading, the prayers or a sermon) may be given by

someone at home. You will be able to listen to the audio of this.

Due to risk of aerosol spread, there will be no singing during the service.

We ask that when you are saying the responses that you speak quietly and prayerfully – again to reduce risk of

    droplet spread.

During distribution of communion, only bread will be distributed. The priest will wear a mask and wash their

hands before distribution. The bread will be distributed from the chancel step, please remain standing to

receive. Please form an appropriately distanced queue and return to your seat avoiding others. You might want

to use your hand sanitiser (if you have brought some) before receiving communion.

If you do not want to receive communion for any reason, that is absolutely fine – just place your hands across

your chest and the priest will pray a blessing instead or remain in your seat.

At the end of the service

After the priest has processed out, the welcomer will ask people to leave a row at a time.

Please wait for the welcomer to ask you to leave.

Please take any orders of service home with you.

Please do not stop to chat while leaving the building. Once out of the building you are welcome to talk in small

groups of not more than 6 in the churchyard.

Please do not block other people’s exit from the building.

Please remember to stay 2m apart from people from other households.

If you test positive for coronavirus up to three weeks after the service, please let us know.
