Donated by Nancy Blisset David Fairchild: The World Was My Garden A Goodreads.com review: Though rife with 19th century views on imperialism and race (among other things), this is truly a fascinating book. Weaving the story of the USDA's department of plant introduction with his own work as a plant explorer, Fairchild reminisces about the famous people he met along the way, the adventures he encountered, and some of the more colorful untold stories of American history. I found the history of DC's Japanese cherry blossom trees, early American aviation, the mining of the Potomac, early National Geographic endeavors and each plant introduction story really captivating. Fairchild's writing is light and clever and moves quickly through an incredibly rich and varied life. A great read for foodies and those interested in where our food comes from. He recounts the stories of searching for new varieties of crops (avocados, almonds, persimmons, mangos, dates, apples, walnuts,

wheat, hops, etc) and crops completely new to the American palate (various Japanese root vegetables, taro, mangosteens, etc).

Donated by Sandra Gail Lambert (author): The River’s Memory Fiction. A woman born without legs spends her days swimming with manatees. Two artists, separated by centuries, guide each other's hands. And a child of the Florida frontier sits on the graves of her siblings to think about race relations and the habits of caterpillars. These are some of the women who live along the banks of a river where water billows from caverns of silent lakes. None of them are famous. None have children. Instead, their stories exist in a mosaic of time and shadowed history, and the things of the river--clay and water, trees and bone--carry their memories forward. http://sandragaillambert.com/

Robert Crawford and William R Brueckheimer: The Legacy of a Red Hills Hunting Plantation: Tall Timbers Research Station & Land Conservancy

The Red Hills region is an idyllic setting filled with longleaf pine grasslands that stretches from Tallahassee, Florida, to Thomasville, Georgia. At its heart lies Tall Timbers, a former hunting plantation turned ecological research station. In 1919, sportsman Henry L. Beadel purchased a plantation and renamed it Tall Timbers. As

was the tradition, Beadel burned the woods after every hunting season in order to keep them clear of the thick brush required by ground foraging birds like quail. After the U.S. Forest Service condemned the practice in the 1920s as harmful for the forest and its wildlife, the quail population diminished dramatically. Encouraged by his longtime friend Herbert L. Stoddard, who was conducting scientific bird research on his property, Beadel set his sights on conserving the land in order to study, among other things, the effects of fire on plants and wildlife. In 1958, Beadel, Stoddard, and others established Tall Timbers Research Station Inc. as a private, nonprofit corporation devoted to scientific purposes, and upon his death, Beadel donated his entire Tall Timbers estate to be used for ecological

research in perpetuity. http://talltimbers.org/

Donated by Daphne Lambright Walter Kingsley Taylor: Florida Wildflowers: A Comprehensive Guide Walter Kingsley Taylor's Florida Wildflowers in their Natural Communities was wildly praised for its beauty, ease of use, and unique organizational structure: plants were described in the context of where they grow, making identification much simpler--and more rewarding--for the casual hiker or wildflower enthusiast. Vastly expanded and updated with new taxonomy, this new book provides detailed information on more than 450 species included in the earlier edition and nearly doubles the number of species included by expanding coverage into wetlands.

Building inside Nature’s Envelope: How Construction and Land Preservation Can Work Together, Andy Wasowski, author: From Amazon “A structure built within nature's envelope looks as if it has been gently set down into a mature and established landscape--which is the easiest kind of landscape to maintain. He illustrates this new concept in construction through profiles of sites in California, Arizona, South Carolina, Minnesota, and other locales in North America. He also highlights useful techniques for revegetation, discusses the importance of soils, and argues for the preservation and maintenance of natural habitats. “

Donated by Florida Master Naturalist Program: Two Scholarships for the Florida Master Naturalist Program

The mission of the Florida Master Naturalist Program (FMNP) is to promote

awareness, understanding, and respect of Florida's natural

world among Florida's citizens and visitors.

This mission is accomplished in part by FMNP Instructors,

who teach students in the program about Florida's

environment using science-based information and interpretive

techniques that prepare students to share their knowledge

with others.

This mission is also accomplished by FMNP graduates, who

share their knowledge with others and foster principles of

sustainability, connectivity, and biodiversity to assist others to

understand and respect Florida's natural world as a

community to which we all belong.

In essence, the FMNP teaches those who teach others.

A box of healthy snacks

Graze was started by seven friends sick of chips and candy, who wanted a better way to snack.

It’s not just the unique combinations and flavors that make our snacks great, it's our dedication to find the highest quality ingredients. Some people think that an almond is

just an almond, but once you’ve tried our Californian almonds with our sweet yet spicy salsa mesquite seasoning, you’ll never look at an almond in the same way again.

In addition, graze is helping to fight world hunger: We founded the graze school of farming in rural Uganda as a way of graze giving something back…

Here we teach the community how to grow, maintain and then harvest fruit from their own orchards but the most amazing thing about the school is that it provides our graduates with a sustainable source of income. Each student is given the means to grow food for themselves, their families and to sell at local markets.

A signed & numbered reproduction of an 18X23 pen & ink drawing done by Dr. Howard (Bud) Waite. He was a talented but not famous artist who lived most of his life in Palm Beach County. He was a veterinarian and was noted in the area for being the first vet for the Palm Beach Zoo (then called the Dreher Park Zoo). Anyone who lived in West Palm Beach and surrounding area around the 1960s & 70s probably took their dogs, cats, & birds to him for vet care. His art was published by the Florida Wildlife Federation, Florida Audubon Magazine and Florida Out-doors. We are proud to offer his artwork as we feel he captures the spirit and personality as well as the detailed perfection of each critter he so fondly portrays.

Your home includes direct access to an 80 acre private North Carolina managed State Forest reserve, ideal for picnics, hiking and birding and plant identification of various ferns, mosses, and native plants and trees. There are miles of private roads and spectacular views from the top of Dodson Mountain. The Kubota (the 4-wheeled mountain mule) will take you up 3500 feet and also across the old logging trail that we just re-opened for mountain views after 50 years.

Just steps away from your home are a private “Har-tru” tennis court for your use, complete with a steam-room bath house. A gorgeous mountain 18-hole Golf Course is five minutes from your home (but an hour drive to the nearest Starbucks).
