THANK YOU PARKING LOT MASS CREW!
The parish would like to thank all the people who made the parking lot Masses a great success. It took a
crew of people from Judy Bagley, our sacristan, the platform, furniture moving, sound crews and music
ministries. Without these dedicated people, there is no way so many people could go to Mass. Thank you
for what you did for us and for God!!
A special thanks to Peter and David!

Dear Parishioners,
This weekend we celebrate the Fourth of July. It is a great time to thank
God for the beautiful country we call home. Even as the United States is
going through some very difficult times with the pandemic, protesting,
violence, immigration fights and political bickering, it is still the freest na-
tion in history. That is why it is so important to pray for our nation and its
leaders. Let us pray that God helps us as we work through all of these
issues. Freedom of religion is a foundational right we hold dearly, and
there is great concern that it is being under attack, especially Christianity.
It is something our founding fathers fought for and I hope we would still
do that today.
This is our first weekend with a full schedule with video screens in sepa-
rate locations to accommodate more than fifty. If things do not go as
planned, please be patient with us. We are all amateurs at this
technology, so we are doing the best we can. Hopefully it will get better,
and that we will not need it too much longer. We will continue live
streaming since this has been a great way for people to connect with us
when they cannot get to Church. I want to thank the army of people it
takes to put all this on.
Confessions are now done from the rectory window at Holy Family. We
have extra hours because we cannot have them in the other churches
until we can be in confined spaces. It seems that it will not be soon so if
you would like to avail yourself to the Sacrament, please see the times
posted on the internet and in the bulletin. I want to thank Fr. Seamus for
all the time he gave to our parish by holding “Drive Through Confessions”
from the window of his rectory.
Peace in Christ,
Fr. Daniel

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 5, 2020
St. Anthony Zaccaria,
Priest (July 5)
Anthony, who was born in
Italy in 1502, lost his father
when he was young. His
mother ensured that he was
well educated and taught him
compassion for the poor and sick.
Anthony studied medicine at the
University of Padua, but quickly
realized that he was called to heal
souls as well as bodies. While studying
for the priesthood, he taught
catechism and assisted the dying.
After his ordination, he founded a
community for the assistance of fallen
women and girls; he also founded a
congregation of priests to revive the
love of Divine worship. Worn out by his
labors, he died at the age of thirty-
seven in the year 1539.
St. Maria Goretti, Virgin
and Martyr (July 6)
The third of seven
children, Maria helped with
the younger children and the
housework while her mother ran the
farm. When she was eleven, she
received her First Communion. Six
months later, Alexander, the son of the
man who was a partner of the Goretti
farm, began making sinful advances
toward Maria. She repelled his
advances each time until, at last,
Alexander attacked her outright. When
she resisted, Alexander stabbed her
several times with a dagger. Maria
was rushed to the hospital, where she
received Communion for the last time
before dying. Due to her prayers,
Alexander was completely converted.
After twenty-seven years in prison, he
begged forgiveness of Maria’s mother
and then became a Capuchin
lay brother.
St. Veronica Giuliani,
Virgin (July 9)
Veronica, born in Italy in
1660, entered the Poor
Clares at the age of seventeen. In
1693, she had a vision in which she
was offered the chalice of Christ’s
sufferings. After a fierce struggle, she
accepted, and ever afterward she
carried the marks of our Lord’s
sufferings. The next year, the imprint
of the crown of thorns appeared on
her head, and on Good Friday, 1697,
she received the Stigmata. At the
request of her confessor, she wrote
down her religious experiences,
entitled Diary of the Passion. Veronica
was Abbess of the convent for eleven
years before her death on July 9,
1727.

Cardinal Francis Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan: A Role Model for the Vietnamese
Church.
The life of Cardinal Francis Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan inspires Vietnamese Chris-
tians everywhere to proclaim the Gospel in all circumstances. He is known as an
icon of the Vietnamese Church because he was a wonderful example of virtues of
faith, hope, and charity, which greatly affected the formation of Vietnamese
Catholics in the twentieth century.
Cardinal Thuan was a model of Christian faith. When he was young, he
joined the seminary and was ordained a priest at twenty-five years of age. He
became a bishop at the age of 39. On April 24, 1975, he was appointed
Coadjutor Archbishop of Saigon. On the 15th of August of that year, he was imprisoned by the Communist Government
for 13 years. Even though he was in prison, he lived responsibly to fulfill his duties as a shepherd to the faithful. While
in prison, he wrote letters of hope on old calendars and asked a young boy to copy and distribute them among the
faithful. These letters were compiled into the book, The Road of Hope. His letters strengthened parishioners in the
faith and helped them to persevere. In addition, his faith was strong and he desired to celebrate Mass in prison. He
knew that this only power was in the Holy Eucharist, but he had nothing with which to celebrate Mass. When he was
allowed to request something such as clothing, toothpaste, etc. He wrote home saying: “Send me some wine as
medication for stomach pains.” The faithful understood what he meant and they sent to him a little bottle of Mass
wine, with a label reading “medication for stomach pains,” as well as some hosts broken into small pieces. He turned
the prison into a church and the palm of his hand into an altar. He turned his shirt pocket into a tabernacle and the
darkness into light with the Holy Eucharist. Looking at his faith, many prisoners regained fervor for their faith. He also
reminded the prisoners to embrace suffering and to use their current circumstances to grow in faith. His faith teaches
all Christians to proclaim Christ’s love in every circumstance.
Cardinal Thuan was a model of Christian hope. As a bishop, he became a prisoner, but he chose to see his
imprisonment as Christ’s gift to him. Pope Benedict XVI said that “Cardinal Thuan was a man of hope. He lived on
hope and spread it among those he met. It was thanks to this spiritual energy that he was able to withstand all the
physical and moral difficulties.” During his time in prison, he placed his hope in accepting God's plan for him. To
overcome challenges and the dark night of prison, he offered his emptiness and suffering as a prayer to God the
Father. He wrote in his book The Road of Hope: “The person of hope is a person of prayer. The object of hope is the
object of prayer. The person of hope is God’s coworker.” The example of Cardinal Thuan helps Vietnamese Christians
to move on from the past to live in faith and build hope.
Cardinal Thuan was a model of Christian charity. He was interested in his prison guards’ needs. He said: “They
were my brothers and I had to be kind to them.” He saw the prison guards as a family and became their friends. He
taught them to learn foreign languages such as English, French, Latin, etc. When the prison guards asked if he felt
hate for them for his imprisonment; he only assured them of his concern and love for them. After that, the prison
guards became his disciples and their relationship changed for the better. The government officials saw that by his
influence, the prison guards changed their beliefs about communism. The government was constantly changing the
Cardinal’s prison guards, but the guards already imprinted his ideals in their hearts. His love showed that only the
Christian faith can bring about a change of heart. It is when one loves unconditionally that one brings forth new life.
Cardinal Thuan always lived Vietnamese Catholic ideals and brought them wherever he went. Even though he died, he
still inspires faith, hope, and charity for Vietnamese Catholics. His virtues are making Vietnamese Catholic faith
stronger. He is a model for Christians around the world.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
We are all familiar with the refrain, “You have put on Christ. In him you have been baptized. Alleluia, alleluia!” In
Baptism, we “put on” Christ. In putting on Christ, we put on all that Christ is and represents: hope, faith, and love. We
are no longer bound to the sins and failures of the flesh, that part of us that resists God and relies exclusively on
human means. It also means that we are not in debt to our past, complete with its sins, failures, regrets, fears, and
unfulfilled dreams. There is always hope. In putting on Christ, we put on God’s vision for the world, for all of His children
and for us. We have been given a road map to guide our paths and a blueprint to follow for our life’s journey.
There is no need for regret, and we are not tethered to our past. Is there anything in your past that you regret? Any
decision or memory that continues to haunt you? We have all made mistakes, and we have this uncanny ability to
continue beating ourselves up over things we can no longer do anything about, except learn from them. To put on
Christ means that I can now bring God’s unconditional love to my hurtful memories and sinful choices. With each new
moment and every new choice, I can start clean and live in freedom.
Imagine adults when the disciples were preaching and baptizing. They came to baptism not really knowing who they
were, with pasts that were broken, seeking to live the joy of the Gospel they heard spoken to them and wanting the
love they saw witnessed in the lives of those who believed. What tremendous celebrations their baptisms must have
been! They could now have the support of a community, full participation in the sacraments of the church, focus for
their disordered lives, consolation, healing, and an understanding of what life is really all about.
Our lives are meant to be celebrations of the Spirit we have received in Baptism. How does that joy get expressed in
and through you? When we truly understand that we have put on Christ, our burdens can become much lighter. It is
odd that so many Christians look like they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Wouldn’t it be
wonderful if those weights could be lifted and joy experienced! ©LPi

Sharing the Gospel
When you are tired and upset, go to God. Talk things over with him. Tell him the whole story. God is a good listener. He
has a gentle heart. He will say to you, "I love you. I forgive you." Then snuggle up with your favorite blanket and take a
nap. When you wake up, you will feel much better. Then you will share your love by saying, "May I help you?"
Prayer: Lord Jesus, fill me with love for my family, friends, and neighbors.
Something to Draw: Draw God holding you on his lap while sitting in your favorite rocking chair.
Mission for the Week: I will tell God when I am tired and upset. He will calm me.
