Dear Parishioners,
These unusual times are calling for unusual responses, and one of
these is catching up with the Sacraments for those who were in the
RCIA program and the children in the sacramental preparation for
Confirmation and First Communion. You will see in the parish
calendar a number of Masses for these Sacraments because they are
only allowed 50 at each Mass. In order to allow parents, siblings and
grandparents to be present, we have to do a number of them
throughout July and August. Please pray for these children and adults
who are seeking the graces of the Holy Sacraments.
Now that I have been here a year, I am ready to reassess the office
staffing positions. Next week you will see two new positions in the
bulletin. The office of Faith Formation under the direction of Lisa
Daigle will be looking for a part time Youth Minister/Campus Minis-
ter. The person will assist Lisa in working with high school teens and
Bates students. We will also be looking for a Liaison with the
Immigrant Community. Through a grant from Catholic Charities
Maine, we were given funds to support this position and help us
connect with the Catholics who are among the immigrant community
and build greater connections. Look for a description of these
positions next week.
Because of a generous donor, we will be installing the live streaming
camera for Holy Trinity Church. What we currently have is an iPhone
and a wireless microphone, and sometimes it works and sometimes it
does not. It is great to see so many people joining us for Mass who
might not have the chance if it were not for the live streaming. It is
taking some time but we will hopefully provide more and more content
on our live streaming platform.
Peace and take care,
Fr. Daniel

St. Apollinaris, Bishop
and Martyr (July 20)
Apollinaris, a disciple of St.
Peter, was later ordained
by Peter and sent as a
missionary Bishop to
Ravenna. He converted many people
there, including an official and his
wife, and as a result he was scourged
and sent away. He went to Bologna,
where he converted the family of a
patrician; for this, he was driven away.
He then preached in Dalmatia, until
he was again sent away. Apollinaris
returned to his See three separate
times, and each time he was tortured
and cast out again. On his fourth
return, he was recognized by a mob,
beaten, and left for dead.
St. Lawrence of Brindisi,
Priest and Doctor of the
Church (July 21)
Lawrence, born in Italy,
entered the Capuchin
Franciscan community
when he was sixteen. At the University
of Padua, he mastered seven
languages, as well as making rapid
progress in his studies of Philosophy
and Theology. In 1598, Lawrence and
eleven other Capuchins were sent to
establish communities throughout
Germany and Austria, which, at the
time, were threatened by
Lutheranism. His holiness and
administrative ability led the Emperor,
Rudolf III, to appoint Lawrence to
organize the Catholic princes against
the invading Turks. When the
Christians were outnumbered four to
one, Lawrence himself rode before
the army with a raised crucifix, and
the Turks were repulsed. Lawrence
returned to seek seclusion in Italy,
only to find that he had been elected
Minister General of the Order. He died
in 1619 in Lisbon, Portugal.
St. James, Apostle (July 25)
James, along with his
brother, John the
Evangelist, followed Jesus
during His Life. They were
so zealous that Jesus
called them the sons of
thunder. James was present at the
Transfiguration, and was near Christ
during His Agony in the garden. After
the dispersion of the Apostles, James
preached the Gospel in Spain before
returning to Jerusalem. Here, by order
of Herod Agrippa, James was
beheaded at Jerusalem around Easter
of the year 44. He was the first of the
Apostles to be martyred.

Maine Catholic Youth “Virtual
Convention on July 26
While we cannot gather physically for
the convention this year, the Catholic
Youth Leadership Team has been
working hard to ensure that the show
still goes on by planning a virtual
convention. To avoid virtual “fatigue,”
the CYLT team has decided to hold a
shortened, virtual convention that will
include a live-streamed Mass with
Bishop Robert Deeley on Sunday,
July 26, at 10 a.m. Details about how
the event will be experienced will be
shared soon. Please keep the team in
prayer as they continue to prepare for
this wonderful event!

The Annual Seminarian Summer Retreat
The Annual Seminarian Summer Retreat begins on July 19 to 23, of which I will be
attending. It will take place at Marie Joseph Spiritual Center in Biddeford. At the
seminarians retreat, the One who called us to be His servants is waiting to renew
our hearts, souls, and ministries.
This retreat is unique because it provides the seminarians from all over the dio-
cese to gather together and continue building relationships. This is the time for us
to reflect on what we have done and what we need to do on our journey, to become priests. We will also have time to
share our experiences about our vocation and community life in the seminary.
Please pray that we have a fruitful retreat, especially pray for our Vietnamese seminarians who are serving in the
Diocese of Portland. As you know, mastering a foreign language takes time and patience and cannot be learned in a
short time. So, as a foreigner, English can be the hardest thing for us. Community life and spiritual life are also a
challenge for us. As seminarians, the spirit of community life is very important.
Americans enjoy and focus more on the spirit of individuality. So this is a challenge for
us as Vietnamese seminarians, since we come from a Communist country.
Building friendships with other American seminarians is not always easy because of
the many duties and academic assignments that consume our time. Balancing our
studies and our prayer lives can be very difficult. Therefore, we need your continuous
prayers and support.
And so I offer this prayer:
“Oh Holy Spirit, Spirit of wisdom and divine love, impart Your knowledge, understanding, and counsel to seminarians
that they may know the vocation wherein they can best serve God. Give them courage and strength to follow God's holy
will. Guide their uncertain steps, strengthen their resolutions, shield their chastity, fashion their minds, conquer their
hearts, and lead them to the vineyards where they will labor in God's holy service. Amen.”

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 19, 2020
I haven’t found a single foolproof answer. Too many
people are walking around raw, bleeding and broken.
Others are so tightly wound that one wrong word can
make them snap.
We are not totally without guidance. The spiritual works
of mercy call Christians to be just and
compassionate toward others. We can
show others the compassion of Our Lord
and lead them closer to him. Traditionally,
the Church teaches there are seven
spiritual works of mercy. Right now we
need more of the last four in our world.
More forbearance, more forgiveness,
more comfort, and more prayer. No
shortage exists of people, online or in the
real world, ready and willing to tell others
how to think or act. But precious few are
willing to just love others in their pain, give
others the benefit of the doubt, let go of past wounds,
and do the hard work of interceding for our broken world.
So, how do we carry out these spiritual acts of
compassion?
First of all – listen. Don’t think about what we want to
say; we simply hear what others need to say. Don’t
critique their pain; enter into their pain with them. A word
of affirmation, an offer of prayer – all can go a long way
to bringing comfort to the sorrowful.
To bear wrongs patiently requires us to assume the best
about those who hurt us. It asks us to presume that the

What the world needs now: More works of mercy
Months of lockdown and loss, followed by scenes of massive protests, wanton destruction, heated
conversations on everything from face masks to race. How do you exist in a civil society that has lost
its civility?
was acting out of ignorance, or is suffering themselves
and acted out of their own pain. We risk doing a grave
injustice to someone when we leap to judgment.
Bearing wrongs requires us to not return kind for kind;
It is to obey Jesus’ injunction, “But if any
one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to
him the other also …” (Matthew 5:39).
Bearing wrongs also patiently calls us to
not pity ourselves. When we are attacked
or unjustly maligned, we should never see
ourselves as an innocent victim. Because
we’re not. We’ve all done a thousand
things wrong. From the cross, God
anticipated our need for forgiveness. He
died for us – while we were still far from
him. God asks us to do the same: forgiving
people who don’t deserve or want or even
ask for our forgiveness.
Last but not least, we’re called to pray for the living and
the dead. Fear, confusion, rage and chaos are the
devil’s favorite children. He breeds them. He delights in
them. He wants us to hurt the hurting. He wants us to
take offense, wallow in self-pity and judge those who
think or look differently from us, to hold on to hurt and
hate, bitterness and rage.
In the weeks and months ahead, the world needs our
prayers Ask God to let compassion, forbearance and
forgiveness follow. To that prayer, God will never say No.

Greetings : We continue to celebrate our diversity in language always
blessed with the opportunity that celebrates our unity….holy mass.
Celebrating holy mass strengthens us during these trying times but
also gives us the grace to continue to deepen our relationship with
Jesus. Let us continue to pray together opening new doors of grace.
May this grace challenge us to live our faith more deeply and be examples in our community of people of faith.

Grace and sin, belief and unbelief, good and evil all exist together. While we wrestle with these two dimensions of
reality inwardly, they are also witnessed in the actions and words of others. Many, all too often, beat themselves up
because of their sin. We are also all too quick to pass judgment on others whom we perceive to be in error and
walking down a wrong path. God does not make rash judgments, nor should we. Patience is the order of the day as is
an understanding that God is ultimately the caller of the shots.
Our faith tells us that while God allows the wheat and the weeds to coexist, the wheat will always triumph. As long as
we can cultivate even a little faith and a small measure of desire for God, He can produce abundant blessings and
good things. Even when the weeds seem to have triumphed, there still may be a small measure of faith remaining that
can be cultivated and grown. It doesn’t take much! Unless a person totally allows the weeds to reign, there is always
to be found at least a small measure of faith, good, light, and love. With even this small portion, God can produce
abundant growth.
Admittedly, it is easy to give into the weeds, and they grow very quickly. Any gardener knows this to be true. Some-
times, the weeds even seem more attractive and vibrant. Dealing with weeds can quickly become a losing battle, and
they can look healthier and grow faster than the very plants we are trying to protect. It’s easy to give into them and let
them win. While God will deal with all things in due time, we are responsible for keeping things in check in the short
term. It is our task to keep our eyes fixed on God’s presence and mercy. We are asked to avoid judgment. And, it is not
our responsibility to deal with the weeds in someone else’s garden, only our own. One garden is enough responsibility
for anyone.
Weeds have power. We have to realize this. While they can appear attractive and healthy, they can quickly choke us off
from God’s presence. Our task is one of maintenance and cultivating a desire for God. Even the smallest kernel of faith
can grow into something wonderful. In God’s time, the eternal harvest will come, and we will no longer have to worry
about the weeds. ©LPi

Sharing the Gospel
As God's child, you are the wheat in God's field. As you love and trust God more, your faith will grow. You will see others
around you who love God, too. God will be happy to see you growing up in God's love. As you grow taller and stronger,
you will also notice others around you who ignore or hate God. God will get rid of those weeds. Then he will bring you
into heaven.
Prayer : God, help my love and faith to grow strong.
Something to Draw : Draw a picture of wheat and weeds.
Mission for the Week : Help your parents in the garden. Watch how carefully weeds need to be pulled, so you don't
pull up the good plants, too.
