On the 13th March, more than 600children from five Thanet schoolstravelled to St Paul’s Cathedral, Londonfor an Inspire event. The “Inspire” serviceand celebration was organised by theAttwood Foundation. Northdown,Newlands, Salmonstone, Drapers Millsand Dame Janet, all part of the TheKemnal Academy Trust, took part in theservice and the Attwood Academy choirsang four beautiful songs. The choir wasmade up of 206 pupils from the fiveschools and led expertly by Sam Palacios.Sam has been working with the childrensince September and this was the secondconcert they have performed. InDecember they sang a variety of songs atMargate Winter Gardens. However, theopportunity to sing in the hallowedCathedral inspired and awed the choir.Banners from each school were paradedduring the service and former ScotlandRugby winger Kenny Logan gave aninspirational speech and described to thechildren how he had difficulties at schoolbut never gave up.ames Kendall, head teacher ofNorthdown Primary School, said: "Thetrip to St Paul's was an incredibleopportunity for our children to visit oneof the most historic and iconic buildingsthis country has to offer. Tom Attwood,Chairman of Thanet AcademiesGoverning Board and Commissioner ofthe Social Mobility and Child PovertyCommission and the brainchild behindthe event said:”Alongside addressing theimmediate need to provide high qualityeducation, one of our guiding principlesis striving to instil in our pupils a senseof ambition, the capacity to communicateand team work, inspiring them tosucceed in all walks of life. That, inessence, is what this service is all about– a celebration and recognition ofcontinued hard work and determination.St Paul’s has hosted some of history’smost momentous events, and ourstudents performing at such an iconicbuilding in the capital will go down as oneof our proudest moments.”

Lotties Journey: Bridgingthe gap between educationand employment

Name: Lottie Evans Age: 18Job Title: Media & MarketingAssistant - School News GroupCurrently studies at: Canterbury CollegeCurrently Studying: BTEC Level 3 Media Print and JournalismStudied at: Dane Court Grammar SchoolAmbition: Crime Writer - Journalist

We are constantly reminded that we live in difficult times.Finishing an education course is no longer a guarantee offinding work. Employers are stressing the importance ofwork experience now more than ever. But does that meanthat we should abandon the education route for vocationaltraining? Lottie Evans is a shining success story of the cando attitude that is encouraging a new generation ofstudents into education.

Lottie is an aspiring crime journalist, currently workingwithin the media sales department here at School Newsgroup. A distance learning student at Canterbury College,Lottie brings to the team a range of skills, and an ambitionto succeed in the world of media publishing,

"I'm just getting started, but my main role is in sales andmarketing; which involves developing relationships andnetworking with local businesses. It's difficult at times, butexciting at the same time".

However, Lottie has ambitions outside of sales and has alsobeen published -

"I've always wanted to write, and at school it's the thing Iwas best at. And looking into what I wanted to do in thefuture, Journalism was the course that sparked my interestat college." Lottie credits this drive to her current studiesat Canterbury College, and also her current work here atSchool News Group.

When asked why she decided to complete her studies viadistance learning, Lottie was very vocal about theimportance of combining studies with real world workexperience, in order to be successful

"I think it's very important that people understand howvaluable it is to have a good mixture of education and workpractice, it helps you start off in work with a better

understanding of what's going on around you. Distancelearning works for me because I find it easier to work fromhome because I don't get distracted. I have weekly tutorialswith my lecturer and pick up work from the college on aweekly basis".

Lottie is published within this edition of Canterbury SchoolNews - give her some feedback [email protected]

Christopher Smith, 15, who attends SirRoger Manwoods in Sandwich has written areview on War Horse the play performedat The National Theatre in London’s WestEnd.

“War Horse is a fabulous play, adapted fromthe book written by Michael Morpurgo tofit the beautiful stage in the New LondonTheatre. The use of props to make thehorses come to life was fantastic, thepuppeteers blended in well with the horse’scolour so that you didn’t notice them. It isnormal that, when a book is turned into aplay, the connection between twocharacters is somewhat lessened. However, this wasn’t the case with War Horse; thelove and affection between Albert and Joeyfrom the book had been smartly transferredby Nick Stafford onto the stage without theconnection between the two charactersbeing weakened. Those final scenes of theshow sent even the toughest men teary eyed”

overall I rate War Horse a 6.

“The children start off by looking at Africa as a continent andnot a country, we then look at the different countries andenvironments and also the animals that live there. Thestudents would then look at the differences between thecountries and the different cultures that exist there, comparing these with life in the UK.”In order to celebrate and showcase the good work that thechildren do; students participate in an “Africa Day” wherebydifferent events and activities are held during the day includingAfrican Drumming and Mask building.Brandon McGinty (pictured with his mask), age 10, lovedlearning about African culture - his mother Gemma Griffithssaid that“Brandon loved learning about Africa, and in particular theAfrican Masks, he was really excited when he came home andtold us how much he had enjoyed these lessons”.The childrens work is showcased within the school for all tosee.

Eggs-cellent Creativity InspiresChildren at

Holy TrinityPupils at Holy Trinity, Margate, were shockedand ‘eggs-cited’ as they walked into school andsaw a giant egg partially hidden on the bankwithin their school grounds. What was it? Whohad put it there? What could it be for?Of course none of it was a surprise to the staffat the school. It is all part of their creative driveto engage and inspire children at their school.“In fact,” explained Head teacher Mr Short “allthe talk and rumours were ‘eggs-actly’ what weplanned! Anything that gets their mindsthinking and puzzling is just the start for the

teachers to build on.”That is precisely what they have been doing all week. Withsome classes going up to investigate and others writingelaborate stories and talking about the egg all children havebeen getting innovative with the subject. “It has been veryfertile for hatching original ideas” quipped Mr Short. The school, which less than a year ago got a resounding‘Good’ in its OFSTED inspection, is putting creativity at theheart of its learning. With a new curriculum being rolled outacross the country from September Holy Trinity intends toblaze a trail to develop such thinking at the centre of itsapproach. The school confidently believes this will take itfrom good to Outstanding.

Handball was one of the most popular sports at theLondon Olympics and it is certainly beginning to make amark on Thanet. With the newly formed ThanetHandball Club up and running, it is great to see manyschools are also getting into the spirit of this fast movingand exciting sport. The Club had its first match at KentUniversity last weekend. On the evidence of the recentPrimary Handball Championships, the talent pool for thefuture is very good indeed. The Primary event was a wonder of co-operation. It wasorganised by School Sport Organizer at Chatham andClarendon GS Dave Walton, who is also HonoraryChairman of Thanet Handball Club. Using contacts fromhis previous role as an SSCO in Thanet, he was able toget portable goals from Dane Court and use the sportshall at Ellington&Hereson to ensure a quality experiencefor all those who took part. The referee was MattEverett, Hon Secretary and Coach at Thanet HandballClub. Sixth form sports leaders fromChatham&Clarendon GS ensured the smooth running of

The final was excellent. Upton `A` worked hard tocompete with an accomplished St Peter’s side. Theyconceded an early goal, but then held out and had chancesto level. In the end St Peter’s were just too good andscored to late goals to run out easy winners 3-0. They
