Getting Ready for the Green Grand Prix

Technology students in Margate have lined up on the starting grid with their green car ready for action at

the historic British motor sport circuit at Goodwood. The Hartsdown Academy team who are working on the eco-kart with support

from Cummins Power Generation engineers took their mean machine to the famous race circuit in West Sussex.Greenpower members gave invaluable advice and suggested improvements to the design to make the car quicker and more aerodynamic ahead of the inter-school challenge race days on June 19 at Goodwood and July 9 in Essex.Following amendments to the car, it was tried out on the circuit. Each of the five student drivers aged from 11-14 enjoyed the challenge of the 2.4 mile circuit, with each of them having the chance for proper racetrack experience since the start of the project in 2014.They put the battery powered kart they designed through its paces to test performance, durability, ride quality, build and then evaluate their findings to fine tune the vehicle. As well as the nuts and bolts construction of the chassis, cockpit and power unit compartment, students also investigated the marketing side of the project and

learnt how to create branding and advertising for the after school green car club and for the vehicle itself.Brian Weatherley, CPGK community liaison partner, said: “CPGK and Hartsdown staff and students left the day highly motivated and ready for the next challenge”.One of the engineering team students said: “My experience in Greenpower is amazing. It was fun to meet and work with new people to make the promotional car. I have gained skills like constructing new items from scratch, painting, wiring and taking wheels apart.”The project is run as part of the STEM initiative at Hartsdown Academy (Science Technology Engineering

Maths).Head of Technology Sonya Cottrell said: “Building a car from scratch is a great way for our students to learn about the many and varied aspects of engineering and technology; this project will also expose them to the type of creative thinking needed to market and promote the project and the car.“We are fortunate to have expertise from the Cummins team on board to support us as we guide and inspire our green car team.” Five students were accompanied at Goodwood by two teachers and staff from CPGK.

news from Newington

Centre Stage London

Children put on a capital show to celebrate a term of

exploring the sights, sounds and importance of London as one of the world’s leading cities.Around 600 pupils from reception classes to Year 6 from Newington community primary school have made a series of visits to London to inspire their learning. And their wide and varied classroom work and experiences were staged in a high energy show celebrating the culture and heritage of London. Each year group performed their own tribute in music, dance and song after staff opened the show with a song of their own (much to the surprise of the cheering pupils packed in the school theatre). Each pupil wore specially-made tee-shirts bearing a design relating to London – the Gherkin building, fashion, music, The Blitz, London transport, royalty, rats and the black

death and the London Eye.Outside the theatre Buckingham Palace gates had been constructed with the palace behind, guarded by soldiers in their bearskin hats guarding the palace, while a life-size effigy of a smiling, waving Queen was in the reception area, together with models of famous landmarks.Pupils and staff (including teachers Warwick Eldred and Tim Knight dressed as Cockney musical duo Chas and Dave) posed for photos with Her Majesty. The show was directed by assistant head teacher Becky Andrews who said: “Pupils and staff worked incredibly hard to create this show. They deserve so much praise for all their fantastic efforts.”Head Teacher Cliff Stokes added: “The show was a brilliant way to end a term where we focussed on London’s heritage and culture. And our children really learnt so much about the capital city of the country.”

Singing their way through their times tables all adds up to sum fun for

children in Ramsgate.Pupils at Newington community primary school are in fine voice as they learn their Maths via specially written songs to help them understand and remember the information.Head of Music Warwick Eldred sets the time table tunes to various styles of music and his latest in the style of Cockney stars Chas and Dave even won praise from them.Mr Eldred contacted the music legends telling then he was using their ‘Rockney’ (Cockney rock) style for inspiration and piano player Chas Hodges replied saying it was an amazing idea and wished every success. He even said he hoped to visit the school to see the songs in action.Mr Eldred has also created

videos using images to prompt the singalong learning, with pupils of all ages singing in class and also looking and learning using the videos on their school computers and tablets. These are accessible via video and social media and is a way of engaging families into the children’s learning. The Chas and Dave video for the six times table features animated graphics of the pair singing, plus images of London, which is the school topic for the term. These include pictures of The Queen, Tottenham Hotspur FC, actor Michael Caine, Winston Churchill, Peckham’s Del Boy and Rodney from Only Fools and Horses, Swinging London 60s icon Twiggy, and Mary Poppins. This song finishes in true Cockney style with “have a butchers why don’t ya, at the six times tables song.Mr Eldred said: “Children

love to sing and using this to prompt their learning is an effective and fun way of delivering information.”Head Teacher Cliff Stokes said: “This is just one of the varied learning aides we use.“We have songs for all our core values - for example our school song reflects our ethos Ambition, Achievement, Aspiration.“Creative learning is successful and it is something we embrace wherever possible.”

St Ethelberts Catholic Primary Summer Fair was a huge hit

The PTFA and friends worked hard to bring St Ethelbert’s Catholic Primary School a fun filled programme of

events for their summer fair Making a debut appearance was the Bolton Agility team, the arena was packed with hairy gymnasts but of the four legged kind! Hairy McClairy move over, the Bolton Agility Team are trained dogs of the highest caliber, members of which have performed at Crufts.

Other four legged friends at the fair included the beautiful Nelsons Park Ponies. Rides were available throughout the day, and ponies were happily ‘on hoof’ for patting. We were always on target for having a good time, but to make sure Quex Park Archery was there for all to practice their Robin Hood skills. Crafty little and big ones made something in the arts and craft tent and were

surprised to find trophies and fairy doors! The princess and superhero parlour had face painting and glitter tattoos and plenty of other surprises too. Traditional fair favourites including, coconut shy, hoopla, lolly island and wine or water to name but a few and a variety of exciting new stalls and games too. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution kindly came along, to remind all about coastal safety. All singing, all dancing St Ethelberts pupils were on hand to wow and entertain throughout the day, and after all that running around, a nice cuppa, some award winning cake or strawberries and cream were available in the tea tent. Everyone came along, with their pennies, friends, parents, grandparents, and enjoyed a great day out and all the fun of the fair and fantastically made over £2,500

news from UptonChildren’s Wartime Experience

A group of schoolchildren in Broadstairs have time-travelled back to the days of wartime Britain as part of their

learning. The Year 6 pupils at Upton juniors explored what life was like for their contemporaries in the dark days of World War 2.They took on the role of evacuees, children and families who left their homes for safety as cities became increasingly dangerous places under heavy bombing and fire storms. The Upton team learnt about how people adapted to life, schooling and work in wartime, including safety procedures and rationing.

Retired teacher Peter O’Sullivan led the year group who were also drilled on the parade ground into a team unit as part of the experience, which also illustrated how community spirit kept the nation united.

Round-upjunior schoolWho Will Triumph at Schools’ Waterloo?

A special schools relay race is being held to mark the 101st anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

Upton Juniors Head of School Dave Walker was asked by former town mayor Rosalind Binks during her final days in office if the school could host and organise the event on Waterloo Day, Saturday 18th June, using funding secured from the Waterloo 200 Legacy Fund.Mr Walker said: “All Thanet primary schools are invited to compete for The Waterloo Trophy competition that will be held on our playing fields. The event commemorates the Battle of Waterloo and will be held every year as close to the official date as possible.’“There are four races – Year 3 and 4 boys, Year 3 and 4 girls, Year 5 and 6 boys, Year 5 and 6 girls, and schools can enter as many teams of

three runners as they like.“Each pupil will run roughly 800m round the course, pass the baton to the second runner who does the same and then onto the final runner.“All runners will receive medals regardless of where their team of three finishes, and there are four large trophies for the winning teams.”

What an honour for School News Group, after the privilege of being involved in Young Enterprise a few

months ago, we were asked back again, this time for Young Enterprise in a day at Kent College. I really enjoy going to Kent College, everyone is so welcoming and polite, this time was no different. We spent the day with the fabulous year 10’s. In the morning we were each given a small group to work with and advise. The groups had to spilt themselves into roles, from Managing Director and Secretary to Sales and Marketing. Each team had to come up with a team name and a name for the computer console they

had to sell, they had to make appointments with theSupplier and bank manager, roles expertly played by fellow business people. During the course of a very busy morning the teams wrote business plans, customer service plans and built a prototype of their console. It was a real joy to work with such a receptive group who were buoyed after visits to the supplier and bank manager. During the afternoon our role changed to that of judges, which I personally think is the hardest of the roles. Each team had a display stand showing off marketing material and prototypes, which we viewed and we were able to question the groups on their product. Following this, each team pitched to the room, speaking about their teamwork, sales and marketing and displaying their success. I speak for all the judges when I say yet again how impressed we were with the standard of the trade stands and pitches, especially given the limited time the teams had to produce their product. It was so difficult to choose the winners in each category which I think speaks volumes of the standard of the pupils. Thank you to Young Enterprise, Kent College and its staff and pupils for a fantastic experience and a very enjoyable day.

Comm

unity

This month we are going to focus on how you can become an effective and productive employee. By working on the following two skills you will become a valuable employee:

Reliability: Employers love people who are reliable because they are easier to manage. To be seen as reliable you need to show up on time, be conscientious and do what you say you are going to do. You mustalso complete your tasks correctly, on time and to a good standard. And a reliable

person never make excuses!

Organisation: Being organised helps you stay on top of multiple tasks, be flexible and help your colleagues when necessary. It also helps to reduce stress when work gets busy. You will often find that people who are reliable are also organised! The most important thing about being organised is to keep it simple. Learn to set goals and then use these to prioritise your activities.

Next, spend time planning your daily activities. This helps you understand what tasks you need to complete each day, what resources you need to do them and when they need doing. Finally, make a to-do list - and check it regularly!

Beaches Special

Thanet has many miles of coastline, that brings residents and visitors together. In order to promote the best possible experience when enjoying Thanet’s beaches, Good behaviors when using Thanet beaches:

• Lifeguards, beach and promenade workers are there for your safety and enjoyment and should be treated with respect

• If you bring it to the beach take it when you leave!

• Never bury your litter or used barbecues in the sand

• • • • • • • • • •

• Loud music and foul language affect the enjoyment of other beach users. Just don’t do it!

• Beach games are encouraged, provided that they do not cause nuisance to others. Large groups of footballers and heavy balls are not permitted. Be aware of your surroundings and of smaller children.

• Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs

• Damaging any beach or promenade equipment is an offence and we will prosecute

• Overnight camping is not permitted on Thanet beaches or open spaces.

Events on BeachesDid you know that you need permission to hold an event on the Council land including beaches. Anything more than a close friends or family group or where you advertise for people to come along would require this permission. A number of large groups have applied to hold events on the beaches this summer. If these are given permission to go ahead, then you know that TDC and emergency services have looked at all of the safety risks

and worked with the organizers to reduce the impact on other beach users. If people hold unauthorized events the Council, emergency services and other partners will use all the powers open to them to prevent them in advance or stop them on the day.

Respecting your NeighboursSummer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. Summer in Thanet is also the time for barbeques and parties. You might be a party animal, and that’s fine as long as you don’t intrude or impose on your neighbours

If you are having a party, you may want to invite the neighbours. This does several things. It shows that you are a friendly person, it allows you to get to know your neighbours better, and you are much less likely to have complaints.

If you are inconsiderate to your neighbours when having parties or there is conduct that has caused, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress then steps can be taken to confiscate your equipment, ban you from certain behaviours, fine you and undertake court proceedings. So please consider your neighbours…

Enjoy the summer, the beach and the sea but

remember - stay safe!
