Synopsis

FIRST ACT

Compact Disc 1

Scene OneIn the Thebaid desert, on the banks of the Nile1 Palemon and the Coenobite monks await the return of Athanaël from Alexandria.2 He arrives with the news that debauchery reigns in the city, led by the courtesan Thaïs.3 He recalls how as a youth he had been tempted by Thaïs but had resisted, had joined the Coenobite order, and now wishes tp

reclaim Thaïs from sin.4 Palemon warns him to shun the company of worldly folk. The Coenobites pray as they disperse to their huts for the night.5 Alone, Athanaël has a vision of the near-naked Thaïs on stage as Venus, from which he wakes in terror.6 He resolves to depart on his mission to save Thaïs. Waking the monks, he proclaims this to them.7 Palemon repeats his warning but Athanaël is engrossed in his plans.

Scene TwoThe terrace of Nicias's house high above Alexandria, leading to a great hall which is laid for a banquet8 Prelude9 Athanaël, in his monk’s habit, arrives to see Nicias, a philosopher and a friend of his youth.10 He is filled with loathing for the corruption of his native city.11 Nicias, entering with two slave-girls, greets Athanaël warmly. When asked about Thaïs, Nicias says he has sold everything to

buy her love for a week, which is almost up. She will arrive for the banquet after her evening performance. Athanaël revealsthe purpose of his visit and asks for suitable clothes to join the banquet.

12 As he talks to Nicias the slaves anoint and adorn him. He will not take off his habit so they cover it with a soft flowing robe.13 Thaïs’s entourage and Nicias's friends arrive and are shown into the banqueting hall. Finally Thaïs herself appears.14 Nicias sadly welcomes her for the last time. Same philosophers emerge from the hall with Athanaël, who gazes sternly at Thaïs.15 She enquires who he is and he comes over and harangues her, as a crowd of surprised guests gathers round.

16 Thaïs playfully invites him to join their group.17 He replies fiercely that he will leave her alone for now, but will come to her palace to bring her salvation. As she starts

to disrobe in preparation for her mime performance, he flees.

ACT TWO

Scene OneThaïs’s boudoir 18 Thaïs is feeling uneasy and looks into her mirror for confirmation of her beauty.19 She is afraid of the effects of time on her looks and invokes Venus to reassure her.20 She greets Athanaël, who has entered silently. He fears the snare of her beauty but tells her he has come to conquer her. She

mocks him, but is perturbed by his enthusiastic promise of eternal life.21 Trembling, she asks him to initiate her into the mystery of divine love. Athanaël, tempted, prays to the Lord for protection from

Thaïs's charms, while she confidently invokes Venus.22 Suddenly regaining his composure, Athanaël tears away his robe to reveal his monk's tunic, and violently calls on her to repent.

She is terrified.23 She pleads for mercy; as he again promises eternal life she begins to weaken. Nicias's voice is heard pleading for Thaïs to go

to him again, but she scorns him. Athanaël says he will wait outside her house until dawn, but she defies him and he leaves asshe throws herself down in a mixture of sobs and hysterical laughter.

Scene TwoA square in front of Thaïs’s palace1 Sounds of revelry are heard from Nicias's house as Thaïs comes out of her palace and finds Athanaël asleep.

She tells him she has seen the light and asks for guidance.2 He says he will take her to stay in a cell at Mother Albine's monastery until Christ comes to claim her, but first

she must put fire to all her worldly goods. She agrees but wants to take with her a statuette of Eros.3 She still confuses earthly and divine love. In a rage, Athanaël smashes the statuette and they leave.4 Nicias and his companions come out of his house. He has won back at gambling many times what

he had paid for Thaïs's company, and orders further revelry.5 Dances: Divertissement (Orchestra)6 A new performer, the Charmer, appears and Nicias bids her dance.7 The slave-girls sing and play as she performs her dance.8 More general dancing: Divertissement (Orchestra)9 Nicias sees Athanaël coming from Thaïs’s palace. The guests mock him, but he reveals Thaïs to them, in a

coarse tunic and with her hair unbraided. As smoke bellows from her palace he is ready to take her away, but their way is barred by a crowd.

10 Nicias and the crowd of parasites try to prevent them from leaving. Flames are now rising from Thaïs's palace. The crowd threatens violence, until Nicias throws gold which they eagerly fall upon, as Thaïs and Athanaël escape.

THIRD ACT

Scene OneThe oasis11 Nearing the end of their trek through the desert, Thaïs begs for a moment's pause. Athanaël drives her on, but she collapses.12 He is seized with compassion and goes to bring fruit and water, pointing out the convent nearby.13 Alone for amoment, Thaïs blesses Athanaël and the suffering he has put her through.14 She gratefully receives the fruit and water, and then Albine and the White Maids are heard approaching in prayer.15 Athanaël greets them and introduces Thaïs, who is embraced by Albine.16 Athanaël and Thaïs take leave of one another, and he suddenly realises that he will never see her again on earth. When she and

the sisters have gone, he calls out inconsolably.

Scene TwoThe Thebaid desert17 The Coenobites comment fearfully on the evening storm which is brewing. Palemon bids them take their food into their huts. He

says Athanaël has been back for three weeks but has not appeared among them to eat or drink.18 The wasting Athanaël comes out and they leave him alone, but he detains Palemon and confesses that he is obsessed with volup-

tuous thoughts of Thaïs. Palemon reminds him of his advice to shun the world, then leaves him.19 After praying, Athanaël lies down to sleep. Soon he sees a seductive vision of Thaïs. When he becomes delirious she cackles

with laughter and disappears. In another vision, Athanaël sees the White Maids kneeling around Thaïs as she lies dying undera fig-tree.

20 Athanaël is distraught and rushes off through the thunder and lightning to be with Thaïs.

Scene ThreeThe garden of Albine's monastery21 Albine and the sisters pray over Thaïs’s motionless body.22 Albine greets Athanaël and as the sisters move apart he sees Thaïs and falls to his knees, calling her name in anguish.23 Thaïs comes to and recognizes him. She harks back to their desert journey and does not hear him as he pours out his love for

her. While he continues in the same vein she has a vision of the heaven which awaits her. Finally she expires.HUGH GRAHAM, 1995

ERSTER AKT

Erste SzeneIn der Wüste Thebais, an den Ufern des Nils. 1 Palémon und die Zönobitermönche erwarten Athanaëls Rückkehr aus Alexandria.2 Er bringt ihnen die Nachricht, dass in der Stadt die Zügellosigkeit herrsche, angeführt von der Kurtisane Thaïs.3 Er erinnert sich daran, wie er in seiner Jugend von Thaïs in Versuchung geführt worden war, ihr jedoch widerstanden hatte und

in den Zönobiterorden eingetreten war; nun möchte er Thaïs von der Sünde abbringen. 4 Palémon warnt ihn vor dem Umgang mit weltlich gesinnten Menschen. Die Zönobiter beten, während sie sich für die Nacht in

Zweite SzeneDie Terrasse von Nicias’ Haus hoch über Alexandria, dahinter der Festsaal, der für ein Bankett vorbereitet ist.8 Orchestervorspiel9 Athanaël kommt, in seinen Mönchshabit gekleidet, um seinen Jugendfreund Nicias, einen Philosophen, aufzusuchen.10 Er ist voll Abscheu vor dem moralischen Verfall seiner Heimatstadt.11 Nicias tritt mit zwei jungen Sklavinnen auf und begrüßt Athanaël herzlich. Als dieser sich bei ihm nach Thaïs erkundigt, erzählt

Nicias, dass er alles verkauft habe, um ihre Liebe für eine Woche zu kaufen, die nun beinahe vorüber sei. Sie werde nach ihrerAbendvor stel lung zum Bankett erscheinen. Athanaël enthüllt den Zweck seines Besuchs und bittet um passende Kleider, umam Bankett teilnehmen zu können.

12 Während er sich mit Nicias unterhält, salben und schmücken ihn die Sklavinnen. Er will seine Mönchskleidung nicht ablegen, daher verhüllen sie diese mit einem weichen, fließenden Gewand.

13 Thaïs’ Entourage und Nicias’ Freunde treffen ein und werden in den Bankettsaal geführt. Schließlich erscheint Thaïs selbst. 14 Nicias heißt sie traurig zum letzten Mal willkommen. Einige Philosophen kommen mit Athanaël aus dem Saal.

Dieser starrt Thaïs streng an.15 Sie erkundigt sich, wer er sei. Er nähert sich ihr und hält ihr eine Strafpredigt, während sich eine Schar überraschter Gäste um

sie versammelt.16 Thaïs lädt ihn schelmisch ein, sich ihr und ihren Freunden anzuschließen. 17 Er antwortet heftig, dass er sie fürs erste in Frieden lassen werde, jedoch in ihren Palast kommen werde, um ihr das Heil zu

bringen. Als sie beginnt, sich für ihre Vorführung zu ent kleiden, flüchtet er.

ZWEITER AKT

Erste SzeneThaïs’ Boudoir 18 Thaïs ist beunruhigt und sieht in den Spiegel, um sich ihrer Schönheit zu versichern. 19 Sie hat Angst davor, dass sich die Jahre auf ihr Aussehen auswirken, und ruft Venus um Beruhigung an.20 Sie begrüßt Athanaël, der lautlos eingetreten ist. kommt, und fordert sie ungestüm zur Reue auf. Sie hat schreckliche Angst.23 Sie fleht um Gnade; als er ihr neuerlich ewiges Leben verspricht, beginnt sie, schwach zu werden. Man hört Nicias’ Stimme,

der Thaïs anfleht, wieder zu ihm zu kommen, doch sie verhöhnt ihn. Athanaël sagt, er werde bis zum Morgengrauen vor ihremHaus warten, doch sie trotzt ihm, und er geht, während sie sich in einer Mischung aus Schluchzen und hysterischem Gelächterzu Boden wirft.

Zweite SzeneDer Platz vor Thaïs’ Palast1 Aus Nicias’ Haus hört man lärmendes Treiben, als Thaïs aus ihrem Palast kommt und Athanaël schlafend vorfindet. Sie teilt

ihm mit, dass ihr die Augen geöffnet wurden und bittet um geistlichen Rat.2 Er sagt, dass er sie in das Kloster der Mutter Albine bringen werde, wo sie bleiben solle, bis Christus sie zu sich ruft, doch

zunächst müsse sie all ihren weltlichen Besitz in Brand stecken. Sie ist dazu bereit, will aber eine Statuette des Eros mit-nehmen.

3 Noch immer verwechselt sie irdische und göttliche Liebe. Wütend zerbricht Athanaël die Statuette, worauf sie abgehen.4 Nicias kommt mit seinen Freunden aus dem Haus. Er hat beim Glücksspiel ein Vielfaches dessen zurückgewonnen, was er für

Thaïs’ Gesellschaft bezahlt hatte, und ordnet weitere Festlichkeiten an.5 Tänze: Divertissement (Orchester)6 Eine neue Künstlerin, La Charmeuse, erscheint, und Nicias befiehlt ihr zu tanzen.7 Die Sklavinnen singen und spielen zu ihrer Tanzdarbietung. 8 Weiterer allgemeiner Tanz: Divertissement (Orchester)9 Nicias sieht Athanaël aus Thaïs’ Palast kommen. Die Gäste verspotten ihn, doch er führt ihnen Thaïs vor, in eine grobe Tunika

gekleidet und mit aufgelöstem Haar. Als aus dem Palast Rauch quillt, ist er bereit, sie fortzubringen, doch die Menge versperrtihnen den Weg.

10 Nicias und die schmarotzende Menge versuchen, sie am Gehen zu hindern. Aus Thaïs’ Palast schlagen mittlerweile Flammen.Die Menge droht handgreiflich zu werden, bis Nicias Gold unter sie wirft, auf das sie sich gierig stürzt, während Thaïs undAthanaël entkommen.

DRITTER AKT

Erste SzeneDie Oase11 Sie nähern sich dem Ziel ihrer Reise durch die Wüste, als Thaïs um eine kurze Rast bittet. Athanaël treibt sie weiter, doch sie

bricht zusammen.12 Er wird von Mitleid ergriffen und geht ihr Obst und Wasser holen, nachdem er sie auf das nahe gelegene Kloster hingewiesen

hat.13 Während sie einen Moment allein ist, segnet Thaïs Athanaël für das Leiden, das er sie durchmachen lässt.14 Sie ist dankbar für das Obst und das Wasser. Dann hört man Albine und die Weißen Jungfrauen betend näherkommen. 15 Athanaël begrüßt sie und stellt ihnen Thaïs vor, die von Albine umarmt wird.16 Athanaël und Thaïs nehmen voneinander Abschied, und ihm wird plötzlich bewusst, dass er sie auf Erden nicht mehr wiederse-

hen wird. Als sie und die Schwestern gegangen sind, schreit er untröstlich auf.

Zweite SzeneDie Wüste Thebais17 Die Zönobiten sind besorgt wegen des sich zusammenbrauenden Unwetters. Palémon befiehlt ihnen, ihr Essen in ihre Hütten

mitzunehmen. Er berichtet, dass Athanaël zwar schon seit drei Wochen wieder zurück sei, jedoch nicht erschienen sei, umgemeinsam mit ihnen zu essen oder zu trinken.

18 Als der ausgezehrte Athanaël herauskommt, lassen sie ihn alleine, doch er hält Palémon zurück und gesteht, dass er von wol-lüstigen Gedanken an Thaïs besessen sei. Bevor er geht, erinnert ihn Palémon an seinen Rat, die Welt zu meiden.

19 Nach einem Gebet legt sich Athanaël zum Schlafen nieder. Bald sieht er eine verführerische Vision von Thaïs. Als er zu fantasierenbeginnt, lacht sie meckernd und verschwindet. In einer anderen Vision sieht Athanaël die Weißen Jungfrauen um Thaïs knien,während sie unter einem Feigenbaum im Sterben liegt.

20 Verzweifelt eilt Athanaël durch Donner und Blitz davon, um bei Thaïs zu sein.

Dritte SzeneIm Garten von Albines Kloster21 Albine und die Schwestern beten über der regungslosen Thaïs.22 Albine begrüßt Athanaël, und als die Schwestern zur Seite rücken, sieht er Thaïs und fällt, gequält ihren Namen ausrufend, auf

die Knie.23 Thaïs kommt zu Bewusstsein und erkennt ihn. Sie erinnert sich an ihre gemeinsame Reise durch die Wüste und hört ihn nicht,

als er ihr überströmend seine Liebe erklärt. Während er weiter davon spricht, hat sie eine Vision vom Himmel, der sie erwartet.Schließlich haucht sie ihr Leben aus.

Premère Scène 1Dans le désert de la Thébaïde, sur les bords du Nil 1 Palémon et les cénobites attendent le retour d’Athanaël qui revient d’Alexandrie. 2 Il arrive avec la nouvelle que la débauche règne dans la ville et que la courtisane Thaïs mène la danse.3 Il se rappelle que jeune homme il fut tenté par Thaïs mais sut résister et qu’il rejoignit ensuite I’ordre des cénobites.

Il voudrait maintenant arracher Thaïs au péché. 4 Palémon le met en garde de fuir la compagnie des gens du monde. Les cénobites prient tandis qu’ils se dispersent

afin de regagner leurs huttes pour la nuit.5 Seul, Athanaël a une vision de Thaïs demi-nue, jouant sur scène le rôle de Vénus. Il se réveille en proie à la terreur. 6 Il se résout à partir pour entreprendre sa mission de sauver Thaïs. Il réveille les moines pour leur en faire part.7 Palémon lui répète sa mise en garde, mais Athanaël est absorbé par ses plans.

Deuxième Scène La terrasse de la maison de Nicias, surplombant Alexandrie et donnant sur une grande salle préparée en vue d’un banquet.8 Prélude (orchestre )9 Athanaël, portant son cilice, arrive pour voir Nicias, un philosophe et ami de jeunesse.10 Il est écœuré par la corruption régnant dans sa ville natale.11 Nicias qui entre avec deux esclaves accueille Athanaël avec chaleur. Quand ce dernier lui pose des questions à propos

de Thaïs, Nicias répond qu’il a tout vendu pour acheter I’amour de celle-ci pendant une semaine qui est d’ailleurs presque terminée. Thaïs arrivera au banquet après sa représentation du soir. Athanaël révèle le but de sa visite et demande des vêtements pour se joindre au banquet.

12 Pendant qu’il parle à Nicias, les esclaves I’oignent et le parent. Comme il refuse de se séparer de son cilice, elles le recouvrent d’une robe soyeuse et flottante.

13 L'entourage de Thaïs et les amis de Nicias arrivent, on les fait entrer dans la salle de banquet. Finalement Thaïs fait elle-même son apparition.

14 Nicias I’accueille pour la dernière fois, plein de tristesse. Quelques philosophes sortent de la salle en compagnie d’Athanaël qui fixe Thaïs d’un œil sévère.

15 Comme elle demande qui iI est, il s’approche et la harangue tandis qu’une foule d’invités surpris se rassemble autour d’eux.16 Thaïs, I’air enjoué I’invité à se joindre aux invités.17 Il répond farouchement qu’il va la laisser tranquille pour le moment, mais qu’il viendra la voir dans son palais pour

lui apporter le salut. Comme elle commence à se dévêtir pour se préparer au spectacle de mime qu'elle va donner, il s’enfuit.

DEUXIÈME ACTE

Première ScèneLe boudoir de Thaïs18 Thaïs qui est inquiète regarde dans son miroir pour y trouver confirmation de sa beauté.19 Elle craint que le temps n’inflige ses atteintes à sa beauté et invoque Vénus pour que la déesse la rassure.20 Elle accueille Athanaël qui est entré en silence. Il craint d’être pris au piège de sa beauté, mais il lui dit qu’il est venu la

soumettre. Bien qu’elle se moque de lui, elle est troublée par I’enthousiasme avec lequel il lui promet la vie éternelle.21 Tremblante, elle lui demande de I’initier au mystère de I’amour divin. Athanaël, tenté, prie Dieu de le protéger des

charmes de Thaïs, tandis qu’elle invoque avec confiance Vénus.22 Retrouvant soudain son calme, Athanaël déchire sa robe pour mettre à jour sa tunique de moine, exigeant avec violence

qu’elle se repente. Elle est terrifiée.23 Elle implore le pardon. Tandis qu’il lui promet de nouveau la vie éternelle, elle commence à faiblir. La voix de Nicias

se fait entendre, il supplie Thaïs de revenir mais elle dédaigne ses prières. Athanaël lui dit qu’il I’attendra devant sa maison jusqu’à I’aube, mais elle le défie. Il s’en va alors qu’elle se jette au sol, en proie à un mélange de sanglots et de rire hystérique.

Deuxième ScèneUne place devant le palais de Thaïs1 Des bruits de fête venant de la demeure de Nicias se font entendre tandis que Thaïs sort de son palais pour trouver Athanaël

endormi. Elle lui dit qu’elle est convertie et lui demande de la guider.2 Il lui dit qu’il va I’emmener au couvent de mère Albine pour qu’elle y séjourne dans une cellule jusqu’à ce que le Christ viennent

la réclamer, mais que, d’abord, elle doit mettre le feu à tous ses biens terrestres. Elle accepte mais voudrait emmener une stat-uette d’Éros.

3 Elle confond encore amour terrestre et amour divin. En rage Athanaël fracasse la statuette, puis ils s’en vont.4 Nicias et ses compagnons sortent de sa maison. II a gagné au jeu une somme plusieurs fois égale à celle qu’il avait payée pour

avoir la compagnie de Thaïs et il ordonne d’autres festivités.5 Danses: Divertissement ( orchestre )6 Une nouvelle artiste, la Charmeuse, apparaît et Nicias lui ordonne de danser.7 Les esclaves chantent et jouent de la musique tandis qu’elle interprète sa danse. 8 Autre danse générale : Divertissement ( orchestre )9 Nicias voit Athanaël venir du palais de Thaïs. Comme les invités se moquent de lui, ce dernier leur fait voir Thaïs vêtue d’un cil-

ice, les cheveux défaits. La fumée s’échappe à grosses bouffées du palais, il est prêt à I’emmener, mais la foule leur barre lechemin.

10 Nicias et la foule de parasites essaient de les empêcher de partir. Ce sont maintenant des flammes qui s’élèvent du palais deThaïs. La foule profère des menaces pleines de violence, jusqu’au moment où Nicias lui lance de I’or sur lequel elle se jetteavidement, tandis que Thaïs et Athanaël s’échappent.

TROISIÈME ACTE

Première ScèneL'oasis11 Vers la fin de leur voyage à travers le désert, Thaïs demande à s’arrêter un instant. Athanaël l’entraîne et elle s’évanouit.12 Saisi de compassion, il va chercher des fruits et de I’eau, lui montrant le couvent qui est proche.13 Seule pendant un instant, Thaïs bénit Athanaël et les souffrances qu’il lui a fait endurer.14 Elle reçoit avec reconnaissance les fruits et I’eau, puis on entend Albine et les filles blanches qui s’approchent

en train de prier.15 Athanaël les salue et leur présente Thaïs qu’Albine embrasse.16 Athanaël et Thaïs se font leurs adieux et il se rend soudain compte qu’il ne la reverra plus jamais sur cette terre.

Lorsque Thaïs et les sœurs sont parties, il I’appelle inconsolable.

Deuxième ScèneLe désert de la Thébaïde17 Les cénobites évoquent avec crainte I’orage qui menace d’éclater dans la soirée. Palémon leur ordonne d’emmener

leur repas dans leurs huttes. Il dit qu’Athanaël qui est de retour depuis trois semaines n’a pas fait d’apparition pour prendre boisson ou repas en leur compagnie.

18 Comme Athanaël amaigri sort, ils le laissent seul, mais celui-ci retient Palémon pour lui confesser qu’il est obsédé par de voluptueuses rêveries ayant pour objet Thaïs. Palémon lui rappelle son conseil de fuir le monde, puis il le quitte.

19 Après avoir prié, Athanaël s’étend pour dormir. Il a bientôt une vision de Thaïs en train de le séduire. Lorsqu’il est pris de délire, elle ricane et disparaît. Au cours d’une autre vision, Athanaël voit les filles blanches agenouillées autour de Thaïs tandis qu’elle meurt sous un figuier.

20 Athanaël éperdu se rue à travers les éclairs et le tonnerre pour être auprès de Thaïs.

Troisième ScèneLe jardin du couvent d’Albine21 Albine et les sœurs prient sur le corps immobile de Thaïs.22 Albine accueille Athanaël. Comme les sœurs s’écartent, il voit Thaïs et tombe à génoux, I’appelant avec angoisse.23 Thaïs reprend conscience et le reconnaît. Elle retourne par Ia pensée à leur voyage dans le désert et ne I’entend pas

lorsqu’il exprime I’amour qu’il ressent pour elle. Tandis qu’il continue sur la même veine, elle a une vision du paradis qui I’attend. Finalement, elle expire.

ACTE PREMIER

Scène 1

La Thébaïde

( Les cabanes des Cénobites, aux bords duNil. Ce n’est pas encore la fin du jour ;douze Cénobites et le vieux Palémon sontassis autour d’une longue table. Au milieu,Palémon préside le frugal et paisible repas.Une place est vide, celle d’Athanaël. )

The Thebaid Desert

(The Coenobites’ huts on the banks of the NiI.It is not yet dusk. Twelve Coenobites and oldPalemon are seated around a long table.Palemon sits in the middle and presides overthe peaceful and frugal meal. One seat remainsempty. It is Athanaël’s.)

FIRST COENOBITEHere is the bread.

PALEMON (rising with fervour)Every morning, the heaven rains down its graceupon my garden, as though it were dew.Praise be to God for the gifts he sends usand let us pray to him that he may keep us in his peace.

THE COENOBITES (in a murmur)May the black fiends of the abyssturn away from our path.(The Coenobites peacefully proceed with their meal.)

3 Hélas ! enfant encore,avant qu’à mon cœur la grâce ait parléje I’ai connue ! ...( plus sombre, plus agité )Un jour, je I’avoue à ma honte,devant son seuil maudit, je me suis arrêté ...mais Dieu m’a préservé de cette courtisaneet j’ai trouvé le calme en ce désert,maudissant le péché que j’aurais pu commettre ! ...Ah ! mon âme est troublée ...La honte de Thaïs et le mal qu’elle faitme causent une trouble peine amère ;et je voudrais gagner cette âme à Dieu !

craignons les pièges de l’Esprit ;voilà ce que nous dit la sagesse éternelle.( La nuit vient peu à peu. )La nuit vient; prions et dormons !

LES CÉNOBITES( avec une crainte mystérieuse, le front courbé et les mains jointes, s’éloignent et se séparent, tout en priant, pour se rendre dans leur cabanes )Prions que les noirs démons de I’abîmes’écartent de notre chemin !Seigneur, bénis le pain et I’eau.Bénis les fruits de nos jardins.Donne-nous le sommeil sans rêveset I’inaltérable repos !( Athanaël s’est étendu devant sa cabane, la tête appuyée sur un petit chevalet de bois, les mains jointes. )

ATHANAËL ( seul, dans I’ombre )O Seigneur, je remets mon âme entre tes mains.

5 ( Il s’endort. Nuit presque noire. Après un instant de calme et de béatitude, au milieu des ténèbres, une blancheur se fait ; dans un brouillard apparaît I’intérieur du théâtre, à Alexandrie ; foule immense sur les gradins. En avant se trouve la scène sur laquelle Thaïs, à demi vétue, mais le visage voilé, mime les amours d’Aphrodite.

ATHANAËL(emerging from his stupor for a short moment)An infamous priestessof the cuIt of Venus...(humbly and gently, as though remembering adistant past)Alas, when I was still a child,before grace had spoken to my heart,I knew her!(sombre and restless)One day, I confess it to my shame;I paused in front of her accursed threshold...but God saved me from this courtesanand I found peace in this desert,cursing the sin I might have committed!Ah, my soul is perturbed!Thaïs’s shame and all her evil deedsfill me with troubled bitter grief:and I should Iike to win her soul for God.

PALÉMON (with simplicity and wisdom)My son, let us never mix with the world;let us resist temptationthus eternal wisdom speaks to us.(Night gradually sets in.)Night is coming: let us pray and sleep!

THE COENOBITES(in mysterious awe, with bent heads and foldedhands, move away and scatter as they pray,each repairing to his own hut)Pray that the black fiends of the abyssturn away from our path.Lord, bless our bread and water.Bless the fruit of our gardens.Grant us dreamless sleepand undisturbed rest.(Athanaël has lain down in front of his hut, resting his head on a small wooden bench and folding his hands.)

ATHANAËL (alone in the darkness)O Lord, I place my soul in thy hands.(He falls asleep. The night is very dark. After a few moments of caIm and bliss, a light dawns in the surrounding shadows; through the mists, the inside of the theatre of Alexandria is seen, its tiers filled by a huge crowd. To the front is the stage upon which Thaïs, scantily dressed, though her face is veiled, is miming

Dans le théâtre d’Alexandrie, immenses acclamations d’enthousiasme très prolongées. Effet extrêmement lointain. On peut distinguer, mais vaguement cependant, le nom de Thaïs hurlé par la foule. Les acclamations augmentent jusqu’à la fin de la vision, la mimique s’accentuant de plus en plus. La vision disparaît subitement; le jour revient. Aurore.)

ATHANAËL( qui s’est éveillé peu à peu se lève complètement ; avec épouvante et colère )Honte! horreur ! ténèbres éternelIes !Seigneur, assiste-moi !( Il s’est jeté a terre et il y reste prosterné. )

6 Toi, qui mis la pitié dans nos âmes,Dieu bon, louange à toi !J’ai compris I’enseignement de I’ombre,je me lève et je pars !( Il s’est relevé avec enthousiasme. )Car je veux délivrer cette femmedes liens de la chair !Dans I’azur, je vois penchés vers elleles anges désolés !N’est-elle pas le souffle de ta bouche, Seigneur ?Ah ! plus elle est coupable et plus je dois la plaindre !Mais, je la sauverai, Seigneur ! 7 Mon fils, ne nous mêlons jamais aux gens du siècle.Voilà la sagesse éternelle !( Les Cénobites qui ont entouré Athanaël I’accompagnent jusqu’à la route, puis, s’agenouillant par groupes, ils répondent à Athanaël dont la voix se perd dans les solitudes du désert de la Thébaïde. )

Aphrodite’s amorous adventures. From the theatre comesthe sound of loud and enthusiastic cheers, veryfar away, though it is possible to discern that the crowd is shouting Thaïs’s name. The cheers grow louder and Thaïs’s dance bolder, until the vision suddenly vanishes and daylight breaks. It is dawn.)

ATHANAËL(who has been gradually awakening, now risesfull of terror and anger)Shame! Horror! Eternal darkness!Lord, help me!(He throws himself on the ground and remains prostrate.)Thou, who didst instil pity into our souls,merciful God, praise be to thee!I have understood the lesson of the darkness,I am up and away!(He stands up eagerly.)For I want to free this womanfrom the bonds of the flesh!I can see, in the heavens, the sorrowfulangels bending over her!Is she not the breath of thy mouth, O Lord?Ah, the guiltier she is, the more I should pity her!But I shall save her, Lord! ( Cette terrasse domine la ville et la mer ; elle est ombragée de grands arbres ; à droite, vaste tenture derrière laquelle se trouve la salle préparée pour le banquet. Lentement, Athanaël paraît et s’arrête aufond ; à sa vue, un serviteur se lève, sous leportique, et marche à sa rencontre. )

LE SERVITEUR9 Va, mendiant, chercher ailleurs ta vie !

Mon maître ne reçoit pas les chiens comme toi !

ATHANAËL ( doucement )Mon fils, fais, s’il te plaît, ce que je te commande.Je suis I’ami de ton maître, et je veuxlui parler à I’instant.

ATHANAËL’S VOICE (already far away)Spirit of light and grace,strengthen my heart for the fight.

Prelude

The terrace of Nicias’s house in Alexandria

(The terrace overlooks the town and the sea; it is shaded by huge trees; on the right hangs an enormous tapestry behind which is the hall ready for the evening banquet. Athanaël walks in slowly and stops at the back of the terrace; a servant, seated under the portico, sees him,rises and hurries to meet him.)

THE SERVANTGo, beggar, and seek your livelihood elsewhere!My master does not receive such curs as you!

ATHANAËL (gently)My son, please do as I bid you.I am your master’s friendand wish to speak with him at once.

THE SERVANTOut of here, beggar!(He raises his stick.)

ATHANAËL (firmly and calmly)Strike, if you wish, but let your master know. Go.(Impressed by Athanaël’s look and attitude, the servant steps back, bows and vanishes inside the house. Then as he, still seated, pursues his conversation with Nicias, they begin to pour perfumes over hishead and dress his hair and beard. Nicias observes them with a smile.)

( La lumière ne parvient dans cette retraite qu’à travers minces nappes d’eau qui I’adoucissent et I’irisent. Une figure de Vénus est au premier plan sur une stèle. Il y a devant la stèle, un brûle-parfums. Le sol est couvert de tapis de Byzance, d’oreillers brodés et de peaux de lions Iybiques. Grands vases d’onyx d’où s’élancent des perséas en fleurs. Thaïs paraît, accompagnée de quelques histrions et d’un petit groupe de comédiennes. Bientôt, elle les éloigne tous d’un geste.)

THAÏS ( seule, avec lassitude et amertume )18 Ah ! je suis seule, seule enfin !

Tous ces hommes ne sont qu’indifférence et que brutalité.Les femmes sont méchantes et les heures pesantes.J’ai I’âme vide. Où de trouver le repos?Et comment fixer le bonheur ?( Rêveuse, elle prend un miroir. )O mon miroir fidèle, rassure-moi.

To the front of the stage, a statue of Venus on a steIe, with an incenseburner in front of it. The ground is littered with rich Byzantine carpets, embroidered cushions and Libyan lion-skins. Luxuriant flowers tumble out of great onyx vases. Thaïs comes in with a few actors and actresses, but she soon motions them away.)

THAÏS (alone, weary and bitter)Ah! I am alone, alone at last.All these men are nought but indifference and brutality.The women are spiteful and the hours tedious.My soul is empty. Where shall I find rest?How shall I secure happiness?(She takes a mirror, dreamily.)O my faithful mirror, comfort me.Tell me that I am beautiful and that I shall

always be beautiful.That nothing will wither the rose of my lips,that nothing will tarnish the pure gold of my hair,Tell me! Après un instant, Thaïs et Athanaël paraissent, Thaïs, accablée de fatigue, se soutient à peine. )

Les Cénobites viennent de terminer leur repas du soir etregardent le ciel avec une vague terreur. Rafales lointaines du simoun. Cris de chacal et rugissement du lion dans les profondeurs du désert . )

LES CÉNOBITES17 Que le ciel est pesant ! quelle torpeur accable

les êtres et les choses !On entend au loin le cri du chacal !Le vent va déchaîner ses meutes rugissantesavec le tonnerre et I’éclair !

PALÉMON( aux Cénobites qui s’empressent au travailselon son indication )Rentrons dans nos cabaneset nos grains et nos fruits !Redoutons une nuit d’orage qui les disperserait !

UN CÉNOBITE ( en marchant )Athanaël !...qui I’a vu?...

PALÉMONDepuis vingt jours qu’il nous est revenu,mes frères, je crois bien qu’il n’a mangé ni bu !Le triomphe qu’il a remporté sur I’enfersemble I’avoir brisé de corps et d’âme !( Athanaël sort de sa cabane, les yeux fixes,I’air farouche, le corps comme brisé. )

Thaïs !( Il tombe comme écrasé de honte auxpieds de Palémon. )

PALÉMON ( doucement et simplement )Ne t’avais-je pas dit :« Ne nous mêlons jamais, mon fils, aux gensdu siècle, craignons les pièges de I’esprit ! »Ah! pourquoi nous as-tu quittés ! ...Que Dieu t’assiste! Adieu !( Athanaël se lève. Palémon I’embrasse et s’éloigne. Athanaël seul s’agenouille sur sa natte, étend les bras pour une muette et fervente oraison. Après quoi, iI s’allonge les mains jointes et s’endort. Après un temps, la forme de Thaïs apparaît, lumineuse, dans I’ombre. )

LES FILLES BLANCHESSeigneur, ayez pitié de moiselon votre mansuétude !( Athanaël, très pâle, très troublé, paraît à I’entrée du jardin. Ayant été aperçu par Albine, iI contient son émotion et s’arrête humblement. Albine est allée au-devant de lui avec respect. Les filles blanches forment un groupe qui tout d’abord cache àAthanaël la vue de Thaïs. )
