RYEDALE FESTIVAL 2013

INTRODUCTIONfrom the Artistic Director

Welcome to the Ryedale Festival. For two weeksevery July we welcome outstanding performersfrom all over the world, both established andemerging, to Ryedale, North Yorkshire - an arearich in history, architecture and natural beauty.Performances take place at Castle Howard,Hovingham Hall, Duncombe Park and Sledmere,as well as in Ampleforth Abbey, Helmsley ArtsCentre and the many beautiful country churchesof Ryedale.

The 100th anniversary of the birth of BenjaminBritten provides the starting point for a theme ofEnglish music running throughout the festival. Weopen with Britten’s great opera for the wholecommunity Noyes Fludde, performed by around150 local performers of all ages. It is heardalongside the world premiere of a new work inthe same tradition of mixed amateur andprofessional forces - a Ryedale Concerto inspiredby local landscapes by festival composer inresidence Cheryl Frances-Hoad (‘a remarkabletalent’, says The Times). This is the first in a seriesof festival concerts celebrating English musicfrom Purcell to the present day entitled BeforeBritten and after.

Also on the programme are two great works fromMozart's last year. An outstanding young cast willpresent a new production of The Magic Flute –his comic and profound final opera about thepursuit of love, wisdom and happiness. Later inthe festival, the massed Yorkshire voices of theRyedale Festival Chorus reunite with conductorSimon Wright to perform the Requiem Mozartcomposed as he was dying.

We welcome many exciting performers. Festival-goers who heard Andrej Bielow's performance ofTchaikovsky's Violin Concerto last year will bedelighted to see him return with his colleagues inthe Szymanowski Quartet as our festival artists inresidence. We also welcome internationallyacclaimed soloists such as Alison Balsom, StevenIsserlis, the Labèque sisters, Chi-chi Nwanoku andmany more. Orchestras and choirs include

Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of Opera North,European Union Chamber Orchestra, The EnglishConcert, The Choir of New College, Oxford andGenesis Sixteen.

Our popular series of Coffee Concerts is at theheart of the festival, many of them featuringsuperb young performers such as Laura van derHeijden, Mark Simpson, Richard Uttley, JamesTurnbull and Alexandra Silocea. Looking beyondclassical music, we welcome Claire Martin, JoeStilgoe and Patricia Routledge; other highlightsinclude talks, theatre, one of Yorkshire’s finestbrass bands and (back by popular demand!) theRyecrawl. This musical mystery tour is one ofseveral events unique to the festival – othersinclude the Triple Concert at Castle Howard andDouble Concert at Sledmere. We are delightedthat several concerts from this year’s festival willfor the first time be recorded for broadcast byBBC Radio 3.

Our thanks go to the many sponsors, supportersand volunteers whose generosity enables us topresent such a broad programme of events. Asever, there are many more highlights I couldmention but I leave you to explore the brochurefor yourself and look forward to meeting oldfriends and new in July for some inspiringsummer days of music-making and much more.

I look forward to seeing you there!

RYEDALE FESTIVAL OPERA

MOZART – THE MAGIC FLUTE (WITH PICNIC INTERVAL)

Director: Nina BrazierDesigner: Giulia Scrimieri

Is there any other work which manages tocombine the sublime and ridiculous in suchmarvellous music? Mozart’s opera captivatedaudiences at its first performance, just ten weeksbefore his death, at a rustic theatre on theoutskirts of Vienna. But perhaps even he couldnot have guessed that it would become one ofthe best-loved operas in history.

Tamino stumbles into the realm of the Queen ofthe Night where he is rescued from a giantserpent by three ladies. They show him a pictureof Pamina and he immediately falls in love. Alongwith his new acquaintance – the comical bird-catcher Papageno – and protected by his magicflute, he sets off on an adventure to rescue hisbeloved from the supposedly evil Sarastro. But allis not as it seems…

Join us to enjoy this unique masterpiece performedin a new translation by John Warrack by a cast ofoutstanding young singers.

‘Ryedale Festival Opera is an object lesson to ourlarge opera companies as to how much can beachieved from so little … on the proverbialshoestring budget, Ryedale Festival each yearoffers an operatic production of the highestquality’ – Yorkshire Post

‘I have this moment returned from the opera, which was as full as ever … but what always givesme the most pleasure is the silent approval! Youcan see how this opera is becoming more andmore esteemed’ – Mozart, in one of his last letters
