Presider We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made fl esh, Jesus your Son.

For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night he was handed over to suff ering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to

you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Th erefore, Father, according to his command,

All we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

Presider and we off er our sacrifi ce of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifi ce, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctifi ed by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the fi rstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. All Amen.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have participated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If you desire to know the love of God that overcomes indiff erence and despair, if you desire the recon-

ciliation that overcomes estrangement and alienation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. Th e bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the common cup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grape juice are served, grape juice is administered from the copper chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request in the East alcove.

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in a prayer

of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread and wine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your fi rst name and in a low voice briefl y state your prayer need. Th e prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a time for quiet prayer and meditation.

Sending Out of the DisciplesPrayer after CommunionPresider God of glory,All this table is a foretaste of the kingdom of your Son. May we be faithful to him in this life and rejoice with your servants St. Francis and St. Clare for ever; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DoxologyPresider Glory to God,All whose power, working in us, can do infi nitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art as a way to pro-mote dialogue around this timely topic.

Th e project included several youth engagement workshops. Over the summer, 40 youth from Christ Church Cathedral, the Urban Native Youth Asso-ciation, Ray-Cam Community Association, Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, and Roundhouse Community Centre worked with an artist to create art and discuss contemporary issues, such as reconcilia-tion, colonization, and Indigenous knowledge.

Th e project is now completed and Corey and Robi have transformed the mural with an image of a Raven and the word Haawa – which means Th ank you in the Haida language.

Th e Bill Reid Gallery thanks the sponsors, the BC Arts Council, Face the World Foundation, City of Vancou-ver, SFU, and the Christ Church Cathedral for their support and every person who took time out of their day to participate in the public conversation.

Currently, Corey is working as an artist in residence at the Bill Reid Gallery until October 2, 2016 to put the fi nishing touches on his new 9’ red cedar Bear Mother pole. He is assisted by Rick Adkins and Cap Burton.

Corey has carved many totem poles, including a 27’ yellow cedar pole for Scouts Canada, a 17’ story pole now at Queen Charlotte Lodge, and a 14’ mortuary-style memorial in the Namgis burial ground in Alert Bay. He has also carved a pole in New Zealand with Maori Master Carver Lionel Grant and Northwest Coast carvers Dempsey Bob, Joe David and Christian White. He assisted on the 2010 Olympic pole with Klatle Bhi.

Th e art will remain on the Georgia Street hoarding un-til Cathedral construction is complete this fall. Many thanks to the Bill Reid Gallery for transforming a blank wall into a creative, participatory mural.

21christ church cathedral

Fall is in the air and exciting things are happening in our Children, Youth, and Families Ministry here at Christ Church Cathedral! As we work towards meet-ing the spiritual needs of all of our young people, know that we appreciate any input and feedback that you might off er.

We are revamping the nursery and making it more child-and-youth-friendly and more Christian-centred. We would also like to rename this multi-use space. It will be home to our before- and after-Children’s-Church drop-in, our Toddler Church, and our youth groups. Let us know if you have a good name for it!

We are starting our youth programs in mid-October. Please let me know if you have any children who might be interested in joining or rejoining youth group here at the cathedral.

All parents are invited to register their children for Toddler Church, Children’s Church, and Youth Group. Please fi ll out forms available at the offi ce and in the nursery. Also, parents dropping off children ages two through four are being asked to sign them in and out of the nursery. In an emergency situation, this will help us ensure that all children in our care are safe. Th ank you for your understanding.

We will be conducting emergency fi re and earthquake drills in the coming weeks. Please take a few minutes to discuss with your children what might happen in case of an emergency while they are here at the Ca-thedral, and that the drills are simply an exercise of practice, so that they are not overwhelmed when we practise them. Th anks!

Matthew Senf and I will be starting Communion classes for youth in early November. Please plan on at-tending our October 9 meeting if you are interested in exploring this opportunity for your children this year.

22 Th e Feast of St. Francis and St. Clare | October 2, 2016

Notes from Th e Rev. Dr. Ellen Clark-KingOctober ,

Th is Sunday we are celebrating the feast days of St Francis and St Clare, the two saints of Assisi who em-braced a vocation of poverty in the 13th century. St Clare is known as the patron saint of television be-cause she saw visions at a distance! She could also be considered the patron saint of women in the Church who have seen their vocations denied because of their gender – her calling was to be a wandering friar like Francis himself but the conventions of the time meant that instead she had to live out her religious life within the confi nes of convent walls. Like many women over the centuries she made the best of her restricted role and became a wonderful leader to the women in her convent encouraging them to embrace their own path to God.

Francis, meanwhile, lived out his calling in the wider, wilder world and, as well as famously embracing ani-mals as within God’s care, also embraced a commit-ment to reconciliation.

One of my favourite Francis stories includes both these focuses. In the Italian village of Gubbio there was a wolf that was terrorizing the villagers – attacking livestock and then progressing to attacking the resi-dents themselves. Francis off ered to end the terror not by killing the wolf but by fi nding a diff erent way to supply its natural need for food. Having persuaded the wolf to agree to this bargain Francis then persuaded the villagers to forgive the wolf ’s past wrongs. So the villagers began to put out food for the wolf which, in turn, became gentle with them - and everyone lived happily ever after.

Now this is, of course, just a story but it says a lot about how Francis was trying to live out his identity as a follower of Christ. Where he saw situations of confl ict and wrong he worked to fi nd a way forward that was built on forgiveness and restored trust. He may not always have come to a point where ‘everyone lived happily ever after’ but working on reconciliation rather than revenge certainly made this outcome more of a possibility.

Not that it made the outcome easy. Working for rec-onciliation is a hard path, involving the acceptance of the wrongs we have done and the damage that we have caused to others – never a comfortable process! And we don’t usually have a convenient local saint to show us the way. Instead we have to step up ourselves, not waiting for a Francis to take matter into their own hands but doing our own work to heal a broken past in order to create a hopeful future.

We are continuing to do that work in a small way here at the cathedral by not losing our focus on the Truth and Reconciliation process. Chief Dr Robert Joseph, one of the founder and leaders of Reconciliation Can-ada, has been invited to speak with us on the Calls to Action that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued to the Canadian churches. Th is is happening here at CCC at 7pm on Wednesday 12 October.

Like St Francis we should continue to follow Christ on the path of reconciliation wherever we can and wher-ever it leads. And like St Clare we should push at the boundaries of what our society fi nds acceptable in or-der to follow the call of God within our heart.
