16TH CONGRESS OF THE UPDEAUPDEA, Union of Producers, Transporters and Distributors of Electrical Power in Africa, will hold its 16th Congress in Nairobi, Kenya on 24-26 June 2008.

UPDEA CONGRESS

The UPDEA congress has distinguished itself as a prime meeting place for all Africa power utilities. It has been held in various African cities over the last 38 years. The 16th UPDEA congress will take place in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, on 24 – 26 June, 2008. The theme of this year’s congress is Good governance of national power sectors as a key factor for realization of access to electricity for all the peoples of Africa.

About UPDEAUPDEA is a permanent member of the Executive Council of the AFREC (African Energy Commission) and a privileged partner of the NEPAD (new Partnership for Africa’s Development) and the African Union Commission. The association has 52 Active Member countries and 11 affiliate member firms from around the globe.

The 16th Congress topic is in line with the new vision of UPDEA – to be a primary catalyst in the realization of access to electricity for all the peoples of Africa.

PARTICIPANTS – WHO IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND

The congress will bring together 300 to 400 members of the UPDEA including CEOs and senior officials of Africa power utilities. It will provide an ideal forum for the exchange of experiences between Africa Power Utilities, Development Partners, specialized institutions involved in the Africa power sector and Africa governments.

Other participants will be Exhibitors from various manufacturers of power industry equipment and consulting firms who will be showcasing their products.

ABOUT KENYA

The Republic of Kenya sits on the Equator within East Africa and forms part of the East Africa Community with Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. English is the official language while Kiswahili is the national language.

Nairobi – the capital city – is considered the arrival point for many visitors from all over the world. Its Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is a recognized hub for many routes into and out of Africa.

The city is cosmopolitan and multicultural and boasts several attractions. It is the only city in the world with a wildlife park on its doorstep- the famous Nairobi National Park, and a golf club right in the heart of the city. Nairobi is home to several United Nations agencies and hosts the global headquarters of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).

Nairobi has a range of hotel accommodation – from premium to budget facilities – with the capacity to host thousands of visitors at any given time.

ClimateSituated at a high altitude, Nairobi has a very pleasant climate throughout the year. The months of June and July are mild to cool with chilly evenings. Cloudy drizzly days are common at this time of the year and temperatures average 24º celsius.

VENUE

The venue for the 16th UPDEA congress will be The Safari Park Hotel; a five star facility located fifteen minutes from the city centre. The hotel has a world class conference centre with twenty conference rooms, global connectivity, business support services and first class health and recreation facilities. It also has capacity for holding 50 exhibition booths.

The 16th edition of the UPDEA will bring together hundreds of professionals from the energy sector and related industries from all over Africa.

A limited number of exhibition booths and sponsorship opportunities are available for interested international and local partners in the industry. Space and opportunities will be allocated on first come basis.

CONFERENCE DETAILS

Date and Venue The Congress will be held on 24 – 26 June 2008 at The Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya

Opening Ceremony The opening ceremony will be held at 9.00am on Tuesday, 24 June, 2008.

Welcome Cocktail A welcome cocktail at The Safari Park Hotel will be offered to the Congress participants at the end of the first day of the congress on the evening of Tuesday, 24 June, 2008 at 6.00pm.

Social Events Exhibitors and Sponsors will be hosting various cocktails and dinners that will be open to all registered participants. The schedule will be communicated to participants.

Gala Dinner A Gala dinner will be held from 7.30pm on Thursday, 26 June, 2008.All congress participants will receive a dinner invitation card upon registration.

Closing CeremonyThis will take place on Thursday, 26 June, 2008 at 4.30pm.

Passport and VisaA valid passport and visa is necessary for entry to Kenya but participants from countries in the East Africa Community are exempt.Participants should apply for a short stay visa at the Kenyan Embassy or High Commission before departure.

Participants may also choose to apply for a visa at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi or at the country border points at a cost of US $ 100.

InsuranceCongress participants are adviced to contact their own insurance companies to cover all risks linked to their stay in Kenya. Neither the UPDEA nor the organizers will be responsible for injuries, loss of luggage and/or personal belongings, loss or damage of whatever nature incurred or caused by Congress participants or accompanying persons.

CANCELLATION POLICYIn the event a delegate cancels a booking before May 31, 2008, a refund of 50 percent of the amount already paid will be refunded. The cancellation notice must be in writing and be received by mail or fax on or before May 31, 2008. If a delegate cancels participation after May 31, 2008, the delegate will forfeit any payment already made.
