TISSUE ENGINEERING SOCIETY OF MALAYSIA (TESMA)
Date : 1st June 2010 Venue : Main Meeting Room, Level 4, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM Time : 11.30am
Attendees Please refer to Appendix I 1.0 INTRODUCTION
The meeting commenced at 11.30am and was chaired by the President of TESMA Prof. Fauziah Othman. Meeting minutes of the 5th AGM and notification of the 6th AGM had been sent to members two weeks earlier via email. Additional copies of the meeting agenda, previous AGM minutes, year 2008 activities and financial reports were provided during the meeting. The chairperson congratulated the organizing committee for TESMA Seminar Series June 2010 in conjunction with TESMA 6th AGM for high number of turn-ups. 50 people from various organizations have participated in the seminar, which ended just before the 6th AGM started. 2.0 CONFIRMATION OF THE 5TH AGM MINUTES
The minutes of the previous meeting held on 17th June 2009 was passed by Dr. Rajesh Ramasamy and seconded by Dr. Sharmili Vidyadaran
3.0 UPDATES, ACHIEVEMENT REPORT AND REVIEW OF PAST ACTIVITIES
Dr Angela Ng Min Hwei, the Honorary Deputy Secretary elaborated in length the activities of TESMA held in 2009. The Honorary Secretary, Dr. Norshariza Nordin, was on medical leave and therefore the report was presented by the Honorary Deputy Secretary. Refer to 2009-10 activity report. (Appendix II)
4.0 FINANCIAL REPORT 4.1 Dr Syahrilnizam Abdullah, the Honorary Treasurer, presented the
financial report for the period of accounts from 1 January 2009 – 31 December 2009 and 1 January 2010 – 31 May 2010. Refer to TESMA Financial Report. (Appendix III)
4.2 Prof. Fauziah congratulated Dr. Syahril for a wonderful job in managing
the account, and also to TESMA for its financial stability even though the society is still at its infancy stage.
4.3 The committee decided to promote membership drive as to get members
to pay their fees as well as more life membership, and also to attract more people to join the society.
5.0 RESOLUTIONS/MOTIONS
5.1 Change of the name of society Members have agreed to change the society‟s name to “Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine Society of Malaysia” with acronym TESMA to be maintained

TESMA activities from June 2009 – May 2010
1. TESMA short seminar series June 2009
Date: 17TH June 2009, TIME: 9.00-12.30 pm Theme: From Fundamentals to Clinical Venue: Main Meeting Room, Level 4, Faculty of Medicine & Health
Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) The seminar, which was co-organized by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM, was opened to members, non-members as well as private companies. 54 people from various organizations, including UPM, UKM, IMU, PPUKM, Malaysia Nuclear Agency, CryoCord Sdn. Bhd., and Intran Technologies, have participated in the seminar, which ended just before the 5th AGM started. The seminar commenced with the registration of participants at around 8.15 am while breakfast was served. The session started with greetings from the chairperson, Dr. Sharmili Vidyadaran, followed by introduction of the first speaker, Pn. Rusnah Mustaffa, a scientist from Division of Industrial Technology, Malaysia Nuclear Agency. Her topic was on the Biomaterial for Tissue Engineering Applications. The second speaker was Prof. Dr. Hesham A. El Enshasy, a lecturer in the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). His topic was on the cGMP for Cell Culture and Tissue Engineering Facility. The last speaker was MR. Toshiyuki Akamine, a scientist from Autostrade Co. Ltd. Japan. His talk was on the Generation of Biochip via Tissue Engineering Technology. All speakers were given a token of appreciation for their well-done job. The seminar ended around 12.30 pm where everybody was then invited for lunch. Participants enjoyed the seminar, and took the gathering as the opportunity for networking. Recruitment of new TESMA members as well as membership renewals were also took place.
2. Tesma short seminar series November 2009
Date: 23rd November 2009, Time: 8.30 – 12.00 pm Theme: Stem Cell Research: Covering the Basics Venue: Main Meeting Room, Level 4, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences,
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) The seminar was co-organized by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM, and was opened to members, non-members as well as private companies. 81 people from various organizations, including UPM, UKM, IMU, PPUKM,

Monash University, Malaysia Nuclear Agency, CryoCord Sdn. Bhd., Frost & Sullivan, Stem Life, and Intran Technologies, have participated in the seminar. Breakfast and lunch were kindly sponsored by Stem Medics Sdn. Bhd. The seminar started with the welcoming address by the President of TESMA, Prof. Fauziah Othman, followed by the organizing chairperson, Dr. Sharmili Vidyadaran. The first speaker, Prof. Eric Stanbridge (University of California University of Medicine), was introduced by the session chairman, Dr Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam (UPM). Prof. Stanbrige talk was on “Breast Cancer Stem Cells”. The second speaker, Dr Norshariza Nordin (UPM), was introduced by Dr. Syahrilnizam Abdullah (UPM) who talked on “Wnt Signalling during Neural Differentiation of Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells: Generation of more Neurons in vitro”. Dr. Maha Abdullah (UPM) introduced the last speaker, Dr Rajesh Ramasamy (UPM), who talked on “Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Transplantation Setting”. All speakers were given a token of appreciation for their well-done job. The seminar ended around 12.45 pm where everybody was then invited for lunch.
3. Tesma short seminar series March 2010 Date: 24 Mar 2010 Time: 9.00am-1.00pm Venue: Dewan Kuliah 1, Ground Floor, Academic Block, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre The seminar was co-organized by the UKM Medical Centre and was opened to members and non-members without any charges. Dr Belinda Murphy, a TESMA committee member brought in 60 undergraduates from UM which made up more than 60% of the attendees. Dr Belinda was generous enough to subsidize refreshments (RM2.50 each) for all her students. The attendance breakdown was as follows:
There were four speakers, namely,
1) Dr Ying Yang from Keele University,UK - „Monitoring cellular activity of
tissue engineering constructs via nondestructive modalities‟.
2) Dr Shiplu Roy Chowdhury from UKM Tissue Engineering Centre –
„Culture process design to expand human skeletal myoblasts for clinical
applications‟

The speakers‟ travelling and expenses was self-funded. A token of appreciation
(4G pendrive) and a certificate was given to each speaker and the organizing
committee members.

Feedback from the attendees were encouraging. Many find the meeting useful and up to their expectation.
4. Berita TESMA/Newsletter
No new issues had been produced since 2009. There is a reactivation to the editorial board.
5. Website
We have engaged Bethzoe Consultancy to revamp the TESMA website in beginning of 2010. The service package was as follow:
Option A: The basic website (inclusive of conference page) with a members'
section which allows for members to update their information and change password and username. There will also be a specialist information search engine (for members only). Meaning we can search among our members by specialization, name, location etc. Cost: RM 3000.

Below are the new categories for the TESMA website:
1. Home, 2. Committee Members, 3. Membership, 4. Activities, 5. News / articles / recent developments, 6. Affliate research labs, 7. Forum, 8. Downloads 9. Journal links A new feature will be created for the benefit of TESMA members only ; a searchable members‟ database including: 1. Name, 2. Employer, 3. Department, 4. Research interest, 5. Keywords, 6. Published articles Designing works are in progress meanwhile updated news on TESMA activities have been uploaded and the MTERMS 2010 website was created where registration and submission of abstract can be done online.
6. Membership update
New members were recruited during the 5th AGM; 2 life members, 5 professional members, 6 student members and 2 student member renewals.
7. Financial update
TESMA since 2009 has not been engaged in any income-generating activities. Outreach activities for the members & public were generally free-of charge. No new members nor subscription renewal was received since June 2009.
