This important milestone of our 60th year gives us a chance to celebrate our founding, reflect on our success, rev- el in the sense of community we've all built over six decades. We invite all who have been a part of the Orient community to join us during this academic year to acknowledge our legacy. Join us as we celebrate the success of the young people who we have pre- pared for the world of their time. Orient Islamic School first opened its doors in January 1959. Over the years, facilities have been built and developed, impactful pro- grammes have grown and changed and stellar learners have at- tended our school. An education framed in the Orient Islamic Schools tradition educates the entire learner. It provides a frame- work which fosters the integration of the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth of each learner. This calling has been embraced by the many people who branch out of our school's family tree - Board members, staff, learners, alumni, par- ents, grandparents and friends. Like you, they are all part of the Orient Schools tradition. Orient Islamic Schools 60th Anniversary is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the hard work and achievements of teachers, staff, learners and alumni over these past 60 years. All events taking place this year at the school will form part of the 60 th year celebrations. We have already had our 60 th Anniversary Primary School fun day and other school activi- ties to commemorate the 60 th Year. Other activities planned are the Ladies Day Out, Family Sports Day, our Annual Fun Walk and a Gala Dinner. A 60 th Anniversary brochure is also being published to highlight the achievements and development of the school. As a former learner of Orient Islamic School, you belonged to our school community and you left your impression on our school whilst you were here. Now that you have moved on, we would love to hear from you and are eager to hear about what you have been up to wherever you are in the world. By keeping in touch with OIS, former learners can reconnect and maintain links with their peers, receive news of the school and our upcoming events, and also hear about our development initiatives which will benefit future generations of learners. It is fascinating to discover the career pathways Alumnae have chosen and their significant achievements to date. We look forward to keeping in contact with you, sharing your news, and welcoming you back to OIS in the near future for our reunions and events. Message from the Primary School Principal ’s Desk In the name of Allah, the Most Kind, the Most Merciful Dear Parents/Guardians Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatulahi wabarakatu We feel a sense of great sadness as the blessed month of Ramadaan departed, its beautiful days and its fragrant nights… May the departure of Ramadaan find us as better individuals than we were at its commencement and make dua that Allah (SWT) accepts all our efforts. Ameen As I reflect on our first half of the school year I can’t help marveling at the obvious delight emanating from the faces of the children I see every day. The atmosphere of joyful learning has become wide-spread and contagious. I see it in the young 4 and 5 year olds who have started this year in awe of their beautiful environment where the possibilities to learn seem endless. Their contentment is also expressed with the warm greetings I receive from those young children every day as I visit the class-rooms. A love of learning is sustained through the Primary School also. We always note how much has happened. This term has been no exception, our staff have worked tirelessly often going above and beyond expectations and it remains a privilege to work amongst such a talented and dedicated staff. So many wonderful events have taken place, as you will know if you follow us on Facebook, In-stagram and our newsletters. Orient Islamic School celebrates 60 Years of academic excellence. The school opened its doors in Jan-uary 1959. We acknowledge with thanks the efforts of all those who have served this school. We have them to thank for developing the facilities that we have today. The building, the grounds and facilities, however, are mere mortar, bricks and sand. The lifeline of our school is our community. The children, the teachers, the administrative staff, the grounds staff, the Governing Body, the Parent Teachers As-sociation, the Mothers’ Committee, the parents and our friends are the elements that have made our school successful. We must continue to build for the children of today so that their children will hap-pily celebrate the anniversaries to come. Looking ahead to next term there is also much to be excited about, celebratory events to commemo-rate our diamond Year but for now it is time to enjoy the winter holidays… Have a wonderful school holiday. Wasalaam

PRE-SCHOOL For young children, every experience or encounter presents a learning opportunity. They learn from everything they see, do, hear, feel, smell, and taste; everyone they interact (talk, play, laugh) with; and everywhere they go. We encourage and develop language skill and ability to acquire vocabulary. Throughout the play and education, children learn social skills along with how to deal with others and develop their own values.

LETTERLAND MARKET DAY Alhamdulillah, we were blessed with beautiful weather and our letterland Market day, which was held on the 17th of April 2019, was a tremendous success. A heartfelt Shukran goes out to our mums and guardians for bringing delicious treats, stationery, accessories, toys etc... and for interacting with us. Your sponsorship and support was most appreciat-ed. Besides it being a fun way to learn the letters of the alphabet, our learners had fun shopping and selling, and they learnt money management and entrepreneurial skills as well. We thank you for your monetary contributions, a portion of our sales will be given in charity and a portion will be used to enhance our classroom learning.

GRADE R ELECTION DAY Together with the rest of the country, the grade R’s of Orient Islamic School jumped on to the voting bandwagon. There is no better way to explain to Preschoolers about a topic than to act it out. On Wednesday 15

th May 2019 our Grade Rs voted for the next ‘President of Letterland’.

We started our day by creating our very own Orient ID documents. We then, in true voting style, waited patiently to fill in our ballot forms by marking it with an ‘x’ next to our favourite Letterland character. We then dropped them of into a ballot box. Votes were cast in private and learners could vote for a very Naughty, Noisy Nick, Quarrelsome Queen, Fire Fighter Fred, Kick-ing King or Harry Hat man. Our learners ended the voting session by getting their thumbs marked with a marker. That’s not all, we introduced Data Handling and tallied up the votes. Our hero, The Fearless Firefighter Fred has been elected as the new president of Letterland. It was an amazing day full of learning and laughter.

FOUNDATION PHASE

Foundation Phase : We play, we do, we think, we learn and we love it! To move ahead, it is sometimes necessary to take a step back, reflect and introspect. We have done just that here in the Foundation Phase and we have made bold decisions for the children under our care…our leaders and entrepreneurs, our future. So our journey begins in the play-ground with our 4 – 6 year olds, It’s no longer simply a time-out session or an opportunity to let out steam. Instead it is another learning environment. Play, after all, builds self-worth. It en-ables children to concentrate and focus as they are absorbed in what they are doing. They learn the basics of conflict resolution and team work as they navigate the jungle gym and ne-gotiate the use of Fantasy Play props. They form alliances, they dispute, they win and they lose. They develop skills essential to their growth by playing – which is then transferred to the class-room with fun learning activities. Our learners learn through play and love it.

The Annual Book Fair once again proved to be a phenomenal success with both parents and learners showing great inter-est in the selection and purchasing of books for their home libraries. The wide variety of books ensured that there was a book to match the interest of learners from grade R up to grade 9. We are very privileged to have hosted authors Shafinaaz Hassim and Fadila Moolla who signed off their respective books. Fadila Moolla's first book," Take Control" was well received by those who visited the fair. We thank all parents and learners for their support.

READING CHALLENGE The Reading Challenge was launched during the month of April targeting the Primary School learners. Once again, the aim of the challenge was to ensure that every learner borrowed a book from the library. It was both a class and individual challenge. Every Friday, for the month of April, the Reading Challenge posters outside the classrooms were updated with the latest stats from that week. It was really inspiring to see learners comparing their results with their neighbouring classes and then urging their fellow classmates to borrow books. Upon returning their books to the library, learners were briefly questioned on it by library personnel. This was to ensure that books were REALLY read and not just borrowed to improve the reading figures. Winners were announced at special assemblies held for the Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase respec-tively. The winning class of the 2019 Reading Challenge (FP) was GRADE 2.3 and the Top Reader was SALMA MAHOMEDY (gr. 2.1). The winning class for the Intermediate Phase was GRADE 5.2 and the Top Reader was HUMAIRAH VARIAWA (gr. 6.1). A certificate was awarded to the winning class and each learner was treated to a bookmark and a packet of chips. The top readers were each given a novel and a certificate as well. The Ramadaan Challenge followed the Reading Challenge. In this challenge learners were told stories and then questioned on the moral lessons learned from them. Learners were rewarded with stars on their class charts for their responses to the questions asked. Learners were encouraged to display excellent akhlaaq.

MESSAGE FROM THE LIBRARIAN

WRITING WORKSHOP A writing workshop conducted by authoress Shafinaaz Hassim was held for the grade 6 learners. It was a highly

interactive and engaging session and it was indeed amazing to see their thought processes and creativity un-

fold as they shared their ideas and stories with their peers. We also take this opportunity of wishing Shafinaaz

everything of the best as she was selected as one of the 2019 Finalists in the Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature

for her yet to be released book, Nisaa Qamar and the Legend of Qawthar.

VISIT TO THE CITY HALL LIBRARY The grade 4 learners went on a tour of the City Library and the Natural Science Museum. Learners were ex-

posed to the process of borrowing books from a public library. Membership forms were given to those learn-

ers keen on becoming members of the Municipal library.
