Curriculum Update – Toddler 1 Program Jennifer E & Myndi
Spring arrived and our Toddlers enjoyed the freedom to explore the
playground without snow and big snowsuits getting in the way.
Our Toddlers have discovered how to make sand castles and the joy of
smashing them with their hands. We noticed many bugs flying around in the air
and crawling on the ground. Many of our Toddlers pointed them out, calling
them by their name (dragonflies, butterflies, ants, flies) and/or picking them up and carrying
them around.
We had Painted Lady Butterfly kits in our room! The children were
able to watch and discover how a butterfly comes from a caterpillar,
cocoons, and comes out as a beautiful butterfly. We released our
butterflies and watched them fly away. Some even stopped and stood
on our fingers/hands before saying goodbye.
We have been enjoying many buggy rides around the neighbourhood. During our rides we saw
deer, birds, airplanes, vehicles, the leaves starting to bloom on the trees and many new and
exciting changes happening during the season change.
We are all looking forward to a fun summer with many planned activities and all of the new
experiences for our little Toddlers to discover.

The Sun finally arrived and we were are able to enjoy our outside time. The children and Teachers have
enjoyed the warm weather immensely. We had a couple of water days and we all enjoyed playing in the
water, having so much fun.
With all the rain and humidity lately the mosquitos have been out in full force. Parents, if
you wish to use a bug repellant for your child, you are welcome to bring some in. We will
apply the product before we go outside. Please remember to label the product with your
child’s name and speak with one of the Teachers as there is a consent form to be signed
before we can apply the bug repellant.
In the near future we will go for a buggy ride to Hammonds Nursery to buy some plants
and dirt for our garden. These little people enjoy the “dirt” and have enjoyed making
“mud” to play in; this is going to be a fun, messy summer!

Many interests and activities in May and June included planting, bugs and tadpoles. The
children planted sunflowers for Mother’s Day gifts and were very proud to give them to their
Mom’s. We walked to Hammond’s Greenhouse to see all the flowers, plants and picked out some
to bring back to the Day Care. We planted flowers, Kohlrabi, a pumpkin and tomatoes in the
garden and planters. We also planted seeds including tomatoes, dill, sunflowers and scarlet
runner beans. The children are excited to water the garden and planters each day.
Our Painted Lady (caterpillar) Butterflies arrived on May 11th. The children were very interested in
observing how they formed cocoons, were attached to the “bug” cage and then we patiently waited for
them to turn into butterflies which happened on May 25th! We said goodbye and released our
Butterflies on May 30th and since then we have had many requests to read “The Hungry Caterpillar”
book.
The children have been looking for bugs outside. They have found inch worms, army
worms, daddy long leg spiders, earth worms, and dragonflies. There has also been
great interest in Frogs! We have been hearing them nearby and our friend Ayla
brought frog eggs in for us to observe. Three of them turned into tadpoles and we
have been feeding them, changing their water and anxiously waiting to watch them
turn into frogs. So far we have learned it takes a long time to turn from an egg to a
frog.
Our friends Bennett and Brinley brought in bird nests for us to see and they were very proud to show
everyone. We talked about what the bird nests were made of; there was grass, mud, and string all woven
into a nest. We all discussed what kind of bird nests they were and we decided they were from Robins.
Getting ready for Father’s Day we painted rocks and made cards for our Dad’s. The children proudly
presented them to thieir Dad’s for Father’s Day. Charlotte shared a video of a baby deer which spent
part of a day her back yard. That was fun to watch! The children and staff are looking forward to a
busy, warm summer with water play, mud play, sand play and many more new discoveries.
