JESUS: THE FAITHFULSERVANT

This week we will consider Christs perect

response to Gods Word through His death and

resurrection. Jesus Christ obeyed the Fathers

word and submitted to His will, even though it

brought great sufering and shame. But in Christs

willing submission, He secured our purication rom sin

and was thus exalted to the right hand o the Father. What

this means or us is that we no longer have to try and pullourselves up to God. Our eforts dont earn more or less

o Gods love. Because o Christ, the aithul servant, we

become something we could never achieve ourselves,

children o God. This should result in an increasing love and

afection or Christ. His aithulness leads to our worship.

READY YOUR HEART

Mark 14:32-36 Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told Hisdisciples, Sit here while I pray. He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began

to be deeply distressed and horried. Then He said to them, My soul is swallowed up in

sorrowto the point o death. Remain here and stay awake. Then He went a little arther,

ell to the ground, and began to pray that i it were possible, the hour might pass rom

Him. And He said, Abba, Father! All things are possible or You. Take this cup away rom

Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.

NOBODY VOLUNTEERS FOR SUFFERING We do not like hurt or pain very much

Typically most o us avoid pain at all cost Generally, the only suerings that most o usendure are the suerings thrust upon us, usually leaving us without an option to ace

them You may have been orced to ace hurt or pain unwillingly because o a divorce,breakup, death in the amily, a riend letting you down, or countless other ways, butvolunteering or suering? Most never have or will But praise be to God, Jesus did

Jesus Christ, our Savior, willingly suered or us He willingly endured the sueringo the cross, knowing the physical pain that would accompany it and knowing the

separation and wrath coming rom his Father in heaven I anyone has ever beenundeserving o suering, it was the Lord Jesus Yet he suered voluntarily With his death

looming over Him in the Garden o Gethsemane, He prayed or the Father to remove thecup o suering i possible But ultimately, His desire was or his Fathers will to be done,

even i it meant His own suering His suering brought us lie and redeemed us Jesuslaid down his lie to the Fathers will

I we belong to Christ, we too should willingly lay down our lives to Gods will, eveni suering ollows Jesus warns that suering will come to those who belong to Him(Matt 10:22) Knowing this, we should still willingly submit our will to God Christ has

shown us the way

VOLUNTEER WORK

PAUSE AND REFLECT When you think about sufering and your lie, what

comes to mind? Why was it important that Jesus endure sufering on

our behal? Jesus warns that sufering will come to those who

belong to Him. What might that mean or your lie?

READY YOUR HEART

Phil. 2: 5-11 Make your own attitude that o Christ Jesus, who, existing in the ormo God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used or His own

advantage. Instead He emptied Himsel by assuming the orm o a slave, taking on the

likeness o men. And when He had come as a man in His external orm, He humbled

Himsel by becoming obedient to the point o deatheven to death on a cross. For this

reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, so

that at the name o Jesus every knee should bowo those who are in heaven and on

earth and under the earth and every tongue should coness that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory o God the Father.

HAVE YOU EVER experienced public shame? There are all sorts o ways it can happen

It can happen accidentally through some circumstance like slipping and alling in themiddle o the hallway between classes, or dropping an easy fy ball in a baseball gameIt can also happen intentionally, as someone uses shame to embarrass and hurt you

Teachers may do this by making you stand up in class because you got caught talking asthey were teaching A coach may make you drop and do push-ups in ront o the team

because you messed up the play Public shame can be a orm o punishmentPublic shame is one the ways the Romans o Jesus day would punish people The

use o crucixion was simultaneously a orm o physical punishment and shame It

brought shame on the person in multiple ways: they were naked and they were put onpublic display With Jesus, they not only did this, but they brutally beat him, mocked

him by placing a crown o thorns around his head, and placing a sign above him that

read King o the Jews Jesus Christ our Lord became obedient to the point o death,even death on a cross He humbled himsel by taking on fesh, marching to the cross,despising its shame

Why did Jesus embrace this shame? To accomplish the Fathers grand design insalvation Through his willingness to suer pain and public humiliation, he became thepropitiation (wrath-diverting sacrice) or our sins He did the work o redemption or

us that we could never do or ourselves In this way, he submitted to the Fathers will,embracing the humiliation and shame

PAUSE AND REFLECT What public shame have you endured beore? How does

it make you eel to look back on it? How is shame related to sufering? Why would God

allow Jesus to be exposed to both?

Heb. 1:1-4 Long ago God spoke to the athers by the prophets at diferent times and indiferent ways. 2 In these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed

Him heir o all things and made the universe through Him. 3 The Son is the radiance o

Gods glory and the exact expression o His nature, sustaining all things by His powerul

word. Ater making purication or sins, He sat down at the right hand o the Majesty

on high. 4 So He became higher in rank than the angels, just as the name He inherited is

superior to theirs.

THE BEST MOVIES IN THE WORLD, I THINK, are the ones that end with the hero making

some great sacrice to save the lives o many people In making the sacrice, thepeople are saved and the individual is exalted as the great hero I watched the movie

Armageddon (1998) as a teenager The story depicted a veteran astronaut and his teamwho are going to save the planet by diverting an oncoming asteroid rom hitting EarthThis astronaut, Harry, is put in position where either he or his daughters love interest,

AJ, are going to have to stay behind and die to successully accomplish the mission AJappears to be the one tasked to do it, but at the last moment, Harry steps in, pushes AJ

aside, and takes his place Harry destroys the asteroid and loses his lie, but saves theplanet and the man his daughter loves The movie ends with Harrys uneral where he is

honored and recognized as the great heroWe love movies like this Why is it that we love these types o stories and movies?

Because deep down inside o us we know that we are in need o a rescue and weknow the one who does it is worthy o all praise The story o the gospel is one in which

Jesus Christ willingly submitted his own lie, in order to save a people or himsel Jesuswillingly took our place, by taking on fesh and dying on the cross On the third day herose rom the grave, conquering Satan, sin, and death In doing so, He is exalted He is

the hero He is worthy o worship, praise, and adoration He is given the name that isabove every name Ater making purication or our sins, he was seated at the right

hand o his Father Jesus is the great hero

WORTHY

PAUSE AND REFLECT What movie can you think o that involves a hero

sacricing himsel to take someones place? What traits are common among those heroes? Does it change your view o the gospel to think

o yoursel as someone needing rescue, and Christas the hero?

When Christ submittedto the Fathers will...Jesus Christ obeyed the Fathers word and submittedto His will, even though it brought great sueringand shame. But in Christs willing submission,

Jesus knew that there was no way toulll the Fathers Word other thanto submit to the Fathers will. Godcould only take this cup away romHis people by pouring it out on Hisrighteous Servant.

Think about the heroes o many Americanmovies and television shows. Many times,the heroes are those who rebel againstauthority in pursuit o a greater good.How do these stories aect our view oauthority? What does submission to Godlook like in the context o our relationships(spouse, authority fgure, employer, etc.)?

It CausedGreat Shame.Jesus did not empty Himsel o deity; He took

on a lowly status and position as He took onhumanity.

How does having the attitude o Christ

(Phil. 2:5) lead to imitating Christ (vv.3-4)? Why is it important that we groundour eorts to imitate Christ in the mindor attitude o Christ?

Are you willing to sacrifce personalcomort in order that others might hear oChrist? Are you willing to ace humiliationor shame as you ollow Christ?

ConclusionBy submitting to the Fathers will, Jesus revealed theFathers heart o love or His allen creation. Though we arthe rebels in Gods story, God has spoken to us o His love,mercy, and grace in Jesus death.

It Led to His Exaltation.Jesus willing submission to a harsh and shamedeath on a cross began His kingly procession toHis throne.

ENCORE

1. IT BROUGHT GREAT SUFFERING (MARK 14:32-36).

Jesus knew that obeying the Father would bring great sufering. Tats why He became so deeplydistressed and horried that He told His disciples that He was lled with sorrowto the pointo death. Jesus agony was rooted in the knowledge that the time had almost arrived to ulll the

purposeo His death. Jesus did not come in the esh merely to die; He came to die on behal osinners.

Te Bible teaches that those who continue in rebellion to Gods Word and reuse to submit toGods will are storing up wrath or themselves. One way the Bible describes the outpouring o Gods

wrath is with the imagery o a cup lled with wine. Te wine represents Gods wrath/anger (Jer.

25:15-17,28; 49:12). On the day o judgment, God will pour out the cup lled with the wine o Hiswrath, and He will make rebellious sinners drink every last drop until they become drunk with Hiswrath (Ps. 75:8; Ezek. 23:32-34).

At the cross (the hourthat Jesus spoke o), God the Father poured out the ull cup o Hiswrath on His own Son as a judgment against sin. Since Jesus took on our sin, He was orsaken andabandoned (Mark 15:34). Anticipating this judgment, Jesus asked His Father, the only One withthe authority to remove Him rom both this hourand this cup, i there was any possible way that Hecould alter His will so that His Word could be ullled through some other means.

In the end, however, unlike Adam, Jesus submitted to the Fathers will with an emphatic Notwhat I will, but what You will. Jesus knew that there was no way to ulll the Fathers Word other

than to submit to the Fathers will. God could only take this cup away rom His people by pouring itout on His righteous Servant (Isa. 51:17,21-22). Jesus received the wounds we deserved, and by aithwe receive orgiveness (53:1-12).

2. IT BROUGHT GREAT SHAME (PHIL. 2:5-11).

Jesus had all the privileges that came with being God. Yet in submitting to the Fathers will, He setthose privileges aside in order to become human or our salvation. Jesus did not empty Himsel odeity; He took on a lowly status and position as He took on humanity. Jesus had to step out o theglories o heaven, become a servant, and take on esh. According to the Fathers plan o redemption,

Jesus had to become like us in order to rescue us.

Te Gospel accounts reveal that Jesus is therighteous Prince sent bytherighteous King to rescuea rebellious people held captive by the Evil One. In Philippians 2:5-8, the apostle Paul reminds usthat Jesus submitted to the Fathers will in humbling Himsel in order to rescue us, even thoughit brought Him great shame. Tankully our story does not end with Christs shameul death, orhumiliation leads to exaltation.

God, the righteous King, raised Jesus rom the dead, deeating the evil prince, conquering death,and nulliying the ear o death. In act, because o Jesus obedient humiliation, the Father exaltedHim to the place o ultimate authority. Jesus was crowned Lord and King over all, and the entire

universe will bow down to Him and coness His lordship. He who humbled Himsel as a servantbecame the exalted One through His perect response to Gods Word.

3. IT LED TO HIS EXALTATION (HEB. 1:1-4).

Te story o God, therighteous King, and His Son, Jesus, is the truestory o exaltation throughhumiliation. All other stories all short. Tey pale in comparison to the story o Jesus.

In order that the world would know Him in all His glory, God has spoken His story to His peoplethroughout history. In the Old estament era, God spoke through diferent persons in various,ragmentary waysre, smoke, direct word, prophecy, dreams, visions, angels, etc. (Heb. 1:1).

In these last days indicates that by His coming, Jesus ushered in the new era o ulllment thatthe Old estament pointed to. In this new era, God has nally and uniquely spoken to us in JesusChrist, who, as the radiance o Gods glory, is the very presence o God. o know Jesus is to knowGod; to see Jesus is to see God.

CONCLUSION

Asking what Jesus has done moves us to ask, Why? Why did Jesus humble Himself, becoming obedient,even unto a harsh and shameful death?By submitting to the Fathers will, Jesus revealed the Fathersheart o love or His allen creation. Tough we are the rebels in Gods story, God has spoken to uso His love, mercy, and grace in Jesus death. o be sure, God has also spoken to us about His justiceand righteousness in Jesus death as well.

When we realize that God has spoken to us in Jesus Christ, the natural question is What will beour response?Te appropriate response, o course, is repentance (turning away rom our rebellionand our desire to be our own kings) and aith (turning to Christ, bowing down and acknowledgingHim as our King). Te good news is that those who trust in Christ are exalted with Christ.

However, those who reject Christs rule will receive the ull cup o Gods wrath (Col. 3:5-7). So then,the question every person must grapple with is not What would Jesus do?but rather What will youdo with Jesus?
